USA: Briess Malt and Ingredients continues to invest in its Wisconsin operations
|
Briess Malt and Ingredients Co. continues to invest heavily in its Manitowoc, Wis., footprint, Craft Brewing Business reported on March 14.
America’s most famous maltsters acquired a large grain processing operation in Manitowoc back in 2014 — about 40 miles from its Chilton campus in Wisconsin. The site was selected as the company’s eighth roaster after more than a year of study and discussion. The expansive Manitowoc operation includes a 244 ft elevator, onsite lab, 4.3 million bushels of storage along the shore of Lake Michigan and rail connection to the company’s Ralston Elevator in Wyoming and two other malting operations in Wisconsin.
In 2015, Briess recommissioned a large malthouse on that Manitowoc property, more than doubling malting capacity. In 2017, the company announced a $17 million expansion of its barley processing and malting facility, including replacing an aging structure and installing a roaster and automated packaging line for the production and packaging of specialty roasted malts. This week Briess announced even more investments in Manitowoc, commissioning additional malthouses and building the Briess Experience Center, a gathering spot to engage with customers and highlight the company’s rich culture.
“The Briess Experience Center will be a space where our customers, partners and employees

USA, PA: Millcreek Brewing Co. being sold to Erie Brewing Co.
|
Millcreek Brewing Co. in Millcreek Township will soon have a new owner, the Tarentum Valley News Dispatch reported on March 11.
The brewpub, owned by Craig Sheehan and Frank Kneidinger, is being sold as of March 31 and will become a new location of the Erie Brewing Co., according to Heidi Sheehan, business manager for Millcreek Brewing.
The business, located in in the former Sportsmen’s Club building, opened in November 2015.
The sale price of the business was not disclosed.
“We wanted this location to go to the next level and we knew that Erie Brewing could do that,” Heidi Sheehan said. “It was a great business, but in order to grow we needed someone who had the ability to move it forward.”
Erie Brewing moved in June 2017 from rented space in Erie’s Veshecco Industrial Park to a 20,000-square-foot brewery and brewpub on Knowledge Parkway at Station Road, near Interstate 90.
Rob Lowther, general manager and one of the owners of Erie Brewing, confirmed that his company has purchased the building and the assets of Millcreek Brewing.
“We have been looking for a westside location for the last couple years,” he said. “A mutual acquaintance put us together. The timing looked good for us and we

Canada, SK: Great Western Brewing Company criticizes federal excise tax hike
|
Saskatoon’s Great Western Brewing Company (GWBC) is criticizing the federal excise tax on beer, saying it hurts the industry in Canada, Globalnews.ca reported on March 14.
Beer prices may rise on April 1 with federal beer taxes set to increase for the third time in 24 months.
GWBC president and CEO Michael Brennan said they will pay $274,000 more this year than the company did just two years ago, on the exact same sales volume.
“Canadian federal taxes on beer are, on average, almost 53 per cent higher today than in the United States, and the federal government keeps pushing prices up year after year after year,” Brennan said in a press release.
The federal tax accounts for one-third of the cost of a typical can of beer in Saskatchewan while production and aluminum comprise the other two-thirds, according to GWBC.
Brennan said the “automatic” tax hikes make it harder for brewers to invest in their employees, products and businesses.
“Our brewery wants to make capital investments to improve production that will, in turn, have positive benefits in our community, but higher taxes hinder that,” Brennan said.
“These federal taxes are too rigid and impact not just our competitiveness, but the industry’s competitiveness as a whole.”
GWBC is

USA, FL: Sideward Brewing Company officially opens in Orlando
|
Sideward Brewing Company has finally opened in Orlando's Milk District, the Orlando Weekly reported on March 11.
The new brewery, taproom and kitchen held a soft opening last week and plans to be open Tuesday through Saturday, 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Sideward Brewing, which is located in a century-old warehouse at 210 N. Bumby Ave., will serve "inventive beer, cider, cold brew, and more," according to a press release.
The venture was founded by Garrett Ward, Mandy Protheroe and Austin Ward. Both Garrett Ward and Protheroe have experience in the local craft beer scene.
Ward, head brewer at Sideward, created award-winning recipes at Red Cypress Brewery and Cask and Larder. Protheroe, who is Sideward's general manager, used to be the bar manager at Redlight Redlight.
"We're gathering some old, some new and some out of the ordinary ideas we think will really surprise our local beer drinkers. But in a good way," Garrett Ward says in a statement.
Sideward's grand opening is planned for Saturday, March 30.

