HOP EXTRACT FOR DRY HOPPING
ABSTRACT
This topic sounds very up to date and trendy as many
craft brewers are looking into the possibility to use hop
extracts instead of cones or pellets for dry hopping.
In fact hop extracts and hop oils have been used for
dry hopping for about 100 years already, and here is a
nice article going back to 1983 showing the power and
suitability of CO2 extract for dry hopping.

Australia: More Australians choose mid-strength beers over full-strength options
|
More and more Aussie drinkers are choosing mid-strength beers and non-alcoholic beverages over full-strength brews, according to a new study.
Sales of non-alcoholic drinks have risen 57 percent in the past five years, according to the Euromonitor International’s Alcoholic Drinks In Australia report.
Mid-strength beer is also now among one of the fastest growing in popularity, making up 14.1 percent of the total beer market.
Euromonitor predicts brewing of non-alcohol beers will quadruple from the 2003 figure of two million litres to 12 million litres by 2022.
The report also shows the average national amount of alcohol consumed per person has fallen from 157.5 litres to 153 litres in 2017.
The interest in less strong beers and non-alcoholic beverages reflects a trend towards healthier living and better value by consumers between the ages of 18 to 34, Nielson reported last year.
"Millennials look for value but they also rate health factors such as low carb, calories, vitamin-fortified and organic as very important," the report said.
Sixty-two percent of Millennials also avoid certain products over concerns regarding environmental impact. Boomers on the other hand choose based on value and price.

The Philippines: San Miguel Food and Beverage to sell up to 20% of its equity to the public
|
Consumer powerhouse San Miguel Food and Beverage Inc. (SMFB) has tapped an army of banks to sell to the public up to 20 percent of its equity in an offering that could raise as much as $2.4 billion, potentially the largest capital-raising in the history of the local stock exchange, Inquirer.net reported on August 11.
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange on August 10, SMFB’s parent conglomerate San Miguel Corp. (SMC) said its board had approved the sale of up to 1.2 billion common shares of SMFB through a public offering.
Banking sources told the Inquirer the following banks would likely arrange this massive public offering deal: UBS, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank, BDO Capital and BPI Capital.
In a text message, SMC president Ramon S. Ang said the offering could involve as much as 20 percent of SMFB’s equity.
Based on Ang’s publicly stated target to achieve a $12-billion market capitalization for SMFB, the equity deal can amount to a maximum of $2.4 billion or around P127 billion.
The public offering of SMFB can thus become the largest equity deal in the PSE.

Kenya: Kenyans starting to appreciate imported beer

Kenyans' thirst for beer keeps growing and now they have slowly started appreciating the imported brands, the Business Daily reported on August 9.
“Generally, Kenyans are at a point where they are more adventurous and have discovered that there is a lot more than what we call brown beer,” said Maxam, the distributor of German beer, Warsteiner.
Traditionally drunk by mostly men, beer is now becoming a favourite drink for women and young drinkers. With beer consumption expected to grow at an impressive annual growth rate of 10.5 per cent between 2017 and 2021, there are great investment opportunities in sub-Saharan Africa for creative alcoholic drinks.
Germany's Warsteiner and Namibia's Windhoek, which returned to the Kenyan market a few months ago, are leading a host of other labels into tapping Kenya’s young market, offering imported beer at affordable rates.
“At Sh170 a bottle, it is all about making it affordable to win the hearts of people because there is a whole host of choices,” said a Maxam representative on the sidelines of a 'Gentleman's Luxury’ event' held in Westlands, Nairobi on August 9.

Germany: Hobby brewer gets same tax treatment as largest beer houses
|
A recent court ruling in Germany burdening a rogue hobby brewer with the same tax treatment as the nation’s largest beer houses is a case study on why not to mess with two of the most well-known pillars of German society: beer and bureaucracy, Bloomberg BNA reported on August 10.
As the craft-beer movement grips Germany amid falling sales from traditional brewers, it shows that market fads don’t diminish the deep-seated formalities that continue to govern Germany’s beloved beer market, Thomas Busching, a partner with Squire Patton Boggs in Frankfurt, told Bloomberg Tax Aug. 7.
“There’s a huge amount of administrative things that you need to comply with [in Germany] when you start a business,” he said. “It’s the same thing with beer brewers.”
Beer sales in Germany have been sinking year-on-year for decades. In 2017, German brewers sold 935 million litres of beer, a 16.6 percent decrease since 1993, according to Germany’s Federal Statistics Office.
As a result, tax revenue from domestic brews has also nosedived. The Federal Statistics Office estimates that taxable domestic sales have decreased by 26.6 percent since 1993, while tax-exempt beer, such as that produced by hobby brewers, has increased by 135 percent in that same timeframe.

Canada: Barley prices falling as early harvest weights on values
|
Barley prices in Western Canada are falling as an early harvest is weighing on values, the Western Producer reported on August 11.
“Prices have moderated here,” said Allen Pirness of Market Place Commodities Ltd. Lethbridge, Alta.
The surprise rally from last week ended as quickly as it began. Prices which started last week at about C$250 per tonne were down into the mid-C$240 per tonne range by the end of the week.
Pirness said the short-term rally is over now that harvest is underway earlier than normal.
He said dry conditions will likely play a role in how much crop farmers are able to get.
“It’s less than anticipated, but there’s still a crop. In some areas that we were wondering a month ago if they would have anything, it looks like they’re still going to have something.”
He said U.S. corn is always going to limit how high barley prices can go.
“Barley right now is still neck and neck with corn prices. If we saw more export demand on Canadian barley, well then, I can see a fall back to more U.S. corn being used,” he said.
