Brewery news USA, AR: Arkansas breweries increase output by 35% in 2017
Arkansas breweries produced more than 1.2 million gallons of beer in 2017, a better than 35 percent increase over 2016, according to data from the state's Alcoholic Beverage Control Division.

Breweries operating under the state's small-brewery permit made 784,398 gallons of beer or the equivalent of 25,303 barrels in 2017, according to state data, compared with 539,315 gallons or 17,397 barrels in 2016, an increase of 45 percent. A barrel of beer equals 31 gallons. Operations working under microbrewery restaurant permits made 430,381 gallons of beer or 13,883 barrels in 2017, up 25 percent from 345,535 gallons or 11,146 barrels in 2016.

All told, Arkansas breweries made 1,214,779 gallons of beer, or 39,186 barrels, in 2017, up 37 percent from 884,850 gallons or nearly 28,550 barrels from the previous year. The tally comes from a total of 31 active small-brewery permits and 16 microbrewery restaurant permits, according to the documents.

The state's top three breweries kept the same rankings as 2016.

Little Rock-based Lost Forty Brewery, working under a microbrewery restaurant permit, kept the top spot for beer production for the second year running, making 12,075 barrels of beer, nearly a third of the state's total beer produced in 2017. Lost Forty's production was ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse pushes back opening date to September 3
BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse has pushed back its opening date in Livonia to Sept. 3, a one-week setback blamed on weather-related construction delays, Hometownlife.com reported on August 27.

BJ's also had a slight delay getting the final permits to open for business.

Kevin Mayer, executive vice president and chief marketing officer, cited those reasons on August 27 by email in response to questions.

"We are really excited to open our second restaurant in Michigan and introduce the great food and award-winning craft beer to new guests at our new BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse in Livonia," Mayer said.

BJ's, which has 11 of its own beers and ciders, chose Livonia for its second location in Michigan. The first opened last December at Taylor's Southland Center.

With Livonia, BJ's now has 201 locations in 27 states. Its newest restaurant and brewhouse is on Haggerty Road, north of Seven Mile, on the former site of Champp's sports bar and near the AMC Livonia 20 movie theater complex.

Company officials have said BJ's beer will not be brewed in Livonia, but shipped here from one of six breweries in five states. The company is based in Huntington Beach, Calif.

Officials have said Jeremiah Red, an Irish-style ale, and BJ's Brewhouse Blonde ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, AB: Ol’ Beautiful Brewing already open in Calgary
The newest brewery in Calgary’s Inglewood neighbourhood officially opened its doors on August 24th, the Canadian Beer News reported.

Ol’ Beautiful Brewing has been founded by Chris Carroll, Devon Sidwell, and brewmaster Zoei Thibault, and joins several other breweries – including Cold Garden, Revival Brewcade, Dandy Brewing, and High Line – already open in the area.

Ol’ Beautiful launched its beers last year to retail and licensees via contract brewing while its own location was being built out, with core brands including Gatekeeper Belgian Chocolate Stout (7% abv), Siren Song Wheat Ale (5.5% abv), and Pegasus Pale Ale (6.5% abv), all of which are available at the new location along with other beers.

Ol’ Beautiful Brewing is located at 1103 12 St. SE in Calgary.

Brewery news USA, NY: NYC’s beer scene about to explode
NYC’s beer scene is about to explode this fall, with the New York Times reporting that new breweries, bars, and taprooms are all slated to open soon including, most notably, an official brick-and-mortar location for the cult-followed Evil Twin Brewing that has been years in the making.

Evil Twin’s Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergso has been held up with delays for over two years, but his permanent brewery in Ridgewood is finally on the horizon, scheduled to open at last in November. He’s settling down in Ridgewood in a massive space at 1616 George St., between Wyckoff and Cypress avenues, that includes an indoor bar, a beer garden, and a year-round greenhouse. Popular Williamsburg barbecue restaurant Fette Sau will have a permanent food truck in the space.

Under the Evil Twin banner, Jarnit-Bjergso has been brewing IPAs and other beers since 2010, launching in Denmark and hopping around to 10 breweries from around the world to make the product. But he’s always been a gypsy brewer, and though his wife previously owned the Greenpoint bar Tørst, one of the few places to serve Evil Twin on tap, this will be his first permanent brewery.

