FILTRATION BEHAVIOUR OF HOP PARTICLES FOR EFFICIENT DRY HOPPING
ABSTRACT
Most breweries have gained a lot of experience in dry
hopping, knowing which set up for dry hopping leads
to a certain dry hop flavour, mostly using a solid-liquid
separation technique. A group of German Researchers
look into the properties of hop filter cakes and the
relevant operational parameters for the separation
of hop particles from beer. With the aim that these
findings may directly help breweries reduce the
duration of dry hopping while increasing the product
yield. The considerable swelling volume of hop pellets
is favourable for aroma extraction due to the surface
area increase of the primary particles. Swelling of the
pellets at higher temperatures accelerates this step as
well as disintegration. However, performing filtration
at higher temperatures can reduce the permeability
remarkably, thus justifying cold extraction. Given the
compressibility of the hop filter cake, low operating
pressures are also beneficial. If yeast cells are present,
the pressure drop rises, so the operational parameters
might need to be adjusted. Just as in real life, good dry
hopping requires a lot of compromises…

New Zealand: New Zealand boasts of 4.56 breweries per 100,000 people
|
New Zealanders are a right bunch of hopheads, with more commercial breweries per capita than the US, UK or Australia, Stuff.co.nz reported on February 18.
A survey of the industry by the Brewers Association counts 218 breweries, making for roughly 4.56 breweries per 100,000 people.
That compares to just 3.04 breweries per 100,000 people in beer-mad Britain, 2.1 per 100,000 in Australia, and 1.96 per 100,000 in the US.
The brewing boom, and explosion in choice, was turning New Zealand into a beer tourism destination, said Dylan Firth, executive director of the Brewers Association.
"Kiwi beer is also contributing to our growing tourism market, with NZ$242 million being spent on beer by international visitors," said Firth.
"This is unsurprising as New Zealand has a growing reputation internationally as a beer tourism destination."
Tourism has not driven the brewing boom, however. Changing tastes of domestic beer-drinkers, who are drinking less, but higher quality, beer, was behind the country's brewing renaissance.
From the grain to the glass, the brewing industry was now worth NZ$2.3 billion in the year to March 2018, Firth said, with the numbers calculated by New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER).

Azerbaijan: Carlsberg Azerbaijan reports successful 2018
|
In 2018, Carlsberg Azerbaijan continued to grow in all sales channels, which became possible due to the growth of the beer market in the country, Trend News Agency reported on February 18.
In 2018, the company's shipments increased compared to 2017 thanks to a stabilization of the macroeconomic environment in the country, favorable weather conditions and key projects aimed at improving efficiency and increasing sales volumes. It is also worth noting the positive impact of the increase in tourist flow to the country in 2018.
The company showed growth in volumes and market share in all sales channels. Thus, the growth of market share in the traditional trade channel (small shops) was +1.1%, in the modern trade channel (large chain supermarkets) +2%, and in the on-trade channel (pubs, restaurants) +7%.
Carlsberg Azerbaijan brewery is located in Khirdalan, 10 kilometers from the capital of Azerbaijan. The production capacity of the plant is 800,000 hl per year, the company employs about 250 people directly and about 400 indirectly (distributors, agencies, contractors). Japan: Four leading brewers intensify sales war over third-tier beer
|
Japan’s four largest brewing companies are intensifying their sales war over low-cost “third-tier beer”, The Japan News reported on February 18.
With a hike in the consumption tax rate looming in October that is expected to make consumers more budget-conscious, there has been a spate of new product releases and re-releases of old ones.
Asahi Breweries Ltd. released its newest third-tier beer — “Gokujo Kireaji” — at the end of January. The beverage is made with barley spirits and the company’s advanced fermentation technology in an effort to approximate the taste of regular beer.
While attending a sales event with actress Ryoko Yonekura, who has appeared in television commercials for the beverage, Asahi President Shinichi Hirano said the company aimed to sell 3 million 20-bottle cases per year.
The four companies expect to sell 397.5 million cases in the beer category overall this year, a 1.9 percent increase over last year’s sales.
This comprises 193.1 million cases of regular beer, a 1 percent increase; 48.8 million cases of low-malt beer, a 2 percent decrease; and 155.6 million cases of third-tier beer, a 4.3 percent increase.

