USA: Beer dollar sales grow to more than USD35 bln last year
|
Total U.S. beer dollar sales grew to more than $35 billion in 2018, according to retail data provider IRI, Brewbound reported on January 14.
The Chicago-based market research firm, which tracks category-wide sales at major off-premise retailers, reported a 1.8 percent increase in beer dollar sales, despite a 0.3 percent decline in volume sales at multi-outlet and convenience (MULC) stores (grocery, drug, club, dollar, mass-merchandiser and military) through December 30.
Dollar sales of domestic premium brands (Bud Light, Budweiser, Miller Lite, Coors Light, and others), declined 4.2 percent, to more than $12.6 billion last year.
Meanwhile, five segments — imports, craft beer, domestic super premiums, flavored malt beverages and cider — grew dollar sales in 2018. Dollar sales of imported beer, the beer category’s second-largest segment behind domestic premium, increased 7.4 percent, to more than $7 billion.
Dollar sales of craft beer increased 2.5 percent, to more than $4.2 billion, last year. However, sales decelerated from 2017’s increase of 5.6 percent. In fact, 17 of IRI’s top 30 craft brands posted dollar sales declines in 2018.
At the same time, three segments grew dollar sales double-digits in 2018. Sales of domestic super premiums were up 15.2 percent, to $2.9 billion, while sales of flavored malt

USA: Trouble brewing in craft beer industry over government shutdown
|
There's trouble brewing in the craft beer industry over the government shutdown, NBCNEws.com reported on January 12.
Because the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has been furloughed by the partial government shutdown, breweries have been unable to secure necessary approvals from the agency's tax and trade bureau — ranging from permits for new facilities to new labels on cans.
In a business dependent on releasing and marketing new beers regularly to quench its customers' expectations for novelty, those delays could potentially be financially devastating.
"It’s really that question mark that’s the scary part, because we don’t have that end in sight," Mariah Scanlon, brand manager for Smuttlab, a line from Smuttynose Brewing Company in Hampton, New Hampshire, told NBC News.
"You can’t develop a contingency strategy without knowing how long [the shutdown] is going to go on."
To ship beer over state lines, breweries need certificates of label approvals from the ATF's trade bureau for any new packaging or beer branding. Last year alone, the government agency processed 34,166 label applications for malt beverages, an average of 93.6 a day, according to the trade group, the Brewers Association.
Brewers producing new recipes that fall outside the bureau's pre-approved list also require a formula

USA, PA: Platform Beer Co. planning a new brewery in Pittsburgh by this summer
|
Platform Beer Co. plans to open a brewery and tasting room in Pittsburgh and is targeting a summer 2019 opening. Pittsburgh would mark the first tasting room location that Platform would operate outside of Ohio. Platform is finalizing the lease on a 2-story, 8,000 sq. ft. space located in the city’s Bloomfield Neighborhood. The project would include a 10 barrel brewhouse, multiple fermenters, canning line, barrel aging, 100 plus seating capacity and 24 plus taps, Brewbound.com reported on January 12.
“We are opening with a big enough brewhouse to allow fora nice variety of draft beer made on-site in Pittsburgh. Our packaging capability will also allow for limited can release offerings on a regular basis. Locals will be able to experience some of our more unique, smaller batch beers,” explains co-owner Paul Benner. The space will also feature a kitchen with a specialized food menu along with a private space for larger events.
According to Justin Carson, co-owner, “There are a number of reasons why the Pittsburgh market makes sense for our next tasting room. Existing distribution, consumer drinking trends, geography, location of the space and the desire to engage with the local community are just a few reasons why we are

USA, OH: Royal Docks Brewing Co. looking to open a pub and a brewery in Akron
|
Royal Docks Brewing Co. is looking to open a pub and small brewery in downtown Akron as part of the $42 million Bowery redevelopment project, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported on January 10.
The brewery is the first potential tenant publicly linked with the project.
Royal Docks, which operates a production brewery and separate tasting room in Jackson Township, is looking to expand outside Stark County as more consumers seek locally made craft beer.
“As things turn more and more local, it’s up to us to become local to more and more places,” award-winning Royal Docks brewer Dave Sutula said. “And Akron is right up the street. If we were in Cleveland? That proximity? Everybody would say we’re local. But for people in Akron, Canton might as well be Atlanta.”
The brewery is now working on drawings for the project and “figuring out where the cash comes from,” he said.
Beth Borda, vice president at DeHoff Development Co., part of the Bowery Development Group, confirmed Thursday that the company is in discussions with Royal Docks but said a lease has not been signed. The company is talking with other interested tenants, as well, she said.
She declined to identify other potential tenants.

