Canada: Barley export market continues to be very vibrant
|
The Canadian barley export market continues to be very vibrant, with exports from August 1 – December 31 at 954,000 tonnes. This compares with 772,000 tonnes last year at this time and the five-year average of 519,000 tonnes, the CMBTC reported on January 9.
China continues to be the most dominant buyer, importing over 500,000 tonnes since August 1 of feed and malting barley, the majority being malting. Canada’s second largest customer was Japan (136,000 tonnes) and then Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) (105,000 tonnes of feed barley).
There will be more sales executed through January forward and China remains a buyer of malt barley for positions April through the summer months, providing Western Canada has sufficient barley to market, the CMBTC analysts said.
Canadian malting barley sales now are primarily focused on the domestic market, which purchases roughly 900,000 tonnes per year, and the export market that is dominated by China. The United States (U.S.) market, which in the 2000s bought over 250,000 tonnes per year, has significantly cut its imports of Canadian barley in recent years. This past year, with the Buy America campaign, they were contracting virtually no malt barley from Canada.

USA, CA: Great Change Brewing launches in Bakersfield
|
Tucked away near the intersection of White Lane and Gosford, Great Change Brewing has officially opened its doors to the public in Bakersfield, KBAK/KBFX reported on January 7.
"We want to create an environment where people come down to just relax. This is a place that people can call their, their own Bakersfield craft brewery,” said Tim Belmont, one of the brewery’s co-owners.
Great Change has four inaugural beers on tap, with several more currently being developed.
The brewery has enlisted the help of award-winning Kern County brewer Kyle Smith, and is specifically focused on having a west coast inspired tap list.
"The west coast style is, you know, it's not complicated, it's simple. It's all about having balanced malt, balanced hot flavor and just big flavored beers,” Belmont said.
And those big flavors are already resonating with customers.
"I tried the pale ale, that was fantastic. The stout...really good,” said Gus Cristicini.
But as far as Belmont is concerned, Great Change's grand opening is just the first step, and he hopes that it can one day be a staple in the brewing world not just here in Bakersfield, but all around California
"This is going to be a production facility. So our idea is have this a

USA, TN: Next Level Brewing Company aiming at spring opening
|
Andrew Armstrong and Nathaniel Sears always knew they would work together. That mindset never changed, even after they graduated from South College brewing school in 2015 and went their separate ways to continue learning the craft — Armstrong, all the way to California, the Knoxville News Sentinel reported on January 4.
In fall 2017, an opportunity arose when Sears and Rick Cox reached out with a business plan for a brewery at 700 N. Broadway. Armstrong read it through.
"He literally packed up his life and moved here from Northern California to do this with us," Sears said. "We've come to a point where things have happened pretty fast here."
Armstrong, Sears and Cox — instructors at the Knoxville Brewing and Distilling Center — will create and serve the latest trending styles of beer and the ones each member of the trio enjoys to drink when they open Next Level Brewing Company in the spring.
"The goal is to really stay fresh with what the industry is doing," Armstrong said. "Right now, that is fruited sours, barrel-aged stouts and IPAs."
The name of the brewery comes from the path the brewers took to get to this point: learning the trade,

USA, NY: Village board approves brewery proposal for Pittsford
|
A first is coming to the Village of Pittsford. A proposed brewery won approval on Thursday, January 3, WHAM reported.
The village board approved it months after village trustees tried to stop it.
The vote was essentially the moment owners of the proposed brewery were waiting for. The decision gives them the okay to move forward with the next step in the project.
"I'm in awe, shocked right now, no idea this was going in this direction," said Hawley Brewing Company Co-Owner Clay Killian.
Excitement comes for Killian as he and his partners can now move forward with their idea to turn 50 State Street in Pittsford into the Hawley Brewing Company.
"We've done everything we could to adhere they were looking for," said Killian.
With all in favor, but one, the Pittsford Village Planning and Zoning Board of Appeals approved the project.
The plan slated along the Erie Canal had turned into a back and forth discussion between the board and applicant during the past year and half. That is how long it has been since it was first presented to town officials.
The idea is to use the 1500 square foot space at the Northfield Commons.
"I'm really looking forward to working with other businesses in the