To make matters more interesting, Evil Twin comes hot on the heels ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AL: Slag Heap Brewing Company to open in Trussville on September 1
The long-anticipated grand opening of Slag Heap Brewing Company has been announced as Sat., Sept. 1, the Trussville Tribune reported.

Those that frequent the downtown Trussville area have watched for over a year as the exterior at 227 Main Street morphed from its previous purpose as a karate dojo into its current aesthetic. Effective Sept. 1, they’ll also get a peek inside its fully renovated interior.

Joe Meadows has been brewing craft beers as a hobby for over 25 years and is officially going pro with the opening of Slag Heap’s taproom in Trussville’s developing entertainment district.

Meadows honed his abilities to create true-to-style beer in nano batches with participation in competitions throughout the country. The feedback from judges helped him gain confidence and expertise.

“When I entered the competitions, I started out with pretty good results, but I also tweaked a few things,” recalled Meadows. “Then I started to win first place here and there and then a People’s Choice Award. After about 36 competitions, I felt pretty good and put together a business plan and started moving forward.”

Slag Heap offers a seasonal rotation of beers, starting with six initial varieties that include an Irish Red Ale, a German Weisenbach, a double IPA, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MO: Tallgrass Brewing Company ceases beer production
Manhattan, Kansas-based Tallgrass Brewing Company announced on August 23 that it was unable to finalize a financing deal that would have allowed production to continue at the multi-million dollar Manhattan plant.

Manhattan news outlet MHK Business first reported the news on August 23.

A company official confirmed the development to 41 Action News on August 24.

The brewer cited changing consumer habits of drinkers consuming craft beer at taprooms instead of buying the beer at a traditional liquor store.

Tallgrass Beer will still be available at the Tallgrass Tap House in Manhattan.

Barley news Germany: Grain production estimated at 35.6 mln tonnes
The German Farmers Association DBV has revised its estimation of 2018 German grain production to 35.6 mln tonnes, 0.4 mln tonnes below the organisation’s last estimate on 1 August.

The DBV’s final harvest report places German grain production 26% below the five year average and the lowest level since 1993. This is in line with estimates from other organisations, with the association of German farm cooperatives (DRV) estimating grain production to fall to 36.3 mln tonnes, as at 8 August. In addition, the first estimate of the 2018 German grain crop (excluding maize) from the German Federal Statistical office has placed production as the lowest since 1994.

Winter wheat production is expected to fall to 18.6 mln tonnes, down 23% from 2017 and 6.7 mln tonnes below the five year average (2013-2017). The DBV’s estimate currently sits 0.6 mln tonnes below both the Federal Statistical office’s first estimate and DRV’s estimate and the final number for winter wheat production remains to be seen.

The organisations estimate for Winter OSR production pegs the crop at 3.3 mln tonnes, 0.2 mln tonnes below official statistics and 36% below the five year average. Winter barley production is estimated at 7.4 mln tonnes, down 18% from ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: Sabeco share value up after dividend announcement
Most recently, Sabeco published the information that it will pay dividend at 35 per cent ratio, including 15 per cent in October and 20 per cent in December this year. At this ratio, each share is valuated at VND3,500, the VietNamNet Bridge reported on August 28.

With 641.3 million shares in circulation, Sabeco will have to pay approximately VND2.22 trillion ($98.2 million) in dividends, including VND1.2 trillion ($53.09 million) for ThaiBev who owns 53.59 per cent of Sabeco’s charter capital and VND805 billion ($35.6 million) for the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) that holds 36 per cent.

After Sabeco published the above information, as of the 3PM transaction session on August 27, its share value increased to VND220,000 apiece, up VND7,000 compared to three days ago.

Despite the increased share valuation, in comparison with the VND320,000 ($14.09) share price that ThaiBev paid for Sabeco’s shares, ThaiBev is currently experiencing losses of VND11.8 trillion ($522.1 million) from the deal.

In late July, Neo Gim Siong Bennett, former deputy general director was appointed as general director and the second legal representative of Sabeco, replacing Nguyen Thanh Nam, who was appointed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) one year ago.

