RESIDUES OF HOP PESTICIDES IN BEER
ABSTRACT
Hops have to be treated with pesticides, otherwise a
supply of sufficient quantity and quality is unrealistic.
Also the development in detection methods has lead
to increasingly low detection limits. Together with the
Team of HVG, Barth-Haas experts looked into the transfer rates of hop
pesticides from hops into beer with different hopping
loads. Pesticides show a wide range from zero to good
solubility in beer with transfer rates from hops to beer
ranging from 10% to 82%. These levels were found in
kettle hopped and dry hopped beers, meaning that
there is no significant reduction of pesticides from wort
to beer. The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR)
sets maximum residue levels (MRLs) and confirms that
there is no danger for consumers.

USA, NC: Hi-Wire Brewing to build its third site in Durham, NC
|
Asheville, North Carolina based Hi-Wire Brewing already boasts two locations in one of the most visited beer towns in America. The state of North Carolina will soon be able to claim a third, this time in the city of Durham, the Beer Street Journal reported on June 26.
The “Durham Fun Zone” is expected to open by the end of 2018 at 800 Taylor Street. The 8,884 square foot space boasts 24 taps for Hi-Wire beers, as well as guest taps, and a plethora of games like shuffleboard, table tennis, and foosball tables.
While not a part of the initial build-out, space has been dedicated for a future pilot brewing system. This new construction is part of the Golden Belt campus in Durham, a 320,000 square foot facility that was once a textile and tobacco facility.
Currently, the brewery operates their original brewery in Asheville’s South Slope area, as well as their “Big Top” production facility less than a mile from city center.
The brewery currently expects the Durham Fun Zone to open in late October, barring any construction delays.

USA, NY: Three new breweries coming to Brooklyn over the next few months
|
Over the last 10 years, the number of breweries in Kings County has overflowed, from just three in 2009 (Brooklyn Brewery, Sixpoint, and Kelso) to more than 20 today. There is no sign that the trend is slowing down — over the next few months, three established breweries will start making suds in Brooklyn: Braven Brewing, Grimm Ales, and Stillwater Artisanal Ales, the Brooklyn Daily reported on June 25.
The brewer behind Stillwater, which has spent the last eight years creating award-winning beers as a “gypsy brewer,” renting equipment at various commercial breweries, says that opening in the borough of Kings is a natural fit.
“Brooklyn is one of the hottest, most cosmopolitan places in the world right now; with Stillwater being a rather ‘global’ brand, it made sense to proverbially put down roots where so many of the worlds cultures have representation,” said Brian Strumke. “It also helps that we live in Brooklyn, in Williamsburg.”
Strumke has grand plans for his upcoming facility, called “Production” and opening in Greenpoint in the fall.

Canada, ON: Bench Brewing opening later this week in Ontario
|
A brewery that has been in the works for close to two years has announced that it will be officially opening later this week in the heart of Ontario’s Niagara wine and fruit country, Canadian Beer News reported on June 25.
Bench Brewing has been founded by Matt Giffen, and was launched in 2016 with contract brewed versions of beers including Balls Falls Session IPA, Twenty Mile Farmhouse Ale, and Citra Grove Dry-Hopped Sour available retail outlets and licensees while construction of its bricks-and-mortar brewery took place.
Located in the former Maple Grove Public School plus a new addition totalling 20,000-square-feet, all sitting on 8 acres of land, the Bench facility includes a “50hL brewing system, a tap and tasting room, a beer garden, a barrel aging facility, and our very own hops field.”
The brewery is also notable for featuring a two section brewhouse separated by an airlock, with one dedicated to “clean” beers made with traditional brewing yeasts, and the other to beers brewed with wild and funky yeasts. The latter section includes one of the largest coolships in North America which will be used for open-air fermentation.

USA, MI: Ellison Brewery + Spirits to open second location in Lansing
|
Ellison Brewery + Spirits will open a second location in REO Town, Lansing, the Lansing State Journal reported on June 23.
The brewery is expected to open at the end of the year in a building at 1314 S. Washington Ave. owned by Quality Dairy, according to information released by Lansing Mayor Andy Schor's office.
Ellison plans to incorporate the history of R.E. Olds, REO Town and Diamond REO into the design of both the interior and exterior.
The historic building was damaged in a fire in July. Built in 1917, it has served as a factory garage for REO Motors and the headquarters of the 46th Infantry Division, Michigan National Guard. It is the last REO Motors building left standing in the city.
Quality Dairy is leasing the building to Ellison Brewery.
“We are immensely excited about our relationship with Ellison Brewery,” said Ken Martin, Quality Dairy president. “Aaron (Hanson) and Eric (Elliott) are outstanding local entrepreneurs.
"They are committed to holding on to the rich heritage of the building, and will do Lansing proud with their newest venture here in REO Town."

Canada, BC: The Beer Farmers now open in Pemberton
|
A new brewery situated on a fourth-generation family farm in BC’s Pemberton Valley is now open for business, the Canadian Beer News reported.
The Beer Farmers has been founded by the Miller family – son Will, father Bruce, and mother & brewer Brenda – on the farm that was founded by their ancestor W.M. Miller in 1895.
Operating in recent years as potato farm Across The Creek Organics, the farm is now also growing barley and hops that are being used in a number of its beers.
Beers available now – or soon – in the brewery tasting room and growler bar include Draft Horse Farmhouse Ale (5.7% abv), Farmer’s Daughter Biere de Table (4.3% abv), Locals Only Lager (5.6% abv), BlackSheep Stout (6% abv), Cover Crop Hazy IPA (6% abv), and City Slicker IPA (7.2% abv).

