Brewery news Mexico: Grupo Modelo set to launch world’s second-largest brewery in terms of volume
The brewer of Corona beer is set to begin operating its eighth brewery in Mexico, the Mexico News Daily reported on March 5.

Grupo Modelo, owned by Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch InBev, has invested 14 billion pesos (US $726 million) in the new plant, located in Apan, Hidalgo.

The plant’s initial production will be as much as 1.2 billion litres of beer but it has the capacity to produce twice that amount, which would make it the second largest brewery in the world in terms of production volume.

AB InBev executive Carlos Lisboa said during an inauguration ceremony on March 4 that “the magic begins in the farmland and in our breweries. Starting today, not only will the best barley be harvested in Hidalgo, but the best beer will be produced here.”

Several of the company’s brands will be produced in Apan, including Corona, Stella Artois and Michelob. “I have no doubt that Hidalgo will become the land of beer,” said Lisboa.

Sixty per cent of the barley the firm purchases in the Altiplano region — the large plateau that occupies much of northern and central Mexico — is produced in Hidalgo.

The company also has breweries in Coahuila, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Oaxaca, Sinaloa, Zacatecas and Yucatán.

Brewery news USA, MI: Gonzo's BiggDogg Brewing LLC to merge with the Saugatuck Brewing Company
Gonzo's BiggDogg Brewing LLC announced the brewery will merge with the Saugatuck Brewing Company of Douglas, MI, to become the newly-minted Saugatuck Brewing Company – Kalamazoo, WWMT-TV reported on March 3.

After receiving government approval, the Saugatuck Brewing Company will have operational management over Gonzo's in the brewery's current Kalamazoo location.

“We’re excited to be entering into this new market and be serving our beers along with other great breweries and craft beer bars in the Kalamazoo area,” Megan Scheerhorn, Vice President of Marketing at Saugatuck Brewing Company, said in a statement. “This is a great opportunity for us to grow as a company and continue the legacy of making great beer at this location for the people of Kalamazoo.”

The Saugatuck Brewing Company stated that all current Gonzo's employees were welcome to continue working under new management, and that the bar would continue to offer an extensive food menu.

Several of the popular Gonzo's specialty beers, including the popular Vanilla Porter, would also stay on the menu, in addition to adding new Saugatuck-specific brews.

Current Gonzo's Pint Club Memberships would also be honored under the brewery's new management.

“We are excited for this merger!” says Paul Nowaczyk, member of Gonzo’s BiggDogg Brewing LLC. “As ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: True Anomaly Brewing Company debuts in Houston
True Anomaly Brewing Company has debuted at 2012 Dallas St. in EaDo, Houston, Hoodline reported on March 1.

This brewery was founded by former NASA co-workers who wanted to open a brewery focused on sour beer, according to Eater Houston. It is slated to officially open at the end of April, but for now the spot offers four beers on tap. Food trucks are often on site, and the outdoor patio is dog-friendly.

With a five-star rating out of three reviews on Yelp so far, True Anomaly Brewing Company seems to be a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

Tim S., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on Feb. 24, wrote, "Unique, dog-friendly offering in EaDo, a place you need to visit as a local or visitor to Houston. Belgium Dubbel is a good start to your evening, along with a pick up of food from nearby vendors."

And Christina H. wrote, "Great beer and a nice, chill atmosphere. The owners are awesome and will tell you all about the current beers they have on tap. It's dog friendly and has indoor and outdoor space. Great location to stop in for a beer before or after a Dynamo, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Catawba Brewing planning to match last year’s output of at least 40,000 gallons this year
Catawba Brewing CEO Billy Pyatt never expected a home-brew kit — a gift from his wife, Jetta — would grow into a thriving business with four breweries and distribution in five states, the Business North Carolina reported on March 1.

“Even though we’ve been doing this 20 years, every day is new and fun,” he says.

That home-brew kit appealed to Pyatt’s engineering background — the N.C. State University grad worked at Corning for nearly 30 years — as he tweaked his processes. Soon, the Marion native and his brother, Scott Pyatt, were brewing 15 gallons of beer in their driveway two or three times a month.

Morganton-based Catawba incorporated in the mid-90s but didn’t sell its first beer until summer 1999 after they acquired all the necessary brewing equipment, Pyatt says. In recent years, Catawba has expanded to Asheville and Charlotte.

