USA: Total beer volume down 1.1% in 2017
|
Total beer volume in the US dropped 1.1% last year to 2.8 billion 2.25-gallon cases, the Beverage Information Group's 2018 Beer Handbook reported. That amounts to a fifth consecutive decline in total U.S. beer consumption.
The biggest losers last year were light beer, with volumes dropping 3.1% in 2017; popular beer, falling 2.5% last year; super-premium and premium beers, down by 3.7%; and malt liquor, sliding by 4.3%, the handbook said.
Craft beer showed the largest jump, growing 4.9% last year to 310 million cases, the handbook noted. Local and regional craft beers have saturated the market, and consumers are trying various brands instead of sticking with a favorite. Imported beers grew by 3.5%, with Mexican imports particularly strong. Flavored malt beverages nudged up 1.3% last year, although growth in that segment has fallen off lately.
These volume declines aren't that surprising given how big beer companies have been performing in the past few years. Even industry giants AB InBev and Molson Coors have seen their U.S. sales drop in recent quarters.

Canada: Hardly any barley still in the fields will make malting quality - experts
|
The long, wet harvest of 2018 has probably spelled the end for most hopes that barley still in fields will meet malting specifications, the Manitoba Co-operator reported on October 11.
“I really suspect that anything left in the field now, any barley now, will not be malting quality,” said Jeff Nielsen, a farmer near Olds, Alta., and director with the Alberta Barley Commission.
Nielsen said he managed to get his barley off during a brief harvest window in early September, as many others did. However, he said on October 10, he had not been able to get into fields since Sept. 10.
Cameron Goff, a farmer near Hanley, Sask., and a director on the Saskatchewan Barley Development Commission, agrees chances are small that any barley left in fields will be good for anything but feed.
However, he said, he still holds out hope that some of the late-seeded barley still standing will be able to meet malting quality specs, provided it wasn’t hit too badly by frost.
Like Nielsen, Goff said he managed to get all of his barley taken off before the heavy precipitation hit.

USA: Craft Brew Alliance acquires three US beer firms
|
Craft Brew Alliance (CBA) has acquired three US beer firms: North Carolina’s Appalachian Mountain Brewery (AMB), Massachusetts’ Cisco Brewers, and Florida’s Wynwood Brewing Co, FoodBev.com reported on October 11.
In 2015 CBA launched its craft beer partner strategy and has since collaborated with each of the brands to bolster its portfolio “with strong local brands and breweries in key markets”.
As CBA partners, AMB, Cisco Brewers, and Wynwood Brewing Co have each grown volume and share in their respective markets, and with the latest agreements, CBA aims to significantly invest to unlock their full potential.
CBA said it plans to increase marketing spend and resources to fuel each brand’s growth and help drive continued innovation.

USA, CA: Russian River Brewing Company launches new production facility in Sonoma County
|
Nearly 30 months after first announcing plans to build a new production facility in Sonoma County, Russian River Brewing Company will open its nearly $50 million, 85,000 sq. ft. brewery, taproom and restaurant on Thursday, October 11, Brewbound reported.
The opening comes a year after wildfires ravaged Sonoma County, killing 44 people, and displacing thousands of residents.
“Our community has definitely changed,” Russian River co-founder Natalie Cilurzo told Brewbound. “I think this is sort of our new normal. But it’s still really beautiful here and hopefully our new brewery will help drive tourism back to a whole new level and bring even more people back to the community.”
The power of the beloved Pliny brand just might bring the tourists back. Earlier this year, the annual February release of Pliny the Younger — the boozier brother of Russian River’s flagship offering, Pliny the Elder — generated $3.36 million in revenue from tourists visiting Sonoma County as visitors traveled from 40 states and 17 different countries to get a taste of the triple IPA, according to the Sonoma County Economic Development Board.

|
San Diego’s independent craft brewing industry continues to have a major economic impact on the region. At the 2018 San Diego Craft Beer Economic Impact Summit, held on Wednesday, Oct. 10, the California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) Office of Business Research & Analysis, in collaboration with the San Diego Brewers Guild (SDBG), shared preliminary findings showing significant revenue growth for independent brewers in America’s Finest City. San Diego County craft brewers produced an economic impact of about $1.1 billion in output and generated about $802 million in revenue for 2017, westcoastersd.com reported.
SDBG, a nonprofit organization supporting San Diego’s community of more than 130 independent brewers, plays a critical role in promoting the county’s diverse craft brewing community through events and education. The organization joined forces with the CSUSM Office of Business Research & Analysis to conduct research on the region’s independent craft brewing industry and its economic contributions. Led by Ed Ashley, the Director of Business Development in the CSUSM College of Business Administration, the university student research group worked to apply classroom knowledge and research methods for developing an annual San Diego Craft Beer Economic Impact Report and releasing updated 2017 fiscal numbers.

