0 South Africa: SABMiller’s South Africa beer business reports sustained growth

The South African beverage business, the subsidiary of SABMiller, has announced on November 10, EBITA growth of 19% in US Dollars to $375-million for the six month period to end September 2005.

Commenting on sustained volume growth of almost 3% in domestic beer sales, South African Breweries Ltd Managing Director Tony van Kralingen said that the South African economy had been performing particularly well, with low interest rates, low inflation and sustained consumer confidence.

“Beer and soft drink volumes continued to record positive growth during the period, driven by a strong economy, a warmer winter and targeted marketing and sales activity.

Turnover grew 11% from $1,684-million to $1,864-million, with the operating margin increasing from 18.7% to 20.1%, reflecting increased revenue, the strength of the Rand, lower brewing commodity prices and further cost efficiencies.

SAB Ltd’s share of the total liquor market has been maintained at just under 60%, while the company increased its delivered customer base by 10% over the past six months, in line with its market penetration strategy and increased licensing in two jurisdictions.

0 Singapore: Asia Pacific Breweries reports FY2005 PBIT of $220.4 mln on sales of $1.44 bln

Asia Pacific Breweries Limited (APB) reported on November 11 record high in revenue, profit before interest and taxation (PBIT) and attributable net profit before exceptional items for the year ended 30 September 2005, driven by stronger sales in almost all its markets.

Attributable net profit before exceptional items grew by 10% or $10.7 million above last year to hit $115.5 million. Similarly, PBIT rose by the same margin or $20.8 million to reach $220.4 million on the back of a revenue of $1.44 billion which grew 5% or $65.7 million from $1.37 billion previously.

Basic earnings per share (before exceptional items) based on the 12-month results amounted to 45.1 cents compared with 41.1 cents in the previous period.

Directors have declared a final net dividend of 16 cents per share which will be paid to shareholders on 15 Feb 06. This is inclusive of a 2-cent dividend accorded in commemoration of APB's 75th anniversary which falls on 14 April 2006.

0 USA: Tsingtao and Monarch Import Co. extend Tsingtao Beer's import agreement in USA

China’s Tsingtao Brewery and Barton Beers' Monarch Import Company in Chicago announced on November 14 that they are celebrating the extension of the Tsingtao Beer U.S. import agreement, according to PRNewswire.

Under the renewal, Monarch Import Company will remain the exclusive importer of Tsingtao Beer for the U.S. market, Bermuda and the U.S. Virgin Islands through calendar year 2011. Monarch, a subsidiary of Barton Beers, Ltd., has imported Tsingtao since 1978 and has enhanced the brand's position as the best-selling imported beer from China and one of the top imported beers in the U.S. market. The Tsingtao Brewery is the largest brewery in China.

"We are excited about the brewery's renewed commitment and look forward to expanding Tsingtao's position and market share in the U.S. for many years to come," said Jim Ryan, Chief Executive Officer of Monarch Import Company. 0 World: The latest USDA estimations on world barley trade for 2004/2005

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) posted on November 14 its latest estimations for 2004-2005 barley trade. According to USDA EU-25 barley exports were estimated with 500,000 tonnes more to 3.5 million tonnes thanks to very strong shipments in recent months. Russia barley export is raised nearly 200,000 tonnes to 1.488 million on year-end trade data.

Japan barley imports are estimated by USDA at 1.522 million tonnes, the highest in 5 years, with year-end trade data, up nearly 200,000 tonnes compared to the October’s estimations. A smaller change was made to the 05/06 estimate. Saudi Arabia barley imports are estimated up 500,000 tonnes to 6.5 million with very strong late-season shipments from Ukraine and Russia.
