Whisky news USA: Constellation Brands acquires majority stake in Tennessee-based Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery
Constellation Brands has acquired a majority stake in Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery, a Tennessee-based whiskey producer, marking the first time one of the company’s venture capital investments has been fully integrated into the company’s wine and spirits portfolio, FoodBev.com reported on May 2.

Constellation made its initial minority investment in the distillery through its venture capital arm in 2016, and the company decided to increase its stake after three years of collaboration with the distillery.

According to the company, the collaboration broadened Constellation’s knowledge of the craft whiskey space, and the acquisition of a majority stake has enhanced its presence in the high-end spirits space.

Nelson’s Green Brier was initially founded in 1860 but was forced to close following the introduction of prohibition in Tennessee in 1909. The distillery was then reconstructed in 2014 by Andy and Charlie Nelson, who began producing a whiskey using the distillery’s original recipe.

This is the latest investment in the premium spirits space, following on from the purchase of a minority stake in US-based Black Button Distilling earlier this year, which was also conducted through Constellation’s venture capital arm.

Constellation’s president and CEO Bill Newlands said: “Our ventures group was created to identify up-and-coming brands, and we’re excited about ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Growing number of craft breweries not locking in long-term hops contracts
A growing number of U.S. craft breweries are not locking in long-term hops contracts and that leaves those companies vulnerable as supply tightens, according to industry trade group the Brewers Association (BA), which surveyed 250 members to gain insight into how beer makers are managing one of the industry’s most important raw materials.

Speaking during a Power Hour webinar on April 30, BA supply chain specialist Chris Swersey said U.S. craft brewery owners need to lock in hop contracts or they risk missing out on accessing popular varieties.

Over the last two years, the number of breweries contracting for hops has declined significantly, according to the BA’s annual “Hop Survey.” In fact, just 63 percent of BA-defined craft breweries contracted for hops in 2018, down from 89 percent in 2017 and 96.6 percent in 2014.

Many of those companies make fewer than 2,500 barrels a year, the organization said, and have enjoyed somewhat easier access to a variety of hops at a time when supply outpaced demand. In 2018, just 45 percent of companies making fewer than 2,500 barrels per year contracted for hops, down from 71 percent in 2017 and 89 percent in 2016.

“This is a huge alarm bell for me and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Evil Twin Brewery puts down roots in Ridgewood
Evil Twin Brewery, one of the most successfully itinerant “gypsy” breweries in the world, is finally putting down roots in the Queens neighborhood of Ridgewood, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported on April 30.

Brookyn resident Jeppe Jarnit Bergso is the 43-year-old former Danish schoolteacher who started his virtual brewery in 2010, contracting with breweries in Connecticut, South Carolina and Massachusetts to produce his quirky, inventive concoctions with some of the most perverse and scatological names in the craft brewing world.

A gypsy brewer is a licensed brewer who contracts with a brewery it does not own to produce a beer, but Bergso is content to shed the gypsy title as Evil Twin becomes a household name with its own street address.

“You can see how happy I am to be working in my own brewery at last. I love it. I want to end my days here. This is my dream, man. I love growing a company and where Evil Twin is, and everybody knows us. But I like this stuff. I really love being involved in the day-to-day. I’m here. I’m tasting. I’m changing, I’m discussing. I’m adding—all that stuff,” Bergso said.

Brewery news USA, NM: Lauter Haus Brewing Co. prepares to open in Farmington
Lauter Haus Brewing Co. prepares to open this summer in Farmington, KOB reported on April 30.

"It's kind of crazy that there has only been one brewery for 22 years in Farmington. It's kind of unheard of. I mean Albuquerque's got what? 50?” Brandon Beard, owner of Lauter Haus Brewing Co. said.

The brewery will have an arcade and will focus on German style beers.

"I'm really into the German style of beer, traditional stuff," Beard said.

The brewery is in the process of licensing and hopes to have that complete in the next few months.

"If we can get past all that and get through all the licensing, we hope to hopefully be open end of July, mid-August," Beard said.

The owners plan on having a selection of eight beers when they open, but hope to expand upon that in the months that follow.

"Ever since I got into the brewing side of things, that is what I've wanted to do. And whenever I figured it out, I went with it," Beard said.

The brewery hopes to be another draw to the area for visitors and to be a launchpad for more business growth in Farmington.

"I think it's time for the northern part of the state to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Five Wits Brewing Company to open in Chattanooga this fall
Chattanooga native Nathan Michaels has returned to his hometown to open Five Wits Brewing Company with long-time Denver brewers Elliot Kehoe and Bryan Harris, the Chattanooga Times Free Press reported on April 30.

Five Wits Brewing Company will open this fall in the former Grocery Bar on Main Street, which closed in 2015.

The new venture will also house a restaurant incubator, R&D Test Kitchen, which will host a rotating line-up of up-and-coming aspiring chefs and restaurateurs from all over the country. These aspiring chefs will apply for a residency program to occupy and operate their restaurant concepts in the R&D Test Kitchen as the sole food offering for the Five Wits Brewing tap room.

After nearly a decade in the Mile-High city, Michaels said he decided to return to Chattanooga last year alongside two friends and tenured brewers, Kehoe and Harris, who met while working together at Great Divide Brewing in Denver.

"After spending so much time living in Denver and watching craft breweries in the city continue to grow, I became super passionate about not only the craft of brewing beer but also the opportunity to be a part of the community and culture that comes along with it," Michael said.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Joseph Bloor Brewery releases its first brand
A brewing company that pays tribute to one of Toronto’s earliest commercial brewers has announced the release of its first brand, the Canadian Beer News reported on April 30.

