WHATEVER IRON MALT BRINGS IN - HOPS CAN FIX IT!

ABSTRACT
A German research team discovered a couple of years ago that hops act as a chelator for iron, and this can help to improve oxidative stability. Their most recent work investigates hops capability of reducing iron in the brewing process from different special malt types. The results of their study indicate that this only works for a certain amount of accessible iron.

Brewery news USA: Mid-year off-premise craft beer sales up just 1.7%
Midway through 2018, off-premise volume sales of craft beer across a variety of large-scale retail stores in the US are up just 1.7 percent, according to market research firm IRI Worldwide, Brewbound reports.

While craft beer dollar sales at grocery, club, drug, dollar, mass merchandiser and convenience stores were just shy of $2 billion through June 17, up 2.9 percent year-to-date, the most recent trends point to a slowdown as brewing companies head into an important summer season.

Volume sales of craft beer at multi-outlet and convenience stores were up just 0.2 percent during the latest four-week scan, while dollar sales increased 1.4 percent.

Sales for some of the country’s largest craft beer suppliers – Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, New Belgium Brewing, Craft Brew Alliance and Deschutes Brewery – are in the red.

Off-premise volume sales of California-headquartered Sierra Nevada Brewing, which is ranked by industry trade group the Brewers Association as the third largest craft beer company in the U.S., were down 2.2 percent during the four-week period ending June 17. The company’s year-to-date trends, however, are about flat.

Year-to-date volume sales of New Belgium, CBA and Deschutes products, meanwhile, were down 10.4 percent, 8 percent, and 10.4 percent, respectively, thru the halfway point ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Three friends launching Pour Man's Brewing Co. in Ephrata by end of July
Three friends are opening a new brewery in Ephrata, the Reading Eagle reported on June 30.

Ryan Foltz, Sam Son and James Stauffer are opening Pour Man's Brewing Co. at 284 S. Reading Road. They hope to be open by the end of July.

As the brewery's opening gets closer and closer, Foltz said he and his partners are both excited and nervous

"We'll be more excited when we get through all the permitting," he said. "Now it's just more nerve-wracking than anything. There's so many hoops to jump through."

Foltz, Son and Stauffer have been homebrewing together for about seven years. Foltz and Son also used to work together.

"That's how we started homebrewing together," Foltz said. "We used to do homebrew competitions, and Sam and I would talk about brewing pretty much all day at work, and we would joke about opening up a brewery but never thought it would get too serious until some of the laws changed and you were able to get a brewery license instead of a liquor license, so it became more real for us."

Foltz is leaving his job to work full-time at the brewery, and the other two are keeping their jobs.

The brewery is located in a ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, AB: Elite Brewing & Cidery now open in Calgary’s Crescent Heights neighbourhood
A new brewpub with a military history theme is now open in Calgary’s Crescent Heights neighbourhood, the Canadian Beer News reported.

Elite Brewing & Cidery explains its name and theme as follows:

Elite Brewing concept is similar to elite military units like the British SAS, US Navy Seals and Delta forces. Those soldiers are handpicked and go thought tremendous training and character testing. The remaining who are filtered through the quality testing processes become the Elite! These Elite soldiers are then provided with the best equipment available to aid their mission success. Elite Brewing has taken these same traits of these premium units and has applied them to building a craft brewery.

Elite features a 143-seat restaurant and taproom, with 32 taps pouring a selection of both house-brewed beers and ciders and other local craft brews. The Elite beers will rotate on a constant basis, although some may go through a number of iterations as part of a special Mark Series, with each given a military-style “MK” number designation to indicate its version.

The brewery also notes that it will not be selling packaged product, although limited kegs may be available for other local bars “if there is enough to go around.” And in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Sandhills Brewing in the works in downtown Mission
A new small brewery and taproom is in the works in downtown Mission, the Shawnee Mission Post reported on July 2.

Jonathan Williamson and his brother Charles just opened Sandhills Brewing a few months ago in Hutchinson, Kan. Now, they’ve found a good spot along Johnson Drive to create “a little neighborhood taproom” — and a second nanobrewery to boot.

