FILTRATION BEHAVIOUR OF HOP PARTICLES FOR EFFICIENT DRY HOPPING
ABSTRACT
Most breweries have gained a lot of experience in dry
hopping, knowing which set up for dry hopping leads
to a certain dry hop flavour, mostly using a solid-liquid
separation technique. A group of German Researchers
look into the properties of hop filter cakes and the
relevant operational parameters for the separation
of hop particles from beer. With the aim that these
findings may directly help breweries reduce the
duration of dry hopping while increasing the product
yield. The considerable swelling volume of hop pellets
is favourable for aroma extraction due to the surface
area increase of the primary particles. Swelling of the
pellets at higher temperatures accelerates this step as
well as disintegration. However, performing filtration
at higher temperatures can reduce the permeability
remarkably, thus justifying cold extraction. Given the
compressibility of the hop filter cake, low operating
pressures are also beneficial. If yeast cells are present,
the pressure drop rises, so the operational parameters
might need to be adjusted. Just as in real life, good dry
hopping requires a lot of compromises…

USA: Boston Beer Company returns to growth in 2018

Boston Beer Company officially returned to growth in 2018, Brewbound reported on February 21.
The nation’s second largest craft beer company — which makes Samuel Adams, Angry Orchard, Twisted Tea, and Truly Hard Seltzer, among other offerings — posted double-digit growth in depletions, shipments and sales last year, according to an earnings report released on February 20.
Boston Beer’s net revenue increased 15.4 percent, to $995.7 million, for the 52-week period ending December 29. The company said it shipped nearly 4.3 million barrels of product in 2018, up from about 3.8 million barrels in 2017 and 4 million barrels in 2016.
Additionally, Boston Beer reported similar growth in depletions (+13) and shipments (+13.7) for the full year, attributing its depletion growth to non-beer offerings Truly Hard Seltzer (the company quietly dropped “Spiked & Sparkling” from the name), Twisted Tea and Angry Orchard brands. Nevertheless, volume declines continued for its Samuel Adams line of craft beers.
In the same report, Boston Beer announced fourth-quarter earnings, which were highlighted by an 11 percent increase in depletions for the 13-week period ending December 29. The company reported a 9.2 percent increase in net revenue, to $225.2 million, which it attributed to a 6.3 percent increase in shipments.

USA, FL: 3 Sons Brewing Company to open to public on February 24
|
Dania Beach's 3 Sons Brewing Company will open to the public with a party this Sunday, February 24, according to the brewery's announcement on social media February 20.
Dubbed the "Lumberjack Leftovers Pop-Up," the party will serve pizza along with beer from several breweries from noon to 8 p.m.
The brewery is known for a variety of beers, including its Summation bourbon barrel-aged imperial vanilla coffee stout, although it said many of them won't be ready for Sunday's opening. One of the beers, Ocean Park Pilsner, will be available February 24, according to a statement.
"We’re dying to open our doors but must practice patience, as the beer in our fermenters are not quite ready," the announcement read. "So, here’s a chance to come check us out and get a little taste of the glory. Just to see what it tastes like... See you Sunday!!"
The brewery will also serve beer from out-of-town breweries including Bottle Logic and Mikerphone brewing companies, and local breweries like Tank Brewing Company and Tripping Animals Brewery.

USA, NY: 18th Ward Brewing to open in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn

The owners of two Williamsburg bars, Jimbo Slims and Northern Bell, are about to open a brewery and beer pub across the street from concert venue Brooklyn Steel in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the Commercial Observer reported on February 19.
The new venue, 18th Ward Brewing, will open next month at 300 Richardson Street with a selection of six beers, a limited bar food menu and cocktails, according to its owners. Partners Jordan and Jim Beldner and Michael O’Brien inked a five-year, 2,000-square-foot lease last year for retail space in the bottom of the building at the corner of Debevoise Street, a couple blocks south of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Asking rent in the transaction wasn’t disclosed. But the landlord, Pasquale Pescatore, did grant a six-month rent concession for the buildout of the space, according to broker Jill Pescatore of Worth Property Group (who happens to be the landlord’s daughter-in-law). The deal also includes options to extend the lease an additional 10 years.
Although 300 Richardson was a warehouse, the landlord successfully converted the upstairs portion to six residential loft units. Two-bedrooms in the building are currently listed for $3,750 per month, according to StreetEasy.

USA, FL: RockPit Brewing already open in Orlando

A new coal-country themed brewery, taproom and homebrew store opened for business at noon on Feb. 14. RockPit Brewing is located behind Cecil’s BBQ in Orlando’s SoDo District and the 5,000 sq ft facility is planning to grand open in March, Brewbound reported.
RockPit Brewing is the sixth brewery to open in the Orlando area in the last six months. Microbreweries have created quite a buzz in Central Florida in recent years, and RockPit Brewing promises to bring even more fresh flavor to the scene. RockPit’s tagline is Adamantly Anomalous Ales, a perfect description of their fun and experimental brewing style.
This locally owned business is the first microbrewery in Orlando to operate a homebrew supply store on premise. Not only does RockPit sell everything you need to brew a batch of beer, but the company also plans to host regular homebrew competitions in collaboration with the local homebrewer’s group, Brewers Anonymous.
RockPit Brewing plans to have plenty of collaborations with their neighbors (ice cream and beer pairing anyone?) and they have already partnered with neighbor Cecil’s BBQ to bring the taproom food. USA, OH: Cartridge Brewing Co. coming to Kings Mills soon
|
Developers have long viewed the historic Peters Cartridge factory in Kings Mills as a building worthy of a second life.
Looks like that vision is about to take shape in the form of a brewery, Cincinnati.com reported on February 20.
Cartridge Brewing Co. announced on its social media platforms that it will help to restore the Peters Cartridge factory to “its former glory as a gathering place for the Kings Mills community.”
A full-service kitchen and a brewhouse dedicated to a variety of taproom beers and special bottle releases will be part of the new brewery that will open in 2019, according to the Cartridge Brewing Facebook page.
The brewery will be the first of many new tenants to the old factory, located along the Little Miami Bike Trail at 1415 Grandin Road. The buildings will be transformed for mixed use which will include a commercial and retail component along with apartments, according to Matt Schnipke, deputy director of the Warren County Port Authority.
The county and the Port view this project as a “blessing,” he said. The former industrial site had environmental issues, which have been addressed. There are also infrastructure issues which made redevelopment as an industrial site unlikely, Schnipke said.

UK: Craft brewery openings slow down in 2017

More than 430 new craft breweries opened in the UK throughout 2017, down from a record 520 the previous year, according to the latest statistics from HMRC, The Drinks Business reported on January 28.
A total of 430 new breweries opened in the UK in the year ending 31 December 2017, as craft beer increases its market share in pubs and supermarkets, says UHY Hacker Young, the national accountancy group.
This compared to an average opening rate of just 100 per year in 2009, but nevertheless represents a slowdown from 2016, which saw a record 520 new brewery openings, reflecting fears that independent brewers “have been hit by rising ingredients costs caused by a slump in the pound”.
Another challenge lies in securing funding and investment, with many breweries relying on crowdfunding and selling shares to set up their businesses, with high street banks typically reluctant to lend to craft breweries as most do not fit their risk profile, says UHY.
