Brewery news USA: D.G. Yuengling & Son once again recognized as the US’ largest craft beer producer
The Brewers Association released on March 12 its annual rankings of the top U.S. beer companies based on projected 2018 sales volume.

Amongst BA-defined small and independent craft brewing companies – those businesses that make fewer than 6 million barrels of beer annually and are less than 25 percent owned by a non-craft brewer – Pennsylvania’s D.G. Yuengling & Son once again secured the top spot as the largest producer of craft beer in the U.S.

Boston Beer Company and Sierra Nevada Brewing ranked second and third, respectively, and the top seven-ranked breweries remained unchanged versus last year.

The Canarchy Craft Brewery Collective – which consists of Oskar Blues, Cigar City Brewing, Perrin Brewing, Utah Brewers Cooperative, Deep Ellum Brewing, and Three Weavers Brewing – moved up one spot, to eighth, while Stone Brewing fell one spot, to ninth.

Meanwhile, Oregon’s Deschutes Brewery held onto its 10th place ranking. In total, 16 of the top 50 craft breweries maintained their positions, while another six companies shifted ahead one place.

As in previous years, there were a few standout companies that made significant gains.

Cincinnati’s Rhinegeist made the biggest leap forward last year, moving up an eye-catching 11 places (to 28th) from its ranking as the 39th ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Edelbrau Brewing Co. launches in Pittsfield Township
The Ann Arbor area's newest brewery has taken a few years to get off the ground, but some of its beer recipes have been literally centuries in the making, the Concentrate reported on March 6. Edelbrau Brewing Co. owner and master brewer Teo Watson-Ahlbrandt originally anticipated releasing his beers in 2017, but opening his business took longer than expected. He says the brewery had a couple "soft openings" to friends and family with limited hours in January. The 4,300-square-foot production facility and bottle shop officially opened in mid-February at 719 W. Ellsworth Rd., Suite 2, in Pittsfield Township. The brewery focuses on traditional English and German beers, including the currently available Edelbrau IPA and Oat Malt Brown Ale. Watson-Ahlbrandt says the brown ale recipe dates back to the 1850s, derived from the work of beer history blogger Ron Pattinson. "(Pattinson) talked about going into the (British archives), because the old tax records were based around ingredients," Watson-Ahlbrandt says. "At the time, they were concerned about diverting ingredients from the food supply, and beer was considered either a vice or at least not as vital, and was taxed differently than bread. So recipes were more or less spelled out in tax ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: StillFire Brewing to open in Suwanee’s former firehouse
A Suwanee firehouse will soon become a brewery, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported on March 5.

Gwinnett County Fire Station 13, across Buford Highway from Suwanee Town Center, will close in April, allowing StillFire Brewing to move in. The brewery, expected to open in the fall, will be run by longtime Suwanee residents.

The city realized months ago that improvements Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services wanted in Station 13 would simply not fit in the building, said Adam Edge, Suwanee’s downtown development and business manager.

The county is building a new station about two miles from its current location, near the intersection of Buford Highway and Westbrook Road. Suwanee won’t see gaps in fire service during its construction, Edge said.

Once it was clear the fire department would have to move, the Veugeler Design Group expressed interest in turning the building into a brewery, Edge said. The group is run by Randall and Angela Veugeler, who also put on Suwanee Beer Fest and founded Suwanee Magazine.

The city’s downtown development authority is leasing the land and building to StillFire Brewing for three years, with an option to purchase set to kick in at the end of the lease, Edge said. The brewery’s backers will ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Syracuse’s newest brewery Talking Cursive already open
At the new Talking Cursive Brewing Co. in downtown Syracuse, they do more than brew the beer and pour it for customers, NewYorkUpstate.com reported on March 6.

They can talk the talk.

Members of the tasting room staff at Talking Cursive are taking the online beer server course offered through the national Certified Cicerone program. (A cicerone is the beer equivalent of a sommelier for wine). That means they’ll be able to talk about such topics as beer styles, proper serving temperatures and the right glassware, along with the perfect way to pour each glass.