Canada, NS: Upstreet Craft Brewing opens its brewery in Dartmouth
|
Charlottetown’s Upstreet Craft Brewing has announced that its spin-off brewery and restaurant in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia is now open, Canadian Beer News reported on October 11.
Upstreet BBQ Brewhouse opened at 11:00 AM on October 11, and is offering versions of several core Upstreet brands brewed on-site, along with rotating one-off and seasonal beers. Also on tap is Major Tom Sour (5.0% abv), a new dry-hopped sour that is debuting simultaneously at both the Dartmouth and Charlottetown locations.
The food program is being overseen by Chef Bill Pratt and his team from Chef Inspired Group of Restaurants, and features authentic Southern BBQ items including rib, brisket, pulled pork, and smoked jackfruit as a vegetarian/vegan option.
In addition to the bar and restaurant, the venue also includes a retail shop selling cans, bottles, growlers and crowlers to go, as well as a selection of branded merchandise.
Upstreet BBQ Brewhouse is located at 612 Windmill Road, an address that has two decades of brewing history behind it. Opened in 1998 as Maritime Beer Company, the facility was taken over by Sleeman Breweries in 2000, and closed in 2013. It was then reopened in 2016 as DownEast Beer Factory, a short-lived operation that shut down last autumn.

USA, OH: Sonder Brewing to celebrate grand opening on October 27
|
A Greater Cincinnati brewery opening this month is taking full advantage of its 6.5 acres of land, bringing outdoor activities and games to its campus, the Cincinnati Business Courier reported on October 10.
Sonder Brewing at 8584 Duke Blvd. in Mason is celebrating its grand opening on Oct. 27. The brewery wants to be a place people can go and hang out even if they don't like beer.
Its 6.5-acre campus will lend itself to that. It will have the typical brewery things – taproom, patio and a kitchen serving bar fare – but it will also include amenities like bocce ball courts, cornhole sets, a wiffle ball diamond and a kickball field. Partner Justin Neff describes it as pretty much a full recreation center.
"While our beer will be amazing, it will be a space you want to hang out," he said.
The 3,000-square-foot outdoor patio will include a projection screen to show sporting events and family-friendly movies. Future plans include a rooftop deck with a direct line of sight to the Kings Island fireworks.

USA, LA: Miel Brewery and Taproom to open its doors in New Orleans on October 13
|
As the modern New Orleans beer scene has developed, new microbreweries have emerged to fill different niches. The latest addition, Miel Brewery and Taproom, is aiming to be a bit different on each visit, The Advocate reports.
Miel is slated to open Saturday, Oct. 13, in a little industrial corner of the Irish Channel, near the riverfront.
It is a taproom-only brewery, at least to begin, meaning Miel will not distribute its beer outside its facility. You have to get it at the source.
“That gives us a lot of flexibility,” said Alex Peyroux, Miel’s brewer, who co-founded the business with Janice Montoya. “We’re constantly making different beers in different styles, for different seasons.”
This is an approach now in play at three other tiny local breweries – Courtyard Brewery, nearby in the Lower Garden District, Brieux Carre Brewing in Faubourg Marigny and Parleaux Beer Lab in the Bywater.
It differs from the more common model of production breweries, which primarily supply their beer to other venues, and typically serve some through their own taprooms. At Miel, the taproom is everything.