In 2019, the brewer plans to surpass the 115 beer styles it created last year and match last year’s output of at least 40,000 gallons, ranking it among the state’s top 10 craft breweries based on production. Each location will host a celebration this summer to mark the 20-year milestone, Pyatt says, and Catawba will release a line of anniversary beers brewed ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Pooles Island Brewing Company opens its doors in Baltimore County
A new brewing company launched on Friday, March 1 in Baltimore County, CBS Baltimore reports.

Pooles Island Brewing Company opened at 11695 Crossroads Circle near White Marsh.

The 10,000 square-foot brewery features a 3,200-square-foot tap room.

“Cenosillicaphobia means the fear of an empty glass,” said head brewer Patrick Jones. “It is my job to make the goods available to fill it, whether it is light, dark, sweet or hoppy. Hopefully everyone’s fears will be dashed on a continuous basis.”

The brewery will employ 10 people within the year.

“Our goal is to create a brewery that is respectful to the various traditional styles as well as push the limits of the creativity, explained Roger Bedard, General Manager of Pooles Island Brewing Company. “Our taproom will be inviting, relaxing and a place where you will want to spend an afternoon.”

Brewery news USA, MA: Medford Brewing Company on its way towards building a brewery of its own
Medford Brewing Company is finally on its way towards building a brewery of its own in its namesake city. Founded in 2015, the company is the work of co-founders Nick Bolitho and Max Heinegg, who combined their business and beer knowledge to turn a home brewing passion into a full-scale operation, the Eater Boston reported on February 28.

Now, after about two years of contract brewing, the company has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help establish a permanent location, and in doing so, to build out Medford’s first brewery and taproom. Though Medford’s neighboring towns — including Everett, where Bolitho and Heinegg have been contract brewing at Down the Road Beer Company — are rife with breweries, Medford does not have one of its own. But when Bolitho and Heinegg founded Medford Brewing Company in 2015, they were determined to one day open a taproom there.

To that end, the partners set up their Wefunder campaign to raise money for two potential scenarios: One option would see a larger facility built out in West Medford, while the other could bring a smaller operation to Medford Square. According to Bolitho, this will depend on how much Medford Brewing can fundraise.

Either way, the brewery ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Paw Paw Brewing opens larger brewpub in Paw Paw
Amidst changes occurring in the local craft beer industry, Paw Paw Brewing has opened a newer, larger brew pub at 780 S. Gremps St. in Paw Paw, having outgrown its previous location, wkfr.com reported.

According to a story on MLive, the new location is one part of its 22,000 sq. ft. brewing facility, and significantly larger the previous Michigan Ave. pub which was only 1,000 sq. ft. Paw Paw Brewing founder Ryan Sylvester estimates the new brew pub space is four times the size of the previous one. It will allow Paw Paw Brewing to double the number of draught beers on tap.

In the story, he says the plan is to offer open air and covered seating in the summer months. Given its location, this Paw Paw Brewing site is somewhat reminiscent of Perrin's Brewing in Comstock Park.

Also coinciding with the move, Paw Paw Brewing says it will again begin to can beers, which it hasn't done in four years.

Whisky news USA, MI: Pabst Brewing Co. jumps into distilling
Pabst Brewing Co. appears to be jumping into the spirits product category with the help of a West Michigan brewery and distillery, MiBiz reported on March 1.

New Holland Brewing Co. received federal label approval for a Pabst-branded whiskey last month, suggesting that the Holland-based company will serve as the contract distiller for the product.

The “Pabst Blue Ribbon Whiskey” label, submitted by New Holland Brewing President Brett VanderKamp on Dec. 21, makes mention of Jacob Best, who in 1844 founded the company that went on to become Pabst Brewing Co.

VanderKamp, in response to an emailed inquiry from MiBiz, acknowledged the label, but deferred to executives at Pabst, whom he said were leading the project.

Executives from Pabst and a Pabst spokesperson acknowledged a request for more information, but declined to offer any more details.

“We are just not quite ready yet as several details [are] still up in the air,” spokesperson Alastair Duncan said in an email to MiBiz, noting the project “is quite a big thing for the brand.”

Typically, breweries and distilleries submit labels for approval to the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) weeks or months ahead of product launches. The TTB was one of ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Storm Brewing looking for new home in Vancouver
Sky-high real-estate prices aren't just affecting residential renters in Vancouver — the city's booming craft beer industry is also finding itself priced out, CBC.ca reported on March 4.

Local beer legend Storm Brewing, one of the city's longest running craft breweries, has joined the ranks of those looking for a new home in Vancouver.

"The building just got sold for a lot of money — like, C$6.5 million," said James Walton, Storm's founder and head brewer.

