Hops news USA, WA: Washington hops bringing flavor to booming craft beer industry
Whether your brew of choice is Budweiser or Bale Breaker, there are few places on Earth where you can sip a cold pint knowing the flavors came from a farm just down the road, The Spokesman reported on June 10.

That’s a point of pride for nearly everyone connected to the Yakima Valley’s hops industry, from farmers to regulars at Yakima Sports Center – a downtown bar with a selection of two dozen craft beer taps.

Hops farmers are still farmers, and face the same challenges as other growers: labor shortages, rising costs, a particularly pesky mite, high barriers to entry that keep new players from entering the market.

But the rise of craft beer has propelled the industry, and Yakima along with it, to greater recognition around the world. Washington hop acreage has grown 42 percent over the past five years, with 38,438 acres harvested in 2017, according to Hop Growers of America.

That increase has paralleled an explosion in the craft beer industry and the dominance of India pale ales, the style best known for showcasing hop flavors.

It’s a Northwest, and especially a Washington crop: The Evergreen State made up 74 percent of U.S. hop production in 2017. Add Oregon and Idaho, ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, AB: Alberta's craft beer subsidy plan tanked by trade panel
It’s closing time for Alberta’s homegrown subsidy designed to help its beer brewers, CityNews Toronto reported on June 11.

Finance Minister Joe Ceci says the province is changing the program after an appeal panel ruled it contravenes the Agreement on Internal Trade.

Ceci says that doesn’t mean the government will stop supporting Alberta’s brewers, who he said face stiff protectionist measures when they try to expand into other provinces.

“We will run a program that continues to have the backs of Alberta brewers,” Ceci said on June 11 while touring an Edmonton craft brewery.

An appeal panel under the Agreement on Internal Trade upheld an earlier decision that provincial grants to assist Alberta craft brewers are unfair and violate interprovincial free trade rules.

“By tying the grant explicitly to certain levels of production and sales of beer produced in Alberta, the (grant) program encourages the production and sale of Alberta beer and provides a competitive advantage … over beer produced in other provinces,” wrote the appeal panel.

Ceci suggested the province may go on the legal offensive.

“We will also look at the restrictive policies in place in other provinces.”

He said Alberta brewers face lengthy and costly applications, restrictions on shelf space outside Alberta and other barriers ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: The Mitten Brewing Company opens third location in Michigan
The Mitten Brewing Company has brought its signature craft beer and pizza to a third Michigan town: Saugatuck, Brewbound.com reported on June 8.

The brewery’s new location at 329 Water Street opened on Friday, June 8. It’s located across the street from The Mermaid Bar and Grill, Coppercraft Distillery, Ridge Cider and just a few doors down from Coral Gables.

The small building is a pre-Civil War home that had been converted to a commercial space.

“We seem to have an affinity for choosing old buildings at the Mitten,” said The Mitten Brewing Co-Owner Chris Andrus. The Mitten’s original location is in an historic Grand Rapids firehouse.

Like The Mitten’s original location, the new space required some rebuilding—much of which Andrus and Co-Owner Max Trierweiler did themselves.

The new space seats 80 patrons: 36 indoors and 44 outside on the covered patio and in the lawn on picnic tables Andrus and Trierweiler built.

Andrus and Trierweiler built the new bar from 1840s-era lumber—from back when Saugatuck was a lumber town and port. The wood was a gift from Saugatuck Brewing Company Founder and Former Saugatuck Mayor Barry Johnson, who Andrus said is a friend and mentor to The Mitten.

“That bar is pretty much the centerpiece of ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Jobsite Brewing Co. expected to open to public within next month
Expected to open to the public within the next month, Jobsite Brewing Co. is set to become the fourth craft beer brewing company in Stratford, Ontario, the Beacon Herald reported on June 9.

The new company will be located on the former Pounder Brothers building on Cambria Street and right behind local craft distillery Junction 56.

Jobsite was created by Stratford residents and former construction workers – therefore the company’s name – Phil Buhler and Dave Oldenburger.

