World: New report shows demand for craft beer not likely to slow down any time soon
|
Consumer demand for artisan beer is not likely to slow down any time soon, according to a new report from a global science company, The Morning Advertiser reported on June 14.
Royal DSM published The Craft Revolution in Brewing report, which surveyed 3,300 consumers in seven countries in Europe and the US, also stated that three quarters (75%) cited taste above everything else, including price, when they make their purchase decision.
About two thirds of consumers said they were attracted to craft beer because it is a premium, high-quality product.
The same number said they felt drinking craft beer was ‘more special’ than drinking regular beer. Quality, therefore, is becoming the byword of the brewing industry today, according to DSM.
The report stated that in the past two years, just under half of the craft drinkers surveyed said they now drink more craft beer.
Just 6% of this group are drinking less craft beer. The greatest increase took place in those aged 18 to 30. This rise is eating into regular beer consumption with 56% of respondents saying they drink less regular beer now.
Craft drinkers value ‘locally brewed’ beer but this is less about where it originates from and more about how the product is

Germany: Beer cartel trial opens in Germany
|
A judicial trial concerning a group of breweries which were accused of forming an illegal beer cartel in Germany opened at the Duesseldorf Higher Regional Court on June 13, Xinhua reported on June 14.
The court will consider an appeal by the German subsidiary of the Danish Carlsberg brewery against hefty fines first imposed on the company by the Federal Cartel Office back in 2014. At the time, the German antitrust authorities collected damages worth 338 million euros (398 million U.S. dollars) from 11 companies, one industry association and 14 managers for allegedly having colluded to raise beer prices paid by consumers.
The largest share of those fines, 222 million euros, was shouldered by the Radeberger Group, owned by the German foodstuffs producer Dr. Oetker, and Carlsberg Germany. The German subsidiary of the Belgian Anheuer-Busch InBev brewery evaded fines entirely by acting as the principal witness in the antitrust investigations, while other companies such as Bitburger, Veltins, Warsteiner and Krombacher also cooperated with the Federal Cartel Office and were handed relatively modest fines.
However, the Radeberger Group and Carlsberg Germany launched a challenge to the Federal Cartel Office's decisions in their respective cases before the Duesseldorf Higher Regional Court. Radeberger Group subsequently pulled

USA: MillerCoors might consider raising prices to compensate for higher aluminium tariffs
|
Getting buzzed on a 12-pack of Coors may be about to get more expensive for the US consumers, TheStreet.com reported on June 14.
MillerCoors, the maker of Miller Lite and Coors Lite, might have to consider raising prices to compensate for losing $40 million in profits due to aluminum tariffs, CEO Gavin Hattersley told Bloomberg. Though Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross insisted that tariff would have minimal effects on American brewers when it was first proposed in March, Hattersley said that raising prices by 50 cents per 12-pack would cause the beverage market to be "hammered."
"I can't just go to the shareholders and say, 'You're just going to have to accept my profit's going to be $40 million less,'" Hattersley told Bloomberg from MillerCoors' new plant in Milwaukee. "It doesn't work that way."
The tariff is equal to a $347.7 million tax on the industry and could lead to the loss of 20,291 jobs, President and CEO of the Beer Institute President Jim McGreevy said in a statement.
"It's going to be something that's going to put jobs at risk and would be against the U.S. consumer," Carlos Brito, CEO of Anheuser Busch Inbev NV, which makes Budweiser, Corona and Stella Artois, said of

Italy: Eight out of ten Italians drink beer

Eight out of 10 Italians drink beer and 70% favour special brews, a DOXA survey for the Birra Moretti Observatory said on June 14.
The number of beer drinkers has risen 34% over the last 10 years, the survey said, with only six out of 10 drinking beer in 2008.
Per capita consumption is substantially steady at 31 litres today compared to 30 litres 10 years ago, much lower than the European average.

Japan & Myanmar: Kirin’s Myanmar subsidiary admits donating to Myanmar army during Rohingya crisis
|
The Japanese government has been urged to investigate “immoral” payments made by a subsidiary of one of the country’s most popular breweries that appears to have gone to Myanmar’s military, The Guardian reported on June 15.
Kirin Holdings Company has admitted its offshoot, Myanmar Brewery, made a payment late last year, during the height of the against the Rohingya population in Rakhine state.
The subsidiary made three donations to Myanmar authorities, worth a total of $30,000 (£22,584), between 1 September and 3 October 2017. Kirin Holdings Company confirmed the payments in correspondence with Amnesty International, who published the letters on June 14.
One donation, worth $6,000, intended to help victims of violence in Rakhine, was accepted by the commander in chief of the Myanmar military, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Kirin confirmed.
The brewery said the commander had accepted the donations in his capacity as a government representative, but admitted it did not know how the funds were used.
Kirin has banned all new charitable donations in Myanmar and is conducting a human rights assessment of Myanmar Brewery’s suppliers and business partners.
Amnesty International branded the payments unethical and said Kirin’s clientele would be dismayed by the possibility that they were inadvertently supporting the actions of

Tanzania: Confederation of Tanzania Industries calls for improvement of business environment for producers of beer and spirits
|
The Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI) has called on the government to improve the business environment for manufactures of beers and spirits, The Citizen reported on June 14.
In the event, the Confederation proposes maintaining the current excise duty rates on beer and spirits, but reduce excise duty on ready-to-drink (RTD) products to Sh765 a litre.
Currently, RTDs are charged as spirits – at Sh3,481 per litre – when they have the same alcohol content as beer: six per cent.
CTI also calls for the removal of the excise duty on beer produced from 100 per cent local raw materials.
“Maintaining the current excise duty structure on beer and spirits would be healthy for the industry and government revenue, as well as for Tanzanian consumers, employees and farmers,” a statement availed to BusinessWeek reads in part.
On the issue of maintaining jobs, Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) has a workforce of 800 employees, according to CTI.
The beer industry aids growth of the agricultural sector via contract farming involving with local farmers. As it is, SBL have a network of 300 farmers, which it looks forward to expanding with time.
Further increases of excise duty on beer and spirits would negatively affect prices, leading to declines in sales

South Africa: SABMiller confirms commitment to business transformation still part of long-term business plans
|
SABMiller has briefed Parliament’s portfolio committee on economic development on its progress in meeting the conditions for its merger with global brewery giant AB InBev, saying its commitment to business transformation and development has not fizzled out since the tie-up, fin24 reported on June 14.
In 2016, SABMiller and AB InBev wrapped up a deal which would create the largest beer producer in the world. AB InBev then became SAB’s holding company, and SAB would continue operating under its name in South Africa.
The Competition Commission assessed the transaction and approved it, under specific conditions. These included the protection of any South African workers from retrenchment, diversifying certain aspects of SAB’s business so small enterprises and localising the company’s product inputs.
SAB’s vice president of legal and corporate affairs in Africa, Doreen Kosi, told the portfolio committee that the company’s R1 bln public interest commitments were not just a matter of complying with the Competition Commission’s conditions, but aimed at long-term business growth.
Head of SAB’s regional strategic programmes unit, Zoleka Lisa, said the company would invest R50 mln over five years to help build and support black, women and youth-owned enterprises through mentorship, marketing and market linkages.
She said another R150 mln would be