USA, PA: Braeloch Brewing launches in in Kennett Square after prolonged delays
|
After prolonged delays that whetted the anticipation of a curious public, and following several soft openings this winter, the doors of the long-awaited Braeloch Brewing in Kennett Square finally swung officially open this past weekend, and the crowds flowed faster than the beer did, the Chester County Press reported on March 12.
From Friday afternoon to Sunday evening, the new brewpub's parking area was filled in all directions, which subsequently turned Birch Street into a jammed matrix of vehicles and excitement, as hundreds of customers filled the renovated building to capacity. Once inside, customers bellied up to the bar to sample the Blue Hen Gold, Kennett Brown Ale and the 33rd Marc, sample tasty treats from food trucks outside and hear live music all weekend long.
At the entrance of the brewpub, a sign read, “Welcome home.”
“The emotions we've had have been excitement, fear, anger, frustration and back to excitement again,” said Kent Steeves, who owns the brewpub along with his wife, Amy, and Matt and Kathy Drysdale. “It's been a long journey. We signed a lease on this building 22 months ago. It's an old building, so we knew we would have challenges here, but it's been worth the wait.”

USA, PA: Invisible Man Brewing acquires location in downtown Greensburg, eyes opening by early summer
|
Invisible Man Brewing is about to get a lot more visible with a new home in downtown Greensburg, the Tribune-Review reported on March 13.
The brewery, which was announced in September, purchased 132 S. Pennsylvania Ave. this month.
Owners Sean McLaughlin and Stephanie Victor hope to open the brewery and tasting room sometime in late spring or early summer. The pair said they spent months looking at buildings in Greensburg before finding their location, which until recently held the Second Nature furniture store.
“We looked at every building in Greensburg,” Victor said. “We kind of lucked into this spot.”
The building has been recently renovated and has plenty of space for Invisible Man, with a basement for brewing equipment and a spacious first floor for the tasting room.
“We just want to create a place for people to hang out,” Victor said.
Second Nature closed last month.
Invisible Man plans to have a selection of at least five beers to choose from when it opens, running the gamut from stouts to IPAs to Belgians, all created by brewer Ted Mellors.
“Whatever our patrons like, we’re going to supply them,” McLaughlin said.
The tasting room won’t have a kitchen, but McLaughlin and Victor hope to hold events with local food

EU: It may be time to review current barley import tariff scheme in view of Brexit - analysts
|
Terms and timing of the Brexit are uncertain as of today. The U.K. had become a strong and reliable partner in the EU barley and malt business. It brings up the question of whether the whole import tariff scheme should not be revised, the H. M. Gauger GmbH analysts say in their latest report published earlier this month.
The analysts remind that the EU barley and malt markets are protected by import duties of EUR 93,- for barley and EUR 131,- for malt, with barley tariff-rate quota (TRQ) of 300 thousand tonnes for all origins and 635 thousand tonnes for Ukraine. World markets of grains and products have become firmer since the introduction of the import schemes many years ago. Wheat and maize tariffs are being calculated against world market prices and have resulted in zero duties over long periods. Barley tariffs are not related to world market prices. In view of the Brexit, it may be time indeed to review the current tariff scheme, the analysts said.
Even for malt the present “prohibition“ tariffs of imports seem outdated, at a time, when the three largest maltsters of the world are French. Will the bureaucracy move? They should also not forget

