Brewery news USA, PA: Lavery Brewing Company eyeing summer opening for itssecond location in Erie
Lavery Brewing Company will open a second location this summer in the space currently occupied by the Blue Canoe Brewery and Restaurant, the Erie News Now reported on March 6.

Titusville Community Development Agencies is ending its lease with the Blue Canoe at 113 S. Franklin St. and will instead lease the space and brewing equipment to Lavery Brewing.

Lavery Brewing owner Jason Lavery said he and his staff are excited to expand the brewery into Crawford County for the first time.

Once Lavery takes over operations, the location's name will be changed to The Lager House because the Titusville location will primarily specialize in brewing lagers. Many other popular Lavery beers will also be on tap.

Most of the food menu from the Blue Canoe will carry over with a "Lavery-twist."

Lavery said his intention is to keep all dining and beer-related employees on staff once the takeover is complete.

"It was kind of a no-brainer,” said Lavery. “The brewhouse is already there. The kitchen is already there. It's kind of a turnkey environment, so we get to walk in day one and get to make how we want it to be."

Lavery Brewing will take over July 1. The new brewpub is expected to open ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Scenic Brewing Co. to open its doors on March 15
A replacement for the westside’s family friendly Old School Brewing Co. has announced an opening date for its locally focused restaurant, sports bar, and brewery, Eater Vegas reported on March 6.

Scenic Brewing Co. will open its doors to the 8,879-square-foot space on March 15 at 5 p.m. The brewery sits on the southeast edge of the Desert Inn and Durango Commercial Center, already home to MadHouse Coffee, Sen of Japan, and the Porchlight Grille.

Yet to announce if it will keep the same 24-hour opening hours of its predecessor, the restaurant is also keeping quiet on many of its details, but is currently promising, “locally brewed beer, a specially created local menu, and scenes that will make you want to travel and drink!”

Confidently predicting “an ultimate experience for you beer lovers,” the company is also hinting growlers will be sold for craft beer fans to take home and enjoy.

Brewery news USA, ME: Brewery Extrava announces summer opening
Brewery Extrava is excited to announce the summer 2019 opening of their craft brewery and tasting room in Portland, Maine. It will be located at 66 Cove St. in the burgeoning East Bayside neighborhood, Brewbound reported on March 5.

The ownership team consists of business owners Joe and Charlene Doherty and brewing industry veteran Michael LaCharite. LaCharite, who will serve as Brewery Extrava’s brewmaster, has abundant experience in the professional brewing industry. A Siebel Institute of Brewing Science graduate, he has owned and/or brewed at some of Maine’s most iconic breweries. The Dohertys bring their combined experience in entrepreneurship and small business management. Joe’s has experience in sales, marketing and business development from a previous career at a Fortune 500 company, and Charlene operates a manufacturing business that the couple purchased in 2006.

Brewery Extrava plans to offer both traditional and innovative variations of Belgian and other international beer styles, including mixed fermentation and barrel-aged beers. LaCharite is energized by the opportunity to showcase his brewing skills. “After many years helping other breweries open as a Brewery Consultant, I am very excited to bring my love and passion for brewing beer to this project as an owner and creating an incredible portfolio ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Ratchet Brewery to open second location
In December 2018 Salem's Ratchet Brewery celebrated a year in business. By the time they reach their second anniversary they'll have an additional and much larger brewery up and running, the Statesman Journal reported on March 5.

Co-owners Dan Miletta and William Mary announced this week that they will be opening a second location, complete with a brewpub. The new venture will be located at 990 North First Street, Silverton in the space that, for eight years, was home to Seven Brides Brewing.

Miletta and Mary estimate that they brewed more than 50 different beers within their first year in business. They were considering expanding in Oct. 2018 when Seven Brides announced their plans to close.

At the time, Seven Brides said they would continue brewing and selling beer to wholesale clients, closing only the taproom and retail store. Now, it appears they ceased operations entirely.

The owners of Seven Brides did not respond to requests for comment.

For Miletta and Mary, the chance to lease a turnkey brewery space is an exciting and rare opportunity. They plan to paint and redecorate the taproom to give it the garage vibe consistent with the brewery's name.

Pending permit approvals, they hope to complete ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, AB: Container Brewing coming to Strathcona this summer
There’s a new brewery coming to Strathcona this summer. First timers Dan Webster and Terry Brown have brought in Tim Juul – formerly Head Brewer at Massachusetts’ Fort Hill Brewery – to help develop their dream, Container Brewing, the Scout Magazine reported on March 4.

Opening this summer at 1216 Franklin Ave., Container Brewing will have been five years in the making for Dan and Terry, who sold software and made bicycles (respectively) before jumping off this particular cliff. They got the keys to the building (previously home to Groundwater Hydraulics for 30 years) back in November, 2018.

They’re working with 4,440 sqft in total, which breaks down to 2,800 for production/storage and the rest to a 67 seat lounge spread out on two levels.

