Australia: Research shows decline in proportion of Australians consuming alcohol
|
In an average four week period, 67.9% of the Australian population 18 and over consume at least one type of alcoholic drink. This represents a gradual decline over the last five years from 70.1% recorded in 2013. All major categories of alcoholic drinks showed declines in incidence over this period, apart from cider which increased, Roy Morgan Research reported on February 6.
These are some of the latest findings from Roy Morgan’s ‘Alcohol Consumption Currency Report September 2018’ which is based on in-depth interviews conducted face-to-face with over 50,000 consumers per annum in their homes, including detailed questioning of over 15,000 regarding their alcoholic drinking habits.
Wine is consumed by 43.3% of the 18+ Australian population over an average four week period, ahead of beer with 38.4% and spirits on 26.7%. Cider is now consumed by 12.3% which has increased from 10.3% five years ago, making it the only type to increase. The incidence of cider drinkers is now ahead of RTD (11.4%), Liqueurs (7.2%) and Fortified Wine (5.2%).
Over the last five years the biggest decline was for wine (down 1.3% points), followed by RTD (down 0.9% points) and Liqueurs (down 0.8% points). Beer only showed a decline of 0.5% points and

Belgium: AB InBev to invest EUR42 mln in expanding production of Hoegaarden beer
|
Over the next two years, AB InBev will invest 42 million euros in the expansion of its bottling plant in Hoegaarden, Belgium. In this way, the world's biggest brewer hopes to support the wheat beer's international success, the Retail Detail Europe reported on February 5.
"Hoegaarden's popularity and worldwide volumes grew by no less than 35% in the last five years. The extra investments are the result and a nice reward for Hoegaarden, our Belgian beer that is making a beautiful journey worldwide," says brewery manager Karen Rombaut.
The new line should become operational by early 2020. The capacity expansion offers more possibilities for the international delivery of beer from the brewery in Hoegaarden.
The plans are part of AB InBev's long-term strategy, with a focus on the global growth of the Hoegaarden beer brand. The success of the wheat beer now means more investments are returning to the original production site near Leuven, Belgium. In the last few years, the strategy had been rather to reduce investments as sales had been on the decline.

Japan: Court dismisses Sapporo Breweries’ tax refund request
|
A Japanese court dismissed on February 6 a lawsuit filed by Sapporo Breweries Ltd. demanding a liquor tax refund of 11.5 billion yen ($105 million) paid for a beer-like alcoholic beverage, The Mainichi reported.
Sapporo Breweries began selling Goku Zero in June 2013 as a "third-category" beer-like beverage with a lower liquor tax rate than regular beer and happoshu low-malt beer. It suspended shipments the following year because tax authorities said the beverage might fall under another category.
Sapporo Breweries changed its production process and resumed sales of Goku Zero as a happoshu beer in July 2014. The company later sought the return of 11.5 billion yen paid in additional liquor tax after determining the original product was in fact a third-category beer.
On February 6, the Tokyo District Court concluded that Goku Zero cannot be categorized as a third-category beer after studying data on its manufacturing process.
The court did not disclose which data its ruling is based on, at the request of Sapporo as the company fears its trade secrets may be leaked.
The court's decision well reflected the government's view, the National Tax Agency said, while Sapporo said it will examine the ruling before deciding how to respond.

UK: AB InBev scraps connection charges for small brewers
|
Budweiser and Stella Artois brewer AB InBev has launched new line fees, which are claimed to be fairer than those already on the market and which involve scrapping charges for small producers, The Morning Advertiser reported on January 31.
The announcement, revealed exclusively to The Morning Advertiser, follows Heineken’s charging restructure last year, where a one-off payment of £145 was scrapped in favour of ‘pay-as-you-go’.
AB InBev, which is the world’s largest brewer, launched the new system as part of its Raising the Bar programme, which it claims is fairer.
In pubs and bars where AB InBev is the lead brewer, smaller drinks companies will not pay connection fees to dispense drinks on draught and will remain eligible to use the brewer’s cooling and pouring systems.
Large non-leading brewers will continue to pay a one-off connection fee of £145, a charge agreed by Brands Dispense Association members.
“Other brewers have recently announced changes to the system, which would see the one-off connection fee of £145 replaced with monthly line charges of £10.50,” said AB InBev.
“This charge would be applied across all drinks companies. Should the provider not pay, the publican will then be invoiced at £13.50, with this change coming in on 1 April

