WHERE DO THE IBUS GO?
ABSTRACT
A very good overview about IBU development during
brewing was presented by the Research Team of Ballast
Point Brewing. Although the measurement of IBU does
not reveal specifics about the measured components
(be it Isohumulones, alpha acids or humulinones) to
measure IBUs throughout the process is an efficient way
to get to know your hop processes better. Some findings
are not surprising but important for efficient brewing.
The bitterness utilization decreases with increasing hop
rates and increasing original gravity values. Utilization
increases with higher pH values. Based on IBUs and
depending on bitterness level utilization values in the
whirlpool can vary between 8-45%.

USA: Analysts note craft beer sales growth within on-premise establishments this year
|
After the boom and subsequent plateauing of craft beer sales in the US, on-premise experiential drinking establishments are managing to draw in new customers. Brewpubs, taprooms and game-based bars all saw a surge in popularity in 2018, BeverageDaily.com reported on December 10.
Three years ago in-store craft beer sales were seeing a sales growth increase of 12.9%. In-store craft beer sales took a knock between 2017 and 2018, declining 0.2%, yet still reaching $4.9 bln. And according to Nielsen data, there are positive signs of sales growth within US on-premise establishments.
Drinkers are now more drawn to experience-based locations for their alcohol consumption than typical bars with no extra incentives. Consumers said they have visited experiential locations 'more often' in the last year, rather than 'less often', with 43% trying out game-based bars, 42% at a brewery tasting room, 42% at rooftop bars, 42% at premium bars and 41% at groce-rants (a cross between grocery market and restaurant or cafe).

The Czech Republic: Bernard brewery reports record production in 2018
|
Mid-sized Czech brewer Bernard has reported record production figures for 2018, the Radio Prague reported on December 9.
The brewer produced over 356,000 hectolitres of beer between January and November, exceeding last year’s production by around 24,000 hectolitres.
Around 22 percent of Bernard’s production was exported in 2018, which is around one fifth more than in the previous year. The biggest export destinations are Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Russia.

Aguila is steadily climbing the ranks as the bona fide beer brand of Colombia. The business valuation company, Brand Finance, deemed the beer famous for its patriotic yellow label as the second strongest beer brand in the world and included it in the top 25 of the world’s most valuable beer brands in its end-of-year report. Two years ago Belgium-based beer behemoth Anheuser-Busch InBev acquired SABMiller–which owned the Colombian subsidiary Bavaria Brewing— and since then its Colombian beer brands have ascended in the marketing ranks, The Bogota Post reported on December 7.
Until 2005, Bavaria Brewing was Colombia’s largest brewery. All of the regional arguments about which of Colombia’s beer is tastiest and most refreshing (and cheapest) can be traced back to the expertise and marketing genius of Leo Kopp, a German migrant who founded the country’s first brewery in 1889. The most notable Colombian beer brands include Poker, Costeńa, Club Colombia, and Pilsen, all of which fall under the Bavaria umbrella. Aguila, the pale golden lager from Barranquilla, is the peacemaking beer as it is the official sponsor for the national Colombian soccer team.

Italy: Court reverses trademark decision previously in favour of Heineken’s Italian arm
|
Heineken’s Italian arm suffered defeat last week when the EU General Court reversed a European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) decision that had previously gone in its favour, the World Intellectual Property Review reported on December 10.
The General Court delivered its decision in the trademark dispute on Friday, December 7.
Heineken Italia applied to register an EU figurative mark depicting the word ‘Cervisia’ and a circular element containing the representation of a seahorse with the EUIPO in 2014.
The beer manufacturer sought to register the mark in classes 32 and 33 for beers, fruit drinks, and alcoholic beverages.
The following year, Spanish beer producer La Zaragozana filed an opposition on the basis of its earlier-registered Spanish word mark ‘Cervisia Ambar’ (3,018,141), which was registered in 2012 in class 32 for beer.
In 2016, the EUIPO’s Opposition Division upheld La Zaragozana’s opposition after finding that a likelihood of confusion exists between the existing mark and the applied-for mark.
However, the Fifth Board of Appeal annulled the decision in 2017, finding that the aural similarity between the marks is outweighed by the visual and conceptual differences.

UK & India: UK court rules beer baron Vijay Mallya should be extradited to India
|
Business tycoon Vijay Mallya should be extradited from the United Kingdom to India to face fraud charges, a London court ruled on December 10.
The decision was confirmed by R. K. Gaur, a spokesperson for India's Central Bureau of Investigation. The extradition must also be approved by the UK Secretary of State.
Mallya, who was once known as the "King of Good Times," has waged an extended court battle to avoid extradition to India, where he has been charged with fraud and money laundering.
The beer baron took over as chairman of his father's United Breweries Group — known for India's hugely popular Kingfisher Beer — in 1983, and eventually poured money into a Formula 1 team and Indian Premier League cricket.
But the case against him is centered around Kingfisher Airlines, the carrier he founded that went bust six years ago.
He's being pursued by 17 Indian banks, who are trying to recover an estimated $1.3 billion in loans to Kingfisher Airlines. He has been charged by Indian investigators with diverting money from one of those loans into other assets and businesses and misleading his creditors. Mallya has repeatedly denied the charges.