Joseph Bloor Brewery – a subsidiary of food and beverage company Canuck Brands Ltd. – is named after a Victorian businessman, landowner, and philanthropist who operated a brewery from 1830 to 1843 in the Rosedale Valley near the intersection of Sherbourne Street and First Concession Road, the latter now known as Bloor Street.

Currently brewing at Railway City Brewing in St. Thomas while scouting for a permanent home in Toronto – although as the owners jokingly note, they expect to be “unsuccessful in convincing the City to allow us to build on the original brewery site” – Joseph Bloor has launched with Joe Blo’ Bohemian Pilsner (4.7% abv, 30 IBU) which is described as follows:

Clear pale gold with a durable, creamy white head; clean aroma with hints of spiciness; this authentic Pilsner delivers a rich, pleasing well-balanced taste, medium bodied with a nice creamy texture; mellow bitterness gives way to a clean and crisp finish.

Joe Blo’ has been available at select licensees on a limited basis since last summer, and is now being ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Goodwood Brewing Co. opening second brew house in Indiana
Goodwood Brewing Co. is opening a second brew house.

The Louisville-based brewer is formally joining the Indiana craft beer scene on May 8 with the grand opening of Goodwood Brew House and Live Room at 134 Spring St. in Jeffersonsville. The event features a performance by Hairbangers Ball, and tickets are $10. Doors open at 8 p.m.

The brewery will share the building with recently opened Cox’s Hot Chicken, which sits about a block north of the riverfront.

The new space features pool tables, a stage and a deck. Live entertainment has always been a big part of the Goodwood experience, but the new setup creates more room for larger groups and dancing, Ted Mitzlaff, chairman and CEO of Goodwood, told the Courier Journal.

The Goodwood team had been scouting locations across the river for a while when the Cox team approached them last year about moving into the old Big Four Burgers location, Mitzlaff said.

The Jeffersonville site will have its own research and development style brewing system, which will create more opportunities for Goodwood Brewers to experiment with specialty India pale ales and stouts.

“It’s an art as much as it is a science, and it really lets them explore and show off ...More info on site

Brewery news New Zealand: Moa Group narrows trading loss in H2
Moa Group says it narrowed its trading loss in the second half of the financial year as it works towards breaking even after seven years of red ink since the beer brewer listed, Newsroom reported on May 2.

The company said its trading loss was NZ$600,000 in the six months ended March 31, excluding one-off costs, such as the undisclosed bill associated with the NZ$13 million acquisition of hospitality firm Savor Group. That implies Moa will report an annual trading loss of about NZ$2 million, compared to a loss of NZ$2.5 million in the March 2018 year.

Sales were up 15 percent for the year, implying revenue of NZ$12 million compared to the NZ$10.5 million a year earlier. The company said three of the last six months of trading were in profit.

"Moa Brewing Company continues to build toward break-even on a standalone basis, as demonstrated in recent summer months," executive chair Geoff Ross said in a statement.

The company has yet to turn a profit since its controversial listing in late 2012, when it included advertising in its investment statement and photographs of young women in skimpy outfits drinking beer. It sold shares at NZ$1.25 apiece, raising NZ$15 million to expand its Nelson ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: UK drinking less volume but more alcohol
It’s often said that the UK is consuming less when it comes to the volume of drinks, but the country may be imbibing more alcohol, The Drinks Business reported on April 30.

Those in the UK trade will know well the phrase, “less but better” when it comes to the world of alcoholic drinks, which is regularly used to sum up an overall trend of reducing alcohol consumption, but a move to more upmarket products.

Such a shift may be within categories, such as from lager to craft beers, blush rosé to dry Provençal pink, light Chianti to juicy Malbec, or cheap vodka to artisanal gin, and in all cases, there is move up in terms of price as well as alcohol by volume (ABV).

But more recent trends have also shown a switch across categories, with British drinkers moving from lighter drinks such as beer and wine to spirits, above all gin.

And it is this latter development that may mean that overall the UK is now drinking more pure alcohol than it was a decade ago.

As a result, having considered the major trends in the UK market at a Vinexpo briefing earlier this year, Mark Meek, who is CEO of the IWSR, ...More info on site

Brewery news India: United Breweries plans to sell 2 mln cases of Amstel this fiscal year
India's largest beer maker United Breweries Ltd plans to sell about two million cases of Amstel brand beer this fiscal and also enter the craft beer segment, the Weekend Leader reported on May 2 citing a senior official.

"Newer segments are emerging in the beer segment on price points. The Amstel brand beer is positioned as accessible premium brand priced about Rs 10-15 above the mass premium brand segment," said Gurpreet Singh, Divisional Vice President Marketing, on May 2.

"We will be launching Amstel beer in Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Maharashtra and also in the Eastern markets so as to have a national foot print," Singh said.

He said United Breweries hopes to sell about two million cases of Amstel beer by the end of this fiscal.

He said the company has launched the brand in Karnataka, Puducherry and Kerala with Tamil Nadu being the latest market.

Singh said Tamil Nadu is a strong beer market so, Amstel beer is launched early before other markets.

Speaking about the bottled craft beer segment (beer made in non-mechanised manner), Singh said it is a very small and an emerging market.

"The craft beer may account about one per cent of the total beer market in India, but occupies the ...More info on site
