Barley news Canada: Malting barley quality very good despite weather challenges
Despite the challenges experienced during the growing season and harvest, the overall quality of Western Canada’s 2018 malting barley crop is very good, CMBTC reported on November 8.

While there has been a wide range of protein reported this year, the average protein content of 2018 crop samples received at the CMBTC has been higher for all three main malting barley varieties (AC Metcalfe, CDC Copeland and AAC Synergy) than the past two years.

The 2018 crop samples of AC Metcalfe, CDC Copeland and AAC Synergy all showed very good germination energy. The also displayed lighter water sensitivity and higher rapid visco analysis (RVA) values than recorded last year. The lighter water sensitivity may simplify steep cycles in process, and high RVA values suggest good storability for 2018 crop.

Brewery news USA, WI: Pabst Brewing Company and MillerCoors going to trial
Pabst Brewing Company and MillerCoors are going to trial, with hipster favorite Pabst contending that MillerCoors wants to put it out of business by ending a longstanding partnership through which it brews Pabst's beers, AP reported on November 11.

The case has high stakes for Pabst, whose lawyers argue that the company's very existence relies on the partnership with Chicago-based MillerCoors, which produces, packages and ships nearly all its products, which include Pabst Blue Ribbon, Old Milwaukee, Natty Boh and Lone Star. MillerCoors, meanwhile, says it's not obligated to continue brewing for Pabst and that Pabst doesn't want to pay enough to justify doing so.

The trial in Milwaukee County Circuit Court begins on November 12 and is scheduled through Nov. 30.

Pabst's attorneys have said in court documents and hearings that MillerCoors LLC is lying about its brewing capacity to break away from Pabst and capture its share of the cheap beer market by disrupting Pabst's ability to compete. At a March hearing in which MillerCoors tried to have the lawsuit dismissed, Pabst attorney Adam Paris said "stunning documents" obtained from MillerCoors show that it went as far as hiring a consultant to "figure out ways to get rid of us." Brewery news USA, CA: San Diego County craft brewers produce more than 1.1 mln barrels of beer last year
San Diego County craft brewers produced more than 1.1 million barrels of beer in 2017, up about 22 percent from 2016 levels, according to an economic impact study conducted by the San Diego Brewers Guild and California State University San Marcos’ (CSUSM) Office of Business Research and Analysis, Brewbound reports.

The total economic impact of the craft brewing industry in San Diego County increased from $870 million in 2016 to more than $1.1 billion last year, according to the study, titled “Economic Impact of Craft Breweries in San Diego County Report.” The study also found that more than 130 San Diego-based breweries generated about $802 million in revenue last year.

More than $806 million of the total economic impact came directly from beer companies in the county that meet the national Brewers Association’s craft brewer definition: small (less than 6 million barrels), independent (less than 25 percent owned by a non-craft brewer), and traditional (a majority of total volume derived from traditional or innovative brewing ingredients).

Much of the industry’s economic impact in the county is derived from breweries in five cities — Carlsbad, Escondido, Oceanside, San Marcos and Vista — along Route 78 within the so-called “78 Corridor,” such as Stone Brewing, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Emerald Republic Brewing Co. in the works in downtown Pensacola
There's a new brewery in the works on the west side of downtown Pensacola that intends to serve you world-class craft beer and teach you exactly how they brewed it, the Pensacola News Journal reported on November 8.

The Emerald Republic Brewing Co. at 1414 W. Government St. is targeting an opening date in the fall of 2019. The brewery won't serve liquor, food or have televisions, but what it will do is take on the personality of its owner, founder and head brewer, Phillip Zayas, a certified cicerone with a decade of experience in the craft beer industry.

A Pensacola resident since 2014, Zayas traveled to California in 2017 to attend the University of California, Davis, where he received his Professional and Master Brewers Certificate.

Zayas said he probably could have gone from homebrewer straight into business, but he wanted to take the time to train properly so he could bring something special to Pensacola.

"This has been a goal of mine for quite a long time, to create something in my own vision," he said. "The No. 1 priority is always going to be on the beer. I, as a brewer, feel the focus needs to be making ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Indeed Brewing of Minneapolis to open brewery in Milwaukee
An out-of-state craft brewery is making its way to Wisconsin. Indeed Brewing of Minneapolis will open a 10-barrel brewery and taproom in Milwaukee's Walker's Point neighborhood in June, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on November 9.

"We plan to put roots down, be local and have some of our story written in Wisconsin," said Tom Whisenand, who co-founded the Minneapolis brewery with Nathan Berndt in 2012.

Indeed Brewing affiliate IBC Real Estate WI LLC purchased the two-story building at 530 S. 2nd St. for $542,500, according to state real estate records posted online on November 9.