“We’ve been to places where the beer might be good, but the servers can’t talk about it or describe it,” said Patty Brooks, a co-owner of Talking Cursive. “That’s frustrating, and we want to avoid that."

Talking Cursive has its grand opening starting 2:30 p.m. Thursday (March 7) at 301 Erie Blvd. W., next to Cafe Kubal and across from the Niagara Mohawk Building. It’s owned by Patty Brooks, her husband Andrew (the brewer) and their business partner, Susan Kimmel.

It will be the 10th craft brewery operating in the city of Syracuse - it would have been the 11th but Sahm Brewing closed its downtown location in January. There ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Old 121 Brewhouse coming to Lakewood on March 20
Old 121 Brewhouse will open at 1057 S. Wadsworth Blvd. in Lakewood on March 20. But craft beer won’t be the only libation on the menu; the new business also will offer a line of craft sodas, as well as craft-brewed iced teas produced by Denver’s Teakoe Tea, BusinessDen reported on March 7.

“We’ll make our craft sodas here on site, and we’re partnering with Teakoe to round out our nonalcoholic offerings,” co-founder Brett Zahrte said. “Hanging out at breweries is a very social thing to do, but not always do you want to be drinking. So we decided to offer things we think are missing in the marketplace.”

The taproom will offer craft root beer and two varieties of soda made with hops, Zahrte said. Its beer lineup will include a lager, a pale ale, an IPA, a stout, a honey brown ale and an Irish red ale, as well as an English-style mild ale made in collaboration with Berkeley’s The Grateful Gnome Brewery.

Zahrte is in charge of the brewery’s nonalcoholic offerings, including its partnership with Teakoe. Other founding partners include his wife Karla Zahrte, who oversees the financials, head brewer Jason Bailey and partner Eric Gupta.

The group signed a five-year ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Loophole Brewing Services to offer contract brewing services in Holyoke, Massachusetts
Loophole Brewing Services announced on March 6 its plans to open its brewery and taproom at 104 Whiting Farms Road in Holyoke, Massachusetts, Brewbound reported.

The initial iteration encompasses 13,000 sf housing a state-of-the-art brewery as well as a taproom with outdoor seating. Loophole Brewing Services’ mission of “meeting the needs of craft brewers” is central to the planning and design of the operation.

“We saw some of our favorite breweries with small systems simply not being able to keep up with demand. At the same time, they could not expand or relocate due to space or financial constraints,” said Jeffery “Heffe” Goulet, one of three Loophole Brewing co-founders, “We saw an opportunity to support these great breweries, giving them access to the brewing space at the volume they need.”

Loophole’s small batch contract brewing option provides growing regional breweries with a right size option for increased demand, new products, or collaborations among the area’s prominent brewers.

“Loophole is providing a tremendous service by offering additional small batch capacity,” said Jared Methe, co-founder of Rustic Brewing, “It is a game changer to know that our growth doesn’t have to depend on a huge equipment purchase or relocating our brewery.”

Brewery news USA, MN: Falling Knife Brewing Company getting ready to open this year
Beer drinkers of the Greater Twin Cities, say hello to your newest Northeast Minneapolis neighbor: Falling Knife Brewing Company, Brewbound reported on March 7.

Opening in 2019, Falling Knife will brew adventurous and classic beers that are as distinctive in style as the people and culture that makes up this flourishing and historic neighborhood. These world-class beers will meld with the sounds of a curated jukebox, uniquely-designed taproom and the ambience of friends enjoying one another’s company.

Falling Knife Brewing Co. occupies a 7,400-square-foot space with a 20-barrel brewhouse and 149-person full-service taproom, including a dedicated pinball alley. 16 taps will showcase a wide array of beers produced exclusively on premise, and include a spectrum of styles and flavors that will appeal to a multitude of patrons.

