USA, CA: Border X Brewing joins Los Angeles’ beer community
|
There's a revolution brewing in Los Angeles. Craft beer is soaring in popularity and breweries are sprouting throughout the city. Now on tap is Border X Brewing--infusing the L.A. beer-scape with their own Latino flavor, KABC-TV reported on May 24.
"What we're trying to do through our beer, through our music, and through the artists that we partner with, is really understand this expression of the Latino identity in contemporary times," said David Favela, founder and CEO of Border X Brewing.
"It was really just an idea for family to come together and do something that we all loved, which was making beer," said Favela. "What we found is when we made beer with our culture, with our roots and we put it into our beer, we didn't just love it. Everybody loved it."
Border X Brewing draws its name from its original location by the U.S.-Mexico border. The brewery then moved to Barrio Logan-one of the longest standing Latino neighborhoods in San Diego and home to Chicano Park, a National Historic Landmark. Their new L.A. satellite opened in the City of Bell, a thriving Latino suburb in Southeast Los Angeles. And while, for some in the area, craft beer might still be

USA, KY: Country Boy Brewing breaks ground on $1.8 mln expansion of its production brewery in Georgetown
|
Country Boy Brewing, one of Kentucky’s most popular and innovative craft brewers, announced on May 23 that it is breaking ground on a $1.8 million expansion of its production brewery and taproom located in Georgetown, KY.
The nearly 19,000 sq/ft expansion will house additional storage, a future testing lab, and future canning line - expanding the production capacity and efficiency of the brewery. Along with the additional four acres, the brewery acquired in the business park last year, this expansion should allow the brewery to produce upwards of 30,000 barrels of beer.
“The support and excitement around the brewery in Georgetown is amazing,” said Co-Founder and Brand Manager Daniel “DH” Harrison. “We want to continue to expand, and we need more space in order to do so. We never dreamed we would be expanding so soon, but this business and community have continued to amaze us.”
Jack Conner, Executive Director of Scott County United, Inc. said, “The latest investment by Country Boy Brewing, at the Lanes Run Business Park, attests to the strength of our manufacturing partners who continue to meet our highest economic development priority – retention and expansion of our successful companies. We welcome their investment and their confidence in our

USA: US court rules partially in favour of Molson in ad row with AB InBev
|
A U.S. court on May 24 barred Anheuser Busch InBev NV, the world’s largest beer maker and brewer of Budweiser brand beers, from using parts of its marketing that said rival Molson Coors Brewing Co’s MillerCoors used corn syrup in the production of its light beers, Reuters reported.
In February, Anheuser Busch aired a one-minute Bud Light commercial during the National Football League’s Super Bowl championship game that taunted Molson Coors for adding corn syrup, a sweetener, to its Miller Lite and Coors Light brews.
Federal court judge William Conley of the Western District of Wisconsin ruled partially in favor of Molson Coors in a lawsuit against Anheuser Busch for false advertising and misuse of the Miller and Coors trademarks.
In his ruling, Conley said Anheuser Busch had hoped to exploit confusion surrounding the use of corn syrup in beer production, and that “consumers would interpret advertising statements about ‘made with corn syrup’ or ‘brewed with corn syrup’ as corn syrup actually being in the final products.”
MillerCoors, the U.S. arm of Molson Coors, has said that Miller Lite and Coors Light do use corn syrup, while Bud Light uses rice, to aid fermentation. But it says that the sweetener gets consumed by the

USA, NJ: Neck of the Woods Brewing officially opens its doors in Pitman
|
It’s been a long road but as noted in a recent Instagram post, Neck of the Woods Brewing in Pitman has finally opened its doors (and tasting room) to the public this month, the New Jersey Monthly reported on May 23.
The brewery is the brainchild of friends and craft enthusiasts Paul McIntyre, Frank Price, Dave Surdam and Bruce Lowden. They come from different professional backgrounds, drawn by a shared love of craft beer. Among their inaugural offerings are a Session IPA and a blueberry Berliner Weisse (both ideal for summer drinking). For now, the tasting room is open only Thursday through Sunday, but—bonus points—the brewery is located in the Total Turf sports complex, so there’s ample opportunity to burn off those beer calories.

