DEMYSTIFYING NEW ENGLAND IPAS
ABSTRACT
New England IPAs (NEIPAs) are known for juiciness, soft
bitterness and very high turbidity. How those attributes
relate to hop components was dubiously investigated
so far. A group of US researcher did a thorough research of
these parameter and could show the following. Compared
to West Coast IPAs or other beers NEIPAs are
very high in humulinones, alpha acids, beta acids and
also Xanthohumol. Due to the high concentration of
humulinones these contribute about 50% to the total
bitterness. Because of the high amounts of humulinones
and alpha acids the measured IBUs are very misleading
for NEIPAs as they are often twice as high as the sensory
bitterness. The haze contributing fractions that can be
identified are proteins (36%) hops (11%) polyphenols
(3%) and fatty acids (1%) and not yeast!

USA: On-premise beer sales drop 1.6% in 2017
|
On-premise consumption of beverage alcohol fell 1.1% overall in 2017, to 1.7 million cases, according to the Beverage Information Group’s 2018 Cheers On-Premise Handbook. Much of that is due to the 1.6% decrease in cases of beer sold on-premise, while wine was up just 0.5%.
Spirits continues to be the bright spot, up 2.5% in 2017, although that’s down from the 4.7% increase the segment saw in 2016. Craft and classic cocktails are driving spirits sales in bars and restaurants, and consumers are also still interested in brown spirits, namely bourbon: On-premise sales of American whiskey increased 4.2% in 2017.
Although total consumption was down, retail dollar sales of beverage alcohol on-premise increased a bit in 2017, an indicator of the continuing premiumization trend. For instance, retail dollar sales of spirits grew 8%, wine rose 2.2% and beer was up 3.2% over 2016.
Wine consumption in the U.S. is driven primarily by women, who account for 52% of all on-premise wine consumers. Millennials have been an increasingly driving force in the wine category as they are an explorative group, and a generation more interested in trying new flavors than adhering to one style or one brand.

Australia: Coopers Brewery’s profit up 4% despite first fall in beer sales since 1993
|
Coopers Brewery has posted a four per cent increase in profit for the 2017-18 financial year, with Managing Director Dr Tim Cooper saying the brewer’s new malting plant has made a positive impact, The Australian reported on November 26.
Dr Cooper said profit before tax had reached A$34.3 mln, compared with A$33.4 mln for the previous financial year. This improved profit came despite the first fall in total beer sales since 1993, with Coopers beer volumes declining by 9.1 per cent. After allowing for products which were discontinued after FY17, the decline was 7.5 per cent.
“The opening of the new malting plant has delivered substantial savings on malt costs, along with improved malt quality,” Dr Cooper said.
Speaking about the fall is sales, he added: “This ended 24 consecutive years of volume growth at a compound annual growth rate of 8.9 per cent.
“Coopers last recorded 24 consecutive years of growth between 1905 and 1928.
“Factors behind the lower volumes included an increasingly active craft beer market, more aggressive retail space management and pricing by international brewers, and the introduction of the Container Deposit Scheme in NSW.

Japan: Beer market offering more variety thanks to expanded definition of beer
|
More and more distinctive beers are coming onto the market, thanks to the expanded definition of beer that came into effect in April under the revised Liquor Tax Law, The Japan News reported on November 26.
Secondary ingredients in beer were previously limited to such items as rice and corn, but now they can include things like fruits and spices.
On Oct. 18, the Yona Yona Beer Works Shintora-dori restaurant opened in Minato Ward, Tokyo. To commemorate the launch, a beer called Sorry Umami IPA was served, which is made with dried bonito fish flakes. Numerous beer fans flocked to the restaurant on the day of the launch.
Up until March, however, Sorry Umami IPA was classified as happoshu low-malt quasi-beer. Yoho Brewing Co. in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, developed it for export in 2016. Added to give the drink a distinctly Japanese touch, the bonito flakes also jack up the fermentation of the yeast, giving the beer a fresh, clear flavor, the company said.
Sorry Umami IPA has been well received in the United States, but it was treated as happoshu in Japan because of its secondary ingredient.

Croatia: Craft beer revolution about to start in Croatia

Four years ago, the craft beer production seemed like an impossible dream in Croatia. Although Croats like to drink beer and are among the top beer consumers in Europe, until four years ago they mostly drank corporate-produced beers. Offering a non-corporate product that would compete on the market meant going against the companies with virtually unlimited resources, loyal buyers and huge profits. However, Croatia’s craft beer revolution was about to start, reports Večernji List on November 25, 2018.
Varionica was one such producer. It was one of the first small breweries to offer its products to the Croatian market. At the time, their beers could be bought at just three venues in Zagreb and two on the Adriatic coast. The brand was launched by Matija Mrazek and Davor Simičić. “It was not difficult for me to leave a well-paid job and start brewing beer. That was inevitable when I decided to start this business since the administrative demands in Croatia regarding beer production are terribly burdensome. It took us two years to do all the paperwork to start the production,” said Davor.

Ghana: Guinness Ghana reintroduces its ABC Golden Lager Beer in Ghana

Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited (GGBL) has re-introduced its long-standing beer brand ABC Golden Lager Beer, onto the Ghanaian market to suit the needs and demands of its customers, the GhanaWeb reported on November 23.
The beer, which was officially unveiled on Saturday, November 23 at Jamestown in Accra, has a refreshing and satisfying taste with nutrients for its consumers.
ABC Golden Lager Beer comes in different packages, with the 300 millilitre costing GH¢2.50 and the 625 millilitre selling at GH¢4.00.
The beer was first introduced 45 years ago onto the Ghanaian market and the new brand was to enrich the celebration of joy and reflect the resolute optimism of the everyday Ghanaian, the company said.
Nana Boakye-Yiadom, the Corporate Communications Manager of GGBL, speaking at a media launch on November 23, said the company used 51 per cent locally sourced raw materials for all its products, however, ABC Golden Lager Beer had 70 per cent content of locally sourced raw materials.
He said by using 70 per cent of local raw materials for the beer, they expected to contribute to the sustainable development of farmers in the country and general economic growth.
