Brewery news Canada, ON: Gateway City Brewing preparing to open in North Bay
There’s always room for another good brew.

That’s the attitude Gateway City Brewing has as a four-person team prepares to open North Bay’s newest craft brewery, The North Bay Nugget reported on August 29.

“There’s definitely room,” John “Sully” Sullivan said on August 28 as he and partners Mike Perreault, Jeff Hodge and brewmaster John Palko work on getting the suds flowing hopefully before the end of the year.

“It’s a growing industry,” Sullivan says. “As of last year, the Ontario Craft Brewers Association said craft beer, production wise, accounts for only six per cent of the market.

“There is a lot of room to grow.”

He says all craft breweries offer something different, and have received advice and help from other craft brewers.

The brewery is still in the construction phase, preparing their site at 600 Gormanville Rd. to begin production. Sullivan expects the facility will be completed in mid to late September, when they will begin the licensing phase.

But he admits they still have a way to go. Sullivan was unable to say how many different brews they will serve – they are aiming for licences to sell, serve and sample on site – or what quantities they hope to produce.

“It all depends on ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ME: Side By Each Brewing Co. planning winter opening in Auburn
Brewers Ben Low and Matt Johannes announced on August 30 that they plan to open Side By Each Brewing Co. at 1110 Minot Avenue in Auburn this winter. They plan to offer an eclectic, frequently changing menu of 12 or more beers, in styles to include IPAs, sours, Belgian and British style ales, German lagers and wheat beers, barrel-aged specialties, and new creations, Brewbound.com reported.

“We like drinking and brewing just about any kind of beer, if it’s made well,” Johannes said. “So the consistent theme of our lineup will be quality, not style. We’ll never put a beer on tap if we’re not proud of it.”

Side by Each will also operate as a café, serving a full range of coffee and espresso drinks with coffee and other ingredients, as well as equipment, supplied by Portland’s Coffee By Design.

“The beer and coffee businesses dovetail perfectly,” Low said. “We’re already going to have a great, casual, welcoming space for enjoying our beer, so why not add another locally crafted drink offering, especially one that’s not well represented here? Coffeehouses and pubs are both community spaces for friends, families, and all kinds of people to gather, and that’s what we want Side By ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Big Top Brewing Company launches downtown Pensacola location
The only brewery/restaurant combination in downtown Pensacola is now open for business after the Sarasota-based Big Top Brewing Company opened its doors to the public on August 27, the Pensacola News Journal reported.

Popular in Sarasota for its craft beer ingenuity, Big Top occupies the former Taco Mez location at 21 W Romano Street. On the main floor is a bar with 24 beers on tap, table seating, big screen TVs on each wall and a projector screen adjacent to the entrance. Brewing tanks in the back share a room with a shuffleboard and air hockey table.

The original Big Top location is in Sarasota, but the new venture in Pensacola is the first to serve food. Big Top is known for its outside-of-the-box beer flavors like Chocolate Peanut Butter, Peanut Butter and Jelly and Honey Jalapeño, all of which will be brewed in-house later in August once the company lands a brewer. For now, they're serving from kegs shipped from Sarasota.

Longtime local chef Dano Dunn is at the helm in Big Top's kitchen, and he's taking pride in developing unique menu items to mirror the brewery's unique beer flavors.

"We've got a killer Brew Pub Brisket Blend Burger; it's delicious," Dunn ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Sonder Brewing aiming at October opening in Warren County
When Sonder Brewing opens this October in Warren County, its founders promise visitors will find more than just good craft beer on tap, WCPO reported on August 28.

The brewery will also offer a fenced-in lawn with an over-sized beer garden that is adjacent to bocce ball courts, cornhole, volleyball and fire pit areas on 6.5 acres of land at 8584 Duke Blvd. in Mason, near Kings Island.

"It's been exciting, that's for sure," said Justin Neff, one of Sonder's three co-founders. "It's been really cool to watch. We've all dreamed of owning our own business or brewery for years, and it's fun to see those various dreams come to fruition."

Neff, along with partners Daniel Schmerr and Jennifer Meissner, announced plans to build Sonder’s 16,000-square-foot indoor brewery and taproom and its outdoor facilities from the ground up in March 2017.

Crews are currently putting the final touches on Sonder. Once that work is complete, head brewer Luke Shropshire and fellow co-founder Chase Legler, a former lead brewer at New Glarus Brewing in Wisconsin, will start brewing Sonder's initial lineup of craft beers.

