USA, CA: Sierra Nevada Brewing to buy 100% of Sufferfest Beer Company
|
Sierra Nevada Brewing announced in a press release on February 4 that they will acquire 100% of Sufferfest Beer Company, stating “shared values, commitment to innovation, and common goals” as the foundation of the partnership.
Sierra Nevada is one of the largest craft breweries in the world, and has been a leader when it comes to industry collaboration, with massive projects like Beer Camp and Resilience IPA, but this is their first acquisition. Some other large craft breweries have begun acquiring smaller outfits. Most notably, Oskar Blues is part of the private-investor-funded CANarchy Collective, which has acquired a handful of breweries in the last few years to create a brewery collective.
Sufferfest launched in 2016, founded by a long distance runner who was looking for a healthier post-run beer. The brand quickly made a name for itself by producing a gluten-free, low calorie Kolsch (with bee pollen!) and a pale ale that used salt and black currant. They now have five beers in their lineup.

USA, AZ: Female-owned and operated Greenwood Brewing coming to downtown Phoenix
|
Roosevelt Row will welcome Greenwood Brewing this fall as the female-owned and operated brewery brings its pints and brews to downtown Phoenix, the Downtown Devil reported on February7.
The location, which will be Greenwood Brewing’s first permanent brewery, will be located on Fifth Street and Roosevelt, between the already existing Eye Lounge and MADE Boutique. Along with the brewery, Greenwood Brewing will have a tasting room inside Eye Lounge to bring more business to the gallery, allowing it to be open every day instead of only weekends.
“It’s going to be located in the parking lot to the west of the Eye Lounge gallery and MADE building,” said Greg Esser, the vice president for the Roosevelt Row Community Development Corporation. “We’re going to do a small renovation to the existing building and build a new building that will house the brewery that is now the parking lot.”
The collaboration came about when Greg and his wife Cindy Dach, the owner of MADE Boutique, were looking for ways to help the Eye Lounge and MADE grow and thrive.

USA, CA: 3 Disciples Brewing Co. opens in Sebastopol
|
A month after one downtown brewpub abruptly closed, another taproom has opened to compete in the ultra-competitive Sonoma County craft beer market, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reported on February 6.
3 Disciples Brewing Co. started tapping beers over the weekend north of Old Courthouse Square on Mendocino Avenue in Sebastopol. The brewpub, adjacent to the Tipsy Taco and Cantina restaurant, has nine of its beers on tap, from the ubiquitous India pale ales to an imperial stout aged in rye whiskey barrels.
“It was gangbusters,” co-owner James Claus said of the opening.
Claus and his partners, Matt Penpraze and Luke Melo, have built their brand over five years through word of mouth at local taprooms throughout the county. The brewery has been operating a small production space in Sebastopol where Claus has refined his beers and earned four medals at last year’s notable local Battle of the Brews competition.
“The big advantage for doing beer festivals is driving traffic to your taproom. We have been kind of missing out on the opportunity,” Claus said. “It only made sense to have a taproom.”

USA, VA: Starr Hill Brewery to launch in Richmond by this summer
|
Starr Hill Brewery announced they are opening a beer hall & rooftop patio this summer in Richmond, WSET reported on February 6.
The new Starr Hill Beer Hall & Rooftop will be at 2406 West Leigh Street and will feature a 10-barrel brewing system and five American white oak foeders.
The system allows Starr Hill to brew almost 50 different batches of ales, lagers and wild beers each year between all locations.
“With the new pilot brewery and foeders in Richmond, there will be nearly no limit to our ability to experiment with different styles, including juicy, hazy IPAs, fruited brett sours, rich stouts and delicate pilsners and lagers,” says Brewmaster Robbie O’Cain in a statement they released on their website.
The brewery part of the new location is 4,500 square feet with a 1,000 square foot deck outside.
The Rooftop bar and beer garden is available to all beer drinkers and has a great view of the Richmond skyline.
You will be able to visit the Beer Hall seven days a week starting this coming summer 2019.

USA, OH: Briar Brown Brewing Company to hold grand opening on February 16
|
A.R. Winery has expanded its business beyond wines and has recently added craft beers to its drinking menu, The Daily Advocate reported on February 6.
A.R. Winery’s new brewery, Briar Brown Brewing Company, will debut Brown Ale, Hefeweizen, Scotch Ale & Black IPA at its grand opening from noon-9 p.m. Feb. 16.
Individuals are invited to come on out to sample beers in beer flights, pints or purchase a growler to take home. There will be raffle drawings for glasses, T-shirts and free pizzas throughout the day along with a 10 percent discount on all wood fired brick oven gourmet pizzas.
The business is located on the farm at 3564 Gordon Landis Road in Arcanum between state routes 49 and 571.