The building was sold by Milwaukee Fix Annex LLC, led by developer Juli Kaufmann. Whisenand said they have hired architects Kahler Slater to turn the former sports equipment repair shop into a 10-barrel brewery with a taproom and shuffleboard table.

Indeed, which makes Day Tripper Pale Ale, B-Side Pils Pilsner and a host of other beers, began selling in Milwaukee earlier this year but adding a brewery and taproom presence is a logical part of the company's growth strategy, Whisenand said.

The building will be renovated to reveal a skylight above the taproom. Patrons will walk past the brewhouse to enter the taproom, which will include a 37½-foot bar ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SD: Buffalo Ridge Brewing now alive in Hartford
It’s hard to believe that Buffalo Ridge Brewing was only a pile a dirt just five months ago. Now, this project is alive in Hartford, KDLT News reported on November 10.

“It’s really fun to be able to see how these things can just come from nothing being here but a plan and a dream,” says Hartford Mayor Jeremy Menning.

The plan for the brewery started in February of last year, and the owners broke ground on the property in June. The 4,000 square foot facility is located on north Main Avenue and will brew about 1,500 barrels per year. However, one of the owners never thought he would be in this business.

“The opportunity to partner with someone who really knows the brewing process and knows the scalability of the brewing process. That part of it and once I tasted the beer I was like, ‘Wow this is really, really, really good,” says Co-Owner Damon Sehr.

The other owner, Chris Tuschen, is originally from Hartford and moved to the west cost for about twenty years. But it did not take him long to find his passion.

“Seven and a half years ago, I (kind of) took home brewing as a hobby. We ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Cheat Canyon Brewing Co. announces plans to open in Akron in summer 2019
Cuyahoga Falls may have to change its name to Brewery Falls.

Another craft brewery has announced plans to open in the Akron suburb, meaning the community will be home to at least five breweries next year, the Akron Business Journal reported on November 8.

The latest is Cheat Canyon Brewing Co., which is investing about $1.5 million in its project and hopes to open in the summer of 2019.

Cheat Canyon will feature a 15-barrel production brewery, tasting room and 100-seat full-service restaurant inside the former Bootlegger liquor store at 461 Graham Road.

Tom Nichelson, 44, one of the three founders and a Cuyahoga Falls resident, said he’s excited to join the local craft brewery scene. The city already is home to HiHO, McArthur’s and Missing Mountain, and Ohio Brewing has announced plans to open a brewpub on Front Street.

“As long as we’re all producing good beer, it could make us a destination hub,” he said. “Come down and do the Cuyahoga Falls crawl, so to say. I like the idea that they are popping up more and more.”

The other founders are Craig Koberlein, 40, of Tallmadge, who’s also an engineer, and Bob Milvet, 44, of Morgantown, W.Va., who’s an executive in the health ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, RI: The Smug Brewing Company holds grand opening in Pawtucket
The Smug Brewing Company held its grand opening on Saturday, November 10 at the Carver Street location in Pawtucket, Turn to 10 reported.

Robert DaRosa, the owner of the company said it’s been all hands on deck for the last eight months.

“It’s a very humbling experience that people are walking through your doors for your and what you've created,” said DaRosa.

Prior to the Smug Brewing moving in the Pawtucket location, it was home to “The Bucket Brewery” which has since closed.

“Why not? Beer is great. Beer makes me feel good. I love beer," said DaRosa. "Pawtucket is already a hub for breweries."

DaRosa has personally been perfecting his craft for more than eight years now. His Rhode Island brewed beers will be interchanging based on the seasons although some are signature like the “Driving Miss Hazy” named after his daughter

"I wanted to thank everyone for coming out today it’s been a long journey and a dream come true," said DaRosa.

Brewing Company brews its beers inside of the location. It’s equipped with a bar, several tables and a relaxation area.

Despite other businesses opting to leave Pawtucket recently, DaRosa has the confidence in his Brewery and its addition to the beer scene.

Brewery news USA, IL: Vice District Brewing reopens in Chicago
Vice District Brewing, the newest microbrewery in Chicago’s H-F area, is reopened, The Homewood-Flossmoor Chronicle reported on November 11.

As of Friday, Nov. 9, the code violations that forced its closure have been corrected and the brewery is back up and running.

Brewery owner Curtis Tarver is looking forward to an active clientele at the craft brewery at 18022 Dixie Highway. The village of Homewood gave the business a conditional occupancy permit that allowed Vice District Brewing to officially open Aug. 31. Then on Oct. 26, the village pulled the permit because plumbing and fire suppression code issues were not corrected.

