Mexico: Grupo Modelo set to launch world’s second-largest brewery in terms of volume
|
The brewer of Corona beer is set to begin operating its eighth brewery in Mexico, the Mexico News Daily reported on March 5.
Grupo Modelo, owned by Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch InBev, has invested 14 billion pesos (US $726 million) in the new plant, located in Apan, Hidalgo.
The plant’s initial production will be as much as 1.2 billion litres of beer but it has the capacity to produce twice that amount, which would make it the second largest brewery in the world in terms of production volume.
AB InBev executive Carlos Lisboa said during an inauguration ceremony on March 4 that “the magic begins in the farmland and in our breweries. Starting today, not only will the best barley be harvested in Hidalgo, but the best beer will be produced here.”
Several of the company’s brands will be produced in Apan, including Corona, Stella Artois and Michelob. “I have no doubt that Hidalgo will become the land of beer,” said Lisboa.
Sixty per cent of the barley the firm purchases in the Altiplano region — the large plateau that occupies much of northern and central Mexico — is produced in Hidalgo.
The company also has breweries in Coahuila, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Oaxaca, Sinaloa, Zacatecas and Yucatán.

Australia: Australian brewers turning to LATAM markets
|
In the past five years, craft beer has gone from a niche interest to one of the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry’s most profitable sectors. Beer may be in maturation, but a craft beer reinvention that’s packed with flavor, clever branding, and premium appeal has helped to boost sales around the world, and give the alcohol industry food for thought, Best in AU reported on March 5.
Typically brewed by independent and traditional brewers, the global craft beer market is now worth an eye-watering US$38,183 million and expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 14.1% between 2019 and 2023. As such, brewers around the world are increasing their distribution networks, investing in marketing and entering into new territories to sell their beer worldwide, with Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States key drinkers.
With consumers happy to pay a premium for craft beer for its exotic or unusual flavour and unique branding, firms are tapping into lucrative markets with large middle classes, willing to splash the cash on a delicious drink. One of those markets is Latin America, with a range of trade agreements, growing demand and experience making it a favourite amongst exporters.

Ethiopia: New 1.6 mln hl brewery coming to Ethiopia
|
Built with an investment of 1.5 billion birr (around $53.1 million) Kangaroo Plast, a local company, is set to introduce a new brewery to Ethiopia market, the New Business Ethiopia reported on March 5.
The new factory has the production capacity of 1.6 million hectolitres and 800,000 hectolitres of packaging capacity per year, according to Ephrem Yirga, Board Chairman of United Brewery and Kangaroo Plast.
“We used the most advanced technology of the industry. We used the technology of a well-known machine manufacturing German company known as Krones. The company has solely done all the manufacturing and installation of the machines from A to Z,” he said, indicating that the whole production system is fully integrated with SAP technology with modern waste management and treatment plant.
“…We have also allocated enough budgets to undertake corporate social responsibility activities benefiting the societies and the environment around the brewery… We are so lucky to find a high quality ground water, which doesn’t need that much treatment. Modgo is a very strategic location for us to easily access Addis Ababa market as well as the central part ad south eastern markets of the country,” he says.

Indonesia: Brewer PT Delta Djakarta denies report on Jakarta administration acquiring additional shares in it
|
Beer firm PT Delta Djakarta has denied a report that the Jakarta administration has acquired additional shares in the company, the Jakarta Post reported on March 2.
"Since the beginning, the Jakarta administration’s share in PT Delta Djakarta has been unchanged at 26.25 percent. There has been no increase,” Delta Djakarta president commissioner Sarman Simanjorang said as quoted by kompas.com on March 1.
The Indonesia Stock Exchange said on Feb. 25 in a report that the administration's shares in the company had risen by nearly 3 percent, from 23.33 percent to 26.25 percent.
Delta Djakarta produces various brands of beer, such as Anker, Carlsberg and San Miguel.
According to Sarman, the IDX report, which highlighted the apparent increase in the administration's shares, was the result of a merger between the administration and another shareholding unit owned by the administration, Equity Investment and Management Board (BP-IPM Jaya).
The administration controls 23.34 percent shares, while BP-IPM Jaya 2.91 percent.
Following BP-IPM Jaya’s dissolution, the shares automatically went to the administration.
During the 2017 gubernatorial election campaign period, Jakarta Governor Anies promised to sell the city’s stake in the beer company, citing that its ownership in the company did not contribute to the livelihood of Jakartans.

