USA, WA: Doomsday Brewing Company to open third location in Vancouver by this summer
|
Doomsday Brewing Company, a microbrewery specializing in small batch craft beer and artisan pizza, announced on January 30 that they have expanded with a third location at Hazel Dell Towne Center in Vancouver, WA after negotiating a lease since September 2018. Following the successful opening of their Washougal, WA brewpub in 2014 and their downtown Vancouver, WA taproom in 2016, this location is scheduled to open in May/June 2019.
The yet to be named Hazel Dell location will be 3000 Sq/ft with an addition 600 Sq/ft patio. It will feature Doomsday Brewing craft beer, local hard cider, and local wine. The pub will be offering beer to-go in cans and growlers. The food menu will include artisan pizza, salads, wraps, sausage dogs and appetizers. They will of course be family friendly during all hours of operation.
Erik Cloe and Jake Walton, the owners of Doomsday Brewing Company, said: “We are excited to bring our family friendly pub and pizza concept from our headquarters in Washougal, WA to where we both currently live. This part of Hazel Dell has experienced massive growth in that past couple years, we are proud to offer our small batch craft beer and artisan pizza to the community.”

Canada: Molson Coors in discussions with Groupe Selection for sale of its iconic Montreal brewery
|
Molson Coors has confirmed it is in discussions with Groupe Sélection for the sale of its iconic Montreal brewery, CBC reported on January 31.
Groupe Sélection, formerly known as Réseau Sélection, is best known for building retirement homes throughout Quebec.
It was selected from several bidders. According to Molson Coors, there are now several steps to complete before the sale is completed.
The brewery, in operation since 1786, was put on the market in the fall after the company decided to move its operation to a new plant in Longueuil by the year 2021. However, it will maintain its offices in Montreal.
The brewery, which towers over Notre-Dame Street near the Jacques-Cartier Bridge along the St. Lawrence River, has been the subject of a public consultation that began last week.
The departure of Molson offers "a unique opportunity to rethink the relationship to the river," reads a document prepared by Montreal's public consultation office (OCPM).
Sale of Molson brewery site could mean change on the horizon for Centre-Sud area
The City of Montreal has given itself a right of first refusal on the Molson site, meaning it could buy the property at the same price as that offered by an eventual buyer.

USA, MN: Under Pressure Brewing Company being launched in Golden Valley by one of Minnesota’s most lauded homebrewers
|
One of Minnesota’s most lauded and detail-driven homebrewers is finally seeing her brewery dreams come to fruition with the opening of Under Pressure Brewing Company in Golden Valley, The Growler reported on January 29.
Lori Ertl, alongside her co-owners and co-brewers John Keenan and Tyler Marchiniak, decided to pursue large-scale brewing because of the way it blends passion, production, and people.
“There is no other kind of business so warm and inviting as brewing,” Ertl says of both her customers and the brewers at Urban Growler, Hayes’ Public House, and Lakes & Legends, among others, who helped get Under Pressure up and running by providing helpful information, contacts, and support.
She first began homebrewing as an extension of her love for cooking and working with flavor profiles as well as her delight in sharing her creations with those around her. During five years as a homebrewer before going large-scale, Ertl won 41 medals through BJCP-sanctioned competitions.
Having brewed successfully on her own, Ertl wanted to open a brewery with the same water profile she was accustomed to working with. She, Keenan, and Marchiniak began working with officials in Golden Valley around 2015 on an ordinance for their future business. Soon thereafter, the trio began