USA: Heineken expanding Dos Equis Mexican Pale Ale to off-premise in select states
|
Heineken is expanding its Dos Equis Mexican Pale Ale to the off-premise in select US states after several months trialling the beer in on-premise accounts, FoodBev.com reported on February 1.
The beer is described as a traditional pale ale but with a Mexican twist and is said to have a hint of spicy heat on the finish.
It will be available in select US states in 12-pack bottles and cans and six-pack bottles as of February.
Heineken said it is targeting consumers who drink both mainstream and craft beers and who seek easy-to-drink craft varieties made by reputable brands they know.
Dos Equis brand manager Lindsay Certilman said: “Dos Equis is putting a fresh and interesante spin on product innovation. When we think pale ale, we think IPA. With the use of citrus hops and peppers, Dos Equis is taking the pale ale brewing process and adding a Mexican twist that delivers a fresh, subtly spicy taste.
“Off-premise distribution is a playground for beer enthusiasts to experiment with new brews, and thus offers us a perfect opportunity to engage with beer lovers looking for an interesting play on tradition.”
With off-premise distribution and marketing efforts focused in the core Dos Equis markets of Texas and New

Indonesia & Russia: Bali Hai Brewery launches its Panther Black stout in Russia
|
Homegrown beer producer PT Bali Hai Brewery Indonesia has introduced its new Panther Black stout to Russia, where alcohol consumption is among the highest in the world, The Jakarta Post reported on January 16.
Bali Hai export manager Bharat Velecha said Russia was a strategic partner for the company, as alcohol consumption in the country was predicted to increase.
“The Russian Federation is a strategic partner for Bali Hai Brewery Indonesia to continue to expand our export portfolio. This is also in line with our spirit to innovate and explore by developing a unique beer that is accepted by the international market,” Bharat said as reported by kontan.co.id.
Bali Hai found that its products were sold in the majority of supermarkets in Primorsky Krai, located in the far east of Russia.
“What’s special is that this year we will start exporting Panther Black [to Russia], which has just been launched in Indonesia,” he said.
Bali Hai said the beer was made up of four types of malt and its recipe had been inspired by Australian rock band AC/DC. Bharat said the strong beer was expected to appeal to alcohol consumers in eastern Russia.
According to data from the Ministry of Industry, exports of alcoholic beverages in

UK & India: UK Secretary of State signs order for extradition of Vijay Mallya
|
In a massive success for Indian investigating agencies, UK Home Secretary on February 4 cleared the decks for extradition of the embattled liquor baron Vijay Mallya. He will face trial for charges of fraud and money laundering amounting to an estimated Rs 9,000 crore, Business Today reported.
The order for Vijay Mallya's extradition to India has been signed by UK Secretary of State Sajid Javid, as per UK government sources, TV news channels reported.
"On 3 February the Secretary of State, having carefully considered all relevant matters, signed the order for Vijay Mallya's extradition to India," a UK Home Office spokesperson quoted as saying.
According to media report, the 62-year-old Mallya has 14 days to appeal in the higher court against the order.
Commenting on the development, Arun Jaitley, who is currently undergoing treatment in US, said it was another step to get Mallya home.