USA, KY: Sig Luscher Brewery now open in downtown Frankfort
|
There’s a new stop along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail in Frankfort, just a stone’s throw from Buffalo Trace Distillery. But it’s not a distillery — it’s the rebirth of a 19th-century brewery, the Insider Louisville reported on January 13.
Sig Luscher Brewery is now open downtown, just across the street from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, a cozy, 400-square-foot taproom with a small brewhouse, a bar and an enclosed deck.
The interior of the tiny facility has the feel of a cabin, with a cathedral ceiling in the bar area, wood walls and ceilings, and bourbon barrels for tables. The tiny bar seats about five people, and a pair of flatscreen TVs offer entertainment for those who want to sip a beer and watch a game.
A beer garden is planned, as well.
At the bar, visitors can get a 12- or 23-ounce pour of one of two beers (currently). For non-beer drinkers, there’s wine and a selection of bourbons. For designated drivers, there’s a selection of soft drinks available.
If you’re hungry, there are pretzel sticks with dip and steamed hot dogs, and the business opens at 7 a.m. weekdays, selling coffee and bagels.
The branding of the business is heavily rooted in the history of

USA, MI: Guardian Brewing Co. opens its doors in Saugatuck
|
A new brewery opened up in Saugatuck on Friday, January 11 in the historic Red Barn building, the Grand Haven Tribune reported on January 12.
Guardian Brewing Co. was founded by Kim Collins and Kate Bishop. They bought the Red Barn Theater in 2016 and started transforming it into the brewery.
The Red Barn has been a part of the architectural landscape in Saugatuck since 1912 when it was built for use as a horse barn. By 1948, the barn was converted into a community theater and it was painted its signature red.
Over the decades, the barn was developed and changed ownership.
Guardian Brewing Co. has a restaurant, brewery, classroom and event center. Yurts will be available to rent overnight in the spring.
Guardian Brewing Co. added on 8,000 square feet of development to the barn. In the future, they plan to expand further and build out the event space.

USA, GA: Scofflaw Brewing building second location in Atlanta
|
Scofflaw Brewing is building a second location in their home city of Atlanta, Georgia, the Beer Street Journal reported on January 11.
Selig Enterprises announced that Scofflaw Brewing will join The Works, an 80-acre mixed-use development coming to Atlanta’s Upper Westside.
Scofflaw’s home at The Works will span 9,000 square feet and serve as the brewery’s main R&D facility. Expect an open design with a large outdoor area featuring games and friend gathering places. The open plan will be designed to give brewery attendees a more intimate look at the brewing process.
“I have a great relationship with the Selig family and their business. There was no question that creating a Scofflaw R&D brewery and tasting room at The Works was the right strategic decision for our team,” Scofflaw CEO Matt Shirah said.
Scofflaw Brewing’s new location will be built alongside a 16,000 square foot food hall by Robert Montwaid known as Chattahoochee Food Works. The food hall will feature food vendors, entertainment and chef-driven events, a test kitchen and artisanal market shops.
The Works is an 80-acre adaptive mixed-use development Atlanta’s Upper Westside, located off Chattahoochee Ave. near Topgolf Midtown. According to Selig, The Works’ vision includes “distinctive retail and dining, imaginative experiences and