USA, UT: Silver Reef Brewing Co. to become St. George’s very first microbrewery
|
St. George, Utah will welcome Silver Reef Brewing Co., its very first microbrewery, KUTV 2News reported on February 1.
Microbreweries are known for producing small amounts of crafted beer and are increasing in popularity. Owner David Moody began constructing the brewery last year when he noticed the increased popularity of craft beer and lack of it in the local area.
Michael Key is the Director of Brewing Operations and is trained in German style brewing — which means the beer is never forced carbonated. The beer's quality comes from performing reverse osmosis to nearby water into polished beer water.
"Water is the most important ingredient in beer. You can have the best hops the best malt, the best yeast, but if your water is not good, your beer is not good," Key said.
Silver Reef Brewing Co. is presenting three 3.2 percent draft beers:
The first is a hazy session-style IPA called "Fresh and Juicy." It was brewed with five different hops and a malt called Golden Promise. Key says "it's not bitter," but rather "nice and tropical."
The second beer is an American red ale called "Color Country Red." It is fermented with Belgian ale yeast.
The third beer is a Mexican-style lager named "Agua del

Canada, BC: Whistle Buoy Brewing Company finalizing application process in Victoria
|
A new brewery and tasting room is coming to Victoria, BC this summer, the Peninsula News Review reported on February 1.
Whistle Buoy Brewing Company is finalizing its application process for a spot at 63-560 Johnson St., most recently applying for a lounge in conjunction with a production license.
“We want to offer fresh, local beer,” said retail manger Isaiah Archer. “We’re brewing on site in a small system for our products to be consumed on site… that’s the core of our business, making good beer and consuming it in a community space.”
The tap room will fit 51 people, while an outdoor patio will hold 57 people.
Unlike many local craft brewers, Whistle Buoy won’t be aiming to purchase a canning line and get its beer in local liquor stores; instead it will offer small on-site retail options in the form of bottles and on-demand growler fills.
The team behind Whistle Buoy is comprised of young entrepreneurs who want to keep things local.
“We all live in the community, and it will be owner-operated,” said Iwan Williams, operations manager. “We hope it will be a micro-stimulus where money stays in the community.”
During the application process, Whistle Buoy’s team spent a week consulting neighbours including the

USA, MD: Ocean City Brewing Company files for bankruptcy
|
Ocean City Brewing Company filed for bankruptcy late last year, and a public auction of its equipment was recently announced, signaling a no-go for a new brewery at the Coastal Highway location, the Delmarva Daily Times reported on January 31.
Fermentation tanks, a 30 barrel brewhouse, a keg washer and a myriad of other brewing and kitchen equipment will be liquidated Feb. 19 to fulfil over half a million dollars in legal claims.
Every piece of equipment not affixed to the building at 5509 Coastal Highway will be sold, and the auction is a trustee sale, according to Atlantic Auctions vice president and general manager Jack Levi.
OC Brewing filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Nov. 8, court records show. The public auction will be held on behalf of multiple creditors filing claims against OC Brewing. Those claims total just over $530,000, court records show.
Last fall, new brews and signage with a company logo suggested Ironweed Ale Werks had planned to re-brand OC Brewing. In 2017, OC Brewing's owner, Joshua Shores, was sentenced to five years in prison for a $2.5 million wire fraud scheme involving a separate string of companies.
Because of transitions in ownership and an uncompleted liquor license application,

UK: Diageo able to cope with any possible disruption in case of no-deal Brexit - CEO
|
As Pernod Ricard revealed that it has begun stockpiling ahead of a potential no-deal Brexit, Diageo very firmly emphasised that it too will be able to cope with any possible disruption without “material effect” on the company, The Drinks Business reported on January 31.
Ivan Menezes, Diageo’s chief executive, went out of his way to say that the world’s biggest premium spirits company “is very keen to get a deal done.”
“We don’t see a material impact for the company as a result of Brexit but we very definitely want a deal and we are working very closely with government and actively supporting the need to get to a deal,” he said.
“Diageo is in a relatively privileged position when I compare us to other industries and sectors in terms of the impact of Brexit for us.
“Our supply chains are more indigenous and simpler. When you think of what we make in Scotland it is water, barley, peat, men, women and lots of time…. so our ability to manage supply chains relative to other industries is very much better.
“Second, our trade with Europe will be tariff free under WTO [World Trade Organisation] conditions.” They will come into force after March 29 if Britain

