New Zealand: Big muscling into craft beer sector
|
Craft brewers are usually perceived as smaller independent operators but the big players in New Zealand - Lion and DB - are taking over more of them and using their marketing muscle to lift sales, Stuff.co.nz reported on September 19.
They may not fit comfortably into the established narrative of what makes a craft beer, but the biggest contribution to craft beer value and volume growth over the past three years has come from craft brews owned by the major corporates.
It was evident at the recent Brewers Guild Awards where three new champion categories were created to avoid the awards being swamped by the two biggies.
Brewers Guild Awards chief executive Sabrina Kunz said there had been 120 different brewers and the new categories would help continue to reflect the wider industry.
At the Brewers Guild Awards in Nelson, Lion took the Champion Large NZ Brewery, ParrotDog took the Champion Award, and Fork took the Champion Small award.
One of the fastest growing craft beers over the past three years has been Mac's, owned by Lion for about 20 years.
By 2014 Mac's was declining about 12 per cent a year while the craft beer market was growing at 15 per cent, according to

UK: AB InBev will launch its Michelob Ultra in the UK
|
Brewing giant AB InBev will launch its Michelob Ultra premium light beer into the UK in a bid to replicate the brand’s US success, the Morning Advertiser reported on September 14.
The brand is currently the fastest-growing beer in the US in both value and volume terms, success that AB InBev hopes to repeat in the UK.
Research suggests Brits are seeking lower-strength beers – those with an ABV of between 0.5% and 3.5% – and bought 61 mln pints of low-alcohol beer in the past 12 months, up 34% for the same period last year, the brewer said.
“The UK launch responds directly to the trend for leading an active lifestyle and demand for reduced-calorie and lower-alcohol options,” said AB InBev.
Michelob Ultra is brewed to 3.5% ABV, has 79 calories per 335ml can and will be rolled out nationwide across the UK off-trade this October, with a bottle format due to appear in the on-trade from spring 2019.
A national multimedia advertising campaign, running across print, digital and out-of-home media, will support the launch and focus on the beer’s light qualities as well as its “functional benefits”.
Following success with its Bud Light relaunch last year, AB InBev will pump resources into sampling

Cuba: Microbrewery starts brewing tests in central province of Trinidad
|
The factory-tavern of the Austrian beer Salm began production tests in the central Cuban province of Trinidad on September 14, with the production of three types of beers (light, medium and dark) and malt, the Prensa Latina reported.
Reiner Rendon, delegate of the Ministry of Tourism in the territory, told Prensa Latina that the plant is part of the Santa Ana Complex, administered by Palmares.
He said that the objective of the microbrewery was to diversify the tourist offers and increase the foreign currency income of the entity.
The factory will employ about 40 workers and has the capacity to produce 200,000 litres a year of the Salm brand, a company founded in 1924.
Salm marketed more than 80 plants in about 40 countries from 1994 to 2012.
At the moment there are two other mini-breweries in Cuba: in Havana and Santiago de Cuba.

Japan: Brewers suspend production in Hokkaido due to power failures following earthquake
|
Beer production at breweries in Hokkaido was halted due to major power failures following a 6.7 magnitude earthquake that jolted through the northern part of Japan last week, The Drinks Business reported on September 14.
Affected breweries included Sapporo Breweries Ltd’s Hokkaido factory in Eniwa, whose beers include the popular ‘Black Label’, and Kirin Brewery’s factory in Chistose, as well as Asahi Breweries Ltd’s factory in Sapporo, according to The Yomiuri Shimbun.
Hokkaido is also home to a few wineries such as Domaine Takahiko, and the country’s famous Grace Winery also has a wine operation in the region. But to what extent the local wineries are affected is not known at the moment.
Automobile manufactures including Toyota Motor Hokkaido Inc. and Aisin Hokkaido Co have also suspended production after the quake.
The deadly earthquake that struck Hokkaido on 6 September has already killed 41 people, injuring close to 700 people, according to the Japan Times.

