USA: Beer consumption is shrinking but craft beer still rules
|
In 1873 there were 4,131 breweries in the U.S. Over the next century the number fell and fell, hitting a low—not counting Prohibition, when it went to zero—of only 89 in 1978. It wasn’t that Americans had stopped drinking beer; overall consumption was higher than ever. But the business was following the path of so many others in the Industrial Age, consolidating and squeezing ever more out of each manufacturing facility, Bloomberg reported on June 17.
Then in the 1980s, something not so typical happened. Craft breweries started opening, eventually by the thousands. Last year there were 7,450 breweries in the U.S., according to the Brewers Association, a craft-beer trade group. Brewery tallies from the Department of the Treasury and the Bureau of Labor Statistics are lower but show a similar growth trajectory, and the BLS estimates brewery employment has more than tripled since 2010, to 80,774 as of December.
Beer consumption, reports beverage data analyst IWSR, fell in the U.S. in 2018 for the second year in a row after several years of virtually unchanged sales. This might mean the brewery boom is destined to stall, but a boom amid falling sales could also be a sign of something more interesting.

Hong Kong: AB InBev’s Asia Pacific unit to start gauging investor demand for Hong Kong IPO
|
Budweiser Brewing Company APAC Ltd., the Asia Pacific unit of the world’s biggest brewer, starts gauging investor demand on June 28 for a proposed Hong Kong initial public offering, Bloomberg reported on June 17.
The arm of Anheuser-Busch InBev SA tentatively plans to meet investors through June 28, according to terms for the deal obtained by Bloomberg. The offering could raise at least $5 billion, people familiar with the matter have said.
At $5 billion, the share sale would be the city’s second biggest this year if Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. goes ahead with its Hong Kong listing that could raise as much as $20 billion. The Chinese e-commerce giant filed confidentially with the city’s exchange to sell shares, Bloomberg News reported last week.
Budweiser plans to use all the proceeds from the Hong Kong offering to repay debt in Korea in full and a shareholder loan to AB InBev partially, the terms show.
Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase & Co. are joint sponsors for the offering, according to a preliminary prospectus filed to the Hong Kong stock exchange.

Thailand: ThaiBev shares seen as one of top picks among Singapore-listed consumer stocks
|
CGS-CIMB Research says Thai Beverage is one of its top picks among Singapore-listed consumer stocks, given the kingdom’s improving domestic beer consumption, The Edge Singapore reported on June14.
CGS-CIMB also favours ThaiBev due to the strength in the Thai baht and also its valuation gap to other Thai-listed peers.
“We expect the share price to perform well when results deliver,” says CGS-CIMB which is maintaining ThaiBev at “buy”.
In April, domestic beer consumption was up 21% y-o-y, reversing from the slow demand growth in March, according to Thailand’s Office of Industrial Economics.
Although the inclusion of Sabeco and exports could have distorted ThaiBev’s y-o-y numbers, CGS-CIMB says - on a 7-month basis from Oct 2018 to April – the kingdom’s beer consumption has grown 9% y-o-y.
“We believe ThaiBev will grow in tandem, given that it is the second-largest beer player in the market with an approximate 40% market share,” says analyst Juliana Cai in a report published on June 13.
Meanwhile, Thailand retail sales were up 12% y-o-y in the last two quarters while farm income was stable.

Myanmar: Myanmar to allow import of foreign alcohol
|
Myanmar’s Ministry of Commerce has drafted regulations that would allow the import of foreign alcohol, a senior official says, and in the process overturn a decades-old ban that has encouraged rampant smuggling, the Frontier Myanmar reported on June 18.
The rules have come out of a review that the President’s Office initiated earlier this year at a meeting of the National Economic Coordination Committee, said U Khin Maung Lwin, an assistant secretary in the office of the minister for commerce.
The Ministry of Commerce was put in charge of the review and has formed a committee led by the deputy minister that also includes the permanent secretaries of other ministries.
The committee is examining not only the import but also the manufacture and distribution of alcohol, as well as excise rules, said Khin Maung Lwin.
“Our ministry has drafted rules outlining the procedure for foreign liquor imports. The committee is reviewing the rules in cooperation with other ministries. [Imports] will be allowed once consultation with the ministries has been completed,” he said.
A spokesperson for French distilling giant Pernod Ricard’s Myanmar partnership said the review was “a very positive move” that would be welcomed by the foreign business community.