USA, NJ: Ghost Hawk Brewing Company on track for late-November opening in Clifton
|
With an electric drill in hand, Ghost Hawk Brewing Company's brewmaster Chris Sheehan assembled one of the draft beer serving tanks on October 9. With much still to be done, the brewery remains on track for a late-November opening, Sheehan said in an interview to NorthJersey.com.
Sheehan worked feverishly alongside Ghost Hawk's Vice President Steve Bauer to get the River Road brewery ready.
A realistic opening date, Sheehan said, is in six weeks.
"We are rounding third right now," Bauer said.
There are still many moving parts in the works. The brewing equipment's manufacturer was expected to send a team from Connecticut to Clifton on October 12 to begin the installation of piping. On Monday, October 15, the water filtration system will be completed.
That leaves the electrical system to be upgraded.
Sheehan has been through the process before, he said. Clifton's Ghost Hawk is the 11th brewery to employ him and his fourth start-up.
Sheehan's plan is to feature four "flagship" beers: a lager, a wheat beer, an India pale ale, or IPA, and a stout, his specialty. Most of his Great American Beer Festival medals involved stouts.
Throughout the year, the brewery will add special batches of beer, Bauer said.

USA, OK: Kochendorfer Brewing Company looking to become Duncan’s first ever brewery
|
The Kochendorfer Brewing Company in Duncan is looking to become the areas first ever brewing company, KFDX reported on October 11.
Lenny Cripps knew for many years he wanted to open a brewery, but it wasn’t until about six years ago that his business partner Christopher Kochendorfer decided they should make it happen.
The year was 2012. Kochendorfer was at a bar with his friend and they started talking about making their own beer.
After many failed attempts, Kochendorfer was introduced to a man who had been brewing his own beer for more than 20 years, Lenny Cripps.
"My wife's family thankfully lives right next door to Lenny on this land," Kochendorfer said. "They introduced me to Lenny. I got to see this magnificent place and fell in love with it."
Owning his own brewing company has been a long time dream for Cripps.
"Every place that I brewed previously in all of the brewpubs, I was brewing somebody else's recipe," Cripps said. "Not my beer. Brewing somebody else's. So, I wanted to put mine out there and see what would happen."
Cripps said a lot goes into making beer.

USA, OH: Four String Brewing Co. shuts down
|
One of Columbus’ best known craft breweries has shut down, The Columbus Dispatch reported on October 10.
Four String Brewing Co., which has a tap room on Sixth Avenue in the Grandview area and a production brewery on Hague Avenue in the Hilltop, closed overnight.
Owners Dan Cochran and Larry Horowitz have not responded to multiple attempts to contact them, but sources close to the owners confirm that the brewery has shut down. The Hague Avenue facility was locked on October 10 and no one answered the door there, or has answered the phone.
It is unclear if the brewery has gone out of business, or is temporarily closed. Cheryl Harrison, owner of the website Drink Up Columbus, received an email on October 10 from a Four String employee saying that the brewery had closed. Harrison had scheduled an event at the brewery in November and has now moved that to another central Ohio brewery.

India: Antitrust watchdog raids offices of United Breweries, Carlsberg and AB InBev
|
India’s antitrust watchdog raided the offices of three top beer companies on October 11 as part of an investigation of price-fixing allegations, three sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters.
Search and seizure operations were conducted at dawn by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) at the offices of India’s United Breweries, Denmark’s Carlsberg and the world’s largest brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) in at least two Indian cities, said the three people, including one government source and an industry source.
The regulator has been conducting an antitrust investigation of the three companies for the past year, said a fourth source with direct knowledge of the inquiries.
The CCI was tipped off by one of the three companies after it filed a leniency application with the regulator, revealing details of the alleged price fixing, he added.
The regulator’s leniency program is a type of whistleblower protection offered to cartel members.
The government source said that the raids found email exchanges showing that the companies were fixing prices.
“That is smoking gun evidence,” the source said.
All four sources declined to be named because they have not been authorized to discuss the matter with the media.

|
Sri Lanka's Lion Brewery regrets leaving the Indian beer market to focus on its home market, a senior company official said, noting that many local firms are reluctant to risk venturing overseas and fear foreign competition, EconomyNext reported on October 12.
Suresh Shah, Executive Director of the Lion Brewery (Ceylon) Ltd., said they understood the risks and complexities of the Indian market when they entered, but withdrew to give priority to investments to grow the home market, recovering after the ethnic war.
The Carson Cumberbatch controlled Lion Brewery withdrew from the Indian beer market in May 2011 having ventured into it in partnership with Carlsberg South Asia Pte Limited. It sold its stake to Carlsberg for 2.1 billion rupees.
“We know it is tough to do business in our region,” Shah told a World Bank forum to launch its new report on regional trade in South Asia which highlights the lack of intra-regional trade and investment.
“We understood the complexity of doing business in India. If we wanted the rewards of a very large market we had to face it. You go in knowing the risks and challenges,” Shah said.

