Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation halts Rusape Chibuku Plant construction due to foreign currency shortage
|
Leading beverages manufacturer, Delta Corporation has been forced to halt the Rusape Chibuku Plant construction as the entity cannot raise enough foreign currency to import key components needed for the project, NewZimbabwe.com reported on April 26.
The entity’s corporate affairs director, Alex Makamure told delegates at a Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries meeting recently on the situation at hand.
“The brewery will be constructed in phases, starting with civil works that do not require foreign currency. The major phase is on hold due to shortage of foreign currency. The project is already behind as the company has exhausted the Chibuku Super capacity,” he said.
The new plant’s components are imported from Germany and South Africa, and have a lead time of eight months due to shipment logistics and full commissioning may take between 10 to 12 months from date of orders.
The latest development comes at a time the listed beverages manufacturer is eyeing Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev)’s Zambian and Malawian assets as the Belgian brewer exits the Sub-Saharan market.

Rwanda: Bralirwa’s pretax profit up 33% in 2018
|
Rwanda’s biggest brewer, Bralirwa Ltd, said on April 26 pretax profit rose 33 percent to 10.3 billion Rwandan francs ($11.39 million) in 2018, boosted by sales of its premium brand Mutzig, Reuters reported.
The rise in sales of premium beer offset weaker sales of its other beers and soft drinks, the beverage company, a subsidiary of Heineken N.V., said. Volumes fell by 13 percent to 1.7 billion Rwandan francs ($1.88 million) in 2018, it said.
Bralirwa is Rwanda’s oldest brewery and has the right to produce beer brands such as Amstel. It also produces branded soft drinks such as Coca-Cola.
Last year it launched local production of Heineken with a plan also to export it to neighboring countries. But Bralirwa said the strained relations between Rwanda and its neighbours Burundi and Uganda were affecting exports.
“This is something we hope will not last long. It being a landlocked country, it needs other countries for us to have access to the sea,” said Merid Demissie, its managing director.
“This is extremely important for us. The impact is not big but we definitely need those markets.”

UK: Heineken to invest £50 mln this year in transforming 150 of its pubs
|
Heineken unveiled plans to spend a record amount on transforming dozens of its pubs in the UK as the Dutch brewer searches for growth opportunities in a mature market even as the prospect of Britain leaving the EU looms, the Financial Times reported on April 25.
The world’s second largest brewer said on April 25 it will spend £50 mln this year on 150 pubs, raising its investment in hundreds of its Star Pubs & Bars businesses over the past six years to about £200 mln.
Its 2019 investment will be the most the brewer has ever spent on UK pubs in one year as, according to a company spokesperson, it sees the “value in bigger, bolder” projects. The plans for this year will create 1,200 jobs for the industry and will generate better returns for licensees, the Dutch brewer said.
Fierce competition from start-up food delivery groups and rising costs have weighed on many food and drinks companies, while others have been forced to rethink their business strategies. Mexico: Mexico City could ban sales of cold beer in convenience stores

Mexico City residents may have to slake their thirsts with warm beer after a local lawmaker introduced a motion on April 24 to ban the sale of the cold beverage in convenience stores, The Guardian reported.
The motion – met with incredulity on social media – would modify Mexico City’s commerce laws to ban selling beer or beverages of 7% or less alcohol content, which are “refrigerated or in different conditions than the ambient temperature.”
Stores would also be required to post signs warning patrons of stiff penalties for public drinking. Mexico City’s ubiquitous mom-and-pop stores often sell cold beer in big bottles – previously promoted as family-sized – and provide plastic cups, which people use to consume the product on-site.
The motion’s author Lourdes Paz Reyes posited the new rules would rid the city of so-called “chelerías,” which sell litres of beer in seedy settings for low prices.
Many Mexicans reacted with ridicule to the prospect of buying warm beer, especially given the frequently high temperatures. The hashtag #ConLasCervezasNo (Don’t mess with our beers) trended on Twitter.

India: Tamil Nadu sees 31% rise in beer sales in 2018-19
|
Warm weather and beer go together. So it should come as no surprise that beer is Tamil Nadu’s favourite tipple. Tasmac, the state-run coporation that sells all liquor in the state, has seen a 31% rise in beer sales in 2018-19, the Times of India reported on April 26.
Every third bottle of liquor sold in the state was beer. Data sourced by TOI revealed that 320 lakh cases of beer was sold in 2018-19, against 243 lakh cases in 2016-17. Fiscal 2017-18 is not taken into consideration as 60 per cent of TASMAC wine shops were closed after Supreme Court banned sale of liquor within 500 metres of highways from April 1, 2017. Later, closed shops were reopened following the apex court allowed the sale of liquor within 500 metres of highways in urban areas.
The growth in beer sales far outstripped the rise in total liquor sales, which was a modest 3%. Brandy continued to be the spirit of choice with 87% of tipplers. It was followed by rum and vodka for 10% and 2%. And, Chennai and its peripheries account for 25 per cent of Tasmac’s sales.
