Canada: Barley sales at home and abroad expected to be strong in 2018-19
|
For 2018-19, Canada’s total domestic barley use is forecast to increase to 6.074 mln tonnes on higher feed and industrial use, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in their March report.
Exports are forecast to remain strong (at 2.7 mln tonnes), although slightly lower than last year, due to strong international demand.
Carry-out stocks are forecast to decrease by 28% to 0.9 million tonnes that will be a record low level.
The average price of feed barley at Lethbridge for the crop year is expected to be C$255/t, about 12% higher than last year.
Similar to feed barley, the quality of the malting barley crop is variable. The extensive summer heat increased the protein content of the crop and lowered the weight of the crop, depending on the date of maturity and area, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reported.
The Lethbridge spot feed barley prices to-date have been about 18% higher than last year and Prairie malt prices have been 15-25% higher than last year.

USA: Hop stocks drop 2% from 2018 after three years of increases
|
U.S. hop stocks totaled 165 million pounds on March 1, down 2% from 2018 after three years of increases.
“With any swing in the market, history has shown time and time again there is bound to be an overcorrection. This is a sign the market is balancing back out,” said Jaki Brophy, spokeswoman for the Hop Growers of America and the Washington Hop Commission, both in Moxee.
Washington state produced 73% of the nation’s hops in 2018, with Idaho at 15% and Oregon at 12%.
Production was pushed upward for years by 20% annual growth in the craft beer industry. But the growth of craft beer has slowed to 5% a year since 2015, resulting in the growth of hop inventories.
In December, Pete Mahony, vice president of supply chain and purchasing for John I. Haas Inc. in Yakima, said hop consumption appeared to be keeping pace with supply, a positive sign.
The industry hopes that’s the case, preventing oversupply and a downturn in prices, but there are a lot of variables, Ann George, administrator of Hop Growers of America and the Washington Hop Commission, said in December.

Canada: Brewers disappointed with new budget not stopping taxes from going up
|
Brewers are disappointed that the 2019 Budget does nothing to stop taxes on beer, wine and spirits from going up yet again. Federal excise tax on all beverage alcohol products will automatically go up on April 1, the third increase in just 2 years. Budget 2019 fails to repeal the rigid and unfair escalator tax on Canadians, the Canada NewsWire reported on March 19.
Federal excise tax is a production tax on brewers that ends up costing Canadian beer drinkers. The tax is built into the price of every bottle of beer, wine or distilled beverage. Liquor board markups and sales taxes are layered on top. The annual hike in federal excise bumps up GST/PST/HST and other taxes, doubling and tripling the tax hit to wallets year after year and making beer less and less affordable.
In 2017, the federal government introduced legislation to increase federal excise yearly. This legislation allows the federal government to by-pass debate in Parliament and hide the annual tax increase from Canadians.

USA, TX: Women-led Central District Brewing now open in Austin
|
Central District Brewing, the women-led downtown brewery found on the ground floor of the Austin Convention Center parking garage, is now open. It’s located at 417 Red River Street, Eater Austin reported on March 19.
Though Central District’s own beers won’t be ready until May, the brewery is serving options from local breweries who don’t often export their beers, including Brewtorium, Pinthouse Pizza, and Southern Heights Brewery. Central District also serves cider, coffee, and non-local wines, to be conscious of its neighbor the locally-minded Texas Reds and Whites.
As for food, Central District is only offering pretzels from Russell’s Bakery for now while the team figures out what else it can serve. The decor is also a work-in-progress, expected to finish in April.
Behind the brewery are husband and wife teams Julie and Joe Ballato (who manage operations) and Angela and Adam Duley (who are in charge of the beer), as well as general manager Trent Relles, formerly of Mexican restaurant Suerte and East Austin brewery Lazarus.
Angela shared that Adam is working on a pale ale and a saison for the warm season. The brewery also has plans to make small-batch brews to showcase variations in yeast, and host classes on sensory training.