Ukraine: Ukraine reduces barley exports in first half of marketing year 2018/19
|
Ukraine exported 3.13 mln tonnes of barley in the first half of MY 2018/19, or 18% less than in the same period last season (3.81 mln tonnes). Moreover, this is the smallest volume in five years, reports UkrAgroConsult.
As a reminder, as the country's barley crop has fallen to a six-year low, UkrAgroConsult forecasts its 2018/19 exports down 14%.
As before, the key destination for Ukrainian barley exports is Saudi Arabia. Despite the overall drop in exports, shipments to this country were up 28% year-on-year at 2.16 mln tonnes.
Exporters managed to boost shipments to Japan to 120 thousand tonnes compared with 34 thousand in the whole of MY 2017/18. China, though remaining a major buyer of Ukrainian barley, has reduced purchases almost by half this season, to 380 thousand tonnes against 789 thousand in MY 2017/18.
According to UkrAgroConsult’s estimates, Ukraine’s barley export potential has already been 85% realized.

Japan: Craft breweries and distilleries investing into their own unique take on whiskey
|
As inventories at Japan's big whisky makers run dry on a surge in demand, craft breweries and distilleries nationwide are making heavy investments to fill the gap with their own unique take on the spirit, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on January 12.
Many of these companies have never made whisky before, but they see big opportunities in the market.
Niigata Beer is spending 50 million yen ($450,000) to turn its warehouse into a whisky distillery, complete with its own still. The Niigata Prefecture-based company even bought 50,000 sq. meters in northern Japan to grow oak for casks.
"Our selling point will be a unique taste developed by a brewery," President Ken Usami said.
Kinryu, which makes shochu spirits in Yamagata Prefecture, kicked a new distillery into full gear in November. The facility produces whisky using the famed spring water from nearby Mount Chokai, aging the alcohol at least three years before it hits the shelf as early as 2021.
Kiuchi Brewery in Ibaraki Prefecture is renovating a former community hall for 400 million yen, with plans to start whisky production there around June. It will use locally grown wheat and rice to craft a product with a distinct regional character.

The Czech Republic: Beer in Prague the cheapest among all major cities in Europe
|
Beer is Prague is half as expensive as in Berlin and is the cheapest in any major city in Europe, Prague.tv reported on January 9.
At the same time, Czechs are the highest consumers of beer in the world, and are also among the highest spenders by percent of consumption expenditure on alcohol in Europe.
In Prague restaurants, beer is often cheaper than water on the menu. “While in Prague we have an average of more than five beers for Kč 200, in other major European cities it is often a maximum of two beers,” Adéla Denková, head of the analytical project Evropa v datech, said, according to daily Metro. The data was drawn from an analysis by Deutsche Bank.
“In the second place behind Prague was Warsaw with four pints and in third was Lisbon with three and a half. In Berlin you get about two and a half beers for [the equivalent of] Kč 200,” Denková added.
According to a recent survey of the Center for Public Opinion Research (CVVM), beer is consumed by 86 percent of Czech men and 49 percent of Czech women. Male drinkers consume it about three and a half times a week and drink about 7.6

Japan & Australia: Suntory announces launch of Suntory Whisky Toki in Australia
|
House of Suntory has announced the launch of Suntory Whisky Toki, a blend of whiskies from the Hakushu, Yamazaki and Chita distilleries, in Australia, The Shout reported on January 15.
The new whisky, which will launch in Australia in February, is said to reflect Japan as a land of “contrasts” and “paradox”, both respecting tradition and challenging whisky convention in the way it is blended.
In particular, Suntory blends often use Yamazaki malts as their key component, but not so for Toki. Instead, House of Suntory’s fourth chief blender, Shinji Fukuyo, took a fresh approach for this whisky – selecting Hakushu American white oak cask malt whisky as one of the blends two pillars.
Hakushu American white oak – known for its unique freshness, mellowness and green apple notes – is complemented by Chita “heavy-type” grain whisky, adding a clean taste with notes of sweetness and vanilla.
Suntory says that by pairing these seemingly dissimilar whiskies, chief blender Fukuyo has “overturned the old relationship between malt and grain” and “created a blend that is both groundbreaking and timeless.”
To give the whisky greater complexity, Fukuyo also selected two Yamazaki malts (American white oak and Spanish oak) to add to the blend. The resulting whisky (43%