“It was a huge blow to us as we have had two incredibly slow months revenue wise at our Homewood location,” Tarver said. “We're hopeful that traffic will pick up, especially after having to expend so much money within such a short time after opening.” The microbrewery’s primary location is at 1454 S. Michigan Avenue in Chicago.

Homewood Village Manager Jim Marino confirmed Friday that the building had been brought up to code and was cleared to reopen. “I cannot speak to the specifics of the work. I know whatever was asked by the village we had done. My understanding is that it ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Great Waters Brewing Company to close its doors on November 18
When Sean O’Byrne opened Great Waters Brewing Company in 1997, the brewpub scene in Minnesota was “pretty slim.” Now, there are more than 150 craft breweries in the state. But there will be one less after this weekend, when the downtown St. Paul standby closes its doors, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported on November 12.

“We were one of the first breweries around, and now there’s almost one on every corner, like a Starbucks,” O’Byrne said.

Minnesota Wild games, theater at the Ordway and concerts at the newly renovated Palace Theatre have been a boon to the brewery, restaurant and bar in the historic Hamm Building. But it’s not enough, O’Byrne said.

“It’s great for a destination, but everyday, casual customers who want to stop in for a beer – now there’s one in their neighborhood,” he said. And when the theater is dark and the games are away, and “there’s no one out on the streets because it’s so darn cold, you still have to pay the bills on those days.” Those bills include upgrades to 22-year-old restaurant and brewing equipment that O’Byrne wasn’t prepared to make.

Great Waters bore witness to major changes in the Twin Cities craft brewing world.

“At the time ...More info on site

Brewery news The Philippines: San Miguel Food and Beverage completes P34 bln follow-on offering
Amid bearish market conditions, consumer powerhouse San Miguel Food and Beverage Inc. (SMFB) completed a follow-on offering worth P34 billion, widening its public float and allowing its parent conglomerate, San Miguel Corp., to raise fresh funds for expansion, Inquirer.net reported on November 10.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange on November 9, SMFB said 400.94 million of its shares had been sold at P85 a share.

This represents less than half of the maximum offering of 1.02 billion secondary common shares, including oversubscription option, that SMFB was authorized to sell to the public.

“[With] challenging market conditions, the follow-on [offering] was already a success and this will bring their free float near 12 percent,” BDO Capital & Investment Corp. president Eduardo Francisco said in a text message.

BDO Capital is among the lead local underwriters for the offering, along with BPI Capital Corp.

JP Morgan Securities Plc, Morgan Stanley Asia (Singapore) Plc and UBS AG Singapore are the joint global coordinators while Deutsche Bank AG Hong Kong and Goldman Sachs (Singapore Plc) are the joint bookrunners. Standard Chartered Bank is the financial advisor.

Brewery news UK: AB InBev relaunching Bass pale ale in the UK
AB InBev is relaunching Bass pale ale in a bid to “reignite the premium ale category”, the Drinks Retailing News reported on November 12.

The brewer said 35.5cl bottles of the 5.1% abv ale will be available through selected retailers and pubs from December.

Bass is described as “the world’s first pale ale”, and it was first brewed in 1777 by William Bass in Burton on Trent.

AB InBev is now looking to bring the historical brand back to the UK to invigorate the premium ale category. Bass has long been brewed in the UK but much of the volume has been exported internationally as a super-premium ale. It is particularly popular in Japan.

The beer is clear and coppery in colour with a creamy, off-white head. The pale ale is dry, with tasting notes of malt, caramel and light pine hops.

A spokesperson for the brewer said: “Bass is a pale ale pioneer and we can’t wait to reintroduce shoppers to this historic brand, whose name lives on as a hallmark of great-tasting beer. The pale ale category has many good players, but Bass is the only one who can say that it has been on board the Titanic, flew on the Concorde and ...More info on site

Heineken on November 7, 2018, introduced its 500ml bottle and 500ml can onto the Ghanaian beer market, Yen.Com.Gh reported.

The launch took place at Smoke'N Barrel in Labone and saw a huge attendance from people from all walks of life.

The decision by the beer brand which is distributed locally by Guinness Ghana Breweries Ltd. (GGBL) to introduce the new bottle was due to the fact that it was bound to increase and drive more variety on the country’s beer market. Again it was an innovative move to offer beer drinkers a whole new choice in their selection of size and quantity.

Shedding some light on GGBL’s move to introduce the Heineken 500ml onto the market, Carsten Schemmer, the Marketing Manager for Lagers at GGBL said, “Heineken seeks to introduce innovation and variety to the Ghanaian beer market and to deliver premium product experience to Ghanaian beer drinkers.” He added that “the new Heineken 500ml bottle offers consumers a larger pack size with a new and refreshing choice thus presenting consumers with a new choice in their selection of their favourite beer brand.”