USA, GA & AL: Atlanta’s Monday Night Brewing considering brewpub in Birmingham, Alabama
|
An Atlanta brewery wants to open a brewpub in Birmingham, but it’s waiting to see what the Alabama Legislature does with a pending piece of legislation, AL.com reported on March 20.
Monday Night Brewing is eyeing a brewpub as part of the Denham Building development by Atlanta’s Third and Urban, which will include more than 86,000 square feet of office, retail and restaurant space. In addition, 72 urban-style loft apartments will be constructed as part of the larger project.
The product of three friends’ love of beer and conversation, Monday Night Brewing began after founders Jonathan Baker, Jeff Heck, and Joel Iverson met in a Bible study group through Atlanta Westside Presbyterian Church. On Monday nights, they would brew beer in Heck’s backyard as a way to get to know each other better. By 2011 they were introducing their own brand. They now have two locations in Atlanta - their original brewery and taproom, and a barrel-aging and souring facility.
“It’s about providing a place for meaningful conversations and relationships to develop over really great beer,” he said.
The beer began appearing in Alabama in 2014, and is also sold in Tennessee.

USA, NJ: Brick City Brewing Company eyeing location in Newark
|
When thinking of breweries in Newark, the massive Anheuser-Busch plant on Routes 1 and 9 likely comes to mind or perhaps the relatively recent All Points West Distillery in the Ironbound. The city was also once home to a Pabst Blue Ribbon brewery in the West Ward, the Ballantine Brewing Company in the East Ward, and several other beer production plants. Now, a Downtown Newark building that was constructed back in the heyday of Newark’s brewing industry could soon possibly be home to a small brewery itself, the Jersey Digs reported on March 21.
A firm called the Brick City Brewing Company has applied to the New Jersey Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control for a “limited brewing license” to be used at 540 Broad Street, according to a legal notice that was issued in February. Located opposite Washington Park, the address in question contains the former New Jersey Bell Headquarters Building, which is in the process of being converted by L+M Development Partners into the Walker House development with stores, apartments, and office space.

USA, IL: Byers Brewing Company coming to DeKalb this summer
|
Beer lovers rejoice: A local brewing company is slated to open in downtown DeKalb by the summer, the DeKalb Daily Chronicle reported on March 20.
Byers Brewing Company will move into the first level at 230 E. Lincoln Highway, according to the brewery’s website. The building is owned by Cohen Barnes of Sundog IT.
City Manager Bill Nicklas said the brewery will bring a unique experience to DeKalb.
“I do think it would be creative and positive for the downtown. It’s new and different, and the space is right,” Nicklas said on March 20. “I’d like to see that space rented. It should be a fun place to visit.”
The site says the business will open its doors this summer 2019, and that it’s the brainchild of Steve and Megan Byers. Steve Byers is a science teacher at Huntley Middle School, said Barnes.
Nicklas said the Byerses have recently been issued a building permit. Principal Planner Dan Olson said they are in the process of applying for a liquor license.

USA, OR: Cascade Lakes Brewing changes ownership
|
Father-and-son Bruce and Andy Rhine have acquired a majority stake in Bend, Oregon-based Cascade Lakes Brewing, the company announced on March 21.
Speaking with Brewbound, Andy Rhine said he and his father purchased ownership stakes held by previous owners Rick Orazetti and Doug and Ron Kutella. The Rhines now own 75 percent of the 25-year-old company. Chris Justema, who invested in the company in 2003, owns the other 25 percent stake in the business and will serve as president.
The transaction closed on October 12, 2018, and the purchase price was not disclosed.
“We’re very much viewing this as a 10-, 20-, 30-year investment,” Rhine said. “We’re learning the business for the time being and not rushing into things.”
In a press release, Justema said he is “humbled by the Rhine family’s vote of confidence in Cascade Lakes Brewing Company.”
“Under this new structure, we will sharpen our focus on the quality of beer and the consistency of our products across the board,” he said. “There’s a new energy here to make better beer and build a stronger local presence in Central Oregon.”

USA, MA: Medford Brewing Company raising money for own brewery
|
Medford Brewing Company is raising money to open the city's first brewery. The company, which has been contract brewing over the last couple years, launched a crowdfunding campaign in late February seeking investors for its own brewery, Patch.com reported on March 20.
The Wefunder campaign would fund one of two options – a large operation in West Medford or a scaled-down location in Medford Square – based on how much money is raised, co-founder Nick Bolitho told Eater. A brewery would save the company money on beer production while allowing it to host local fans at its taproom.
Medford Beer Company recently signed with Atlantic Beverage Distributors and is now in over 200 locations, the company wrote on Facebook earlier this month.

