HOP EXTRACT FOR DRY HOPPING
ABSTRACT
This topic sounds very up to date and trendy as many
craft brewers are looking into the possibility to use hop
extracts instead of cones or pellets for dry hopping.
In fact hop extracts and hop oils have been used for
dry hopping for about 100 years already, and here is a
nice article going back to 1983 showing the power and
suitability of CO2 extract for dry hopping.

Canada: 2017-18 barley exports forecast to increase to 4-year high
|
For 2017-18, Canada’s barley exports are forecast to increase to a 4-year high of 2.85 mln tonnes due to the steady total supply, strong exports to China and lower world barley supplies, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reported on August 17.
Barley carry-out stocks are forecast to decrease by 55% to 0.95 million tonnes and remain below the previous three and five-year averages.
The Lethbridge in-store feed barley price increased by 35% due to the tight total barley supplies, strong export movement and the decline in the availability of other domestic feed grain substitutes.
For 2018-19, the nation’s barley-seeded area is forecast to increase 13% from 2017-18 (to 2.63 mln tonnes), a rebound from last year’s record low seeded area.
Production is forecast to increase 8% to 8.5 mln tonnes due to the higher area and a forecasted average total yield.
Despite higher production, lower carry-in stocks will cause total supply to decrease by 5% to 9.6 mln tonnes.
Total domestic use is forecast to remain unchanged at 6.275 mln tonnes due to lower feed use and only a slight increase in industrial use is expected.

Canada & USA: CMTC provides update on Canadian and US barley barley harvest
|
Canada’s Prairies has just suffered through a week of intense heat, with scorching temperatures hovering in the mid to upper 30s°C. In some areas in southern Saskatchewan the temperature reached 40°C. This oppressive heat only served to bake the crops in sections of the west, CMBTC reported on August 15.
What little rain that fell on the Prairies was variable and limited. Certainly the areas that received rain had the opportunity for crop growth with the heads filling, but in areas that did not get rain the crops were stressed.
Due to the excessive amount of hot and dry conditions, in many regions the crop developed quickly. As a result the heads did not get properly filled and the yields suffered.
Barley harvest has commenced in southern Alberta and the early results show yields down 20% and proteins in the high teens, with some farmers reporting up to 17% protein for their barley.

Crop ratings dropped throughout the province, especially in the southern and central sections. The excessive heat and variable rain events has adversely affected the yield potential of the crops. The north is the only area that has received some moisture and that has permitted the heads to fill.

USA & China: China drinking more Budweiser than the US
|
Domestic beer consumption in the US has fallen over the last two decades while China’s interest in American beer has spiked. Budweiser sales finally flipped in China’s favor in the first half of 2018 and the trend is expected to continue, The Beverage Daily reported on August 16.
Overall beer consumption in the US hasn’t changed much since 2000. Data from Rabobank shows that 23.5 bln litres of beer were consumed in the US in 2000, and 23.459 bln litres were consumed in 2017.
However, what types of beer people are drinking has evolved. Domestic beer used to make up 87.7% of total consumption in the US, and it fell to 67.6% in 2017. Foreign and craft beers together made up just 12.3% of US consumption in 2000, and has now increased to 32.4%.
US consumers are trending away from abundantly available domestic brews and are reaching for foreign imports instead. Instead of Budweiser, Heineken and Coors, people are choosing Corona, Modelo and Dos Equis.
The same trend is true in China, except they see Budweiser as a desirable foreign beer, more expensive than their local Chinese options. It’s something that is mirrored in all major beer drinking countries like Mexico, Brazil, the UK