USA, NY: Hawley Brewing Co. to proceed with construction after board’s vote
|
A proposed nano-brewery and tasting room along the Erie Canal in Pittsford will proceed after a decision by the village's Planning and Zoning Board of Appeals, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported on January 4.
The board voted on January 3 to deny an appeal by the village trustees. It upheld a determination by the then-village building inspector that cleared the way for the Hawley Brewing Co. at 50 State St. near Schoen Place.
Village trustees voted by a 4-0 margin to appeal the building inspector's decision in October. Trustee Dan Keating abstained. The next step will be for the brewery to secure building permits, project attorney Don Young said.
Co-owner/head brewer Clay Killian couldn't hide his relief and excitement. He said they're looking forward to working with other businesses in the area.
"I'm in awe. I'm shocked right now," Killian said. "I had no idea that this was going to go in this direction. I'm very excited."
The proposed project would renovate an existing building and occupy less than 1,500 square feet at Northfield Commons. But the village currently has a moratorium on new construction projects as it works to update its comprehensive plan. The plan was last updated in 2002.

USA, NY: The Patchogue Beer Project welcomes first public in Patchogue Village
|
The most state-of-the-art micro brew operation on Long Island has just opened in Patchogue Village, the GreaterPortJeff reported on January 5.
The Patchogue Beer Project has been 2 1/2 years in the making.
“It’s such a great feeling,” said co-owner Mackenzie Dispirito, while tending to a packed bar during Saturday’s opening day. “Just that we’re part of the community now. We can’t wait to host events, fundraisers, and get everyone involved.
“Everyone loves good beer.”
There are no kegs at Patchogue Beer Project, and the entire brewing process is visible to the public, with the storage areas, mash tons, fermenters and vessels all behind glass.
The beer is piped from the fermenters and across the ceiling to the storage tanks, which then feed the taps. There are even two storage tanks built into the tasting room bar.
“It’s pretty amazing, actually,” said Dave Schultzer, the owner of Bellport Cold Beer & Soda and a pioneer in growing the popularity of craft beer on Long Island. “I’ve never seen anything like this in all the places I’ve ever been.”
Port Jeff Brewing Company owner Mike Philbrick is also involved in the project.
He heads the brewing operation and designed the brewing system, though he’s not the head brewer.

USA, PA: The Appalachian Brewing Company closes location in Collegeville
|
The Appalachian Brewing Company has announced it has closed one of its locations, PennLive.com reported on January 5.
ABC Collegeville located at 50 W. Third Ave. in Collegeville, Montgomery County closed in late December. The company said the closing was due to challenges and costs to keep the facility up to its standards. The company said it had hoped to reopen the facility this year but said that there were “too many hurdles” and the location will be closing for good.
The brewery was founded in 1997 in Harrisburg and has locations in Dauphin, Cumberland, Adams, Lancaster and Chester counties. Last year, the Appalachian Brewing Company opened two new locations, one in the Shippensburg area and the other one in the West Chester area.

USA: Heineken to launch 7.5% ABV Tecate beer in the US
|
Heineken will launch a 7.5% ABV Tecate beer in a single-serve 24oz can to capitalise on the sales growth of high-strength beers in US convenience stores, FoodBev.com reported on January 9.
Tecate Titanium is said to have a distinct flavour and aroma that is the result of “an obsessive and tireless brewing process that results in higher alcohol content and refreshing drinkability”.
Heineken said the brew enters a market segment where total 6.5%+ ABV products are growing 10.1% and singles cans are growing 11.6%.
Belen Pamukoff, Tecate brand director, said: “Titanium provides an opportunity to further expand the fast-growing Mexican category with a unique high-ABV option.
“Our core target, Hispanic c-store shoppers, are currently underserved by existing high-ABV options as they are 13% less likely to have purchased than the average shopper and have spent 30% less on the segment. We are offering a superior liquid at a competitive price point, in a segment our shopper target is familiar with.
“We see a gap in the market where most of the high-ABV options are non-beers, inferior beers, or hoppy craft beers. Titanium is bold, but it’s also highly refreshing.”
Heineken said the beverage aims to capitalise on the continuing growth of Mexican imports in the US.