The Williamson brothers are taking over the space at 5612 Johnson Drive (formerly Sue’s Accessories, which closed after authorities raided it for selling counterfeit goods), just down the street from Twisted Sisters, which closed its doors last weekend. Jonathan Williamson said he anticipates public discussion and review of their special permit application to brew and serve beer by the Mission planning commission July 23.

“If you happen to live in downtown Mission within 200 feet of the space, we’d love to have your support at the planning commission meeting,” Jonathan Williamson added.

It’s part of a wave of brewery-taproom businesses coming to the Shawnee Mission area. Transport Brewery is working to transform a space next to the Aztec theatre on Johnson Drive in Shawnee into a microbrewery and taproom. And Limitless Brewery has plans for a similar operation in Lenexa. Martin City Brewing Company ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands says its first two major Corona innovations already exceeding expectations
Corona Premier and Corona Familiar – the first major Corona innovations in over 25 years – are already exceeding expectations, says Constellation Brands, while it is also experimenting with premium spiked refresher Corona Refresca in test markets, BeverageDaily.com reported on July 3.

Corona Premier – ‘a smooth, perfectly balanced lager with only 90 calories and 2.6g carbs’ – is a light beer launched in the US in March. Corona Familiar – a ‘full flavored lager that taps into the tradition of sharing with family and friends’ - was launched in Constellation Brands’ major Hispanic markets in 12 oz bottles last year.

The Corona portfolio is brewed in Mexico by Constellation Brands and imported and marketed exclusively to the US by the company. Corona Extra has been the top imported beer in the US for more than 20 years and the number five beer brand overall.

Constellation Brands says the test launch of Corona Premier last spring validated the interest in a light beer alternative, targeting men over 35 who want to trade up. “Corona Premier offers the light beer experience men 35 plus have been waiting for …these guys have upgraded just about every brand in their life since ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Spring Hill Brewing getting ready for grand opening on July 13
When Greg Kamerdze brews beer late at night, he wakes the dead.

Doors slam. Shadows dance. Footsteps echo down the hallways.

“I think they’re thirsty,” he says of the ghosts he thinks haunt the old building.

Located on Varley Street in the North Side’s Spring Hill neighborhood, for nearly a century the 15,000-square-foot behemoth housed the Workingmen’s Beneficial Union (WBU) social hall. Then it sat dormant for more than a decade. Now, thanks to new owners Bill Brittain and Natasha Dean, the property is home to an event space, an urban farm and Kamerdze’s Spring Hill Brewing, NEXTpittsburgh reported on July 2.

The 36-year-old began making beer as a hobby, whipping up five-gallon batches in his Bloomfield kitchen. Once he decided that beer was his calling, Kamerdze, a long-time employee of big Burrito Full Service Catering, went on a brewery-hopping tour of the United States to help mold his business plan.

Now he operates on a 60-gallon system, often pulling all-nighters in the hilltop fortress to keep up with demand for his Belgian-style session ales.

“I wanted to do something that made people happy,” he says. “Beer makes people happy.”

When Spring Hill held a soft opening in April, visitors quaffed 15 kegs of beer in less ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Hop & Sting Brewing Company purchases assets and brands of Grapevine Craft Brewery
Upstart Texas beer maker Hop & Sting Brewing Company has purchased the assets and brands of Grapevine Craft Brewery from owner Glen Harrod, Brewbound reported on July 2.

Financial terms of the deal — which did not include the building and land — were not disclosed, but Hop & Sting co-owner Brian Burton told Brewbound that “it was something just barely within our budget.”

News of the sale was first reported by Guide Live, the Dallas Morning News’ entertainment vertical.

Speaking to Brewbound, Burton and Hop & Sting co-founder Jon Powell said they began discussing a contract brewing arrangement with Grapevine in January, but ended up pursuing an acquisition from Harrod; former owner Gary Humble had already “moved on” at the beginning of the year, he added.

Hop & Sting officially assumed control of Grapevine on June 1. Burton said the company retained all but one of Grapevine’s employees, who left for another job. They also hired an events coordinator and a delivery driver for self-distributing the company’s beer.

