Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands’ Q1 earnings exceed analysts’ forecasts
Americans might be drinking less beer overall, but when they do, many of them reach for Modelo, the Market Insider reported on June 28.

Shares of Constellation Brands, the alchohol company behind Modelo, Corona, Svedka vodka, and Casa Noble tequila, were up as much as 8.4% in early trading on June 28 after the company reported fiscal 2020 first-quarter earnings that exceeded analyst forecasts.

Here's what analysts expected:

Earnings per share: $2.21 reported versus $2.05 (expected)

Revenue: $2.1 billion reported versus $2.07 billion (expected)

The company also upped its expectations for the rest of the year to the range between $8.65 and $8.95 per share — a 15-cent increase from previous forecasts.

The strong start to the 2020 fiscal year was driven by sales of Modelo and Corona. Beer sales grew 7% this quarter, led by Modelo, which is now the top market-share gainer for beer in the US. It posted sales growth of 17% this quarter. Mexican beer has become a staple in the company's portfolio after it sold off most of its wine and spirits brands to E&J Gallo Winery for about $1.7 billion in April.

Modelo's outperformance comes at a time when the alcohol industry is grappling with ...More info on site

Brewery news Ethiopia: Vasari Beverages completes $100 mln capital raise to expand Ethiopia brewery among other projects
Vasari Beverages has completed a US$100 mln capital raise to fund a set of growth opportunities including the expansion of its Ethiopia brewery and the pursuit of new acquisitions and greenfield developments across Africa and Asia, the Drinks International reported on June 26.

Vasari is a leading frontier and emerging markets alcoholic beverage investor and RMB, a leading pan-African investment bank, acted as sole mandated lead arranger and funder for the latest deal.

Led by Vivian Imerman, Vasari has more than 40 years’ experience operating market-leading consumer goods companies across emerging and developed markets including Scottish distiller Whyte & Mackay.

“Over the past six years we have been involved in the deployment of more than US$250 mln in capital investment to develop our frontier and emerging markets beverage strategy,” said Imerman.

“Vasari Beverages has a highly activist investment approach and seeks to build long term sustainable value. This capital injection is a step forward in pursuing our investment strategy across compelling opportunities in our target regions."

Vasari owns 98% of the controlling offshore company of Dashen Brewery, one of Ethiopia’s largest breweries, which will use some of the capital raised by Vasari to double total production capacity to 5 mln hectolitres.

Brewery news Germany & USA: German brewer Gilde planning massive US production facility
This time, German beer is coming directly to the U.S. beer market, rather than the other way around. According to an exclusive in Charlotte, NC’s The News & Observer on June 27, German brewery Gilde, based in Hannover, Germany, is planning a massive U.S. production facility in the city, which would have up to a 500,000 barrel capacity. That would apparently be almost 25 times the production ceiling of Charlotte’s biggest current brewery, the similarly German-themed Olde Mecklenburg.

Gilde is one of Germany’s oldest breweries, in operation since the 16th century, but it still doesn’t seem to be particularly well known throughout the country. Despite reportedly having a massive, 850,000 barrel brewery in Hannover, the beer somehow still doesn’t make it that far from its home city, indicating that the city must drink one hell of a lot of Gilde. Primary exports appear to be light lager styles, pilsners and additional styles such as hefeweizen. The official Gilde website highlights a few more, such as a bottled radler, a grapefruit beer, a helles and several pilsner substyles.

The brewery planned to eventually open in Charlotte would be truly huge—100,000 square feet in size, according to the News & Observer. However, before the ...More info on site

Brewery news Spain: Six provinces account for 80% of total beer consumption in Spain
Eighty per cent of the beer drunk in Spain is done so within six of the 17 autonomous communities, the Euro Weekly News reported on June 28.

Andalusia, Madrid, Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands are runaway national leaders in beer consumption, apparently due to the influx of thirsty tourists they receive each year.

From June to September of last year, 11 million hectolitres (a unit equal to 100 litres) of beer was consumed in Spain and according to sobering statistics used by brewers like Jacobo Olalla Marañon, one of every four beers is drunk by a foreigner.

