Brewery news USA, CO: Metric Brewing all set to open in Colorado Springs
After nearly a year of work, Metric Brewing is set to open to the public on Saturday, July 21. It's run by owner/brewers Mike Centanne and Chase Perry, the Colorado Springs Independent reported on July 17.

Centanne's a former homebrewer, known best for his work as brewer and co-founder at Iron Bird Brewing Company, which he helped start in 2014. Perry's a former yeast propagation tech at the Brewing Science Institute and, most recently, assistant brewer at Bristol Brewing Company.

Metric will open with nine beers on tap, as well as a crowler machine for those who want to take beer home. And given that they're eschewing flagships for a revolving selection with occasional re-brews, canny drinkers with have to take home their favorites when they can. They'll have limited presence in local bars and restaurants — Perry says they want to get a solid footing in their neighborhood before they start trying to expand.

Brewery news USA, NY: Ellicottville Brewing Company’s new facility in Little Valley already operational
Ellicottville Brewing Company opened its new 75,000-square-foot facility in Little Valley, New York. The project will allow for expansion of its commercial production and bottling operations and the addition of 40 new full-time jobs, the Area Development Online reported on July 18.

Ellicottville Brewing Company, which distributes its products to locations around the world, will also retain its 149 existing employees in New York State.

Founded in 1995, Ellicottville Brewing Company purchased the former Salamanca Beverage Corp. building at 202 Second Street to establish a new location in Little Valley. The facility adds to the company's three existing sites located in Ellicottville, Fredonia and Lakewood. The project included the construction of a production facility that is capable of making 180 barrels a day. The beer is then bottled, labeled and packaged for delivery locally and distributed to destinations as far away as South Korea.

The new site will also include the EBC Public Pub & Tasting Room which will feature food, music and festivals to create an attractive brewery destination in the region. A Craft Brewing Science Center is also planned as part of the experience, designed to demonstrate the core components of brewing, including the malting process, hops, water make-up, yeast biology, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Madisonville brewery Tap & Screw closes its doors
Madisonville brewery Tap & Screw has gone out of business, WCPO reported.

A message posted on the brewery's website on July 18 reads, "Tap & Screw Brewery is now closed. Thank you for your years of support."

A key padlock hung on the door of the brewery, which is located at 4721 Red Bank Road, and signage outside has been removed.

Brewery owners Tom and Adam Lorenz did not return calls and emails asking for comment. The father and son opened the original Tap & Screw location at 5060 Crookshank Road in Westwood in December 2014.

After closing the Westwood taproom in February 2017, Adam Lorenz said he and his father decided to move so they could ramp up beer production. They opened Tap & Screw's Madisonville location in June 2017.

The Lorenzes also planned to open a brewpub inside a former funeral home at 3026 Madison Road in Oakley. That deal fell through after the property's owners evicted them from the building.

Tom Lorenz and his son had spent a year trying to add parking spaces at the property before being evicted. At the time, Lorenz said he was contemplating a lawsuit.

The Lorenzes withdrew a request submitted to Cincinnati planning ...More info on site

Hops news Canada, BC: Canada’s largest hop farm no longer in operation
What was once dubbed Canada’s largest hop farm is no longer in operation, the Kamloops This Week reported on July 17.

Hops should be in full bloom this time of year on 220 acres of land across from Westsyde, where the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc had been growing the flowering plants commonly used in beer brewing, but the site now sits empty.

Tk’emlups Chief Fred Seymour told KTW the band has shut down its hop farm venture because it wasn’t making money.

“It’s all over, said and done with,” he said.

Seymour refused to provide further details regarding what went wrong with the business.

In 2016, Tk’emlups Coun. Howard Campbell, whose portfolio is business development, told KTW the band saw a long-term revenue stream in the hop farm, which employed about 10 people year-round and 15 to 20 people seasonally.

According to a 2015 study done for the provincial and federal agriculture ministries, the demand for hops is exploding, lit by the seemingly limitless growth of craft beer.

“It’s like any other business. It doesn’t come to fruition, we got to look at other options,” Seymour said, noting the band is now exploring other avenues for that tract of land. “We need infrastructure for sure on there.”

Brewery news Nigeria: Competition on the rise with the arrival of Budweiser in Nigeria
According to a report by a market research group, Global Data, Africa is the fastest growing region for beer consumption. Nigeria, however, leads the pack of 10 biggest beer drinking countries on the continent. Beer brands make up just 16 percent of alcohol consumption in the country, while other drinks (spirits and locally brewed drinks) make up 84 percent, the Nairametrics reported on July 19.

Until recently, the race for the biggest beer market share in the country was a two-horse race between Heineken N.V., owners of Nigerian Breweries Plc and Diageo, owners of Guinness Nigeria.

The narrative seems to have changed with the recent introduction of new products such as Budweiser, dubbed as the king of beers, from the stables of AB InBev, the parent company of International Breweries, into the Nigerian market. The battle now seems to be among three international players, which many have termed as the “Triangular Beer War”.

This article seeks to examine how major players in the beer business are handling the stiff competition and get a feel of consumers’ pulse about the new beer product, Budweiser.

The year 2011 ushered in a disruption in the beer market with the arrival of SABMiller, which was then the world’s ...More info on site

Brewery news India: United Breweries to pay 18% GST on profit from beer manufacturing units
United Breweries (UBL), which makes beer under the Kingfisher brand, is liable to pay an 18% GST on 'surplus profit' received from beer manufacturing units contracted by it to make and sell alcohol beverage under its brand name, the Financial Express reported on July 19 citing a ruling passed by Authority of Advanced Ruling (AAR) in Karnataka.

The order is likely to dent the profit of UBL as the tax would be inadmissible as input tax credit because potable alcohol is outside the GST ambit. “This payment of 18% GST on collections made by brand owner from brewery would burden the supply chain with additional tax. This tax payment would be non-creditable as the final product i.e. potable alcohol is outside the ambit of the GST,” Rajat Mohan, partner at AMRG & Associates, said.

Beer under the brands owned by UBL is manufactured by contract brewing/bottling plants (CBU), which also supply the product in the market. CBUs retain a part of profit from beer sales and pass on the ‘surplus profit’ to the brand owner.

UBL had approached the AAR to clarify GST applicability on profit earned by CBUs and its own share of sales proceeds. The authority concluded that CBUs are not ...More info on site