Powell and Burton have a long history with Grapevine — both are former brewers. In fact, several of Grapevine’s beers were created inside Powell’s parents’ Southlake, Texas, barn in 2013.

“We’ve been involved with Grapevine in one ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: SingleCut Beersmiths to release first beer brewed at new location
SingleCut Beersmiths, the New York City-based brewery that purchased the Shmaltz brewery facility off Van Patten Drive, will release its first beer brewed at the new location this week, the Daily Gazette said.

SingleCut General Manager Dan Bronson said the company started brewing in the new location in late May and hopes to be in full production by September, with kegs and cans from the new facility being distributed throughout the East Coast.

SingleCut is a rapidly growing craft brewery that was founded in 2012 in northern Queens. With the purchase of the Clifton Park facility, it will be able to increase its output in a way that was not possible at its smaller, Queens location.

"We're really excited to have that extra beer for all of our guests," Bronson said.

Shmaltz will retain its corporate identity and its labels, but it will return to its roots as a producer of beer brewed under contract by other companies. Shmaltz has had its own brewery for only the past five of its 22 years.

Bronson said SingleCut's clientele has been "dramatically under-served," for at least the past three years. SingleCut's beer, he added, was always meant to be accessible.

"It's really exciting," he said. "Our beer will ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NL: Dildo Brewing Company dodges salacious beer names
A recently opened brewery in Dildo, N.L. says it's mostly eschewing lewd puns in naming four new beers, in spite of ample opportunity, the Times Colonist reported on July 1.

The unusually named small town provided the Dildo Brewing Company and Museum with a chance to give its beers naughty names, but co-owner Angela Reid said they've managed to keep it classy — for the most part.

"We had a lot of fun, and of course, we had many ideas," she said in a phone interview. "It's always fun naming beer."

The building has been a museum for years, but it's recently been renovated to make it equal parts museum and brewhouse.

The names of the new beers are inspired by the sights and culture of the Newfoundland community. Reid said they act as a tribute to the small town, while also poking fun at its provocative name.

"We're trying to, as much as we can, keep things local and keep things a little bit light as well," said Reid.

The punniest beer on the list is "I'se Da Bye-PA:" an IPA referencing the traditional foot-stomping Newfoundland folk song "I'se The B'y."

Written in the Newfoundland English dialect, the name translates to standard English as "I'm the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Device’s Brewing new location now open in Sacramento
Device Brewing’s new location is now open at a new taproom at 1610 R St. in Midtown's Ice Blocks.

The small-batch craft brewery specializing in West Coast style ales recently won awards for its Chairman's Choice (an American Strong Ale) and Salted Caramel Porter at the California State Fair, as the Sacramento Bee reports.

The taproom has seating both indoors and outdoors. For now, food is provided by a rotating selection of food trucks, and patrons are also encouraged to bring their own food.

With a 4.5-star rating out of six reviews on Yelp so far, the new brewery has been warmly received by patrons.

"A bright, tasteful and tasty place to grab some brews!" wrote Kerensa U., who was the first to review the new spot on June 9. "I liked the clean, spacious interior and the staff was friendly and quick to move through the line."

Yelper Jason G. added, “They have food trucks now and they will be getting food delivered from Beast and Bounty when they open. TV's can be seen from everywhere you sit. Cool place!”

"Tasty beer. Wonderful people. Lovely atmosphere," Yelper Kenny R. summarized.

Device Brewing is open from 11 a.m.–midnight Sunday-Thursday and 11 a.m.–1 a.m. ...More info on site

Brewery news Zambia: AB InBev’s Zambian Breweries launches US$30 mln expansion project
AB InBev’s Zambian Breweries Plc on 28 June 2018 officially opened the US$30 million expansion project of the packaging line located on the Copperbelt, Zambia’s industrial and Mining hub, the Zambia Business Times reported.

Speaking at the official commissioning of the plant in Ndola, company operations director Franz Shepping said the introduction of the state of the heart hi-tech technology will help in improving production and ensure efficient use of resources such as water and energy.