UK: Carlsberg aims to take a slice of the premium market
|
Retailers should site the newly-rebranded Carlsberg alongside more premium lagers, as the supplier takes measures to challenge the perception that the brew is an “old man’s beer”, betterRetailing reported on March 5.
Speaking at the re-launch of the brand in London, Liam Newton, vice president of marketing at Carlsberg, said it wanted to stop consumers comparing it to brands like Carling and Foster's, and instead see it on the same level as Amstel and Coors Light.
To achieve this, for the first time in over 20 years, it has changed the recipe and relaunched as Carlsberg Pilsner with an ABV of 3.8%.
“We acknowledge the fact that over the years, we have slipped in maintaining the best quality,” he admitted, adding: “The standard lager category has been a tough place to trade in, so to boost sales, we had to make the brew and packaging more appealing.
"Eighty-four per cent of shoppers are trading up and prepared to pay more, and we want to tap into this.”
Lynsey Woods, the company’s director of marketing, said in addition to the reformulation, it is introducing a new stem glass, which will be available to independent retailers in the coming months.

World: AB InBev chairman to step down
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV Chairman Olivier Goudet is stepping down to focus on his roles as managing partner and chief executive officer at JAB Holding Co., Bloomberg reported on March 5.
Goudet will resign at AB InBev’s shareholder meeting on April 24, the beer company said in an emailed statement.
“The board’s succession plan has been developed since last year and we have been working with Mr. Goudet on a smooth transition,” the company said. “His successor, along with new members of our board, will be announced in due course in the context of our annual shareholders meeting.”
Earlier, the Financial Times reported that Goudet was departing because of concerns of a conflict of interest, related to JAB’s 2018 acquisition of Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. in an $18.7 billion deal.
Goudet’s departure from AB InBev - the world’s largest beer company - illustrates the growing market sway that JAB has accumulated. The investment company, which counts the billionaire Reimann family among its backers, has gone on an acquisition spree in recent years, including restaurant chains such as Pret a Manger and Panera Bread Co.

Romania: Ursus Breweries launches unpasteurized Ursus Tank beer
|
Ursus Breweries, the biggest beer producer in Romania, is launching Ursus Tank, the unpasteurized fresh beer which, through a new technology in Romania, is delivered in a very short time directly from the factory, the Business Review reported on March 6.
The beer arrives in the 24-hour factory at the selected partner locations (pubs, bars, restaurants) where beer tanks are installed and can thus provide customers with a non-pasteurized and freshly-produced Ursus Tank beer.
“This innovation brought by Ursus Breweries on the beer market in Romania allows us to put the essence of beer to its full potential: that “subtle” thing, quite difficult to describe but easy to recognize, called “freshness of taste”. How is this possible with your tank beer? Clear, freshly filtered and unpasteurized beer is transferred from the factory production line directly to the consumer locations via mobile tanks specifically developed for this transfer. Once in tanks in locations, beer is ready for consumption. Russia: Anti-Doping Agency no longer allowing athletes to drink beer and test for doping
|
The Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) is no longer allowing athletes to drink beer and test for banned substances, the Yahoo Sports reported on March 1.
Russian anti-doping agency deputy CEO Margarita Pakhnotskaya told the Associated Press athletes would drink a post-race beer to help their dehydrated bodies produce a urine sample for drug tests. Alcohol suppresses the production of an anti-diuretic hormone, meaning the body produces more urine than it normally would.
Now, Pakhnotskaya said, they will have to drink water to help aid the process due to “aggressive” athletes and the impact on the test results.
"It is not very good for athletes' behavior at doping control, politeness and following the rules," she told the AP. "They'd be rude, a bit aggressive."
She told TASS, the Russian News Agency, track and field athletes were the ones most likely to drink beer before tests.
Per the AP, the agency found that pre-test beer can interfere with the results of the “athlete biological passport” program. Initiated by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the objective of the “athlete biological passport” is to monitor variables of an athlete’s body that will over time show the effect of doping. Australia: Barley Australia gives malting barley accreditation to new variety RGT Planet
|
The Board of Barley Australia has announced the successful accreditation of RGT Planet as a malting barley variety.
RGT Planet was submitted by Seed Force and accredited as malting barley following the evaluation trials conducted in association with the Malting and Brewing Industry Barley Technical Committee (MBIBTC) assessment under the Barley Australia malting barley evaluation process.
RGT Planet was entered into the program as a high yielding spring barley with a robust agronomic profile. It is most suited to producing malt for brewers with a high fermentability and thus will be well matched for many domestic and export markets.
As with all previous accreditations, it is the market that will determine the success of this new variety. The Barley Australia malting barley evaluation and accreditation process is recognised as the required standard for the determination of malting barley for all new Australian malting barley varieties.