USA, WI: Thirsty Pagan Brewing moves to bigger location in Superior
|
Superior’s Thirsty Pagan Brewing has moved from its Broadway Street location into the Soo Line Depot on Winter Street, Fox 21 reported on May 22.
They plan to have a grand opening on June 8th.
After renting the space at Broadway Street, the Brewery closed shop there. They now own this new location.
According to owners, with more seating and performance space for 7 days a week of live music, and their own parking lot, business should be booming.
“We project 20–30% increase in everything: in consumption of our product, in consumption of our culture,” said co-owner Steve Knauss.
“And what’s gonna happen is with that we’re gonna be able to be better advocates for our community, better donators to organizations that we believe in, and this will become a better place because of that.”
The owners invested roughly half-a-million dollars in the complete renovation of the new location, with help from the city of Superior in a grant worth $50,000.
They hope the new space allows the business to give back to the community.
“We want to make this building an amazing community space, we want to give back to the community,” co-owner Deb Emery said. “We already have reunions scheduled here for a venue, this summer

USA: Constellation Brands subsidiary fined for trade practice violations
|
Crown Imports, a subsidiary of drinks giant Constellation Brands, has been fined US$420,000 by the US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) for alleged “trade practice violations” in Chicago, The Drinks Business reported on May 28.
In a newsletter published on 24 May, the TTB announced that it had accepted a “$420,000 offer in compromise from Crown Imports LLC for alleged trade practice violations”.
In a supporting document, it claimed that Crown Imports, which has a portfolio of beer brands including Corona Extra, Corona Light, Modelo Especial, Pacifico, Negra Modelo and Victoria, had “engaged in activities and conduct that violated 27 U.S.C 205(b).”
Expanding on this, it claimed that Crown had entered into agreements or understandings with retailers in Illinois indirectly through an independent third party or an affiliate of the retailer. Payment of these parties resulted in the retailer receiving money for “advertising, display and distribution services” relating to Crown’s portfolio of beer brands. In sum, Crown effectively paid to gain shelf space for its products.
According to the TTB, the violations occurred during the period 1 January 2016 and 25 April 2019 at an address in Chicago, Illinois.
This comes after a number of companies including Heineken USA and Eagle Brands

Ukraine: Winter barley harvest could rise to 3.3 mln tonnes this year
|
Ukraine’s 2019 winter wheat harvest is likely to rise 8.4 percent to 25.9 million tonnes due to a higher yield, APK-Inform consultancy said on May 28, citing state weather forecasters.
It said the winter barley harvest could rise to 3.3 million tonnes this year from 2.9 million tonnes a year earlier.
Analysts say the winter wheat yield could total 4.0 tonnes per hectare, while the yield for barley may be 3.3 tonnes. Last year, the winter wheat yield was 3.73 tonnes per hectare and winter barley was 3.35 tonnes.
Winter wheat dominates Ukrainian wheat harvest, accounting for more than 95 percent of the planted wheat area. Ukraine harvested a total of 24.6 million tonnes of wheat in 2018.
The agriculture ministry has said this year’s wheat harvest could total 26.9 million tonnes.

Sri Lanka & China: Sri Lankan beer trying to conquer Chinese consumers
|
Ranil Oninda recently did a "brave" thing - promoting Sri Lankan beer in Qingdao, a coastal Chinese city best known for its century-old brewer Tsingtao, China.org.cn reported on May 29.
As a marketing consultant for Lion Holdings Trading (Shenzhen) Limited, Oninda distributed the signature black beer to visitors for a taste in the just-concluded Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) International Trade and Investment Fair.
The three-day fair which closed on May 26 attracted more than 400 companies and other institutions, including over 150 from overseas. The fair exhibits the cultural industries, tourism, home appliances and other products of SCO member states.
It was not the first time for him to showcase the Lion beer from Sri Lanka in China. "With closer trading ties between the two countries, it is easier to do business with Chinese clients," he said.
Two months ago, Oninda brought 48 containers of roughly 2.5 million bottles of Lion beer to China. The beers have been quickly snapped up by customers in provinces such as Guangdong, Hubei and Hunan.
Even if the first battle was won, Oninda still worried before marching to Qingdao in Shandong Province, the birthplace of the world-famous Tsingtao beer. Beer drinking is a distinctive lifestyle in Qingdao, where picky

UK: Pub giants stock beer over fears of no-deal Brexit
|
About £6 million of Spanish lager Estrella Damm was snapped up by Marston’s pub chain ahead of the original March deadline for our EU exit – scheduled for October, the Daily Star reported on May 25.
The Wolverhampton-based firm said it had banked about three months’ worth of stock.
While most of Marston’s drinks are brewed here, the popular lager is imported from Barcelona.
Now, other pub chains say they are preparing for the possibility of a no-deal Brexit.
Greene King, which runs 2,900 pubs, said it was continuing to monitor the withdrawal negotiations and had identified “key areas of risk” to its business from the feared outcome.
A spokesman said: “We’re working closely with our supply-chain partners to safeguard the continued supply of goods to our pubs and breweries, as well as the export of our beers.”
The UK’s pub and brewing industry supports almost 900,000 jobs and contributes more than £23billion to the economy.
But Brigid Simmonds, head of the British Beer & Pub Association, which represents pub chains, downplayed fears of beer shortages.
She said: “Around 82% of the beer sold in the UK is brewed here, mainly using British hops and barley. We can produce as much as 10million pints of beer per day,
