Brewery news USA, VA: Blue Quartz Winery and Shotwell Run Brewing Company launching new Madison County location in a few weeks
Blue Quartz Winery and Shotwell Run Brewing Company will open a new location in Madison County in a few weeks, CBS19 News reported on May 13.

The new place will have a winery and brewery in the same location.

It's a dream 10 years in the making for Chris Wallin and her co-owners.

She said she's excited they finally made their dream come true.

"I can't wait to get it up and running," said Wallin. "Out of the four of us, I'm the most anxious to get it going. I feel like we've worked hard to get to this point and we're so excited to open."

They will have wine, beer and cider available to drink.

"We're going to have three wines," said Wallin. "We have a Viognier, a Merlot, a Cabernet Franc and a cider."

Billy Faggart, one of the co-owners and the brewer for the brewery, said they will mainly have four beers on tap and they will make some more as the seasons change.

"We're looking at a pale ale, a hefeweizen, a blonde, and an English bitter, a very light summer drinking beer," said Faggart.

Wallin believes having different types of alcohol will make the location an attractive spot for people to have a drink ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KY: Braxton Brewing Co. planning barrel-aging brewery for fall of 2019
Braxton Brewing Co., a Covington, KY brewery with national recognition, has announced major development plans to expand its presence to Fort Mitchell, Kentucky with the opening of the area’s first barrel-aging brewery and taproom, Brewbound reported on May 15.

Expected to open its doors in fall of 2019, the Braxton Barrel House will offer a unique experience for patrons by giving them the opportunity to create custom private barrel picks of Barrel-Aged brews. The Braxton Barrel House is a prime way to celebrate Kentucky’s rich bourbon culture while continuing to create the unique experiences for which the brewing company is known.

With the establishment of the Braxton Barrel House, the brewery will further cement itself as a true innovator. The location of the brewery and taproom is truly a unique space. Once a Remke grocery store, the 2,000 square foot loading dock will be redeveloped with large glass garage doors and a spacious outdoor patio. Then, the 20,000 square foot warehouse under the main floor will house the Barrel-Age beer, while a taproom for guests will sit on top. Ranging from $500 to $5,000, custom private barrel picks can yield upwards of 300 bottles of barrel aged beer.

Brewery news USA, CA: Tarantula Hill Brewing Company on track to be Thousand Oaks’ first restaurant/microbrewery
The people behind Tarantula Hill Brewing Company, on track to be Thousand Oaks’ first restaurant/microbrewery, are striving to make their soon-to-open location everyone’s favorite new hangout, the Thousand Oaks Acorn reported on May 16.

“We don’t call it our brewery, it’s Thousand Oaks’ brewery,” CEO Ali Zia said.

To that end, Zia and cofounders John Edney and Mike Orosco—all 1991 graduates of Thousand Oaks High School—have plenty of plans on tap.

Primarily, the brewery will have a family-friendly focus. While the kiddos can’t soak up the suds, the establishment will offer woodfired pizza—the shiny new oven is already in place—and premium ice cream made on site using the knowledge Edney gained through his family’s Hawaii-based Tropical Dreams Ice Cream Co. Don’t look for that label, however. Edney’s creations will be all his, often made from locally sourced ingredients.

“The main thing is our base is 18% butter fat so it’s very decadent to start,” Edney said. “We’ll do all the classics and lots of fun stuff for the kids, but then we’ll do some beer ice cream.”

For adults who don’t drink alcohol, the brewery will also offer its own blend of coffee. That, too, will likely get incorporated into ice cream.

The joint will also ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Medford officials looking at bringing potential brewery to the city
City officials will hold a public forum next week on potential breweries in Medford. The meeting will tackle zoning and current liquor license regulations, as well as offer residents the chance to ask questions or express support or concerns, Patch.com reported on May 16.

The meeting comes as Medford Brewing Company looks at opening the city's first brewery. The company, which has been contract brewing over the last couple years, launched a crowdfunding campaign in late February seeking investors for its own brewery.

The Wefunder campaign has raised over $200,000 in three months. It would fund one of two options – a large operation in West Medford or a scaled-down location in Medford Square – based on how much money is raised, co-founder Nick Bolitho told Eater.

A brewery would save the company money on beer production while allowing it to host local fans at its taproom.

The public forum will be held Wednesday, May 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the Alden Memorial Chambers at Medford City Hall. Staff from the Building, Health and Police Department and licensing commissioners will be in attendance.

Brewery news USA, OH: Planted Flag Brewery breaks ground in Medina
Cruise down the curvy Pearl Road in Medina County, and the sign for Planted Flag Brewery is easy to miss, Cleveland.com reported on May 16.

It's not a brewery yet. It's a field of gravel and weeds, but owners Aaron and Karen Wirtz broke ground with friends, family and supporters on May 15.

It actually was more than a groundbreaking. Aaron Wirtz thanked everyone involved, including support and advice from local brewers - Vaughn Stewart of Bookhouse Brewing, Karl Spiesman of Brick and Barrel, Corey Miller of Hansa Brewery, Shaun Yasaki of Noble Beast Brewing, Mike Piazza of Blue Heron Brewery, and Wirtz' boss, Matt Vann of The Jolly Scholar.