India: Diageo seeks $135 mln worth of United Breweries shares seized from Vijay Mallya
|
Diageo is seeking to assert its “legal and substantial” rights to $135 mln worth of shares in India’s United Breweries Holdings pledged to it by Vijay Mallya and his son Siddhareth, The Drinks Business said quoting reports in India.
The shares, which have been seized by the Indian authorities, were used by Mallya as collateral for a loan guaranteed by Diageo’s Dutch subsidiary. Mallya defaulted on the loan and Diageo’s guarantee was called in.
India’s Enforcement Directorate has taken control of all Mallya’s assets in the country under its Prevention of Money Laundering legislation and a consortium of state-run Indian banks wants them liquidated to recoup the £1.15 billion they claim Mallya owes them as a result of the collapse of his Kingfisher Airlines in 2012.
The Economic Times reports that Diageo has opposed that application and has asked the court to be allowed to present its case over first rights ownership of the shares before they are sold.
Indian sources suggest this application will be opposed by the Economic Directorate but that Diageo might seek redress from Mallya under its Fugitive Economic Offender legislation.
Mallya fled to Britain in March 2016 and has appealed against a court ruling that he should be extradited to

Germany: Winter barley crop expected to increase by 33.9%, spring to drop by 6.8% this year
|
Germany’s 2019 winter barley crop, mostly used for animal feed, will rise 33.9 percent on last year’s drought-reduced harvest to 9.87 million tonnes, the German association of farm cooperatives said on March 14 in its first forecast for the new crop.
The spring barley crop, generally used for malt and beer production, is expected to fall by 6.8 percent on the year to 2.05 million tonnes. This is partly because there is less need to re-sow frost damaged grains after the warm winter.
The wheat harvest will rise by 19.4 percent against last year’s output to 24.20 million tonnes, the association said.
The German harvest in 2018 was sharply reduced by a drought and heatwave but the unusually mild winter so far has helped wheat crops after sowed area was expanded, the DRV said.
The grain maize (corn) crop will increase by 27.2 percent to 4.25 million tonnes, it forecast.

Vietnam: SAV auditor general justifies conclusions on Sabeco’s tax arrears
|
The conclusions of the State Audit of Vietnam (SAV) on the forced collection of tax debts from Unilever Vietnam International Co. Ltd. and Saigon Beer-Alcohol-Beverage Corporation (Sabeco) are reasonable and are not cause for lawsuits, the local media reported, citing SAV auditor general Ho Duc Phoc.
At a discussion held on March 11 on the draft law amending and supplementing some articles of the Law on State Audit, part of the 32nd session of the National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee, Phoc affirmed that it is baseless to say that SAV’s conclusions are wrong, leading to lawsuits, as SAV had collected evidence about the tax debts of these enterprises from tax agencies, and not from the enterprises themselves.
At a meeting of the NA Standing Committee on February 21 to discuss the draft amended law on tax management, Minister of Finance Dinh Tien Dung said that from 2013 to 2018, enterprises filed 14 lawsuits against tax agencies following SAV’s conclusions. The tax agencies lost all 10 cases after going to trial.
The minister placed the responsibility on the SAV.
In response, Phoc said he had assigned the staff to work with the General Department of Taxation.
As for the coercive collection of tax arrears from Unilever

Slovakia: Slovaks prefer beer to wine, research shows
|
More than one third of Slovaks (38 percent) tend to call themselves beer-drinkers instead of wine-drinkers (26 percent). The most popular is 10 percent bale beer but non-alcoholic beer and radlers are gaining popularity, as the research for the Slovak Association of Beer and Malt Producers showed.
Slovaks mainly drink beer containing alcohol. About 72 percent drink it at least once a week, more men (86 percent) than women (58 percent).
The research also showed that Slovaks prefer draught beer (44 percent) and pale 10-degree beer (44 percent).
Women prefer small draught beer (45 percent) more and more than three-fourths of men drink draught beer (84 percent). In addition to pale beer (36 percent) women like non-alcoholic beer (37 percent).
Slovak favourites also include radler, flavoured beers and non-alcoholic beer. About 56 percent of Slovaks drink flavoured beers and radlers at least once a week (60 percent of women and 51 percent of men) and 51 percent Slovaks drink non-alcoholic beer, more women (58 percent) than men (43 percent).
About 38 percent of Slovaks consider themselves to be beer drinkers more than wine drinkers (26 percent). About 16 percent of respondents do not consider themselves beer or wine drinkers, and 20 percent do not consume

