Brewery news USA: Brewers counting on non-alcoholic beers to boost sales
In an effort to attract a growing number of drinkers who are moderating alcohol consumers, several beer companies are looking toward non-alcoholic brews as a way to boost sales and court the 30 percent of U.S. adults who don’t imbibe, Brewbound reported on November 19.

Among major producers, both Heineken and Pabst have recently announced plans to roll out non-alcoholic offerings nationwide in the first quarter of 2019. There’s also an emerging group of startups focused exclusively on crafting alcohol-free libations.

While NA offerings carry less stigma in international markets, widespread acceptance in the U.S has been a challenge. According to Nielsen, the domestic market for “near beer” is tiny: The near beer category has accounted for just 0.3 percent of total off-premise beer sales year-to-date, or about $80 million of a $29 billion market.

Meanwhile, the worldwide market for NA beer is projected to double by 2024, to about $25 billion, according to market research firm Global Market Insights.

Countries such as Germany — the second largest market for NA beer in the world — and China are seeing growth within the sector. Despite an overall beer declines between 2011 and 2016, consumption of non-alcoholic beer in Germany increased 43 percent, according to ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Brick Brewing Co. to invest C$9.6 mln to expand its Kitchener-Waterloo brewery
Waterloo Brewing, the trade name of Brick Brewing Co. Limited (“Brick” or the “Company”), Ontario’s largest Canadian-owned brewery, announced on November 19 an investment of C$9.6 million to expand its brewery in Kitchener-Waterloo.

“This investment in our brewery is such an important event for all of us at Waterloo Brewing,” said George Croft, President and CEO, Waterloo Brewing. “We’ve undergone an enormous amount of change and growth over the last few years, all motivated by a commitment to be the best regional brewer in Ontario. The expansion will include a small batch brewhouse, a new taproom where our friends and neighbours can join us for a pint of finely crafted beer, a larger retail store, an expansion of our warehouse and production facility, and some strategic investment in production equipment to improve capabilities, capacity and operations efficiencies.”

“This investment in our operations will deliver significant returns for the business while at the same time improving both the capabilities and capacities of our production facility. Additionally, the installation of the small batch brewhouse will allow us to leverage the years of brewing experience and expertise to create a unique consumer experience” said Russell Tabata, COO, Waterloo Brewing.

“Since 1984, Waterloo Brewing has been ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Hemlock State Brewing Company hopes to begin brewing next month and open in January
What started as a friendship a few years ago for three homebrewers quickly became a full-fledged business that involved making beer in a Shoreline garage. Now those three friends are upping their game, converting more than 2,000 square feet of commercial space in Mountlake Terrace’s Arbor Village complex into a new production brewery and taphouse, MLT News reported on November 19.

The three hope to begin making beer in their new space next month and open for customers in January.

Hemlock State Brewing Company is the creation of Mark Dunford, Jerret Botch and Michael Ernst. “Seeing this coming in physical form is pretty crazy for us,” said Dunford. “Even just putting the stickers up on the (window) glass was beyond exciting for us.”

The three have collaborated since 2012 and run Hemlock State Brewing out of Botch’s Shoreline garage since 2015; their beer proved so popular that hopes for expansion brewed quickly.

“We ran that location for three years just being open on Saturdays, selling most of what we would make in a week,” Dunford explained. “We started looking at this space (in Mountlake Terrace) in April 2017; we’d been looking to expand probably a year before that.”

Due to having just one fermenter in ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, AB: Sawback Brewing now open to the public in Red Deer
The newest brewery in the Central Alberta city of Red Deer has announced that it is now open to the public, Canadian Beer News reported on November 12.

Sawback Brewing takes its name from the Sawback Mountain Range which is the source of the Red Deer River, the main water supply for the city, and has been launched by a team that includes Derek Bostock, Nathan Prestie, Tom McDonald, Caswell Johnstone, and Denielle Bostock.

The brewery taproom was officially opened last Friday with a debut line-up of beers that included Hazy Blonde Ale (4.6% abv, 16 IBU), American Pale Ale (5.4% abv, 37 IBU), West Coast IPA (6.6% abv, 55 IBU), Mit Hefeweizen (4.6% abv, 12 IBU), India Dark Ale (6.2% abv, 70 IBU), Dry Stout (4.2% abv, 33 IBU), and Passion Fruit Kettle Sour (4.9% abv, 0 IBU).