Zimbabwe: AB InBev’s Delta Beverages abandons plan to only accept hard currency payments
|
Zimbabwe's largest brewing company Delta Beverages, part-owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev, said it has abandoned a plan to only accept hard currency payments to cope with a crippling shortage of US dollars, after the government intervened, ESM reported on January 5.
Delta Beverages announced on January 2 that it would only take payments in US currency and would no longer accept electronic dollars known as 'Zollars', or a quasi-currency known as 'bond notes', amid a severe shortage of hard currency in Zimbabwe.
However, the country's commerce minister said on January 3 that the government opposed the plan and Delta, 40% owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev, scrapped the plan following a meeting with senior politicians and reserve bank officials.
"Delta withdraws the notice to sell its products exclusively in hard currency, in the spirit of the multi-currency framework," Delta and Zimbabwe's reserve bank said in a joint statement late on January 3.
The reserve bank said it would endeavour to provide the foreign currency required to ensure that Delta continues to trade "on the current basis".
In a separate statement on January 4, Delta said shortages of its products, particularly soft drinks, would persist while the arrangement gets underway.
Zimbabwe's currency crisis is undermining President Emmerson Mnangagwa's efforts to

Kazakhstan: Carlsberg Kazakhstan production capacity increased by 20%
|
As a result of the modernization carried out in 2018, the production capacity in Carlsberg Kazakhstan's plant increased by 20 percent and new jobs were created, the Trend reported on January 8 citing the company CEO Victor Semak.
"Also, we launched a new keg filling line in 2018. The quality of water that we use to brew our beer plays a significant role in ensuring the high quality of our products - we extract the water from artesian springs with a depth of up to 300 meters," he noted.
Semak also added that over the past years Carlsberg Kazakhstan has been investing in and successfully implementing TPM lean production projects, consistently reducing the carbon footprint and water losses.
"Thus, since 2012, the company has managed to reduce its specific consumption of water by 51 percent, of thermal energy by 55.8 percent, and of electricity by 42.9 percent," the company CEO said.
It should be noted that in the first half of 2018, the share of Carlsberg Kazakhstan on the country's beer market increased by 3 percent year-on-year and amounted to 41.2 percent. The company has firmly established itself on the first place in the draft beer production and on the third place in the

Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation hikes beer prices by 25%
|
Zimbabwe’s largest brewer Delta Corporation hiked beer prices by 25 percent on January 7 citing high local costs, announcing the move days after it was forced to abandon another plan to accept only hard currency payments for its products, Reuters reported.
Like many companies in Zimbabwe, Delta, which is 40 percent-owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev, has been hit by an acute shortage of U.S. dollars, affecting its capacity to import inputs like concentrates and remit dividends to foreign shareholders.
Delta said it was still to make a decision on prices of soft drinks and other products.
“The adjustment to the wholesale price is meant to cushion against the significant increases in local costs, confirmed by the official inflation statistics,” Delta said in a statement.
Annual inflation soared to a 10-year high of 31.01 percent in November after prices of basic goods spiked.
Zimbabwe has experienced a shortage of soft drinks and beer since November with shops limiting quantities, while some businesses tripled prices to take advantage of the shortages.
Delta said last week it had abandoned a plan to accept only hard currency payments to cope with a crippling shortage of U.S. dollars, after the government intervened.

UK: Scottish breweries could face glass shortage this year
|
The Brewers Association of Scotland has warned that breweries may face a glass shortage when two furnaces close for renovation works, in a position reminiscent the carbon dioxide shortage caused by production facilities closing to be refurbished earlier this year, the Herald Scotland reported on January 8.
Scott Williams, who is Williams Bros' managing director and also TBAS chair, said: "Scottish brewers have continued to thrive as a community.
"We always outperform at beer tastings and competitions and we seem to be managing to keep going with that which is great.
"In terms of what’s happening in the year ahead there are some challenges because there is not enough glass being made in the UK."
Scottish capital-based Innis and Gunn has reported a "transformational" year as it shifted a focus onto lager then announced plans for a new brewery in 2019 and Alloa-based Williams Bros will switch on new machinery that will up output by about 50 per cent.
It comes after Scottish Food and Drink said brewers north of the border must move to protect their market position.
Dougal Sharp, founder of Innis and Gunn, hailed its £20 million brewery plans but also saluted the coming of age of craft lager.
He said: "I think you