Wirtz is head brewer for The Jolly Scholar, which is currently seeking his replacement.

Planted Flag's target construction completion date is mid- to late October with opening by the end of the year, Wirtz said.

The nearest breweries would be Medina County neighbors Lager Heads, about 3 miles to the south; Blue Heron Brewery, about 7 to 8 miles away; and Wadsworth Brewing, about 15 miles away. Fat Head's Brewery is about 16 miles up Interstate 71.

When completed at 3594 Pearl Road, the 3,100-square-foot, 60-seat restaurant-brewery will be "a reflection of its owners and community," ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: One Barrel Brewing Co. set to open second location in Egg Harbor
Since 2012, One Barrel Brewing Co. has been serving up its brews on Atwood Avenue to its Madison-based audience. Now, the reach of One Barrel is getting even larger as it's set to open a second location in Door County's Egg Harbor, the Madison Magazine reported on May 15.

One Barrel, which is known for beers like The Commuter, Penguin Pale Ale, Fanny Pack and Banjo Cat, was Madison's first nanobrewery.

The new Door County location will have a taproom in addition to a beer garden. Along with One Barrel's signature beers, Wild Tomato Wood Fired Pizza and Grille—a Door County restaurant with two locations—is opening within the taproom. Wild Tomato aims to use sustainable and local products to create pizza, salads, sandwiches and burgers.

The grand opening will be Memorial Day weekend, May 23-27.

Brewery news USA, VA: WildManDan Beercentric Bed and Breakfast becomes licensed brewery
The WildManDan Beercentric Bed and Breakfast in Afton has been open for several years, but it's officially become a licensed brewery within the last few months, CBS19 News reported on May 14.

Dan Tatarka, also known as WildManDan, has been an avid home brewer and beer judge over the years.

Since opening, members of the bed and breakfast were able to share their beer with people staying there but were unable to allow for sales of their products.

All that has changed in the last few months. WildManDan has received its licensing to become an official Virginia brewery.

This means it can now sell its beer to customers at its tasting room next to the main house as well as sell beer to go in growlers.

The bed and breakfast itself is a way for people to unwind and meet interesting people while drinking freshly made craft beer after enjoying a day of hiking or visiting other drinking destinations.

A beer and a hug is the first thing you experience within just minutes of arriving at the property.

"We have a couple beers on tap that is part of staying at the bed and breakfast," said Terri Tatarka, one of the owners.

There are five bedrooms within the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Big Trout Brewing Company eyeing October opening in Winter Park
Throughout the snow-covered months, construction workers in Winter Park have been repurposing the first floor of the Vasquez Street parking garage to house a new transit center, public amenities and retail space.

With the snow mostly melted, Cooper Creek announced the first tenant of the space as Big Trout Brewing Company, owned by locals Tom and Emily Caldwell, the Sky Hi News reported on May 14.

“I think it’s a contribution not just to Cooper Creek, but to the whole downtown,” said Charlie Johnson, a principal at WC Johnson, which owns Cooper Creek.

In partnership with the town of Winter Park, the 5,500 square foot space will also act as a stop for The Lift, giving people a large enclosed space to wait. The town contributed $500,000 for construction costs related to the transit center when they approved the project in October.

The town also hopes to include a ticket kiosk for people to purchase Winter Park Resort lift tickets, as well as Greyhound and Amtrak tickets. Other amenities will include a coffee kiosk, patio, public restrooms, a trash area, building storage and a bike washing station.

Johnson refrained from giving a timeline for when construction will be done or an opening date, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Mechanistic Brewing already serving its beer in Clarion
Craft beer is now flowing from the taps of Mechanistic Brewing at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Liberty Street as Clarion’s newest brewery holds “soft” openings on Saturdays in May, GANT News reported on May 15.

George and Chelsea Alexander, of Clarion, have nursed the idea of starting a new brewery in Clarion for over six years, and now it is almost time.

“We’re having soft openings during the month of May while we try to work through the kinks,” said George. “Right now, it’s open 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturdays. In June we want to establish some summer hours, but it is still going to be weekends and maybe some Fridays. We don’t want to expand our hours too quickly.”

There are about six employees working part time, and the couple will wait to see if additional help is needed. The business is a work of love, but definitely a side project for the couple who have two small children.

George is a geochemist and environmental engineer working on contaminated groundwater related to nuclear waste sites, and Chelsea works part-time for her father at F.L. Crooks and Company.

“We will always want to have a mix or a range of beers,” ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Columbia River Brewing Co. closes its doors for good
Columbia River Brewing Co., which has been operating in Northeast Portland for nearly nine years, is the latest local brewery to close its doors, OregonLive reported on May 16.

The brewery opened in 2010 in the former Laurelwood Pizza space at 1728 N.E. 40th Ave. Its last day was May 15, according to the Hollywood Boosters Business Association.

The brewery is the latest in a recent string of Portland closures, including Burnside Brewing, BridgePort Brewing and Alameda Brewhouse.

Columbia River Brewing’s Stumbler’s Stout had won silver medals at the World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival, according to beer-industry blog The New School, which reported last week about the closure.