Shropshire began his brewing career at Mount Carmel Brewing. He left Streetside Brewing in July to start his current role.

Brewery news USA, TX: Lake Austin Ales to debut in Austin during the week of September 4
A new Austin craft brewery is bringing something different to the burgeoning local scene. Lake Austin Ales, a company specializing in Juicy IPAs, will debut its two flagship beers during a week of festivities starting September 4, CultureMap Austin reported.

Founder and CEO Zack Fuentes tells CultureMap that the brewery will set itself apart by only producing beers in what was formerly known as the New England IPA style. Now known as Juicy or Hazy, after official recognition from trade organization the Brewers Association, the approachable style is distinguished by tropical fruit aromas and less bitterness than traditional American IPAs.

Although it has been increasing in popularity over the years, the style is less commonly made in Austin. The few local examples include Pinthouse Pizza’s popular Electric Jellyfish and Hops & Grain’s Haze County double IPA.

To help with the operation, Fuentes drafted partner Grady Reynolds of Cedar Park’s Thousand Oaks Brewing and head brewer Kris Gray. Gray brings a high level of expertise to the project from his previous stints as head brewer at Cedar Park's Whitestone Brewery and brewing supervisor at Escondido, California’s lauded Stone Brewing.

Unlike most Austin operations, Fuentes has decided to focus on manufacturing rather than opening a taproom. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MT: Yellowstone Valley Brewing to reopen in Billings this fall
Yellowstone Valley Brewing is set to reopen in the fall in downtown Billings with a canning line, a distillery and live music all in store for the future, KTVH reported on August 30.

The brewery and its distilling operations were purchased in July by Mike Mathew and Kay Foster. They closed the business to do $70,000 in renovations. Their mission is to reopen the brewery with a new feel but the same ‘Garage Pub’ vibe.

“We are taking an existing brewery and remodeling it. It’s going to enable us to brew more beer and can that beer,” said Mathew.

Another big draw to Yellowstone Valley is the music, something General Manager Sean Lynch said will only continue to get bigger.

“I would say this is the main place that local bands can come in, cut their teeth a little bit, get in front of some crowds, feel pretty good about it before moving up to larger venues,” said Lynch.

Lynch is also the owner of the Pub Station a few blocks away and said bands have already inquired about when they can play at the updated venue. He also said live music is an aspect of the brewery that many people wanted to stay.

Brewery news Canada, NS: Horton Ridge Malt and Grain brewing beer and producing malt in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley
Alan Stewart is a sixth-generation farmer in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley. He had been farming for over 30 years when he began to look for a new challenge, CTV News reported on August 28.

“When I did a little more digging, I realized beer wasn’t made directly from grain, there was this missing step, an intermediary step called malting,” says Alan. “Until some idiot opened a malt house, that gap would be there, so I decided to be that idiot to open a malt house.”

Alan’s brainchild, Horton Ridge Malt and Grain, is a craft brewery and the first, and only, malt house in Atlantic Canada.

For more than a year, Alan and his son Connor have been welcoming visitors to their Hortonville, N.S. business.

“I’d say about 95 per cent of people who come in here don’t really know what malt is,” says Connor Stewart. “They know what barley is, but they don’t know that it needs to go through the malting process. So I’d say we’re educating people quite a bit on what it takes to get sugar out of the grain and how that happens and how that ends up making beer.”

There are three steps to the malting process: steeping, germination, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Cellarmaker Brewing Company to open second location in San Francisco
Rumors have long circulated that Cellarmaker Brewing Company has been interested in opening a second taproom in San Francisco, but it wasn't until the closure of Old Bus Tavern, a Bernal Heights neighborhood brewpub, that a viable option presented itself. Now, after three months spent negotiating and planning, cofounder Connor Casey says, Cellarmaker is preparing to open a new location in early November — with a food menu, too, SFGate reported on August 29.

"We have always been willing to listen to a pitch on a potential second location but realistically everything we were offered didn't feel sustainable because of price, location or both," Casey says, adding that the company wasn't actually actively looking for a new lease. "It's hard to find the right combination, (but) we feel that this location has a lot going for it."

The popular brewery long ago outgrew its modest, industrial taproom on Howard Street in the SoMa District of San Francisco. But the company, founded in 2013 by Casey, Tim Sciascia and Kelly Caveney, nevertheless continued to operate out of the tiny space while their fan base burgeoned.

