Spent hops for haze stability
ABSTRACT
It is not totally surprising that hops might be the
solution to another challenge many brewers have, a
stable haze! US researchers looked into the
usage of spent hops to increase haze stability. Not only
did the spent hop extract show potential to scavenge
free radicals; it was also found that haze stability in
Pale Ale can be increased by the addition of spent hop
extract (0.3-0.5% v/v). Although total protein content
in spent hop extract is extremely low to participate in
haze stability, Procyanidin B2 and Epicatechin found in
spent hops are haze active and antioxidants.

Canada: Barley exports in August-December total 1 mln tonnes with majority going to China

Canada’s barley exports in August – December 2018 were 1 mln tonnes, of which 660 thousand to China, and virtually nothing to the USA, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported on March 2.
The country is excluded from exports to Saudi Arabia, but now markets wonder whether Canadian barley could replace a larger percentage of Australian imports into China.
Canada’s harvested barley acreage was 5.9 mln acres in 2018, was forecast at 6.2 mln for this year, but may even become larger.
Domestic feed use is higher than forecast and may top 6 mln tonnes at the end of the 2018/19 grain year.
Malting and other demand of 1.15 mln tonnes looks stable, but maltsters must be aware of the anticipated large malting barley exports.

USA, UT: UTOG Brewing Co. to open its doors on March 26 in Ogden

Jeff Manwaring opened up the door to the roof of UTOG Brewing Co. on March 26 to reveal a stunning view of Ben Lomond Peak, the same mountain depicted on the brewery’s beer cans, the Standard-Examiner reported on March 27.
Manwaring is one of three co-owners opening the brewery and restaurant in downtown Ogden near the corner of 23rd Street and Grant Avenue.
"This is what sold me," he said, surveying the view.
UTOG Brewing Co. is opening at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 26. The restaurant area at the front of the building can seat up to 105 people. A section near the full-service bar will be for patrons who are of legal drinking age but Manwaring said he wants families to feel welcome at UTOG.
Manwaring works primarily with the restaurant side of the business and has experience running an outdoor adventure company in Park City, where he’s from. Co-owner Jack Hubble is an experienced businessman and co-owner Carson Foss is the brains behind the beer.
Foss has been home brewing beer for 12 years and said it’s nice to brew on a larger scale. He had the idea to start a brewery about three years ago and brought both Manwaring and Hubble

USA, KS: Red Crow Brewing Co. now open in Olathe
|
A little over a year after relocating from Spring Hill, Kansas, to Olathe, Kansas, Red Crow Brewing Co. is now open, Flatland reported on March 26.
Red Crow (1062 W. Santa Fe Drive) is initially serving three beers: Louise (an IPA), Isabelle (a Belgian blonde) and Donna (wheat). Chris and Mistie Roberts, along with Joe and Loretta Fisher (Mistie’s parents) opened Red Crow in 2015. When they outgrew their initial space, they looked for a new location and have spent the past year building out the brewery.
In the coming weeks, Red Crow will add in growler fills and likely have more of its core lineup on tap. On the food side, food trucks will rotate through on the weekends and BB’s Grill is available for delivery. The brewery will be closed on Mondays, open from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

USA, TX: Town In City Brewing puts its brewery in Houston for sale, plans move to larger facility

Town In City Brewing put its brewery and tap room in the Heights up for sale as the locally-owned brewery prepares to move to a larger facility to accommodate growth in its cider business, Chron.com reported on March 26.
“We listed the property today,” co-owner Justin Engle said on March 26. “We’re not able to disclose exactly where we’re moving to. We just know it is going to be somewhere in the city.”
Since opening in August 2015, area residents and out-of-town visitors have enjoyed the outdoor patio and small tap room, which hosts trivia night, open mic night and pop-up kitchens from various chefs. The brewery is looking to move to a warehouse-type space of close to 10,000 square feet, Engle said, and at least initially, it will not be open to the public.
The 3,749-square-foot building, which sits on a 10,000-square-foot lot at 1125 West Cavalcade near North Main Street, is being offered for sale with or without the brewing equipment, according to NAI Partners, the commercial real estate firm hired to market the property. The asking price, without the brewing equipment, is $1 million.

USA, MD: Full Tilt Brewing officially opens in Baltimore
|
There’s a new brewery in Baltimore, CBS Baltimore reported on March 27.
While their space on York Road in Govans has been open since December, they didn’t have their official grand opening until March 22.
And this brewery still has more in store for beer-lovers.
On Sunday March 31 at 1 p.m, Full Tilt Brewing will release their new craft beer, “Hampden Cream” for $5 all day.
The brewery will also put on an animal adoption event in partnership with Baltimore Animal Rescue Care Shelter on Saturday from 12-3 p.m.
Attendees can adopt an animal on the spot or bring $10 worth of donations for a free beer or flight depending on your donation.
“It’s a place where anyone from young families to college students can go to have a good time, everyone can always find a little nook and hang out,” said owner, Nick Fertig.
Founders Nick Fertig and Dan Baumiller’s journey first began in 2008 when they started home brewing.
Four years later they went into business with Peabody Heights Brewery in Abell Baltimore since 2012.
They later met All Time Low’s lead singer, Alex Gaskarth, who invested in the brewery as well as graphic designer Jeff Chenault, who is responsible for most of their cans.