USA, WA: Urban Family Brewing to move to Ballard’s booming brewery district
|
According to the City of Seattle’s boundaries, there are currently 13 breweries in the Ballard neighborhood, plus one brewery’s satellite tasting room. On top of that, another brewery and tasting room (the new Reuben’s Brews Brewtap) opens in March, the Washington Beer Blog reported on February 5.
From Hale’s Ale Brewery and Bad Jimmy’s Brewing on the eastern border, to Peddler Brewing and Lagunitas Brewing near the heart of downtown Ballard, the neighborhood that is so lousy with breweries is about to get at least one more. Urban Family Brewing just announced its plan to move it’s brewery from Magnolia across the Ballard Bridge to the cozy confines of Ballard’s booming brewery district.
The plan will see Urban Family Brewing’s beer production begin in Ballard this summer, with the new taproom’s opening slated for later in the year. Among other things, the move allows the brewery to expand production with the installation of a new 20-barrel brewhouse. It will also provide guests with a more spacious taproom featuring a large outdoor seating area. USA, OR: Burnside Brewing Company closes for good
|
Burnside Brewing Company abruptly hit the dust on February 5, closing operations and laying off all its employees, The Portland Mercury reported.
The brewpub, located at 701 E Burnside, Portland opened in 2010 and was initially noted for the unorthodox ingredients in its beers, such as their Oatmeal Pale Ale and Lime Kölsch. Over the years, it became known for its successful IPA and a ubiquitous canned lager, Couch Select Lager.
An internal memo, presumably to employees, was posted to the internet on February 4. "Effective Tuesday February 5th, Burnside Brewing is no longer operational. It is not certain that we will be able to make payroll this Friday, wages WILL BE PAID AS SOON AS POSSIBLE," the message read. "Please move forward with filing unemployment claims, we will be in touch with paycheck information as soon as we are able. If you have any personal belongings in the building, contact [redacted] or [redacted]. Sincerest of thank you [sic] for your character, time and efforts."

EU: Malting barley prices come down again
|
European malting market prices came down again, being affected by lower feed barley and wheat markets, GrainCom reported on February 8.
French co-ops sold again lots of feed barley, price lost around € 20/tonne in a short period of time.
New crop malting barley prices are also a bit lower, in sympathy with old crop prices.
Some brewers and maltsters are slowly coming back to the market, and some business in winter and spring malting barley took place, mostly for crop 2019, industry sources reported.

Japan: Kirin to beef up whiskey production in Japan
|
Kirin Co. said on February 7 it will beef up whiskey production in Japan to address its short supply amid the popularity of highball, or whiskey mixed with soda, Jiji Press reported.
An affiliated whiskey maker in the central prefecture of Shizuoka will invest some 8 billion yen to double the production capacity of unblended whiskey and increase the capability to house whiskey barrels by 20 pct. The expanded production will start in June 2021.
The move came after a decision by Kirin, a unit of Kirin Holdings Co., to stop selling a domestically produced whiskey brand, Fuji Sanroku Tarujuku Genshu 50, last year, due to a shortage of unblended whiskey.
In a similar move, Suntory Spirits Ltd., a unit of Suntory Holdings Ltd., has suspended shipments of its mainstay Hakushu 12 Years Old and Hibiki 17 Years Old whiskey brands.

India: Karnataka government decides to increase taxes on beer
|
That pint of beer is set to become more expensive as the State government has decided to increase taxes on Bengaluru’s most popular alcoholic beverage. Chief Minister Kumaraswamy, in his budget speech, announced that the additional excise duty levied on beer will be increased from 150% to 175%, while that on draught beer is set to rise from 115% to 150%, The Hindu reported on February 8.
Excise duty on low alcoholic beverages is up from ₹5 to ₹10 per bulk litre, while the additional excise duty is up from 122% to 150%.
Manu Chandra, Chapter Head, Bengaluru, National Restaurants Association of India, said that this would make things more expensive for the consumer. “However, it’s unlikely to affect consumption patterns as people have their preferences,” he said. He noted that the Karnataka government was taxing excise heavily and it was becoming increasingly expensive to buy alcohol in the State.
A visit to the local micro-brewery will also get more expensive as the State government has decided to increase both excise and additional excise duty on beer brewed in microbreweries. Excise duty will increase from ₹5 to ₹10 per bulk litre, while additional excise will go up from ₹12.50 to ₹25 per bulk