Most people opt to drink out of the house in Spain, in bars and often with something to eat. This distinguishes the country’s drinking culture from other European countries as generally the statistics are skewed in the other direction. The presence of so many ‘taperias’ and bars around Spain apparently entices locals and foreigners alike to step out and enjoy a tipple.

Brewery news India: AB InBev, Heineken launching non-alcoholic beer to compete with soft drinks makers
Anheuser-Busch InBev and Heineken, the world’s biggest brewers, are launching non-alcoholic beer of their flagship brands in India that will compete with beverages of cola giants Coca-Cola and PepsiCo on supermarket shelves and restaurants, the Economic Times reported on June 28.

United Breweries (UB), controlled by Heineken, is launching Heineken 0.0, a zero-alcohol version of the beer brand, while AB InBev will roll out Budweiser 0.0 next week across the country.

“There is a movement towards consuming less of carbonated sugary drinks and a need for a non-alcoholic cold refreshment in a country like ours,” said Shekhar Ramamurthy, managing director at UB which launched its first non-alcoholic beer brand Kingfisher Radler last year in Gujarat, a state where making, selling and drinking alcohol is banned since 1960.

“Adults, aged above 16-17 years, perhaps have moved out of the carbonated soft drinks category and are seeking something less sugary for refreshment,” he said.

While beer contains 1.2% to 8% alcohol by volume (ABV), non-alcoholic beer mostly has 0.05% or less ABV.

Zero alcohol beers also tend to be more profitable in the country because beer is subject to high taxes that make up for more than half the retail price.

Brewery news Angola: Implementation of VAT forces Castel to increase beer prices
Groupe Castel will hike prices of its beers by 9% due to the implementation of VAT in Angola, CEO Philippe Frédéric was quoted as saying by Mercado on June 27.

The company is forced to increase prices as production costs will grow because of the new tax, he said.

Currently consumption tax on beer in the country is 30%, said the company, which produces such popular in Angola brands as Cuca, Nocal and Eka.

Brewery news UK: Isle of Skye Brewing announces acquisition of rival Black Wolf Brewery
Isle of Skye Brewing has announced the acquisition of craft brewery Black Wolf and its beer products from VC2 Brands, the Drinks Insight Network reported on June 28.

Reported to be in line with Isle of Skye Brewing’s expansion strategy, the move will enable the company to further expand its footprint in the European and US market.

Isle of Skye Brewing Company’s managing director Kenny Webster said: “The purchase of Black Wolf Brewery from our friends at VC2 Brands is a hugely positive move for both businesses.

“For Skye Brewing in particular, by having our own owned bottling facilities, we’ll be able to meet current growth demands and look at additional opportunities.

“Skye Brewing has gone from strength to strength since the first brew back in 1995. We look forward to bringing a taste of the island to more people as we increase production thanks to the new deal.”

The deal will enable the Skye-based firm to operate its own bottling facilities for the first time.

Isle of Skye’s beers such as Skye Gold and Skye Craft lager will continue to be produced at Uig, Scotland. Black Wolf will also continue bottling operations for other brands.

Black Wolf Brewery was originally known as Traditional Scottish Ales (TSA) ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Bira91 wants to be more Indian after 4 years of selling craft beer in the country
The British might have introduced European beer to India in the 18th century, but over the years, India has mastered the craft of the good ol’ beer. Today, Indian homegrown beer brands like Bira 91 have made their mark across the world. And that too, with an Indian twist, the Business Insider India reported on June 28.

Bira91, which in its name carries India’s country code - 91, introduced a new product called the Indian Pale Ale. “It’s a beer style that was imagined for India, that was shipped to India, that was created in India, and it’s redefined craft beer globally. So we have to connect back to that heritage,” said Ankur Jain founder, Bira91.

This new launch has Indian ingredients in it. “We’re adding the pomello, which is the mother of grapefruits everywhere and it’s Indian,” said Jain.

It is also lowering the Alcohol By Volume content to 4.5% from about 7%.

Four years since its launch, Bira91 is making Indians more accustomed to beer, but according to their own taste! It recently launched a beer for the Indian masses - Boom, which is available across 10 states in the country.

Bira91, which had its first brewery in ...More info on site
