20 years ago, the International Hop Standards Committee
(IHSC) was founded to take care of the production,
release and maintenance of HPLC calibration standards
for use in the quantitative determination of various bitter
components in hops, hop products and in beer. The new
standard for humulinones was prepared with the help of
John Paul Maye, Bob Smith and Jeremy Leker. The validation
procedure included a collaborative HPLC study in
which the prospective new standard was crosschecked
against a high purity, DCHA-humulinones standard. So

World: Molson Coors reports 2018 results

Molson Coors Brewing Company reported on February 12 its results for the 2018 full year and fourth quarter.
Molson Coors president and chief executive officer Mark Hunter said:
"We accomplished much in 2018, delivering strong free cash flow and meeting our deleverage commitments, restoring underlying EBITDA growth in the quarter and second half, premiumizing our portfolio across regions including launching Truss our Canadian cannabis beverage JV, scaling volume and profitability in our fast growing International business and continuing to strengthen our European business. Through the year we further scaled our cost saving program which insulated us in part from the effects of weaker industry demand in North America, higher than anticipated input inflationary pressures and challenges associated with the implementation of our U.S. brewery supply chain system."
Mark continued, "We enter 2019 with a U.S. commercial plan focused on mix and share improvement that is fully resourced and showing early signs of impact against Coors Light, a commercial strategy that is working in Europe and International and continually improving commercial trends in Canada. We are focused on further strong free cash flow delivery and deleverage supported by more than $200 million of cost savings in 2019 and further $450 million across 2020

World: Molson Coors Brewing Co to restate financial reports for 2016 and 2017 due to accounting errors
|
Molson Coors Brewing Co said on Feburary 12 it would restate its financial statements for fiscal years 2016 and 2017 after auditors found accounting errors for income taxes related to deferred tax liabilities, Reuters reported on February 12.
The errors originated from its acquisition of remaining 58 percent stake in MillerCoors LLC in 2016, the company said in a filing with regulators, adding that its impact will not be material.
After restating, the financial results for fiscal 2016 will reflect an increase in Molson Coors’ deferred tax liabilities and deferred tax expenses by $399.1 million, which in turn will pull down its net income and earnings per share.
For fiscal 2017, the restatements will reflect a reduction to deferred tax liabilities and deferred tax expense of $151.4 million, and a corresponding increase in net income and earnings per share.
Separately, the beer company also reported lower-than-expected quarterly sales for the fourth quarter, sending its shares down about 6.5 percent to $61.16 in early trading.

USA: Alcohol producers fight to save expiring tax breaks

A coalition of alcohol producers, including Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors, are turning up the heat on Congress to make permanent new tax cuts they won as part of the 2017 tax overhaul, Bloomberg Tax reported on February 11.
The 2017 law gave beer, wine, and spirits producers a two-year federal excise tax reduction worth $4.2 billion—with the deepest cuts going to small domestic brewers, whose tax rates were halved to $3.50 from $7 per barrel on the first 60,000 barrels.
The benefit is set to expire at the end of 2019, and brewers, cider makers, vintners, and distilleries are intent on maintaining it.
“Now it’s our time to go back up to the Hill and show them this was a great idea,” said Jim McGreevy, president and CEO of the Beer Institute, which represents both large and small brewers.
At the very least, the coalition—which includes other trade groups like the Brewers Association, WineAmerica, the Wine Institute, the Distilled Spirits Council, the American Craft Spirits Association, and the U.S. Association of Cider Makers—want the tax breaks extended.
But the industry prefers that they be made permanent, so producers have the certainty for making long-term business decisions.

India: Craft brewer B9 Beverages almost doubles losses in FY2018

B9 Beverages, the maker of Bira craft beer, almost doubled its losses to Rs 101 crore in FY18 as it bolstered nationwide marketing to boost sales five-fold in a crowded market dominated by mainstream brands such as Carlsberg and UB’s Kingfisher, the Economic Times reported on February 12.
Sales at B9 Beverages climbed to Rs 161 crore from Rs 32 crore in FY17, in which the company had reported a net loss of Rs 55 crore, data sourced from research platform Veratech showed.
Since its launch about four years ago, the company has managed about a 5% share in key markets despite the dominance of Kingfisher, AB Inbev’s Corona and Budweiser, and Carlsberg, which together control 80%.
“We expect to break even in India business in FY21," said Ankur Jain, founder of B9 Beverages that raised $50 million from Brussels-based investment firm Sofina a year ago.
The beer segment expanded 6% to 2771.5 million litres in 2018, according to GlobalData forecast. But India still favours strong beer brands that have an 80% share, and global companies have been producing stronger variants of their flagship beer brands, a segment where Bira has no presence at all.

Nigeria: Big brewers competing for Nigerian consumers

Gigantic billboards advertising beer now dominate the skyline of Nigeria's megacity, Lagos, signalling the escalating battle between multinational brewers for drinkers in Africa's most populous country, the Daily Nation reported on February 10.
So far it's a largely untapped market, with Nigerians consuming on average just nine litres (around 16 British pints) of beer a year, well below South Africans' 57 litres, according to market research firm Euromonitor.
But with more than half of Nigeria's 190 million people aged under 30 — and the population expected to grow to 410 million by 2050 — the world's biggest beer companies are looking to elbow in.
For years, Nigerian Breweries has dominated the sector with brands including Gulder, Star and top-of-the-range Heineken.
However its iron grip on the market is under threat from mega-brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev.
It recently opened a new factory outside Lagos and launched Budweiser to face off against Heineken, in a fierce contest for millennial drinkers being played out across Africa.
Promotions have become an arms race among the beer companies as they host concerts, fashion weeks and boat parties to win over customers.
Restaurant and club owners say they are being courted by the beer companies with unprecedented amounts of cash.

Zimbabwe: Government reported to be subsidizing beer in Zimbabwe
|
The permanent secretary in the Ministry of Finance, George Guvamatanga, reportedly questioned in a meeting of Heads of Ministries, why the government subsidizes beer in Zimbabwe, the Pindula News reported on February 10.
The information was provided by Nick Managwana, the Information Ministry perm sec through his Twitter account.
Guvamatanga, who is also the former Barclays Zimbabwe managing director, apparently called for unpopular decisions to be made by the government.
Mangwana reiterated on his Twitter that these are not direct subsidies for Delta Beverages’ products but procurement subsidies for ingredients used in the production of beer products.

UK: Carlsberg UK to launch a “new, better: Carlsberg Danish Pilsner
|
Carlsberg UK is set to launch a “new, better” Carlsberg Danish Pilsner variant, in a move designed to “improve the consumer drinking experience and minimise its environmental impact”, the Talking Retail reported on February 12.
The variant will be available from 1 March in:
Small packs – 6x330ml snap pack cans, 4x500ml cans, 4x568ml cans and 4x330ml bottles
Medium packs – 10x330ml cans, 15x330ml cans and 12x330ml bottles
Large packs –18x440ml cans and new 18x330ml bottle packs
The new formula will have the same 3.8% ABV but has been “re-brewed from head to hop to deliver a smoother, fuller mouth-feel and a perfect balance of bitterness and sweetness”.
The new packs will feature a new font, a cap that removes oxygen from the bottles and environmentally friendly ink.
The launch will be supported by a multi-million pound investment including a TV, digital and out-of-home advertising campaign running from April.
Consumer research from Carlsberg found that the new Danish Pilsner has driven a significant shift in perceptions, with 68% of UK lager drinkers suggesting they prefer the taste of Carlsberg Pilsner to the current UK number one mainstream lager.
It said the preference for pilsner was most significant among younger and more affluent consumers.