“We didn’t realize it at the time, but this project started with listening to bands we love and drinking beer at venues around the Twin Cities.” said CEO Andy Rutledge. “That bond eventually progressed into serious conversations about starting a brewery together, which is now becoming Falling Knife Brewing Company.”

Rutledge is joined by Tom Berg and Dan Herman, both longtime veterans of the beer and service industries. Berg was a nationally decorated homebrewer and BJCP ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Prosper Brewing debuts in North Tonawanda
The wait is over. The brewing industry has officially returned to the Tonawandas with the debut of nano-brewery Prosper Brewing, at 72A Webster St., North Tonawanda, across the street from the Riviera Theatre, Buffalo News reported on March 8.

Owners Kevin Whipple and Tim Berg, natives of the Tonawandas who started home-brewing roughly six years ago, have brewed 11 beers for their taproom, the linchpin of the business. There's no intent to distribute for now, but growlers will be available soon, and canning for crowlers is likely.

"We want to be a local community brewpub," Berg said. "We thought the area needed something like this."

Whipple is pleased with Prosper's full palate of beers, ranging from an approachable pilsner – dubbed Not So Bohemian Pils – to darker brews suited for cold weather such as the Prosper Porter, a Nitro Milk Stout and the Munich Dunkel. Even with Prosper's small three-barrel system, the owners plan to brew a rye stout for St. Patrick's Day and a Belgian strong ale in the future.

Prosper's prices are lower than their local counterparts, with pints ranging from $5 to $6. A flight of four beers is $8. And unlike many of its peers, Prosper will remain open ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Jersey Cyclone Brewing Company finally announces early April opening
Jersey Cyclone Brewing Company has been long (long) “in the works,” and while circumstances have pushed their opening date more than a little bit, their website finally says the Somerset-based craft brewery should finally be opening in early April, the New Jersey Monthly reported on March 7.

Once open, the brewery promises to have a tasting room (construction photos of a long, gleaming bar attest as much), but there aren’t many hints or indications about what kind of beers you can expect (though at least one photo of “experimentation with stout variants” had a barrel-aged stout with chocolate and chipotle).

Brewery news India: Bangalore leading India’s craft beer boom
Bangalore is known as the "Silicon Valley of India" for its concentration of tech startups, but the city is also on the cutting-edge of the country's craft beer boom, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on March 12.

Craft beer is still a tiny part of India's $3 billion beer market, but annual growth is predicted to be in the double digits, spurring a race to woo customers in a country where per capita beer consumption is still below 5 litres.

While major players like Kingfisher and United Breweries are keen to tap the small but fast-growing segment, craft beer remains dominated by a slew of smaller brewers, particularly when it comes to non-bottled sales.

Trends in Bangalore may be particularly worth watching, as the fierce local competition spurs an arms race of flavor, innovation and marketing. According to John Eapen, a local brewing consultant, there are 53 brewpubs in the city while the total number for all of India is around 150.

Eapen sees craft beer as the fastest-growing and most promising segment in the beer sector. "The movement in India is barely over 10 years old. The first brew pub opened in Gurgaon in 2008 and shortly after that in Pune and Bangalore. ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Brewery stocks advance on news of beer prices hike
Brewery stocks advanced on March 12 over a report of a price hike of up to 6.2% effective April 1, The Edge Markets reported.

At 10.33am, Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd's share price rose 14 sen or 0.54% to RM25.88 while Heineken Malaysia Bhd gained 8 sen or 0.35% to RM22.90.

Both counters were among Bursa Malaysia's top gainers in the morning session.

The Edge Financial Daily reported on March 12 that, for the new price list, Heineken has raised the prices of some of its products — per pack — by between 3% and 5%, while Carlsberg has increased the prices of some products between 3% and 6.2%.

"This price hike will be the first since Heineken and Carlsberg raised their prices after the reintroduction of sales and service tax on Sept 1 last year.

"The brewers said the higher prices are due to the continued escalation of prices of raw materials and packaging," said the daily.