USA, MA: Night Shift Brewing opens second location in Boston
|
A local Boston craft brewing company opened the doors of its second location near TD Garden on March 20, NECN reported.
The third largest brewery in Massachusetts, Night Shift Brewing now has a new brewery and restaurant on Lovejoy Wharf. The new location boasts a 10-barrel brewhouse and promises to feature at least one new beer on tap each week.
In addition, the brewery has a scratch kitchen and new Night Shift coffee bar, called Night Shift Roasting, which will serve craft-brewed coffee.
The new location hopes to draw crowds to its 300-seat restaurant and 80-seat summer patio.

USA, CA: Align Brewing to close down, is for sale
|
For the second time in as many weeks, a Miramar brewery is announcing it is closing. The week before last it was Reckless Brewing. Now it is the Miralani Makers District’s Align Brewing. Owner Andrew Heino took to Facebook on March 18 to let fans of the business know of his plans to move from San Diego to Hawaii. In doing so, he shared that the brewery is for sale, westcoastersd.com reported.
“I want to thank all my friends, family, fans, supporters, and beer community who have made this beer journey of mine, an unforgettable positive experience,” Heino wrote. “As of now, Align is up for sale. (Please serious inquiries only. And please do your research beforehand.)”
Heino opened Align in 2017. It was his second attempt at entrepreneurship at his current location. The first happened in 2013 when he and business partner Chris Chalmers opened Pacific Brewing. After three years, the Stone Brewing alums and long-time friends no longer saw eye-to-eye. Chalmers moved on, leaving Heino to open Align.

USA, AL: Red Hills Brewing Company to shutter permanently
|
Hopeful patrons of Red Hills Brewing Company received some bad news on March 20: the Homewood brewery will shutter permanently, AL.com reported.
The brewery posted the news on their social media pages. The posts read:
“To our loyal supporters of Red Hills Brewing Company:
Thank you for your patronage and support these past two years. Your loyalty and passion for our beer has made us proud.
It is with great sadness that we inform you of our closing. We have enjoyed being a part of the Homewood community and look forward to our next chapter.
With Gratitude, Red Hills Brewing Company”
The announcement is disappointment to those who hoped the brewery would have a grand reopening last month.
Last December, Red Hills announced they were going dark for a few weeks and working on “something big.”
Red Hills opened in Homewood in 2016 next to Steel City Pops and was the first brewery in the Birmingham area to open over the mountain in the suburbs. A nod to Alabama’s state amphibian, the red hills salamander, the brewery started off brewing four beers.
Original owner Joe Pilleteri and brewer Eric Baumann met as homebrewers.

USA: MillerCoors sues AB InBev for corn syrup ad
|
A fight between beer giants escalated on March 21 after MillerCoors filed a lawsuit against Anheuser-Busch that accused its rival of trying to "frighten" consumers into switching to Bud Light with "misleading" Super Bowl ads, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.
MillerCoors said in the lawsuit filed in Wisconsin federal court that St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch has spent as much as $30 million on a "false and misleading" campaign, including $13 million in its first commercials during this year's Super Bowl. The ad showed a medieval caravan pushing a huge barrel of corn syrup to castles for MillerCoors to make Miller Lite and Coors Light. The commercial states that Bud Light isn't brewed with corn syrup.
Chicago-based MillerCoors and Anheuser-Busch have the biggest U.S. market share at 24.8 percent and 41.6 percent, respectively, but they've been losing business in recent years to smaller independent brewers, imports, and wine and spirits, according to the Brewers Association.
Anheuser-Busch's ad drew a rebuke from the National Corn Growers Association, which thanked MillerCoors for its support. In its lawsuit, MillerCoors said it's "not ashamed of its use of corn syrup as a fermentation aid."

The sale of Vijay Mallya’s confiscated shareholdings in India could go ahead soon.
A special court hearing the Prevention and Money Laundering Act (PMLA) cases has given permission for a consortium of banks to sell equity holdings owned by the former head of United Spirits seized by the country’s Enforcement Directorate (ED), The Drinks Business reported on March 20.
Sources close to the bank consortium reckon that up to £1.7 billion could be raised in the sales, which would be more than sufficient to repay the banks the £1.15 billion they claim to be owed as a result of the failure of Mallya’s Kingfisher Airlines in 2012.
He has always contended that the sum owed is far less and that he has offered to repay the outstanding loans. He fled to the UK in March 2016 and is now awaiting the result of his appeal against extradition to India to face charges of fraud and money laundering.
Mallya personally held 7.91% stake in UB Holdings, his overall holding company, as of December 2016, but controlled the company through a web of family and other indirect holdings.