Lebanon: Craft brewers introducing new tastes to consumers in Lebanon
|
After being dormant for thousands of years, beer culture is returning to Lebanon. Lebanese brewers, pursuing their passion of carving out a space for the ancient drink in their homeland, have overcome the lack of traditional ingredients, including hops and malt, by incorporating locally grown fruits and spices. They are also embracing an environmentally friendly ethos in combating a deficiency in such basic materials as glass bottles, Al-Monitor reported on September 17.
Lebanon’s new take on an old drink was on display at the Beirut International Beer Event, BIBE 2018, held Sept. 13-16 at an open-air hippodrome near the trendy Badaro neighborhood in the nation’s capital. The young festival, in its second iteration this year, brought together beer lovers and beer makers from around the world. It also showcased some of the best craft breweries and microbreweries Lebanon has to offer.
Saying that beer has a long history in Lebanon and the Middle East would be a gross understatement. Archaeologists recently discovered the remains of a 13,000-year-old brewery belonging to the nomadic Natufian people, who lived in the high mountains of Lebanon and the Anti-Lebanon. The site is today in northern Israel.
Despite such auspicious origins, beer experienced a 10,000-year “slump” in

Tanzania: Manufacturers of beer, soda and cigarettes protest e-tax stamp
|
The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has moved to implement the electronic tax stamp (ETS) on locally manufactured and imported goods even as local manufacturers protest the passing of the project costs to them, The East African reported on September 15.
Last year, the government announced a tender award to a Swiss firm SICPA to install and support ETS management system.
Manufacturers said at a joint meeting with the government that they were not opposed to the stamps but bearing the cost of running the system would add to the cost of doing business.
The ETS application took effect this month.
Manufacturers of beer, soda and cigarettes said that the tender was not awarded competitively and that the terms inappropriately required them to pay for the installation of the stamp machines.
TRA Commissioner General Charles Kichere said the ETS was meant to safeguard government revenue by providing accurate production of data on real time.
Mr Kichere further noted that through application of ETS, the government would determine in advance, the amount of duty to be paid and provided by TRA.
The tax system will enable the government to track goods right from the factories, border entry points, warehouses to the final destination.
“Manufacturers and importers covered by current non-electronic

Canada: Barley use up 1% in 2017/18
|
For 2017-18, Canada’s total domestic barley use increased by 1% to 5.943 mln tonnes with slightly higher feed use and a decline in industrial use, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in its September report.
Total exports increased by 24% or to a 10-year high of 2.883 mln tonnes due to the steady total supply, strong exports to China and lower world barley supplies.
Barley carryout stocks decreased by 41% to 1.3 mln tonnes and remain below the previous three and five-year averages.
The Lethbridge In-store feed barley price increased by nearly 35% due to the tight total barley supplies, strong export movement and the decline in the availability of other domestic feed grain substitutes.
For 2018-19, the nation’s barley-seeded area is forecast to rebound from last year’s record low to 2.628 mln ha.
Production is forecast to increase to 8.0 mln tonnes due to the higher area harvested despite a below average total yield.
With sharply lower carry-in stocks, total supply is forecast to decrease to 9.3 mln tonnes.
Total domestic use is forecast to increase to 6.023 mln tonnes due to higher industrial use.
Exports are forecast to fall by 17% to 2.4 mln tonnes due to lower total supplies.

Australia: Barley crops hit hardest by consecutive frosts in Western Australia
|
Consecutive frosts over the weekend are thought to have wiped at least 500,000 tonnes and possibly up to one million tonnes off what had been a bumper grain crop in Western Australia, The Australian Financial Review reported on September 16.
Barley crops were the hardest hit as temperatures plunged to well below zero across the state's wheat belt, where farmers were looking forward to a combination of high yields and high prices.
The south-eastern wheat belt, a big barley-growing area, was the worst affected, with growers there expected to start slashing ruined crops for hay. The one consolation for them is that hay is attracting inflated prices and in high demand to help to ease some of the livestock feed shortages in drought-affected eastern states.
Grain Industry Association of WA (GIWA) forecaster Michael Lamond said the barley losses would become clearer over the next few days, but would add up to at least 500,000 tonnes and possibly double that, with an already five-year-low canola crop also hard hit.
Under the worst-case scenario, the unexpected frost has wiped about $400 million off the on-farm value of the crop.
"It is extremely disappointing because, on the back of a perfect season in some areas and great prices,

Ukraine: Barley shipments at the moment far behind last season’s
|
Although exports have been on the rise since the start of MY 2018/19, this season’s barley shipments to foreign markets are far behind last year, UkrAgroConsult reported on September 17. So, Ukraine exported 1.36 mln tonnes of barley in July-August 2018/19, or 62.7% less than in the same period last season (almost 2 mln tonnes).
The nation exported 770.5 thousand tonnes of barley in August 2018/19. This is 30.1% more than in the previous month, but 34.7% less than in August 2017/18.
As before, the top importers of Ukrainian barley in the new season are Saudi Arabia and China. These two countries absorbed a combined almost 79% of total barley exports from Ukraine at the time.
At the same time, during the first two months of the current season, Saudi Arabia already imported almost half as much barley as for the whole of MY 2017/18.
