Come on, let's dip hop!
ABSTRACT
Japanese researchers introduced this hopping
technology already 2013 at the EBC. Dip hopping means
the addition of hop after wort cooling before start of
fermentation. With this hopping technology they found the following results: hop enzymes do not contribute
to main fermentation, myrcene levels in finished beers
are very low, which was found favourable in this case.
Also, the production of 2M3MB an onion type of flavour
(derived from iso-alpha acid) is supressed due to a lower
H2S content in the beer.

USA: Constellation Brands’ sales up in Q4 thanks to stronger beer sales
|
Constellation Brands Inc. said sales rose in the latest quarter as stronger beer sales helped offset weakness in its lower-priced wine brands, MarketWatch reported on April 4.
Net sales for the Victor, N.Y., company, which produces Casa Noble Tequila, Cook's California Champagne and Svedka vodka, rose 2% from a year earlier to $1.8 billion. Analysts polled by FactSet expected $1.73 billion.
Beer sales in the fourth quarter rose 9.3% to $1.09 billion, driven by the Modelo and Corona brands.
Net sales in the wine and spirits segment declined 7.6% to $707.1 million. However, several high-end wine and spirits brands performed well, including Kim Crawford, Meiomi, Ruffino, the Prisoner portfolio and High West, Constellation said Thursday.
Profit rose to $1.24 billion, or $6.37 a share, up from $910.5 million, or $4.56 a share, a year earlier. Adjusted earnings totaled $1.84 a share, higher than the $1.72 a share expected by analysts polled by FactSet.
Constellation's stock rose 2.4% to $183.96 in early trading on April 4. Shares are down 19% in the last 12 months.
For fiscal 2020, the company guided adjusted earnings per share of $8.50 to $8.80. It also expects net sales of beer to grow 7% to 9% for fiscal 2020, while wine and

UK: Boom in gin sales and new lager boost Diageo’s Northern Ireland profits
|
A boom in gin sales and the launch of Rockshore lager helped drive turnover of over £194 mln at one of Diageo's Northern Ireland businesses last year, the Belfast Telegraph reported on April 5.
The drinks giant behind brands such as Guinness, Baileys, Smirnoff and Gordon's gin saw pre-tax profits rise 9.7% to £6.1 mln for its two Northern Ireland entities, Diageo NI Ltd and Diageo Global Supply IBC Ltd.
Diageo's presence here includes a £44 mln facility in Mallusk, where it produces Baileys for the global market. It also operates a bottling and packaging plant in east Belfast and runs a sales and marketing division.
Its turnover in Northern Ireland slipped from £195.2 mln to £194.7 mln in the 12 months to June 30, 2018, but the drinks company said that was largely down to new accounting practices within its Belfast-based global supply subsidiary, where revenues appeared to be down by £11.5 mln.
But turnover within Diageo NI Ltd rose 9% to £133.4 mln last year, driven by a growing market share for beers and spirits.
Last year saw Diageo successfully launch its new Rockshore brand, which quickly secured a considerable market share.
"Rockshore Irish Lager launched in Northern Ireland February 2018. It is now

Germany & USA & UK: Stone Brewing Berlin sold to Brewdog
|
Stone Brewing Berlin, Stone’s international production facility and bistro that opened in 2016, has been sold to Brewdog. The last operation day as Stone’s brewery is April 30th, the Beer Street Journal reported on April 5.
In 2010, Stone’s co-founder walked thorough the gasworks property and instantly wanted it to be the international home for America’s fiercely independent brewery. It took a few years, but Koch and team turned the historic building into Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens Berlin.
According to Koch, German beer prices are the cheapest in Western Europe, and the more expensive craft beers aren’t getting the foothold in the country as they planned.
Besides Germans’ reluctance to pay premium craft beer prices, Koch explains in a blog post that issues run a bit deeper than per-ounce prices. Disregarding the advice of his professional council, Koch outlines issues with his German contractors. Stone Berlin was a big project, and his Berlin contractors apparently didn’t adjust to unforeseen build-out challenges, construction questions, or slight changes in build scope. When these issues arose, construction was immediately halted. These shut-downs hurt the Stone Berlin project greatly.
“It cost us dearly. After talking with fellow business owners in Berlin, seems we’re not alone in

The Czech Republic: Major brewers planning dozens of new branded pubs this year
|
Major Czech brewing companies are planning to open dozens of new branded pubs this year, Hospodářské noviny reported on April 4. The move builds on a trend seen in recent years and is aimed at stemming a decline in consumption.
The country’s biggest brewing group, Pilsner Urquell-makers Plzeňský Prazdroj, is preparing to open its first pub under the brand name Pilsnerka in the coming months, the business daily reported.
A spokesperson said that the target group was young customers and that Pilsnerka hostelries, which will first appear in big Czech cities, would deliver a cool ambience and modern interiors.
Plzeňský Prazdroj already has another 130 brand pubs (under such names as Kozlovna and Plzeňka) around the Czech Republic, making it the market leader by some distance, Hospodářské noviny said.
In total the brewing company – which is owned by the multinational Asahi – plans to unveil around 20 more concept pubs before the close of 2019.
According to data from the brewing association Český svaz pivovarů a sladoven, since 2009 Czechs have consumed more beer at home than in the traditional pub.
This has led the country’s big brewers to focus more on creating attractive branded restaurants offering high-quality lager and