Malawi: Higher taxes on alcohol may force Castel Malawi to shut down operations
|
Castel Malawi Limited has disclosed that it could close its operations in the country due to high taxes charged by Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) on alcoholic beverages, the Malawi24 reported on June 18.
According to a memo signed by Castel Malawi Limited Managing Director Herve Milhade, MRA is now to be getting 90 percent on production cost as tax.
Milhade said the excise tax charged by MRA is to affect the performance, cash flow and survival of the company.
The Castel boss also disclosed to have been unsuccessful in a meeting with MRA officials to revise the tax that has been charged to the company.
He added that MRA on June 17 “garnisheed” Castel Malawi Limited’s accounts.
“These actions by MRA mean that Castel Malawi LTD is at risk of closure and withdrawal of Castel Groupe from the country due to unrealistic and unaffordable excise calculations,” reads part of the memo.
The Castel boss however assured employees that the company will put in every effort to turn things around and save their jobs.
French Groupe Castel bought the brewery from Danish company Carlsberg in 2016. Carlsberg was established in Malawi in 1968.

Canada: Barley supply down 4% from 2017-18
|
For 2018-19, the supply of barley in Canada fell by 4% from 2017-18 to 9.7 million tonnes, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reported on June 14.
Exports are forecast to increase by 5% to almost 3.0 mln tonnes.
Total domestic barley use is expected to decrease mainly on lower feed use, waste and dockage (FWD).
Carry-out stocks are forecast to drop by 28% to 0.9 mln tonnes, which is 44% lower than the past five year average.
World barley production for 2018-19 is estimated at the lowest level in six years, according to USDA. Carry-out stocks will be historically low, including a steep decline in major exporters. Due to lower imports by China and Saudi Arabia, world trade is expected to decrease. Amid tight supplies, world prices for feed barley have been very strong, compared to corn prices. Combined with abundant supplies of corn worldwide, corn has been used as an alternative crop for feed barley in some countries. As a result of lower supplies and strong demand, the feed barley price at Lethbridge is forecast at C$255/t, about 12% higher than last year. The average Prairie malting barley price is 17-24% higher than last year.

Australia & China: Australia barley exports to China could fill 2900 Olympic sized swimming pools

The amount of Australian barley exported to China every year could fill 4.5 Melbourne Cricket Grounds or 2900 Olympic sized swimming pools, the Grain Central reported on June 17.
It’s Australia’s largest barley market, which is why the Australian barley industry is so committed to maintaining and enhancing the long-term relationship with Chinese brewers, maltsters, processors and traders through continual technical support.
Last week the Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre (AEGIC) and Barley Australia hosted two Australian Barley Technical Conferences in Guangzhou and Beijing, in collaboration with Seed Force, University of Adelaide and Victorian grain grower Simon Tickner.
Three Australian government agencies – DFAT, DAWR and Austrade – provided support.
AEGIC barley markets manager Mary Raynes said the conferences had been run for three years and were highly valued by attendees.
“These events are an effective way to help maintain and enhance the excellent relationship between the Australian barley industry and the Chinese brewing industry in the long term,” she said.
“The response this year was again excellent, with 130 people choosing to take part, including representatives of brewing companies, maltsters, traders and students.”
Ms Raynes said China imported 4.5 million tonnes of Australian barley worth A$1.2 billion on average.

Australia: Western Australia looking at its biggest ever barley planting this year
|
Western Australia is still looking at its biggest ever barley planting this year, according to the Grain Industry Association of WA's (GIWA) latest crop report.
According to the report, the crop area mix had changed little in the past month.
It said the trend to increasing barley has eventuated in most areas, except the north, the canola and lupins area was down, oats for hay were up in traditional hay areas and pasture/fallow area was up.
"The wheat area has continued to be substituted by barley and, due to the late start, country has been left out that was initially to be sown to wheat," the report said.
"Wheat area is likely to be historically low at less than 52 per cent of the total crop area in 2019 and this will be the largest area of barley planted for the State on record at 1.91 million hectares.
"The subtle shift to pasture from the late break, and the increasing profitability of sheep has seen the total predicted area of crop drop to below eight million hectares for the first time in many years."