“We are also investing in our employees through training them on how to effectively use and operate this advanced modern equipment,” he said. Shepping said the company is determined to continue contributing to the sustainable growth of the economy, as more than one thousand youths have been employed through the same project.

Minister of Trade, Christopher Yaluma who graced the occasion said the programs been undertaken by Zambian Breweries are a clear testimony of the company’s commitment to the growth of the local economy. “We have to engage the private sector if we are to achieve growth, it is everyone’s responsibility to improve the lives of people. We are committed to enhance the brewing sector and the economy at large,” Yaluma said.

Brewery news Germany: AB InBev resumes talks to sell German brands Hasseroeder and Diebels
Anheuser Busch InBev’s German unit said it was resuming talks to sell its small German beer brands Hasseroeder and Diebels as a planned sale to financial investor CK Corporate Finance has stalled, Reuters reported on July 2.

“CK Corporate Finance Group has so far not been able to meet all the contractual conditions to complete the transaction by mid-2018,” AB InBev Deutschland said in a statement on July 2.

The company said it was holding talks with selected interested parties in parallel to the sale to CK Corporate Finance Group.

“It is important to us now to make clear to all involved parties that we are actively working on alternatives and looking at offers, especially with an eye to our staff, brands and sites,” it said.

AB InBev said its goal was still a sale of the two beer brands and the associated breweries.

Brewery news Japan: Japan’s major brewers split over own-brand beers
Major Japanese beer companies are split over how to deal with own-brand products manufactured for such retailers as supermarkets and convenience stores, the Inquirer reported on July 2.

Own-brand products are products planned by retailers such as supermarkets and convenience stores and sold under their own brand labels. They outsource production to manufacturers. As they can cut such costs as distribution and advertisement expenses, they can sell their own-brand products for less than those of the big brands.

Kirin Brewery Co. has gone on the offensive by accepting a series of requests for manufacturing such own-brand products — known as “private brands” in Japan — but other beer firms, such as Asahi Breweries Ltd. have adopted a wait-and-see stance.

As the domestic market for beer and beer-like alcoholic beverages is shrinking, it has become more important for beer firms to cooperate with retailers. However, how to deal with own-brand beers has become a thorny issue for them, as such products are likely to compete with the manufacturers’ branded products.

In June, major supermarket chain operator Aeon Co. updated three beverages of its own-brand line-up of so-called third-segment quasi-beers, Topvalu Barreal.

The price for a 350-milliliter can remained the same at ¥84, but Aeon switched manufacturers ...More info on site

In July-May 2017/18, Ukrainian barley exports decreased 20% to 4.2 mln tonnes against 5.2 mln tonnes in the same period last season. Noteworthy, wheat exports declined to 16.3 mln tonnes or 3% less than in the same period in MY 2016/17.

At the same time, according to the State Statistics Service, barley inventories dwindled by 14.6% from a year ago, to a bit more than 709.3 thousand tonnes against 830.6 thousand tonnes in June 2017, UkrAgroConsult’s analysts note.

Brewery news Lithuania: Carlsberg and Brooklyn Brewery open new brewery in Lithuania
Danish brewing company Carlsberg and US-based Brooklyn Brewery have opened a new brewery in Lithuania, the Drinks Insight Network reported on July 2.

Called the Svyturys Brewery, the new facility is located in the Klaipeda port area. It was opened after three years of reconstruction work, which was carried out using a joint investment between the two companies.

Svyturys Brewery features a new craft beer line, a beer museum, a gastropub and a shop, as well as conference and degustation halls.

Svyturys-Utenos Alus’ managing director Rolandas Virsilas said: “Today the Svyturys Brewery embarks on a new journey, changing a closed and outdated brewing space into a modern, open and social place where it is all about brewing the perfect craft beer.

“Our ambition is to nurture and support the rich beer culture in Lithuania and to make Svyturys Brewery the centre of this culture not only within Lithuania but also in the entire Baltic region.

“I am sure that this day also marks the beginning of a greater change within the brewing market of Lithuania.”