World: AB InBev fully acquires rating site RateBeer.com
|
ZX Ventures, a division of AB InBev, now has fully acquired popular rating site RateBeer.com, the Beer Street Journal reported on February 4.
In a forum post, the site revealed that ZX Ventures now has full ownership of the website. In 2016, ZX Ventures took a minority stake in RateBeer, only for it to be revealed by the founder in 2017. This prompted some craft brewers to ask RateBeer to delete their rating’s data, out of fear of manipulation by Anheuser-Busch.
According to the site’s founder, this new capital will not affect the day-to-day of the website.
“RateBeer is a quality-focused organization, and our value to the community has always depended on our integrity, and willingness to put in greater effort to produce more meaningful scores and information,” the official announcement says.
While RateBeer has stated repeatedly that AB InBev does not influence the beer ratings, one user ironically found the highly ranked beers nearby to be questionable.

Canada: Barley trade quiet due to bitter cold
|
The barley trade in Canada has been quiet in the last few weeks as the prairies have suffered from bitter cold temperatures with most regions recording -30°C, CMBTC reported on February 1. However, snowfall levels have been extremely low in some regions of the prairies which is a concern, particularly in three areas:
• Southern Alberta (the area south of Calgary)
This region has been abnormally dry. There is a lack of snow and there has been very little in the manner of precipitation this winter. The constant mix of high winds that persistently blow through this region combined with above normal temperatures earlier this winter have not been favorable for soil moisture conditions. This is on the back of two consecutive drought years, and as a result there is reason to be concerned for farmers in the Lethbridge region.
• Saskatchewan
The Regina corridor to Saskatoon and areas surrounding Regina are a concern, as they had been dry going into winter and have received below normal snowfall.
• Manitoba
The Brandon region and the southwest corner of the province remain a concern, as this area has received below average snow fall and were already drier than normal last summer.
There is no doubt that the above

Australia: Hopco’s two new hop varieties sold out in fifteen hours
|
Fifteen hours after announcing the arrival of two new hop varieties onto the Australian market, Tasmania-based hop broker Hopco put up the ‘sold out’ sign, the Australian Brews News reported on February 5.
The two new Kiwi hop varieties, called HORT9909 and HORT4337, have been cultivated by New Zealand Hops in collaboration with the Plant and Food Research Institute New Zealand.
Still part of the Institutes’ extensive breeding program, HORT9909 and HORT4337 will continue to go by their horticultural names as they enter this next extensive brewery trial phase.
Hopco Manager Jon Burridge told Brews News that HORT9909 and HORT4337 are expected to land in Australia in about two to three weeks’ time.
Burridge said that while Hopco didn’t have a big volume of either hop, the company still sold out within 15 hours. Burridge said he apologises to those that have enquired after the new varieties but missed out.
“We hope to get more from the 2019 harvest happening in March, which will be landing in Australia in late April early May,” he said.
Burridge said that the hops that have been ordered will be dispatched to breweries almost immediately, with beers exhibiting the new varieties expected to be out in the market in seven

USA: Constellation Brands acquires minority stake in Black Button Distilling
|
Victor, NY-based Constellation Brands announced on February 5 that it had acquired a minority stake in craft spirits maker Black Button Distilling, whose production facility and tasting room is on Railroad Street near the Rochester Public Market, the Democrat & Chronicle reported.
The investment was made through Constellation’s venture capital group that invests in premium, emerging brands in categories that provide strong scalability, consumer appeal and a unique niche in the market. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
"This is a great day for Black Button," said Jason Barrett, head distiller and president of Black Button Distilling. "We’re going to be able to make more of our spirits, get them in more people’s hands and spread them farther afield."
Black Button will remain an independent company, Barrett said. It will continue to manage, produce, market and sell its award-winning spirits such as its Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Citrus Forward Gin, seasonal Lilac Gin and Bespoke Bourbon Cream.
A working relationship between the two companies dates back to the beginning of Black Button, Barrett said. Constellation Brands allowed Black Button to run tests on equipment the small distillery couldn't afford, and Black Button has done a few small projects for Constellation Brands.
Barrett compared the relationship