Bureaucrats in New Zealand have decided to get into the craft beer game, contributing millions to help the industry develop its own unique “Kiwi” hops flavour, The Guardian reported on October 11.
The ministry of primary industries wants to develop “a super-premium hops” and craft beer in an attempt to emulate New Zealand’s success with wines such as sauvignon blanc and pinot noir.
The ministry is contributing NZ$5.3 mln to the seven-year research and development project in conjunction with a brewery and hops grower, which is contributing NZ$7.95 mln.
The aim of the research is to create new varieties and cross-breeds of hops that will be identifiably “Kiwi” from the first sip, much like Marlborough sauvignon blanc is known for its distinctive gooseberry flavours.
New Zealand has a thriving craft beer scene with about 200 companies in operation. The number has increased by 300% in the last decade. However only a small quantity of hops is grown in New Zealand and access to markets is limited.
A number of niche breweries have been absorbed by corporations, including Dunedin’s Emerson brewery being sold to Australia’s Lion and Wellington’s Tuatara beer being bought by New Zealand’s DB breweries.

Guinness Nigeria’s strategy to cut its spending on creditors in finance expenses to build wealth for shareholders has been achieved. This is the summary of the company’s operating results for the 2018 financial year, thus paying back investors in their good coin of availing the company new money last year that permitted a cut down in balance sheet borrowings, TheCable reported on October 11.
The brewing company cut down its balance sheet debts massively in its 2017/18 financial year and consequently mowed down net finance expenses by 54%. In that move alone, management saved more than N4 billion, thereby changing the uncomfortable position in the preceding year when finance costs consumed 74% of operating profit.
The company also saved a lot of cost by hammering administrative expenses, which it forced down by 28%. Distribution cost also went down during the year but major increases in cost of sales and marketing expenses claimed a good part of the costs saved. Yet cost savings were robust enough and with roughly 14% growth in turnover, Guinness Nigeria has reported a 249% advance in net profit for its financial year ended June 2018.

UK: Scotland’s brewing industry enjoys explosive growth

Scotland's brewing industry has enjoyed "explosive growth" since 2010 as craft beers have become increasingly popular, according to new research.
The Scottish Parliament Information Centre (Spice) found there were 115 breweries across Scotland this year - compared with just 35 eight years ago.
More than four-fifths of businesses in the sector were micro-breweries.
The study also found that 30% of all brewing enterprises were in the Highlands and Edinburgh.
The report said: "Globally, beer consumption has been falling for decades.
"However, this has not dampened the significant brewery start-up rate, responding to consumers choosing to drink more expensive, specialised beers.
"Scotland's craft breweries have flourished over recent years with a plethora of new breweries entering the market."
While just four local authority areas contained breweries in 2010, currently 16 of the 32 separate regions are home to at least one brewing business.
"Both urban and rural areas have benefited from the explosive growth of the sector," the report found.
Breweries had an average turnover of £271,310 in 2018 - lower than the average business turnover of £673,000.
But 10% of breweries had sales levels worth over £1m, while just over half (52%) had turnover levels that were below £100,000.

In an industrial park in Niamey, the capital of Niger, unemployed men rest in the shade from thirst-inducing heat. Warehouses gather dust. But there is a buzz around the country’s only brewery. Steam billows from 50-year-old copper cauldrons, and bottles rattle off the conveyor belt before they are stamped with a label bearing two giraffes and the words: “Bière Niger”, The Economist reported on October 11.
Not many people associate Niger, which is mostly Muslim, with beer. The brewery, Braniger, was founded in 1967, seven years after Niger’s independence from France. Its turbulent history says much about the fragility of Niger’s economy. In the 1990s the regional currency, the CFA franc, was devalued by about half, driving up the cost of the imported raw materials. Instead of raising prices, Bière Niger shrank its bottles by a third.
The brewery, part of Castel Group, a French family firm, survived the crisis but has again lost its fizz.