Walton's 25-year rental lease is almost up, and going back into the rental market after more than two decades is no easy feat.

"Everything is really expensive now, it's mind boggling," he told Stephen Quinn, the host of CBC's The Early Edition.

"I'm going to have to pay twice as much as I'm paying now."

Storm, which is located in an industrial area of East Vancouver, is not the only business being priced out in the area, Walton said.

He says he's not sure what will happen if even industrial areas are growing out of reach for businesses.

"I see lots of closed doors because no business can afford to service that amount of debt," he said.

"I guess [we'll see] more upscale things, things that make more money, or turn it all ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Australian brewers turning to LATAM markets
In the past five years, craft beer has gone from a niche interest to one of the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry’s most profitable sectors. Beer may be in maturation, but a craft beer reinvention that’s packed with flavor, clever branding, and premium appeal has helped to boost sales around the world, and give the alcohol industry food for thought, Best in AU reported on March 5.

Typically brewed by independent and traditional brewers, the global craft beer market is now worth an eye-watering US$38,183 million and expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 14.1% between 2019 and 2023. As such, brewers around the world are increasing their distribution networks, investing in marketing and entering into new territories to sell their beer worldwide, with Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States key drinkers.

With consumers happy to pay a premium for craft beer for its exotic or unusual flavour and unique branding, firms are tapping into lucrative markets with large middle classes, willing to splash the cash on a delicious drink. One of those markets is Latin America, with a range of trade agreements, growing demand and experience making it a favourite amongst exporters.

Brewery news Ethiopia: New 1.6 mln hl brewery coming to Ethiopia
Built with an investment of 1.5 billion birr (around $53.1 million) Kangaroo Plast, a local company, is set to introduce a new brewery to Ethiopia market, the New Business Ethiopia reported on March 5.

The new factory has the production capacity of 1.6 million hectolitres and 800,000 hectolitres of packaging capacity per year, according to Ephrem Yirga, Board Chairman of United Brewery and Kangaroo Plast.

“We used the most advanced technology of the industry. We used the technology of a well-known machine manufacturing German company known as Krones. The company has solely done all the manufacturing and installation of the machines from A to Z,” he said, indicating that the whole production system is fully integrated with SAP technology with modern waste management and treatment plant.

“…We have also allocated enough budgets to undertake corporate social responsibility activities benefiting the societies and the environment around the brewery… We are so lucky to find a high quality ground water, which doesn’t need that much treatment. Modgo is a very strategic location for us to easily access Addis Ababa market as well as the central part ad south eastern markets of the country,” he says.

Brewery news Indonesia: Brewer PT Delta Djakarta denies report on Jakarta administration acquiring additional shares in it
Beer firm PT Delta Djakarta has denied a report that the Jakarta administration has acquired additional shares in the company, the Jakarta Post reported on March 2.

"Since the beginning, the Jakarta administration’s share in PT Delta Djakarta has been unchanged at 26.25 percent. There has been no increase,” Delta Djakarta president commissioner Sarman Simanjorang said as quoted by kompas.com on March 1.

The Indonesia Stock Exchange said on Feb. 25 in a report that the administration's shares in the company had risen by nearly 3 percent, from 23.33 percent to 26.25 percent.

Delta Djakarta produces various brands of beer, such as Anker, Carlsberg and San Miguel.

According to Sarman, the IDX report, which highlighted the apparent increase in the administration's shares, was the result of a merger between the administration and another shareholding unit owned by the administration, Equity Investment and Management Board (BP-IPM Jaya).

The administration controls 23.34 percent shares, while BP-IPM Jaya 2.91 percent.

Following BP-IPM Jaya’s dissolution, the shares automatically went to the administration.

During the 2017 gubernatorial election campaign period, Jakarta Governor Anies promised to sell the city’s stake in the beer company, citing that its ownership in the company did not contribute to the livelihood of Jakartans.

Anies also said ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Carlsberg aims to take a slice of the premium market
Retailers should site the newly-rebranded Carlsberg alongside more premium lagers, as the supplier takes measures to challenge the perception that the brew is an “old man’s beer”, betterRetailing reported on March 5.

Speaking at the re-launch of the brand in London, Liam Newton, vice president of marketing at Carlsberg, said it wanted to stop consumers comparing it to brands like Carling and Foster's, and instead see it on the same level as Amstel and Coors Light.

To achieve this, for the first time in over 20 years, it has changed the recipe and relaunched as Carlsberg Pilsner with an ABV of 3.8%.