Mexico: Supreme Court rejects Corona beer maker’s bid for VAT rebate
|
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on January 29 the country's Supreme Court had rejected a bid by the makers of Corona beer for a value-added tax rebate worth billions of pesos, CNBC reported.
"There was going to be a refund of billions of pesos to the company Corona, to the brewer Corona," Lopez Obrador told his regular morning news conference. "The Supreme Court decided that the request was inadmissible," he added.
Corona is made in Mexico by brewer Modelo, a unit of Anheuser Busch InBev NV, a Belgium-based company. In the United States, production of the beer is licensed to Constellation Brands Inc. Lopez Obrador did not give further details.
Modelo said in a statement later in the day that Lopez Obrador's comments referred to processes led by some former shareholders, and not any legal action taken by the company.

UK: Diageo to revive iconic Port Ellen distillery on Islay
|
Drinks giant Diageo plans to revive the iconic Port Ellen Scotch whisky distillery on Islay in an “inspiring celebration of quality, heritage and innovation”, as outlined in proposals revealed on January 29 to the local community, the Insider reported.
The plans, which will be formally submitted to Argyle & Bute Council later this year, were unveiled at a pre-planning consultation event in Port Ellen, giving Islay locals the opportunity to view the proposals.
The community was invited to view the plans at the consultation event and to share their memories and artefacts relating to the historic distillery.
Diageo said the tight-knit community on Islay is intrinsically woven into the life of the island’s famous distilleries, with almost everyone connected either directly or through friends and family with the Scotch whisky industry. Former employees of Port Ellen were amongst those invited along to share in the distillery revival plans.
In October 2017, Diageo announced a £35 million investment programme to bring back Port Ellen on Islay and Brora distillery in Sutherland, both of which closed in 1983.
Since then the company has embarked on an additional £150m investment programme in Scotch whisky tourism which will create a global flagship visitor experience for Johnnie Walker scotch whisky

The Czech Republic: Budvar’s output rises last year to second-highest level in its history
|
Beer production at Budvar, which has been in a long legal dispute with U.S. giant Anheuser-Busch over use of the "Budweiser" brand, increased last year to the second highest level in the brewer's 123-year history.
Budejovicky Budvar NP, a Czech state-owned brewery, said on January 31 that its output rose 3.6 percent in 2018 to 1.602 million hectolitres (42.32 million gallons).
The output growth followed a 4-percent decline in 2017 that was caused by shifting production to a premium brand.
Budvar says its revenues hit a record high last year, reaching 2.6 billion crowns ($114 million), up 7.3 percent from 2018. Other financial results, including profit and export figures, have not been released.

Zimbabwe: AB InBev to place over $120 mln in unremitted dividends to help reduce pressure on Delta Corporation
|
Delta Corporation's anchor shareholder, AB InBev, will place over $120 million in unremitted dividends and fees in Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) savings bonds thereby reducing pressure on the demand for foreign currency by the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange listed beverages concern, the Bulawayo24 News reported on February 1.
The global brewer has 40 percent shareholding in the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange-listed concern. Delta company secretary Alex Makamure said AB InBev has supported Delta through credit lines for the importation of raw materials since access to foreign currency became limited and continues to provide this support.
"In addition, AB InBev has agreed to place over $120 million due to them in relation to unremitted dividends and fees into RBZ savings bonds in order to reduce the pressure on the demand of foreign currency," he said.
Of that amount, about $95 million is unremitted dividend and the balance caters for fees and other charges, Makamure told Business Times last week.
The beverages concern recently paid out an interim dividend of $0,025 per share. In total, Delta paid $31,7 million as interim dividend.
AB InBev's share of the dividend was about $11 million after taking out the 10 percent withholding tax.
RBZ Savings Bonds were introduced in 2017 to encourage