Sawback Brewing is located at 7023 Johnstone Drive in Red Deer, and is open 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM Tuesday to Thurday, 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM Friday and Saturday, and 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM Sunday.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Full Beard Brewing planning second location in Ottawa
Full Beard Brewing has announced plans to establish a second location in Ottawa, and will soon be launching a crowdfunding initiative to finance the project, Canadian Beer News reported on November 15.

The campaign will be launching soon on the FrontFundr platform, and will be looking for investments from C$750 to C$5000, with a goal to raise C$1.5 million.

As noted on the fundraising page, production at the original Full Beard facility in Timmins is maxed out, and the company has chosen Ottawa’s Barrhaven neighbourhood as a suitable area for a second brewery which will “resemble the atmosphere of the Timmins location” but with three times the production capacity. Initial plans include a tasting room with a 60-80 person capacity, as well as an events space that can accommodate groups of up to 160.

While Barrhaven is situated more than 700 km southeast of Timmins, one of the co-founders and member of the Board of Directors for Full Beard is intending to relocate to Ottawa to manage the new location, and the current brewers will train the Ottawa hires to ensure recipe consistency between the two facilities.

Brewery news USA, NC: Bill’s Brewing Company to quadruple production, eyes statewide distribution
Wilmington’s craft beer industry keeps booming as one of 14 area breweries prepares to quadruple production, eyeing statewide distribution by 2020, the Port City Daily reported on November 18.

Bill’s Brewing Company co-owner Donnie Stone said they will start demolition on a recently purchased building in April — on Cinema Drive, 15 feet from Capt’n Bill’s volleyball courts — that will house production offices, a taproom, and a new 20-barrel brewhouse.

He expects to begin operating from the new facility by November 2019.

“This summer we noticed the demand got higher than we were capable of keeping up with,” Stone said on Friday morning while handing buckets of hops to head brewer Jim Deaton, who was “dry-hopping” the most recently brewed batch.

Stone and Deaton were in the original 7-barrel brewhouse that sits open beside the bar and restaurant of Bill’s Front Porch.

To understand brewery-speak you need to start with the barrel, a European measure of liquid equal to 31 gallons. Brewhouses are classified by the batch size they produce, meaning each time Deaton brews a batch of beer he brews seven barrels of it — or roughly 217 gallons.

Stone said the typical start-up brewery has similar production capabilities. For Bill’s, expanding to ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Sonnen Hill Brewing releases first pair of beers
A new brewery in Ontario’s Peel Region focused on “mixed-culture fermentation and hop-forward pale beers” has released its first pair of beers, Canadian Beer News reported on November 12.

Sonnen Hill Brewing has been founded by Calum Hill, a brewer who spent eight years training and working in the United Kingdom before returning home to Ontario and establishing the brewery on Heart Lake Road Farm, a 37-acre farm owned by his parents.

Named in honour of Brauerei zur Sonne, a brewery owned and operated from 1822 to 1982 by Bavarian ancestors on his mother’s side, as well as his own family surname, Sonnen Hill has launched with two beers that fall into the “hop-forward pale” category – Stealing Faces (4.5% abv), a pale ale dry hopped with Mosaic lupulin pellets, Galaxy, and Vic-Secret; and Gee Whiz (3.9% abv), a blonde ale dry hopped with Mosaic and Amarillo.

Sonnen Hill beers are currently available exclusively on draught, and can be found at select bars in Ontario, including Bar Lupulus in Ottawa, Birreria Volo in Toronto, and Arabella Park in Waterloo. A brewery bottle shop is planned to be opened in the future.

Brewery news UK: Study finds low and no-alcohol beer is becoming more socially acceptable
A new study commissioned by Carlsberg UK has found that more than half of UK consumers believe that low or no-alcohol beer is becoming more socially acceptable, the Drinks Insight Network reported on November 19.

Carried out by OnePoll, the study investigated the drinking habits of 2,000 adults in the country with a particular focus on low or no-alcohol beer.

The study found that 59% of respondents consumed low or no-alcohol drinks, while 52% agreed that the beverages had become more socially acceptable in the last year or two.

Around 28% of the respondents said that they would consider drinking an alcohol-free beer as an alternative to alcohol, and 26% said they would consider it over an alternative soft drink.

Carlsberg UK’s marketing vice-president Liam Newton said: “The UK has long been a nation known for its love of beer but we have seen a step-change in people’s attitudes towards moderation when it comes to drinking.