USA, MI: Presidential Brewing Co. launched in Portage by husband and wife team

Jake and Kayleigh Lohse are tossing their hats into the ring and looking for supporters as Kalamazoo County’s newest brewery, MLive.com reported on March 26.
The husband and wife are the President and First Lady of Presidential Brewing Co., 8302 Portage Road, Portage which opened on Tuesday, March 26, offering beer brewed on site, as well as a full food menu.
The brewery opened after years of business planning and preparations that followed years of brainstorming and dreaming of starting a business, Jake Lohse said.
He and other family members would get together to try new beers each week and the gatherings grew in popularity as friends joined in. When they decided the best beer to try would be a new one they brewed themselves, they created their first recipe for The Oatbama Stout, a beer that is on tap at the brewery now.
Lohse calls it the most happy accident of his life.
“We never intended to open a brewery but what we found is we really like bringing people together, and I like drinking beer and I like making beer," he said. "It turns out beer helps bring people together.”

USA, CA: E.J. Phair Brewing Company coming to Alamo soon

A new craft brewery will soon open in Alamo. E.J. Phair Brewing Company will move into the Alamo Plaza shopping center in April, according to the restaurant's website, Patch.com reported on March 26.
Although they have not yet announced a menu for the new location, the brewery's Pittsburg and Concord locations offer pizza, sandwiches and salads, in addition to a large craft beer selection.
Alamo Plaza is located at Stone Valley Road and Danville Boulevard in Alamo.

USA: Pabst Blue Ribbon slated to launch a whiskey this summer

Pabst Blue Ribbon is slated to launch a whiskey this summer. With cocktail consumption cannibalizing beer and wine sales left and right, it is no surprise that smart brewers are entering new categories, Forbes reported on March 26.
The brewer, established in 1844 in Milwaukee and currently based in Los Angeles, did not respond to questions for comment for this story.
Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), which is based in Washington D.C., approved the product based on it meeting all legal requirements, notes Tom Hogue, the agency's director of congressional and public affairs. He added that the company’s statement about the whiskey’s production was sufficiently standard to meet all government regulations.
The whiskey, which is 40% alcohol by volume, even has a mash bill—identifying the type of grain used—on it, he notes.
In a fascinating move, the whiskey’s aging statements note that the product was aged for only five seconds. That is less than a flash in the pan for this type of spirit which can be aged for many more years in barrel. Pabst clearly didn’t want to call it a white whiskey—although it is likely to be pale in color—or moonshine, because it might have had negative connotations.

Spain: Mahou San Miguel opens collaborative space for domestic and international craft breweries

Mahou San Miguel has opened the first Brewhub in Spain, a collaborative space for domestic and international craft breweries to share ideas and develop beers, for sale in Spain and across Europe, BeverageDaily.com reported on March 29.
The €11 mln facility, next to the Mahou San Miguel brewery in Cordoba, is equipped with the latest technology to develop the craft segment at international level.
Alberto Rodríguez-Toquero, MD, Mahou San Miguel, said the company is committed to developing initiatives ‘that enable evolution and growth’.
“The craft movement is a clear example of this transformation and we wish to boost it through a project based on innovation and collaboration,” he said.
“This centre stems from the calling for becoming a point of reference in the artisan brewery sector at an international level.”
Initially, the Brewhub will have a production capacity of 50,000 hectolitres that, through continued expansion, will grow to 110,000 hectolitres and, potentially 500,000 hectolitres.
The facilities have been specifically designed to fulfil the requirements of craft production.
Mahou San Miguel has partnered with Javier Aldea, founder, Nómada Brewing, on the project who will become the manager of the Brewhub.

South Korea: Consumers and restaurant owners frustrated with Oriental Brewery’s price hikes

Consumers and restaurant owners are expressing frustration with Oriental Brewery (OB) for the brewer's decision to hike beer prices by 5.3 percent from April 4, the Korea Times reported on March 27.
Beer lovers complain it will be more financially burdensome to have a glass of beer with family or friends as many struggle with soaring housing prices and the tight job market. People running restaurants and other eateries say it will be difficult to charge more, despite higher beer prices, in fear of losing customers amid sluggish domestic consumption.
"Why don't domestic beer companies take measures to upgrade instead of raising the price?" Jeon Hyung-joon, 29, a regular beer consumer, said. "From now on, I'd rather spend more money on imported beers or prestigious or specialty beer brands."
Another beer consumer, who asked not to be named, said "I'm worried OB's shift will lead to a collective price rise. If that happens, I'd have to be rational about selecting a beer from restaurants and bars for financial reasons."
Restaurant owners are also wary about the price hike as they are faced with the situation to increase beer prices in accordance to brewers' moves.

UK: Krombacher launches non-alcoholic wheat beer Weizen in the UK

German beer brand Krombacher has expanded its portfolio with the addition of a non-alcoholic wheat beer called Weizen in the UK, the Drinks Insight Network reported on March 28.
With less than 0.5% alcohol by volume (ABV), the new non-alcoholic beer is brewed with Hallertau hops and fresh mountain spring water.
This latest drink comes following the launch of Krombacher Low Alcohol Pils.
Krombacher UK and Italy sales and marketing director Stephan Kofler said: “Not only have campaigns like Dry January shown that there is a real demand for low and no alcohol beers but it’s made people realise that there are now some fantastic tasting options available of varying styles.
“Whether it’s down the local pub or at a major supermarket, you’re now seeing plenty of choices and I believe our Weizen will prove a welcome addition to the arena.
“Brewed the same way as our full-strength Weizen but using our special de-alcoholisation process to retain maximum flavour.”
Targeted at the UK on-trade and off-trade, it will be rolled out immediately in 50cl bottles in cases of 12.
Kofler expects the new beer to attract runners and cyclists.
In January 2017, the German brewer introduced a range of non-alcoholic beers in its local market.