India: United Breweries looking to expand non-alcoholic beer offering
|
United Breweries Ltd (UBL) is looking to bolster its non-alcoholic beverages segment, following the footsteps of its 44 per cent owner Heineken which plans to earn 10 per cent of its portfolio revenue from non-alcoholic drinks by 2025, The Hindu BusinessLine reported on March 13.
As part of the plan, UBL will launch Heineken 0.0, a non-alcoholic beer by month-end. This is its second product in the segment.
The company, however, hasn’t yet worked out a fixed target for its non-alcoholic beverages segment, like Heineken.
UBL ventured into the non-alcoholic beverages segment with Kingfisher Radler in last October. Both Kingfisher Radler and Henieken 0.0 come under this segment — the former is a soft drink and the latter non-alcoholic beer.
Both are pegged as premium products and healthy alternatives to products currently in the market, said Visvanathan.
Heineken 0.0 is made in the Netherlands and is available in 40 countries. The product will be imported into India and will initially be launched in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad, with the focus markets being metros, Ramesh Visvanathan, Chief New Business Officer, UBL, told BusinessLine.
Kingfisher Radler is produced at UBL’s factory in Bihar. The company is targeting five per cent market share — only in the

UK: Consumers don’t believe big brewers can make craft beer - survey
|
The vast majority of beer drinkers in the UK don’t believe that large-scale producers like AB InBev can make craft beer, according to a survey by the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA).
The report, which said that 98% of consumers think a beer brewed by any major brewer can’t be considered craft, casts doubt on the marketing of smaller breweries that have been bought by or received investment from large-scale firms in recent years. Some 43% of the survey’s respondents said that a craft beer could only be made by a small brewery, while 42% said a craft brewer must be independent. This figure is actually down from 46% in a similar survey SIBA carried out in 2017.
SIBA’s craft beer report focused on the prevalence of large brewers either launching their own “crafty” products, such as Guinness’ Hop House 13 lager, or buying up smaller producers as more consumers shift away from mainstream lagers.
The integrity of the craft beer movement is a highly emotive subject within the brewing industry. Last summer, north London brewery Beavertown sold a 49% stake in its business to Heineken for £40 million, which would go towards a new state-of-the-art brewing facility as well as securing a

South Korea: Hite Jinro to release its first new lager in six years
|
Hite Jinro said on March 13 it will release its first new lager brand in six years next week, the Korea Times reported.
The sub-brand dubbed Terra will hit domestic store shelves on March 21. The product is designed to provide a more "refreshing taste" compared to other beers already on the market.
Fine dust concentration in Korea has caused rising consumer demand for light, pure tastes in beer, according to Hite Jinro.
Terra will be marketed toward customers interested in health and wellness. Beer contains carbonic acid that forms naturally during the fermentation process.
At a press conference for unveiling Terra, CEO and President Kim In-kyu said the blonde lager brand will sharpen Hite Jinro's brand identity and restore its profitability.
"For the last few years, we were hurt by consumers' changing tastes and elevated competition with foreign beer competitors," Kim said. "The teams have worked intensively on creating Terra to revive the sales and attract customers back."
Hite Jinro, whose flagship brands include Hite beer and Chamisul Soju, said the new product has a soft, delicate maltiness with 4.6 percent alcohol content.
The product, priced the same as conventional beer, will be sold in green bottles to promote a

Kenya: Kenya Breweries Limited launches Tusker Premium Ale
|
Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) has ventured into the premium alcoholic beverage market with the launch of a new ale as it seeks to grow beer sales and woo the middle-class segment, the Daily Nation reported on March 13.
The firm has launched Tusker Premium Ale, which it says is made from aromatic hops and crystal malt. The move is part of East African Breweries Ltd – KBL’s parent company — bid to counter consumers’ increasing shift to premium and foreign brews from mass-market brands.
The beer is being sold in a stubby 500-mililitre bottle at a recommended retail price of Sh210.
KBL senior innovations manager Victor Kagema told Business Daily the new product is targeting Kenya’s fast-expanding middle class revellers whose tastes are trending toward premium beer. “It is positioned for that consumer with discerning taste,” said Mr Kagema in an interview.
