Brewery news Canada & USA: Canada drops US-made aluminium-can tariff
Canada's move to drop a 10 percent duty on U.S.-made aluminium cans is good news for Canadian beer makers battling a shortage of tall cans, according to brewing industry executives, Reuters reported on October 18.

The aluminium products excluded from tariffs last week include cans that brewers have been struggling to keep in stock, said Luke Harford, president of trade association Beer Canada. Reuters reported in July that some Canadian breweries were scrambling to find aluminium cans.

"It's very positive for us," said Harford. "The 473 ml tall cans are all purchased from U.S. suppliers and that particular can is one of the fastest-growing cans... particularly amongst small brewers."

Canada announced tariff exemptions on a range a products last week after the domestic industry complained of shortages that could affect production of everything from cars to beer. The rollback underscores the unintended consequences of retaliatory tariffs.

The Canadian tariffs on cans were part of its response to U.S. President Donald Trump's steel and aluminium tariffs. But they hit a product already in short supply after the closure of a Crown Holdings Inc plant in Massachusetts in January.

At least one small brewery, Alberta's GP Brewing Co, was forced to halt production for two weeks in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands CEO Rob Sands to step down
Rob Sands, the CEO of Corona maker Constellation Brands, is stepping down. He will hand over the reins to the company's president and chief operating officer, Bill Newlands, in March, the company said on October 17.

Sands, who spent more than a decade as president and CEO of Constellation Brands, said Newlands "has made a significant impact" on the company since he joined in 2015.

"Bill understands what it takes to succeed in this rapidly evolving market and he's the right person to lead our company going forward," he added.

Once Newlands becomes CEO, Sands will become Constellation Brands' executive chair, replacing his brother Richard Sands. Richard Sands will become executive vice chair.

Constellation Brands, which also owns SVEDKA vodka and Casa Noble tequila, made a number of profitable decision with Sands at the helm.

In 2013, the company acquired Grupo Modelo's US beer business, including Corona and Modelo. Sands also expanded the company's liquor and spirits portfolio, and sold off underperforming international brands. Over the past five years, the company's stock has soared by more than 255%.

Most recently, the company made a huge bet on the cannabis industry.

In August, Constellation Brands spent $4 billion bet to boost its stake in cannabis company Canopy Growth.

Barley news Canada: Unharvested barley acres to dash farmers’ hopes of having their barley accepted as malting
Harvest progress over the past three weeks has been painfully slow in Western Canada. The weather has been abysmal. Snowfall, frost, and rainy wet conditions have made harvest a nightmare. Farmers in all three provinces have been stymied by the inclement weather conditions which in many areas prevented them from entering their fields, CMBTC reported on October 17. The unharvested barley acres, which have been subject to relentless wet conditions, will certainly dash the hopes of many famers of having their barley accepted as malt barley. With the outlook for warmer, dry conditions over the next week, there is always hope that some of the late seeded barley that is still standing could meet malt specifications, however the reality is that most of the unharvested barley will be downgraded into the feed category. The wet conditions certainly reduced the amount of available malt barley that will be offered to the export market. Prior to the rain and snow, it was estimated there would be 3.5 million tonnes of malt barley available for the domestic and export market. Now we will have to wait for the final number when harvest is complete, but there is no doubt that the crop ...More info on site

Barley news Ireland: Seed companies and merchants report massive increase in winter barley area
A massive increase in the area of winter barley planted has been reported by seed companies and merchants in Ireland, Independent.ie reported on October 17.

However, a shortage of seed for oats, particularly for the spring crop, could hit the total area of that crop.

Industry sources estimate that the area of winter barley planted is likely to top 70,000 ha for the first time since 2016, and could reach the 75,000 ha mark.

This represents a 25-30pc jump in the area sown last year. Around 74,000 ha of winter barley were planted for the 2016 harvest, but this fell to 64,000 ha for the 2017 crop, and to 56,000 ha for this year's harvest.

Donal Fitzgerald of Goldcrop attributed the lift in the winter barley acreage to the excellent sowing conditions of late, the poor spring barley harvest this year, the fact that barley is priced the same as wheat, and the better straw returns which the winter barley crop delivers.

"Sowing conditions have been brilliant. The early harvest helped, and we've had really good weather since," he said.

Mr Fitzgerald said lively farmer demand for straw, and the expectation that the market would remain strong, was also influencing planting decisions.

He said that the straw ...More info on site