Accordingly, as of August 1, ...More info on site

Brewery news India: United Breweries to launch new non-alcoholic beer very soon
There is a good news for teetotallers. India’s largest beer company United Breweries Limited (UBL) is set to launch a non-alcoholic beer in India very soon, the Deccan Herald reported on August 26.

The Bengaluru-based company is looking at the larger beverage consumption occasions to further drive the growth of its business. UBL is currently working on tapping the opportunity with a portfolio of non-alcoholic beers that deliver on refreshment and taste.

“For most adults the beverage choices for non-alcoholic occasions are limited. Our new offerings will also enable us to enter a much larger retail universe that is today closed on to us,” the company said in its annual report to shareholders.

The company plans to manufacture its non-alcoholic beer at its brewery in Bihar and is scheduled to commence test marketing during the third quarter of the current financial year, the company said.

The main different between alcoholic and non-alcoholic beer is the amount of alcohol they contain. Alcoholic beers have some alcohol in them, while non-alcoholic beers contain a very little alcohol. There are four types of beers – alcohol-free, de-alcoholised, low-alcohol and alcoholic beer. According to experts, alcohol-free (or non-alcoholic) beer contains no more than 0.05% alcohol by volume (ABV), ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: Vietnamese men drink the most in Asia - report
Vietnamese men drink five standard alcoholic drinks on average a day, the highest volume in Asia, according to the Lancet, one of the world's prestigious medical journals, local media reported on August 28.

One standard alcoholic drink, 10 grams of alcohol, is equivalent to a small glass of beer or wine, or a shot of spirit.

According to the Lancet's study, Vietnamese women drink less than one standard alcoholic drink a day, standing in the group of lightest drinkers in the world, online newspaper Zing reported.

According to incomplete statistics of relevant Vietnamese agencies, 10 percent of Vietnam's population abuse alcoholic drinks.

People in Vietnam drank over 4 billion litres in 2017, up 6 percent against 2016, said the Vietnam Beer, Alcohol and Beverage Association.

The country annually spends some 3.4 billion U.S. dollars on beer consumption, with nearly 90 percent of the money going to foreign brewers.

Brewery news Australia: AB InBev’s Carlton & United Breweries to launch its first non-alcoholic beer
AB InBev-owned Carlton & United Breweries (CUB) aims to shake up the Australian beer market with the launch of the first non-alcoholic beer in its 180-year history, FoodBev.com reported on August 28.

Called Carlton Zero, the beverage “is for beer lovers who want more opportunities to enjoy beer responsibly”.

Its release marks a long-term shift in Australia’s drinking habits: low- and mid-strength beers now represent 20% of CUB sales as consumers increasingly moderate their alcohol intake.

Carlton Zero aims to expand the number of occasions people can enjoy beer while encouraging moderate drinking.

While Australian sales of non-alcoholic beers have grown 57% over the last five years, the sales volumes of non-alcoholic beers are modest in the country compared to the US, Canada and Europe.

CUB said that launch of Carlton Zero – which is said to be slightly hoppy with a fruity aroma – is expected to “significantly increase” non-alcoholic beer sales in Australia.

CUB business unit president Peter Filipovic said: “We’ve listened to customers who have told us they want more opportunities to drink responsibly but still want a great-tasting beer. So we are rewriting the rules to give people a non-alcoholic beer that actually tastes like beer.

“Carlton Zero will be promoted to adults ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Heineken to increase prices as from September 17
The new prices of Heineken Malaysia Bhd’s products following the implementation of the sales and service tax (SST) are expected to be lower than the prices during the goods and services tax (GST) regime in 2015, The Star Online reported on August 29.

The price increase for Heineken’s products is due to take effect beginning Sept 17.

While Heineken is not able to absorb the SST, the businesses that retail its products have the option to absorb the 6% service charge.

Speaking at the group’s first-half financial year results briefing on August 28, Heineken Malaysia finance director Szilard Voros expects consumer sentiment to be positive ahead. “We do not foresee that big of an impact from the SST, but this will open up the price gap of contraband beers.

“This is something we need to be careful about. We will need to see if consumer sentiment will change after the implementation of the SST or Budget 2019.

"However, we still believe it will be high, as compared to the previous periods,” said Voros.

Heineken Malaysia has declared an interim dividend of 40 sen per share for FY18, payable on Oct 25 this year.