They say their goal is to make the site a place where both craft beer aficionados and those just getting into the trend can sit, have a beer and enjoy themselves.

“We want to be a comfortable place where people just would like to come for a casual drink and just relax,” Oldenburger said.

“We have never been interested in the sale side of it; we just would like to see people feel free to come here and see them enjoy the product.”

Buhler even said they don’t have plans to try to sell their beers at the LCBO. Instead, they want to keep it all local.

“That’s not an interest of us at all,” he said. “We are really hoping we can sell most of it right here, and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Limitless Brewing set to become Lenexa’s newest brewery
For every Johnson Countian who has wandered through another city’s streets lined with microbreweries and food trucks and wondered, “When will we have that here?” Lenexa may have an answer, the Shawnee Mission Post reported on June 8.

Limitless Brewing is set to become perhaps the second such business in the county, now that it has found a location and gotten the blessing of the city’s planning commission.

The commission’s approval came June 4, culminating a year-long search for a workable location. If the full city council approves it June 19, construction will begin right away at 9765 Widmer Road so that it can possibly be open by Thanksgiving, said Dave Mobley, co-owner.

The business will be in a light industrial area a few blocks south of Lenexa’s Old Town. Mobley will lease 4,800 square feet of larger building, with a production area in back and 1,100 square feet for a tap room out front. He also plans to have a food truck parked nearby on weekends and during non-business hours on weekdays.

That’s a business model well known to cities like Denver, but rarer in Johnson County. The nearest comparable tap room/microbrewer Mobley could think of is Red Crow Brewing Company of Spring ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: The Bainbridge Brewing Alehouse coming to downtown Winslow
Just steps from the ferry terminal on Bainbridge Island, Bainbridge Brewing will soon open a new taproom in downtown Winslow: the Bainbridge Brewing Alehouse. The company recently announced on Facebook that it is taking over the alehouse formerly known as The Alehouse on Winslow, a beer-focused bar on the main drag in downtown Winslow, the Washington Beer Blog reported on June 7.

According to that announcement, “Today (June 1st) we took possession of the space and we hope to reopen it as the Bainbridge Brewing Alehouse just as soon as we are legally allowed to sell you delicious beer there! The crew at the Alehouse have done a marvelous job over the last five years and we will be preserving everything we all love about the place and, if even possible, improving on it.”

The new Bainbridge Brewing Alehouse will showcase the company’s own beers alongside a curated collection of other northwest brews and ciders. They will welcome dogs. The new location will be 21+ only (probably a matter of licensing). Expect music and trivia regularly, board games always, and sports on the TVs.

Bainbridge Brewing hopes to reopen the Alehouse during the week of June 10th, but that’s dependent on licensing and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Baderbrau brewery closes ahead of ownership change
Baderbrau, the South Side brewery and taproom located about a mile south of McCormick Place, closed on June 9 as a precursor to new ownership. There are plans to reopen the taproom, which also served food, once a sale is completed. Several details are still being worked out, but — for now — the taproom will stay closed at 2515 S. Wabash Avenue, Chicago, the Eater Chicago reported on June 11.

All operations, including brewing, have ceased in the interim. The taproom opened in late 2014, as Baderbrau, which specializes in Czech-style lagers, resurfaced in 2012. The brand debuted in 1989, but its popularity lumbered and it faded in the late 1990s. New ownership built a 25,000-square-foot brewery and seemingly found a South Side niche as a spot for McCormick Place convention attendees in an area with sparse food and beverage options. The brewery’s low-alcohol beers included South Side Pride. It comes in a black and white can as a nod to the White Sox.

Last year, the brewery partnered with Chef Luciano, a nearby Italian restaurant, to start serving food. They went full brewpub on the second floor with creative bar food like the macaroni and cheese waffle.

While the brewpub should ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SD: Buffalo Ridge Brewing Company breaks ground in Hartford
On Monday, June 11, the Buffalo Ridge Brewing Company broke ground in Hartford, SD, reported KSFY.

The city has been working on the project since January.