“Through our consumer research, we’ve been aware of this trend for some time, and as a result, we are increasing the number of low or no-alcohol alternatives in our range.”

The study also found that there are differences in attitudes toward alcohol between men and women. Around 35% of respondents ...More info on site

Brewery news Bosnia and Herzegovina: Brewer Bihacka Pivovara gets EUR1 mln loan from EBRD
Brewing has a long tradition in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Beer is among the population’s favourite drinks, especially in the summertime when demand can go up by a staggering 300 per cent, The Financial reported on November 16.

This year the sales have been even higher than usual, most likely due to the FIFA World Cup, explains Mr Edin Ibrahimpasic, CEO of Bihacka Pivovara.

The EBRD has supported the drinks producer with a €1 million loan through a local partner bank, Sparkasse Bank Sarajevo. This helped the company to buy a new beer-filling line and system and other equipment, allowing it to improve beer production and packaging.

All drinks meet the necessary European Union (EU) standards to be exported. While they’re only locally distributed for now, this provides the brewery with the option of expanding to other markets in the future.

The EU provided funds for the project, which ensure that the most suitable equipment is chosen and its installation verified later on. They also include an incentive payment to participating businesses to help create a market for such investments in the future.

Andrea Vera, Head of Operations Section for Economic Development, Trade, Infrastructure and Natural Resources at the EU Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina, highlights ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: AB InBev to raise prices of most of its beers in January
AB InBev’s Belgian business will slightly raise the price of most of its beers on 1 January. Supermarkets and the Horeca sector could make consumers cover this increase, Het Laatste Nieuws reported on November 17.

"We often advise to do so, although this should not necessarily be done immediately," Raf Peeters, from Horeca Vlaanderen Association, comments. According to him, the Alken-Maes Group might also review its prices upwards.

AB InBev - which owns Stella Artois, Jupiler, Leffe, Hoegaarden, Belle-Vue and Corona, among others - evokes a "slight increase in prices.’’ A barrel of Jupiler intended for Horeca will come to 153.84 euros, excise taxes and VAT included. For the consumer, "this equates to an average increase of 0.016 euros per glass of beer," AB InBev’s Laure Stuyck asserts.

The world's largest brewer will also sell its beer to supermarkets at an average higher price of 0.015 euros per bottle.

This price increase was expected because of the drought and the consequent higher grain prices.

AB InBev had claimed, however, three months ago that it did not plan to raise prices.

Barley news Australia: Feed grain prices drop as harvest continues
Feed grain prices have dropped between A$15 and A$40 in recent weeks in Australia and there are several factors at play, according to an industry expert.

Rabobank senior oilseeds and grains analyst Cheryl Kalisch-Gordon said recent rain across grain-growing regions was one part of the recent reduction in grain prices, The Weekly Times reported on November 20.

“We have had a big softening on feed grain demand due to some localised rainfalls,” Dr Kalisch-Gordon said.

“They aren’t by any stretch drought-breaking, but they will be taking the pressure off the feed grain complex.

“What it has also done, given some of the rainfalls up north, is given some prospect of sorghum and generally summer crops.

“It’s early days, but the fact that some will be planted does take a bit of pressure off that feed grain requirement.”

On Monday, November 19, Feed 1 barley delivered to Melbourne fetched A$384 a tonne, down from A$427 a tonne last month.

Wheat has also dropped, with H2 wheat delivered to Melbourne at A$435 a tonne this week, down on A$450 a tonne last month.

Dr Kalisch-Gordon said the wheat price was being pulled down by recent rain, traditional harvest softening, global wheat prices dropping and the strength of the Australian dollar.

Brewery news Rwanda: Bralirwa to start local production of Heineken
Rwanda’s biggest brewer, Bralirwa Ltd, will start making Heineken beer locally next month in a move that will allow it to cut retail prices by a fifth, Reuters reported on November 19.

Bralirwa, which produces local beers like Primus, has been importing Heineken made in the Netherlands. The company said the switch to brewing Heineken locally was made possible by investments in its plant.

The beer will also be exported to neighbouring countries. These include Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo.

The price per bottle of Heineken will drop to 800 francs ($0.9231) from 1,000 francs, once local production kicks in.

Rwanda will join Nigeria, Namibia, South Africa, Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia and Ethiopia as local producers of Heineken in Africa.