Nigeria: Nigerian Breweries sees 2018 turnover decline 4.1%
|
Nigerian Breweries, 56% owned by international brewery group Heineken, is to be monitored this week on the Nigerian stock exchange. The company ended last week with a 3.75% rise on the exchange but it later published not so positive 2018 results, the Ecofin Agency reported on February 18.
Its turnover that year was NGN350.3 billion ($960 million), representing a 4.1% decrease compared with the 2017 results when it is adjusted to the new IFRS 15 accounting standard. Nigerian Breweries explains that this new standard has a different approach for calculation.
This led to an increase by NGN21.4 billion of the initial 2017 turnover (that was finally NGN365.8 billion against NGN344.5 billion initially).
The logical outcome is a decrease by 35.4% and 41.1% of its operating income and net profit respectively despite reduced expenses.
For shareholders, the final dividend for the 2018 fiscal year will be NGN1.83 per share, 41.5% lower than the NGN3.13 received for the 2017 fiscal year.

USA: AB InBev to release Bud Light Lemon Tea
|
Anheuser-Busch (AB InBev) is preparing to release Bud Light Lemon Tea after its new labelling received approval from the federal authorities, the Drinks Insight Network reported on February 20.
The new label describes the product as ‘lager brewed with real lemon peels and aged on tea leaves with natural flavours’. It was approved by the federal Alcohol Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau for 25oz cans and 12oz bottles.
AB InBev listed all 12 of its US breweries in the application.
Similarly to previous Bud Light extensions such as Bud Light Lime and Bud Light Orange, Bud Light Lemon Tea will be offered with 4.2% alcohol-by-volume (ABV).
According to the company’s website, the Bud Light line extensions use hop extracts, including orange, lime, platinum and chelada extra lime.
Shipments of Bud Light are reported to have dropped by 6.7% in 2018, despite the success of Bud Light Orange, which was released last year. According to Beer Marketer’s Insights, it was the largest percentage decline on record.
MillerCoors editorial communications manager Peter Frost said in order to get the brand back on track, AB InBev seems to be taking a two-pronged approach; continue filling its distribution pipeline with line extensions and go after its competitors.

Kazakhstan: Barley crop up 20.2% to record volume last year
|
According to official information of the Statistics Committee of Kazakhstan, total production of grains and pulses in the country was around 20.3 mln tonnes in 2018, or 1.5% less than in 2017, UkrAgroConsult reported on February 19.
The 2018 grain crop decline was accounted for mostly by a 5.8% drop in wheat production, to 13.9 mln tonnes. On the other hand, as UkrAgroConsult analysts had forecast, a substantial rise is observed in the barley crop, by 20.2% to a record 4 mln tonnes.
At the same time, despite a 6% decline in the 2018 wheat harvest, grain exports from the country hit new highs this season. The current level has been achieved at the expense of both record barley supplies and rising exports of wheat. However, a slowdown is observed in flour shipments to foreign markets.

China & Uruguay: China allows imports from barley from Uruguay
|
China has allowed imports of corn and barley from Uruguay starting this month, two separate notices from the General Administration of Customs said.
Barley from Uruguay that meets quarantine requirements can be imported from Feb. 15, the first notice said. Uruguayan corn can enter China from Feb. 18, according to the second customs notice.
The new trade move came as Beijing pushes to diversify imports amid rocky trade relations with its major grains suppliers, including the United States and Australia.
It also imposed a 25 percent tariff last July on a list of U.S. products, including corn and sorghum, two other major animal feed ingredients, in response to similar moves by Washington.
Beijing and Washington have resumed talks following a trade truce agreed on by leaders from the two countries on December 1, but China’s hefty penalties on U.S. grains cargoes remained, effectively curbing trade.
Beijing also approved corn and barley imports from Kazakhstan in late November last year.

World: Report says acquisition of Pernod Ricard by LVMH and Diageo is "a likely scenario"
|
According to a new report by Berenberg analysts, a consortium-led acquisition of Pernod Ricard by LVMH and Diageo is "a likely scenario", the Hospitality Ireland reported on February 19.
The report stated that LVMH "could take the lead in a potential bid", with such a transaction potentially bringing about the end of a joint venture that LVMH and Diageo have had since 1987.
Such a deal could bring Irish drinks brands such as Guinness and Jameson under a single corporate umbrella.
LVMH is estimated by Berenberg to have almost $40 billion in resources for takeovers, meaning that a joint purchase of Pernod would "make sense" from both a financial and regulatory point of view, according to Berenberg analyst Zuzanna Pusz.
The Irish Independent quotes Pusz as saying, "An efficient split of brands between LVMH and Diageo should overcome any regulatory hurdles that such a deal would face."