The 4,000 square-foot brewery will feature a rotating tap list of 12-to-14 beers. They said it is amazing to see it all finally coming together, and they can’t wait to see what it will do for the growth of Hartford.

"It'll bring new life to our downtown here which hasn't seen a new business in over 40 years, constructed brand new and will give our folks here in town, our residents, an additional activity to do with their families," Jesse Fonkert, Hartford Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development director, said.

Buffalo Ridge Brewing Company is set to open in the fall.

Brewery news USA, MA: Walden Woods Brewing’s plans for Marlborough location fall through
Plans have fallen through for a nano-brewery that was expected to open on Main Street in Marlborough, MassLive.com reported on June 8.

The owners of Walden Woods Brewing announced in a Facebook post on June 8 that the brewery will not open for business. They had planned to open the two-barrel brewery and taproom in the Victoria Building in the heart of downtown Marlborough.

"We would like the entire community to know how hard we fought to save our vision - this little brewery - but in the end, the battle was lost," Alida Orzechowski and Chris Brown wrote in the post.

In mid-March, the pair announced that the opening of the taproom would be delayed due to a "temporary but unpreventable set back."

Orzechowski and Brown have not said what hindered their plans and could not be reached for comment on June 8.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Velké Popovice Brewery invests $4 mln to increase production capacity
Velké Popovice Brewery, part of the Plzeňský Prazdroj, has invested $4 mln to increase its production capacity of its Kozel brand by almost one-fifth, to 49,000 hectolitres per week or 2 million hectolitres per year, the Drinks Business Review reported on June 12.

The investment has been made in response to growing popularity from consumers both in the Czech Republic and on international markets, where Kozel is the best-selling of all Czech beer brands.

The total investment in expanding the Velké Popovice capacity amounted to CZK91 mln ($4.19 mln) of which CZK63 mln ($2.9 mln) went into the Brewhouse and the rest into the warehousing facility.

Velké Popovice brewery manager Petr Kofron said: “We decided to go for this investment last March, the actual works commenced in August and carried on through the winter. Thanks to which it’s all done now at the start of the key peak season and we are all ready to meet the beer demand for Kozel in full.”

Brewery news South Africa: Liquor Products Amendment Bill to soon come into law
The Select Committee on Land and Mineral Resources has adopted the Liquor Products Amendment Bill and has confirmed that it will soon come into law, BusinessTech reported on June 13.

In a statement released on June 13, the committee explained that the bill seeks to amend the current Liquor Products Act to broaden its scope of regulation.

One of the key changes will be the regulation of beer, contemporary beer, traditional African beer and other fermented beverages which had previously been exposed to a loophole which allowed for any product labelled as ‘beer’ or ‘ale’ to be manufactured and sold in the country.

While the committee raised concerns about the practicality of regulating the production of traditional African beer and other fermented beverages, chairperson of the committee, Olifile Sefako, said the bill has good intentions and should not be misconstrued in relation to suppressing traditional practices or suffocating entrepreneurship.

The second major change being introduced by the bill is a reduction of the amount of alcohol not classified as liquor products – meaning that the minimum alcohol content in beverages will now be set to 0.5%, as opposed to the current 1.0%.

Other changes include new regulations and compulsory registration for bottlers, plans to make ...More info on site

Brewery news Angola & Mozambique: Grupo Castel Angola starts exporting to Mozambique
Grupo Castel Angola and Mozambique’s Moz Bebidas on June 8 signed a collaboration agreement enabling the Angolan company to start shipping its production to Mozambique. The company plans to send its first two 50-tonne containers of beer to the new market soon, Jornal de Angola reported on June 9.

The company intends to ship a total of nine or ten containers to Mozambique this year, it is reported.

The brand was founded in 1947 by Companhia União de Cervejas de Angola (Cuca), which then belonged to Central de Cervejas Portuguesa. In 1976, the plant was nationalized. After its privatisation, since the nineties, the beer has been produced at breweries in Luanda, Catumbela, Lobito and Cabinda.

Besides Cuca, Moz Bebidas imports and distributes in Mozambique the Coca-Cola brands, Portugal’s Superbock, Heineken, and other.