USA, NY: Fairport Brewing’s new production facility to be fully operational in the next few weeks
|
It has been a turbulent year for Tim Garman and Fairport Brewing. The year has been filled with change and challenge, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported on August 15.
Monroe County's original farm brewery decided it had outgrown its production space on Turk Hill Road near the tasting room in the village of Fairport, then began to look for larger spaces in the area, and ultimately settled on University Avenue in Rochester.
Garman, FBC's owner, said the brewery picked a 9,500-square-foot building that formerly housed a commissary for Bruegger's Bagels. The new production will be fully operational in the next few weeks, Garman said. And there are plans to open a second tasting room there.
"We’re trying to do the right thing and grow," Garman said. "Grow and innovate."
All the while, Garman proposed a sizable expansion to the brewery's historic tasting room, a former Pure Oil Co. gas station constructed in 1934, at 99 S. Main St. in Fairport. That plan was presented to the village's Historical Preservation Commission, rejected, then modified, and rejected once again before the brewery appealed to the Village Board. UK: Spring malting barley harvest to produce enough quality grain for maltsters
|
The spring malting barley harvest is set to produce enough quality grain for the maltsters despite lower yields due to a shortened growing season in the UK, the Farmers’ Weekly reported on August 14.
A late wet spring followed by a summer heatwave has led to reduced harvests and generally higher nitrogen contents as nitrogen in barley crops was focused in fewer grains.
James Beamish, farm manager at the Holkham Estate on the north Norfolk coast, says yields of his spring malting barley were down about 1t/ha due largely to the very dry spring.
He grows 370ha of spring barley, and this year’s average yield was about 6t/ha compared with 7t/ha from the estate’s rolling medium-term yield average.
He grows two varieties – one-third Laureate and two-thirds Concerto – with quality mixed in terms of nitrogen content and green grains, but the crop should be OK for malting with the majority of its destined for Suffolk brewer Adnams.
“The yield was no surprise since we had no meaningful rain since 24 May until harvest,” Mr Beamish said from the 3,500ha farmed estate.

China & Australia: China buys 512,181 tonnes of Australian barley and sorghum in June
|
China was again Australia’s major coarse grains customer in June, taking 512,181 tonnes of barley and sorghum in total of the 658,656 tonnes shipped for the month, according to the latest export data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
Shipping stems indicate barley exports are now likely to tail off following above-average shipments in March in particular, and some vessels nominated will be ferrying grain from southern Australian ports to Brisbane and Newcastle to supply the drought-affected eastern market.
Likewise, sorghum shipments are now likely to slow, a function of nearly all of Australia’s 2018 export surplus coming from Central Queensland, and its harvest being well and truly over.
A much smaller-than-average amount of sorghum grown in New South Wales and southern Queensland has made its way to export this year, because of high domestic demand and limited production as a result of dry conditions in some areas.

Cyprus: Domestic beer consumption and export surge in July this year
|
The export and consumption of domestically-produced beer surged in Cyprus in July this year in comparison to the previous month and July last year, the Cyprus Mail reported on August 14.
According to CYSTAT data, exports and local consumption amounted to 5,361,323 litres in July 2018, compared to 5,195,758 litres in the previous month and 5,042,311 in July 2017.
In July 2018 most of the domestically-produced beer, 5,155,439 litres, was consumed locally, while 225,884 litres were exported overseas.

South Korea: Brewers releasing more mini-size beers as more Koreans eat and drink alone

As more Koreans are starting to eat and drink alone, brewers and distillers are rushing to introduce smaller-size products, according to industry officials on August 15.
When releasing its Cass beer in 250 millilitre cans in July, Oriental Brewery (OB) said consumers can more conveniently enjoy a cold beer in summer as the smaller can cools much faster than the larger cans.
According to Korea's largest brewer, consumers said the small-size enables them to drink beer without difficulty. In particular, female consumers who don't drink as much as men prefer the small can to the conventional 500 millilitre can.
OB, which released Hoegaarden Rosee in 250 millilitre bottles in 2016, is considering producing more types of beer in small-size cans and bottles.
"We came up with Cass beer in 250 millilitre cans to satisfy young customers who tend to enjoy a glass of beer alone at home," an OB official said. "We will continue to make innovations with our products to satisfy the needs of various consumers."
HiteJinro also released Hite Extra Cold beer in 250 millilitre cans a few years ago. Lotte Asahi Liquor sells Asahi Super Dry beer in 135 millilitre cans.

Russia & Saudi Arabia: Russia becomes No.1 barley supplier to Saudi Arabia
|
Ukraine lost its longtime dominance of the Saudi Arabian imported barley market to Russia in 2017-18, according to a Aug. 14 Global Agricultural Information Network report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
According to the report, Russia exported 2.11 million tonnes of barley to Saudi Arabia, which accounted for a market share of 28.7%. Ukraine shipped 1.75 million tonnes for a 23.7% market share.
The previous year, Ukraine sent 2.24 million tonnes of barley to Saudi Arabia for a 30% share of the market, while Russia was a distant second at 1.10 million tonnes and a 14.3% market share.
Total Saudi Arabia barley imports for 2017-18 are forecast at about 8 million tonnes, roughly the same as is projected for 2018-19.
Saudi Arabia is perennially among the world’s leading importers of barley. In 2017-18, only China had more imports with 8.2 million tonnes, according to the USDA.