Luxembourg: Brewers invest in modernizing seeing growth potential in the market

Beer is one of the few industries which has weathered the last century and even put Luxembourg on the world map. Delano examines how Luxembourg’s brewing industry is securing its future.
Luxembourg has a long brewing tradition dating back to at least 1300. At the industry’s height in the 1950s, the country boasted some 12 breweries. While today, that number has fallen to three large breweries and a handful of micro-breweries, brewers certainly see this industry as a “glass half-full” activity, investing millions in modernising their operations.
Belgian beer giant AB InBev inaugurated a new brewing facility in Diekirch for the Mousel and Diekirch pils brands on March 15. This €25 mln project, of which €12 mln went into constructing the new brewery building, was to provide a facility “for the next 100 years,” operational director Pierre Van Vynckt told Delano on March 15. The brewery was first founded in 1871 and continued a tradition begun by monks. Japan: Craft beer sector slowly getting busier

In 2014, Japan surprised the world when connoisseur Jim Murray made his pick for “World Whiskey of the Year.” Rather than something Scottish, or Irish, Murray gave a nod to the Japanese Yamazaki Single Malt Sherry Cask 2013, giving it a 97.5 out of 100, Forbes reported on March 19.
“Near incredible genius,” he wrote. “A single malt which no Scotch can at the moment get anywhere near.”
Since then, Japan has taken the whiskey world by storm, with critics heaping praise on houses like Nikka, Suntory, Kirin and Chichibu, the darling of Japan’s independent whisky scene. But for all their talent with whisky, the Japanese have yet to master another Western beverage: craft beer.
“The macro brews are of course still very popular,” said Ioanna Morelli, co-owner of Niseko-based Bar Gyu+ with her husband, Hisashi Watanabe. “Japan is a hot country in the summer time and the major players like Asahi and Kirin have 'super cold' or 'sub 0' pilsners that are really popular.”
In the past few years, a handful of Japanese craft breweries have opened around the country, to varying degrees of success.

Malaysia: Heineken to hike prices despite very positive results last year

Heineken Malaysia will be raising its product prices as a response to the ‘challenging environment’ in in country, despite reporting very positive results in its 2018 year-end financial report, BeverageDaily.com reported on March 20.
The company said that it was being ‘cautious’ about moving forward, citing factors such as intense competition, the new Sales and Service Tax (SST) being implemented last September, and a continued contraband beer concern.
“The external environment remains challenging,” Heineken Malaysia Managing Director Roland Bala said.
“Amidst slowing global growth rates, currency volatility and uncertainty in the commodity markets, we will need to adopt a cautious approach in cost management.”
Amongst these cost management actions is a hike in the company’s products, which it confirmed would be raised by a maximum of 5% by April 1.
This was in response to increases in operational costs, which would include raw materials and packaging prices.
Heineken Malaysia owns and operates many of the major beer and beverage brands in the country, including Heineken, Tiger, Guinness, Kirin and Kilkenny.
That said, Heineken announced commendable results in its 2018 financial report, with revenue rising to RM2.03 bln from RM1.87 bln the previous year, a growth of 8.3%.

India: United Breweries expects disruption to sales due to general elections
|
United Breweries, India's largest beer maker, expects demand and operations to be disrupted during the general elections as sale and consumption of liquor will be banned on and around the voting days, the Economic Times reported on March 18.
“Election is a big disruptor simply because there are a huge amount of restrictions on hours of operations, outlet closures and dry days. So it makes the business of alcohol much more complicated," said Shekhar Ramamurthy, managing director of Heineken-controlled UB.
The April 11-May 19 Lok Sabha (the lower house of India's bicameral Parliament) election will overlap with the Indian Premiere League cricket matches and the summer months, which have traditionally boosted demand for beer in the country. “It is not a question of dip in sales. It is a question of complexity in operations. For beer, the issue is that if the elections come in peak summer season, it is even a bigger disruptor,” Ramamurthy said.
