DEMYSTIFYING NEW ENGLAND IPAS

ABSTRACT
New England IPAs (NEIPAs) are known for juiciness, soft bitterness and very high turbidity. How those attributes relate to hop components was dubiously investigated so far. A group of US researcher did a thorough research of these parameter and could show the following. Compared to West Coast IPAs or other beers NEIPAs are very high in humulinones, alpha acids, beta acids and also Xanthohumol. Due to the high concentration of humulinones these contribute about 50% to the total bitterness. Because of the high amounts of humulinones and alpha acids the measured IBUs are very misleading for NEIPAs as they are often twice as high as the sensory bitterness. The haze contributing fractions that can be identified are proteins (36%) hops (11%) polyphenols (3%) and fatty acids (1%) and not yeast!

Brewery news USA: MillerCoors and Pabst Brewing settled settle lawsuit over brewing conflict
MillerCoors and Pabst Brewing settled a lawsuit on November 28 in which the hipster's brand of choice claimed the bigger brewer lied about its ability to continue brewing Pabst's beers to put that company out of business, CNBC reported.

The settlement came as jurors were ending their second day of deliberations after a two-week trial in Milwaukee County Circuit Court.

"We have reached an amicable settlement in the case and are pleased to resolve all outstanding issues with Pabst," MillerCoors said in a statement. Settlement details were not disclosed.

Since 1999, Chicago-based MillerCoors has made and shipped nearly all of Pabst's beers, which include Pabst Blue Ribbon, Old Milwaukee, Lone Star and Schlitz. Pabst's lawyers argued in the company's 2016 lawsuit that MillerCoors worried that Pabst would cut into its market share and devised a plan to stop brewing for the smaller competitor. MillerCoors' attorneys called Pabst's claim a conspiracy theory and said the company was simply deciding what makes economic sense.

The agreement between MillerCoors and Pabst, which was founded in Milwaukee in 1844 but is now headquartered in Los Angeles, expires in 2020 but provides for two possible five-year extensions. The companies disagreed on how the extensions were to be negotiated: MillerCoors ...More info on site

Brewery news Cameroon: SABC stops distributing draft beer
Cameroon’s brewer SABC has stopped distributing draft beer since it decided to not renew its contract with La Fontaine à Bière (FAB) due to plummeting sales, the Business in Cameroon reported on November 29.

The decision “is an initiative from the Castel group's headquarters in Paris, and not that of the current managers of SABC,” says an authorized source.

“The decision might be motivated by the lack of economic profitability of the contract for SABC, since the industry has been facing a decline in performance since FAB was awarded the contract for draft beer exclusive sale. We remind the principle that, in law, no one can be forced to remain in a contract indefinitely. Perpetual commitments are thus prohibited,” explains the same source, without giving more details.

Barley news Canada: Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre publishes its 2019-20 recommended malting barley varieties list
The Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) has released its annual list of malting barley varieties that hold the most promise for producers in terms of performance, quality and marketability.

The 2019-20 Recommended Malting Barley Variety List includes varieties that have been pilot scale tested by the CMBTC and which exhibit good malting and brewing characteristics. The recommendations are also based on input from grain companies, domestic and international maltsters and brewers, grower associations and seed companies, says Peter Watts, Managing Director of the CMBTC.

“The overall purpose of the list is to help producers choose malting barley varieties with the greatest potential to be selected for malt,” he says.

Canada is recognized by the global malting and brewing industry for high quality barley varieties such as AC Metcalfe and CDC Copeland. However, newer varieties are in the process of being introduced into the marketplace such as AAC Synergy, CDC Bow, AAC Connect, CDC Fraser and Lowe. With excellent malting quality and improved agronomics, including higher yields and better disease resistance, these varieties will ultimately improve Canada’s competiveness and support producer returns.

The CMBTC advises producers to talk to their local elevators, malting companies or grain buyers before making final decisions on which varieties ...More info on site
