Canada: CMBTC provides latest update on Canada’s barley plantings
|
Canadian Prairies are experiencing above normal temperatures this week with below normal precipitation. Parts of Saskatchewan are seeing temperatures in the high 20°s and low 30°s this week, CMBTC said in its latest update on the nation’s barley crops on May 30.
Weather analysts suggest that Western Canada will have below average rainfall this summer, although drought-like conditions are not expected. They are also predicting lower than normal summer temperatures for Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
The area of most concern is the region from Edmonton east into the upper section of Saskatchewan, going through North Battleford, Saskatoon, Humboldt, Melfort and Tisdale. One constant throughout the Prairies is that emergence has been slow due to the cooler temperatures that have plagued the west through the month of May.
Alberta
• Southern region (Foremost, Lethbridge, Strathmore): This area has had good rains in the last week and this has helped advance its crops. The area received between 12.5 mm-25 mm (1/2-1 inch) of precipitation.
• Central region (Airdrie, Olds): Barley seeding is complete in this area. To date the crop is germinating well, however the region will need rain in the next two weeks. Crop conditions at this time are ranked 80%, good to excellent.
• Northeast region

USA & Mexico: Constellation Brands' stock drops 6% as new tariffs could raise Corona, Modelo import costs
|
Shares of Constellation Brands STZ dropped more than 6% in premarket trading on May 31 on the back of President Donald Trump 's threat to slap tariffs on all Mexican imports, Yahoo Finance reported.
The drop put the maker of Mexican beers like Corona and Modelo on track for its biggest one-day loss since Jan. 9, when it fell 12.4%.
On May 30, Trump tweeted the state will impose a 5% tariff on all goods coming from Mexico starting June 10 "until such time as illegal migrants coming through Mexico, and into our Country, STOP."
The White House then said in a statement that levies on Mexican imports would increase up to 25% if immigration issues along the U.S.-Mexico border persisted. Mexico President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador responded to the threat in a letter to Trump, saying: "Social problems cannot be resolved with taxes or coercive measures."
Tariffs on Mexican goods would dent Constellation Brands' stock and bottom line. According to Morgan Stanley, about 75% of its beer portfolio is "entirely imported" from Mexico. The bank also notes that a 5% tariffs on Mexican goods would shave off nearly 4% from the company's overall bottom line. A 25% levy, meanwhile, would slash Constellation Brands'

Canada: Ontario’s Brick Brewing Co. reports higher EBITDA, net revenue in Q1 this year
|
Brick Brewing Co. Limited, Ontario’s largest Canadian-owned brewery, on May 30 released financial results for the first quarter which ended April 28, 2019.
Brick reported EBITDA of C$1.65 million (+47%) on net revenue of C$12.3 million (up 16%). The adoption of IFRS 16 (leases) enhanced EBITDA by C$0.2 million in the first quarter.
George Croft, Brick President and Chief Executive Officer commented, “Our EBITDA results in the first quarter were strong, delivering both volume and top line growth. I am pleased with the premiumization of our portfolio and the continued success of our co-pack business. Our Waterloo family grew 11%, LandShark® and Margaritaville® brands grew 55%, and co-pack business grew 14% versus prior year. The overall beer category experienced softness driven by an unseasonably cold and wet spring which drove the Ontario industry volume lower by 2.2%. Our Laker family was most impacted by both the industry volume softness and very aggressive pricing on National mainstream brands, declining 10% vs prior year. We have adjusted our Laker business plans to address this trend and early indications are showing positive results with +1% volume growth in the last four weeks.”
“January 2019 saw us break ground on the 65,000 square foot

USA, NY: Jamestown Brewing Company to open for business on July 12
|
The Jamestown Brewing Company in downtown Jamestown will be opening for business on Friday, July 12. The company made the announcement on its Facebook page on May 24.
The brewery was originally planned to be opened in the spring of 2018 but several unforeseen delays in renovation of the property on the southeast corner of W. Third and Washington streets kept pushing the opening date back.
In recent months construction has been slowed by litigation between the developers of the brewery and the property owners and redeveloper GPatti Enterprises. That matter is still playing out in State Supreme Court in Erie County.
According to the Post-Journal, the total project cost for renovating the property and preparing it specifically for Jamestown Brewing was estimated at $3.84 million. Financing for the project included a $1 million in funding from the Downtown Revitalization Initiative Grant the city received in 2017, plus $475,000 state Main Street grant that was awarded through the Regional Economic Development Council program in December 2015. The Jamestown Local Development Corporation has a $180,000 loan attached to the project. The Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency also offered tax abatements for the property.
Once open the business is expected to employ between 30 and

Alebird Taphouse and Brewery celebrated its grand opening on May 24 in Byron Center, MI, GRMAG reported.
The 9,200-square-foot building at 2619 84th St. SW was formerly Byron Center Hotel.
Alebird purchased the building in November 2016. The brewery addition was submitted to Byron Township for approval in April 2017 and construction on the brewery started in December 2017.
The main floor houses a kitchen, bar and 90-seat dining area. The second floor has also been remodeled and features a banquet room for rental or added dining capacity.

Canada, AB: Wood Buffalo Brewing closes down
|
Wood Buffalo Brewing, the Fort McMurray location of Alberta brewpub chain Bear Hill Brewing, has closed down after approximately six-and-a-half years in business, the Canadian Beer News reported on May29.
According to a report in Fort McMurray Today, a number of factors contributed to the closure:
The first major hit to the craft brewery and pub, which opened in 2013, was the global collapse in oil prices that began in late 2014 and worsened the following year. Then there was the May 2016 wildfire.
Both events resulted in thousands of people leaving Fort McMurray, while disposable income became tighter for remaining residents. [Bear Hill CEO Brett Ireland] also admits changes to the menu chased away some regular patrons.
But the biggest hit was a combination of the failed municipal plan to reshape downtown with an arena project, and new housing and commercial developments north of the Athabasca River.
“With the arena not opening up and the movie theatre relocating uptown, it just seems the city is more focused with developing uptown,” said Isaac Van Nie, managing partner of the brewery. “It’s kind of depressing going downtown.”
While the Wood Buffalo brewing facility is no longer in operation, several of its brands including Northern Dark Black Lager