Canada, NL: Motion Bay Brewing cancels plans to open in Petty Harbour
|
The Western Star reports a brewery that had been planning to launch later this year in Petty Harbour on the eastern shore of Newfoundland will no longer be opening.
Motion Bay Brewing was being founded by a team that included partners Patricia Dellapinna, Shannon Best, Chris Mackey, and Jana Muise, who had taken on the lease of a portion of the Fisherman’s Co-Op Building in the town to open the brewery and taproom.
Via a post on the brewery’s Facebook page published over the weekend, the partners announced that “due to circumstances beyond our control we are unable to proceed with our brewery project.” No reasons for the cancellation or additional details were given.

China: Beer sales spike during World Cup
|
Beer orders placed on Chinese food delivery apps and the country’s leading e-commerce websites have surged during this year’s World Cup, The Drinks Business reported on June 25.
Orders placed on Meituan, a popular Chinese food delivery app, jumped by 40% in the 15 minutes before the start of the first World Cup match between Russia and Saudi Arabia, wrote SCMP. Other takeout food including crayfish and tonic soups had also seen sharp increases.
The app is promising 24-hour food delivery during World Cup that runs from 14 June to 15 July. Other similar apps including Alibaba’s Ele.me and Hema supermarkets are also rolling out similar promotions. Ele.me received beer orders from 150,000 users on the first night of the World Cup, up 167% compared with the same period last year.
On the group’s retail platform Tmall, its daily beer sales reached 1.3 million bottles on 17 May ahead of the game, wrote China Daily. The majority of the buyers were restaurants and pubs.

UK: Food wholesalers start to ration beer and cider supplies due to CO2 shortage
|
A massive shortage of food-grade carbon dioxide (CO2) has ratcheted up fears of disruption to Europe’s meat and fizzy drink supplies, CNBC reported on June 27.
A shortfall of CO2 in Europe comes at a time of excitement over the World Cup soccer tournament and amid peak season for summer barbecues. The ill-timed crisis has subsequently prompted several big name producers in the food and drinks industry to warn consumers of major shortages over the coming weeks.
The trade journal Gas World — which was the first to report on an EU-wide shortage of CO2 earlier this month — described it as the “worst supply situation to hit the European carbon dioxide business in decades.”
One of the largest sources of EU food-grade CO2 has traditionally come from major ammonia plants. But at least five gas producers in Northern Europe began a planned shutdown during the early summer months to resolve maintenance issues.
Meanwhile, a number of other EU bio-ethanol plants — which provide an alternative source of CO2 — also went offline for summer repair work. The U.K. was thought to be the hardest hit by the closures, with only one major CO2 plant seen to be operating at present.

UK: A group of monks starts to brew UK’s first Trappist beer
|
A group of merry monks have become the first in the UK to brew their own Trappist beer, TLE reported on June 26.
The powerful 7.4 per cent proof ale has been crafted by monks at Mount St Bernard Abbey near Whitwick, Leics.
The ale, named Tynt Meadow after the field where the monastery has been since 1835, will be sold at selected bars and bottle shops next month.
Monks started production in March and head brewer Father Michael describes the beer as “an English ale with English ingredients, but with a definite Trappist style to it.”
The original recipe for the beer brewed at the monastery was lost over time but the monks have worked closely with other Trappist groups to create a classic ‘table beer’.
According to the monks, Tynt Meadow is, “mahogany-coloured, with a subtle, warm red hue, and a lasting beige head. Its aroma carries hints of dark chocolate, liquorice, and rich fruit flavours.
“The beer is full-bodied, gently balancing the taste of dark chocolate, pepper and fig. It leaves a warm and dry finish on the palate.”
It’s brewed with English hops and barley, using an English strain of yeast and twice-fermented, first in a tank, and then in the bottle.

Norway: Historic brewery in Drammen runs out of CO2 and halts production
|
Norway’s historic family-owned brewery Aass in Drammen has run out of the liquid carbon dioxide (CO2) it needs to produce beer and other carbonated soft drinks. Several other breweries are also running short because of a shortage in Northern Europe of the ingredient that makes drinks bubbly, NewsInEnglish.no reported on June 27.
Petter Nome, head of Norway’s trade association for breweries and bottlers, told state broadcaster that Aass in Drammen was just one of those facing serious production problems. “If the breweries don’t receive deliveries (of CO2) before the weekend, they’ll run out,” Nome said, adding that will quickly be noticeable at retailers, bars and restaurants that will run out of carbonated drinks.
“We probably won’t get any CO2 for a week,” Christian Aass og Aass Bryggeri told NRK. Local producer and distributor Praxair Norge said the CO2 shortage, which also threatens a major water treatment plant in Oslo, was so acute that it had to priortize customers that need CO2 within health care, animal welfare and security.

India: Vijay Mallya seeks approval to sell frozen assets to settle bank dues
|
Fugitive Indian businessman Vijay Mallya has sought court approvals to sell some frozen assets worth Rs13,900cr in a fresh attempt to settle bank dues owed by his now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines, Indiainfoline reported on June 26.
Mallya and United Breweries Holdings (UBHL) filed an application before a court in the southern state of Karnataka seeking permission to repay creditors from the proceeds of the sale on June 22, according to a statement on June 26.
“I respectfully say that I have made and continue to make every effort, in good faith, to settle with the public sector banks,” Mallya, who now lives in the UK, said in the statement. “If politically motivated extraneous factors interfere, there is nothing that I can do.”
Mallya, 62, is fighting numerous lawsuits in the UK and his native country over fraud and money-laundering allegations after Indian lenders, under pressure from regulators to recover money from defaulters, have gone after the flamboyant former billionaire for an unpaid debt of around Rs9,300cr owed by his carrier that was grounded in 2012. Indian authorities have also desperately sought his extradition from the UK.