Whisky news USA & EU: Suntory Holdings could raise prices of whiskey it sells in the EU
Suntory Holdings Ltd. is considering raising the prices of whiskey products its U.S. subsidiary sells in Europe due to the negative earnings impact from punitive European Union tariffs against the United States, Suntory President Takeshi Niinami was quoted as saying by The Japan Times on March 8.

The EU introduced 25 percent tariffs on U.S. goods, including whiskey, in June last year in retaliation against restrictions on steel and aluminum imports put in force by Washington.

Beam Suntory Inc., a major American distilled spirit maker acquired by the Japanese beverage producer in 2014, sells bourbon whiskey products such as Jim Beam globally.

“We hope to manage price hikes well in April or later,” Niinami said in a recent interview.

Niinami, however, suggested that the company will not increase its prices by more than 10 percent, considering the sluggish European economy and the rising popularity of Scotch whisky thanks to a drop in the British pound.

According to Niinami, Suntory may skip the price hike or change the size of the markup depending on the region.

He also said Beam Suntory aims to grab the largest market share for U.S.-made whiskey by 2025.

By expanding sales of products jointly developed with the help of Japanese technologies, Beam Suntory ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: HopWin's Brewery coming to Bay Shore soon
What started off as a hobby for two brothers-in-law is now turning into a business, Patch.com reported on March 4.

Deer Park resident William Hoppe and Steve Winn, a Bay Shore native, started off brewing beer about 8 years ago using a $25 home brewing kit from Target.

While many were telling the two to open up a business with their beer, they just kept putting it off.

Finally, the two came up with the business while enjoying a drink (beer, presumably) at Tap & Barrel in Smithtown in 2015.

"One day [our wives] were like 'listen you guys are taking 8 to 10 hours a day doing this, unless you're going to be making money, you really can't be doing this,'" Hoppe said.

So now the two with help from their wives, sisters Jennifer Winn and Rhiannon Hoppe, will be opening HopWin's Brewery on 1460 N Clinton Avenue.

The new brewery will be open alongside The Brewers Collective, located right next door.

Despite the growing number of breweries on Long Island, the duo are planning on making theirs stand out using what they call their "split personality system."

The brewery will be making a variety of split batches which means they will make one recipe two different ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Daredevil Brewing Co. to open new brewery in Indianapolis next year
Daredevil Brewing Co. is joining the food hall at the old Coca-Cola plant on Mass Ave., Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Star reported on March 5.

Hendricks Commercial Properties, the developer of the Bottleworks District, has announced that the brewery will have a 70-seat taproom at the north end of the hall, which opens to 10th Street. Called The Garage, the food hall will house vendors, restaurants, grab-and-go stalls, butchers, bakers and grocers, among others.

Known as one of Indy's best makers of craft beer, Daredevil plans to serve J.W.P American Stout, Muse Belgian Golden, Rip Cord DIPA, Vacation Kölsch and carry out. The brewery will open in 2020.

Daredevil started in 2012 in Shelby County before moving to Speedway in 2015. In 2018, it opened a restaurant and taproom in Ironworks Hotel.

Hendricks has made several announcements regarding the first phase of Bottleworks, the $300 million development with 11 acres of entertainment, restaurants, residences, a food hall and hotel along Mass Ave. An entertainment bar with duckpin bowling, foosball, pinball and pingpong will be the first Indiana location for Ohio-based Pins Mechanical Co.

Living Room Theaters, which is based out of Portland, will show a combination of local, international and independent movies in its first ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Pharr Mill Brewing Co. to hold grand opening on March 16
A Harrisburg brewery aims to deliver a neighborhood taproom, with a focus on community, WSOC Charlotte reported on March 4.

Pharr Mill Brewing Co. celebrates its grand opening on March 16. The brewery occupies a 1,800-square-foot space at 105 Oakley Drive in Harrisburg.

It took three tries for owners Alston Richardson and Kevin Bitner to find the right space.

“We started seeing the possibilities of what it could become,” Bitner says.

The longtime friends have invested roughly $400,000 to make Pharr Mill a reality. The name is tied to the town’s historic grain mill.

“We just want a place for people in Harrisburg to relax and come to enjoy themselves,” Richardson says.

Brewery news USA, NY: Braven Brewing Company selling its Brooklyn brewpub
Braven Brewing Company, a craft brewery based in Brooklyn, NY, plans to sell the lease and equipment for its 2,500 sf brewery, bar, and restaurant in the trendy neighborhood of Bushwick. Founded by Marshall Thompson and Eric Feldman, Braven Brewing Company Bar & Kitchen opened in September 2018 but recently closed its doors and ceased brewpub operations due to personal and financial reasons, Brewbound reported on March 5.

“Eric and I are incredibly proud of the brewery, bar, and restaurant we’ve built here and even more proud of the staff who operated it,” says Braven CEO and Co-Founder Marshall Thompson. “We are certain it will be the perfect situation for another brewery or restauranteur looking to open expeditiously in Brooklyn.”