It was imperative to find "a relatively turnkey situation," says Casey, both because working with the city's planning department ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IA: The Gezellig Brewing Company coming to Des Moines Area Community College Newton Campus
The Gezellig Brewing Company will be leasing space at Legacy Plaza on the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Newton Campus to start their first craft-beer and craft-soda brewing operation, KNIA / KRLS Radio reported on August 28.

Betsy Duffy and Mindi VandenBosch, both of Pella, are the owners and operators of the new start-up company. The operation will occupy space in Building 17 of the former Maytag headquarters that once served as a brewing production facility in 2009.

Duffy explains that, the word “Gezellig” is a Dutch word that has no direct translation in English; however it is an adjective that means “cozy, nice, inviting and comfortable.” Duffy said their tagline is, “It’s like a liquid hug.” Duffy said the installation of the brewing equipment is expected to begin the week of September 10 and that they hope to begin brewing shortly after that. No beer can be sold until they receive their brewers’ license from the Federal Government.

Once production is up and running full-scale, the Gezellig Brewing Company will open a family-friendly tasting room where patrons can sample the craft beers and craft sodas. The location of the future tasting room is in the basement of the Innovation Center of ...More info on site

Whisky news China: Young Chinese consumers increase spending on whiskey
Demand from the increasingly urbanized and high-income population, evolving tastes and consumption upgrade is boosting spending on whiskey among young Chinese consumers, the China Economic Net reported on August 30.

Buoyed by the growth, several high-end foreign whiskey retailers are putting more efforts to promote online shopping and sales at restaurants and bars, they said.

Single malt whiskey, made from malted barley and distilled for more than three years from a single distillery, saw the fastest growth in the whiskey segment. The category, which is characterized by distinguished original flavors of different whiskey producing areas, usually comes with expensive price tags.

Total sales of single malt whiskey in China was valued at 45.1 million pounds ($57.9 million) by the end of June last year, up 36 percent year-on-year from 2016, according to data from London-based Diageo Plc.

Gao Shengtian, general manager of French wine and spirits company Pernod Ricard in China, earlier said the company is planning to offer more promotions through social media platforms to boost online sales.

Last year, Pernod Ricard accounted for 31.5 percent market share in China. It was followed by Diageo Plc, which took 15.9 percent, and Suntory Holdings Ltd, Brown-Forman Corp, and Edrington Group, respectively, according to market researcher ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Acquisitions of craft breweries by multinationals could become a wider industry trend - research
New research into the UK’s brewing industry suggests that the spate of recent acquisitions of small craft breweries by multinationals could become a wider industry trend, The Morning Advertiser reported on August 29. Over the past five years, the number of small UK breweries has risen by 64%, creating an overcrowded marketplace. This rise has been in part due to tax breaks such as Small Breweries' Relief (introduced in 2002), but also due to the popularity of craft beer produced by independent breweries.

The research, provided by financial intelligence provider Plimsoll Publishing, suggests that many of these breweries are trying to compete with rising costs, falling margins and a lack of investment, and hence further buyouts could be on the cards.

David Pattison, senior analyst at financial intelligence provider Plimsoll Publishing, said: “The arrival of such a large number of small companies means the brewing industry has become highly fragmented; 70% companies are run with less than £500,000 of investment."

Pattison continued: “Costs are rising faster than sales and for the first time in nine years, margins have fallen below 4%. This lack of investment means that some companies will struggle to grow, even ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: Heineken hits back at counterfeit products claims
Dutch beer giant Heineken has hit back at claims that counterfeit versions of its products are being sold in South Africa, IPPro The Internet reported on August 30.

In a statement, Heineken said that a recent viral video showing “highly illegal criminal behaviour” is an old video first shared in China in 2016 and a “deliberate act to damage the Heineken brand”.

The video shows factory workers packaging Heineken branded bottles in a warehouse filled with hundreds of stacks of fake Heineken boxes.

Heineken consumers took to Twitter to share the video and photos comparing two Heineken bottles with different labels.

But Heineken argued that due to high demand, it was forced to import extra 650ml products, which lead to a discrepancy between differing back labels on products.

Heineken says that it is not aware of any counterfeit products being sold in South Africa and reassures customers that its products sold “in compliance with global best practices”.