“We acknowledge the fact that over the years, we have slipped in maintaining the best quality,” he admitted, adding: “The standard lager category has been a tough place to trade in, so to boost sales, we had to make the brew and packaging more appealing.

"Eighty-four per cent of shoppers are trading up and prepared to pay more, and we want to tap into this.”

Lynsey Woods, the company’s director of marketing, said in addition to the reformulation, it is introducing a new stem glass, which will be available to independent retailers in the coming months.

The rebrand also hopes to recruit ...More info on site

Brewery news World: AB InBev chairman to step down
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV Chairman Olivier Goudet is stepping down to focus on his roles as managing partner and chief executive officer at JAB Holding Co., Bloomberg reported on March 5.

Goudet will resign at AB InBev’s shareholder meeting on April 24, the beer company said in an emailed statement.

“The board’s succession plan has been developed since last year and we have been working with Mr. Goudet on a smooth transition,” the company said. “His successor, along with new members of our board, will be announced in due course in the context of our annual shareholders meeting.”

Earlier, the Financial Times reported that Goudet was departing because of concerns of a conflict of interest, related to JAB’s 2018 acquisition of Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. in an $18.7 billion deal.

Goudet’s departure from AB InBev - the world’s largest beer company - illustrates the growing market sway that JAB has accumulated. The investment company, which counts the billionaire Reimann family among its backers, has gone on an acquisition spree in recent years, including restaurant chains such as Pret a Manger and Panera Bread Co.

In November, AB InBev and Keurig Dr Pepper debuted a pod-based cocktail machine that works similarly to Nestle SA’s Nespresso coffee ...More info on site

Brewery news Romania: Ursus Breweries launches unpasteurized Ursus Tank beer
Ursus Breweries, the biggest beer producer in Romania, is launching Ursus Tank, the unpasteurized fresh beer which, through a new technology in Romania, is delivered in a very short time directly from the factory, the Business Review reported on March 6.

The beer arrives in the 24-hour factory at the selected partner locations (pubs, bars, restaurants) where beer tanks are installed and can thus provide customers with a non-pasteurized and freshly-produced Ursus Tank beer.

“This innovation brought by Ursus Breweries on the beer market in Romania allows us to put the essence of beer to its full potential: that “subtle” thing, quite difficult to describe but easy to recognize, called “freshness of taste”. How is this possible with your tank beer? Clear, freshly filtered and unpasteurized beer is transferred from the factory production line directly to the consumer locations via mobile tanks specifically developed for this transfer. Once in tanks in locations, beer is ready for consumption. It is kept carefully up to the moment of service, and the tanks in the locations are equipped with a technology that allows optimal temperature maintenance. The beer is optimally preserved and shielded from light all the way, from the “hidden tap” in the ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Barley Australia gives malting barley accreditation to new variety RGT Planet
The Board of Barley Australia has announced the successful accreditation of RGT Planet as a malting barley variety.

RGT Planet was submitted by Seed Force and accredited as malting barley following the evaluation trials conducted in association with the Malting and Brewing Industry Barley Technical Committee (MBIBTC) assessment under the Barley Australia malting barley evaluation process.

RGT Planet was entered into the program as a high yielding spring barley with a robust agronomic profile. It is most suited to producing malt for brewers with a high fermentability and thus will be well matched for many domestic and export markets.

As with all previous accreditations, it is the market that will determine the success of this new variety. The Barley Australia malting barley evaluation and accreditation process is recognised as the required standard for the determination of malting barley for all new Australian malting barley varieties.

Brewery news Russia: Anti-Doping Agency no longer allowing athletes to drink beer and test for doping
The Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) is no longer allowing athletes to drink beer and test for banned substances, the Yahoo Sports reported on March 1.

Russian anti-doping agency deputy CEO Margarita Pakhnotskaya told the Associated Press athletes would drink a post-race beer to help their dehydrated bodies produce a urine sample for drug tests. Alcohol suppresses the production of an anti-diuretic hormone, meaning the body produces more urine than it normally would.

Now, Pakhnotskaya said, they will have to drink water to help aid the process due to “aggressive” athletes and the impact on the test results.

"It is not very good for athletes' behavior at doping control, politeness and following the rules," she told the AP. "They'd be rude, a bit aggressive."

She told TASS, the Russian News Agency, track and field athletes were the ones most likely to drink beer before tests.

Per the AP, the agency found that pre-test beer can interfere with the results of the “athlete biological passport” program. Initiated by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the objective of the “athlete biological passport” is to monitor variables of an athlete’s body that will over time show the effect of doping. It includes panels of markers that look at such patterns ...More info on site