“52 Harrison Place presents a worthwhile opportunity for any F&B operator looking to establish their business in the marketplace, says Jake Quellman of Brick&Mortar, Braven’s real estate broker. “The Braven team has built a most desirable asset; we are confident any purchaser will see its incredible value and appreciate the seamless transition the key money assignment opportunity offers.”

Brewery news Australia: Lion building on a positive year
In the opinion of Managing Director James Brindley, “2018 was a very full year for Lion,” featuring wins at the Australian Liquor Industry Awards (ALIA), along with new launches and campaigns, The Shout reported on March 6.

But 2019 is here and there are new beers to launch and new business to be uncovered. A major trend that Lion has followed and responded to is the effect of health considerations on drinking habits, resulting in the launch of alcohol-free and gluten-free beers.

“Mid-strength is an important category for Lion. With the launch of Heineken Zero last year, and Remedy Kombucha moving into our portfolio, we are very excited to pursue more alcohol-free options this year. We are also about to launch a new Hahn beer, which has been brewed with rice, water, yeast and hops. Hahn Ultra Crisp is a legitimate gluten-free beer, and is certified by Coeliac Australia,” said Brindley.

In 2018, Furphy was rolled out nationally following growth of over 100 per cent and “overwhelming demand from publicans, retailers and drinkers”. In addition, Lion acquired Fourpure (UK) and the contract brewing, sales and distribution rights for Brooklyn Brewery in Australia.

Brewery news India: United Breweries opposes move by banks to sell Mallya assets
Opposing the SBI-led consortium of banks’ plea seeking the restoration of absconding accused Vijay Mallya’s properties, United Breweries (Holdings) Limited —UBHL, or UB Group — on March 5 sought the application’s dismissal. UB submitted its 28-page reply before the special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court, the Times of India reported on March 6.

UB said the plea was not maintainable as the claim for restoration can only be considered during the trial of the case. It said that the property was subject matter of various judicial proceedings. Among the proceedings cited by UB were those initiated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the Fugitive Economic Offenders (FEO) Act. UB said that the banks’ list of properties include those cited by the ED for confiscation under the FEO.

Last month, Mallya was declared a fugitive economic offender and the proceedings on confiscation of properties are pending. The reply also said that in 2017, the Karnataka high court had ordered UB to be wound up as it was unable to pay off debts and an official liquidator was appointed. UB said hence, all the properties and assets were in the custody of the HC since 2012 (when the first plea was moved ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand: Heineken and Bavaria actively promoting non-alcoholic beer
Two Dutch beer brands - Heineken and Bavaria - are actively promoting non-alcoholic malt beverages to secure growth amid the declining beer market in Thailand as consumers become more health-conscious, the Bangkok Post reported on March 7.

On March 6, both brands announced business plans to promote non-alcoholic malt beverages in Thailand's 180-billion-baht beer market, offering health-conscious consumers an option as they try to moderate their alcohol intake.

Maud Meijboom-van Wel, brand development and communication director for Heineken, said the company is launching "Heineken 0.0" in the Thai market in mid-March as it addresses the growing cultural trend of living a balanced lifestyle.

Non-alcoholic malt beverage is a category Thais may not be familiar with, given the market for malt drinks is very niche in Asia. However, the company has seen an upward trend in consumption of low-alcohol drinks, said Ms van Wel.

Heineken 0.0 was introduced in 2017 in the Netherlands, Spain and Germany, followed by the UK and France. The drink is available in 38 markets around the world, including Europe, North America, and Australia. Last year it was launched in Singapore, the first country the drink was sold in Asia.

"Heineken 0.0 was developed to meet the changing needs of consumers ...More info on site

Brewery news Singapore: Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore investing 20% of marketing budget in Heineken 0.0
Nothing beats cracking open an ice-cold one on a sweltering day (or night), made even better when enjoyed in good company.

And for those who don’t drink and often feel left out at such beer-swigging gatherings, low and non-alcoholic (LNA) beers might just be the social lubricant to help them join the crowd.

The latest option is Heineken 0.0 – and Singapore is the first country in Asia to raise a glass to the alcohol-free lager, the Channel NewsAsia reported on March 6.

In fact, teetotalers may be seeing a lot of this latest addition as Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore, the operating company of Heineken, is investing 20 per cent of its marketing budget to convince non-drinkers to have a drink.

Something is brewing but is the foray into LNA beer caused by a drop in Singaporean drinkers?

"We don’t see the alcohol market going down at all and this is not the reason for launching Heineken 0.0," said Andy Hewson, Managing Director of Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore.

The reason is simply that many people don't actually drink beer, and those who do drink more than beer.

"In Singapore, a large portion of the market doesn’t consume alcohol. Among beer drinkers, an estimated 73 ...More info on site