Brewery news China: AB InBev gearing for major push in China
The world's top brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev is gearing up for a major push into the Chinese market by targeting high-end beer consumers - a demographic also coveted by its biggest rival, Heineken, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on May 14.

To bankroll that endeavor, AB InBev will list its Asian business in Hong Kong as soon as this summer, in what could be this year's largest initial public offering in Asia.

Although China's beer sales peaked in 2013 by volume, sales by value surged nearly 40% between that year and 2018, based on provisional numbers. The price per unit jumped thanks to the popularity of premium beer.

For years, Chinese have appreciated cheap beer, favoring the kind sold in 500 millilitre cans for roughly 55 cents. Lately, their tastes have expanded along with their wallets during the country's economic boom that has led to a rise in popularity for imported craft beers, which sell for about $3.

Goose Island Beer, a craft beer under AB InBev’s umbrella, has seen its Shanghai brewhouse grow into a popular hangout for young professionals. "Although the 50 yuan ($7) drinks are a bit on the high end, I'm not too concerned about the price," said a 34-year-old startup ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Barley markets under pressure from large stocks and crops
The feed barley market in the UK is following wheat down, suffering from similar issues, including larger new-crop prospects and dulled demand, FarmersWeekly reported on May 15.

In the feed market, there is also sustained competition from good availability of maize.

UK’s barley use in animal feed in the year to the end of March was 1.037 mln tonnes – a drop of 14.4% compared with the previous 12 months and the lowest level for six years.

Wheat use at almost 4.9 mln tonnes was up just 1.6%, while maize use in the same period rose almost 64% to 559,000 tonnes.

UK barley exports have been relatively quiet this season, says AHDB Cereals and Oilseeds. Stronger sterling has pressured prices and there has been strong competition from Black Sea supplies.

New-crop harvest prices are between £110-£118/t ex-farm as available – a discount of up to £11/t off old-crop prices. However, some regions are seeing little, if any, difference between old- and new-crop values.

The Brexit delay until 31 October has stymied new-crop barley export prospects, other than for harvest and immediately post-harvest.

Russia, Ukraine and Canada look like planting more barley, but Chinese demand is uncertain because of African swine fever.

Barley news Ukraine: Barley harvest seen increasing to 7.9 mln tonnes
Favourable weather this winter and spring will allow Ukraine to increase its 2019 wheat harvest to 26.2 million tonnes and its barley harvest to 7.9 million, the APK-Inform consultancy said on May 15.

But the country is likely to cut its corn production to 33.1 million tonnes from a record 35.6 million tonnes in 2018, the consultancy said in a statement.

Ukraine’s overall grain harvest may decrease slightly to 69.3 million tonnes this year from a record 69.8 million last year, it said.

Brewery news Malaysia: Carlsberg Malaysia pledges not to increase prices
Carlsberg Malaysia has pledged not to increase the prices of any of its beers for the rest of this year, as the company prepares for the country’s impending sugar tax this July, FoodNavigator-Asia reported on May .

Carlsberg Malaysia Managing Director Lars Lehmann told FoodNavigator-Asia that: “We do not have any plan to adjust product prices to distributors and retailers this year, after the last adjustment that took effect on April 1st.

“The upcoming sugar tax will only impact our Nutrimalt and Jolly Shandy brands, which is relatively minimal.”

He added that ‘barring any unforeseen regulatory or macroeconomic factors’, any future price adjustments would be ‘kept at a minimum’ to ensure product affordability and competitiveness.

Carlsberg Malaysia had raised its product prices by 3% to 6% earlier this year on April 1, the initial date that the country’s sugar tax was supposed to be enforced before it was postponed by three months to July 1.

Back then, the main reason cited for the price hike was escalating malt and barley prices, which remain chief concerns for the company currently, though it appears that no problems are foreseen with their supply for the rest of 2019.

“We have seen a significant increase in the costs of ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Competition intensifies in Japan’s beer-like beverages segment
Competition has been intensifying again in Japan’s market of “third-segment” beer-like beverages, The Japan News reported on May 17.

Last year, combined shipments of beer and “happoshu” low-malt quasi-beer declined for the 14th straight year, but third-segment beverages with little or no malt content saw their shipments rise 3.7 percent, the first increase in five years.

Popularity of the third-segment drink was reignited by Honkirin, released by Kirin Brewery Co. in March 2018.

More than 10 million cases of Honkirin were sold in the first 10 months since the product hit store shelves. A case contains the equivalent of 20 633-milliliter bottles.

The product mimics the taste and feel of beer, but its 350-milliliter can sells about ¥80 cheaper than authentic beer products of the same size. Honkirin is luring consumers in their 40s and 50s.

Other breweries followed suit with their own new releases of third-segment beverages. In January this year, Asahi Breweries Ltd. launched the Gokujo Kireaji, which performed so well that the maker raised the annual sales target in April from 3 million cases to 4 million.

Suntory Beer Ltd. revamped its flagship Kinmugi series for the first time in 13 years in January. In particular, the Kinmugi Gold Lager, a new product, ...More info on site
