Brewery news South Africa: Craft beer sector still finding its way
While the craft brew industry in the United States has been flourishing for decades, in South Africa, the market is still finding its way, The Hawk reported on July 9.

“South Africa is in the wild wild west phase of craft beer, but it is starting to develop a bit of a name, and people are starting to pick up,” said Troye May, who serves on the board of the Craft Beer Association South Africa.

Mitchell’s, a brewery located in Knysna in the Western Cape, was the first independent craft brewery in South Africa, popping up in the mid-1980, May said. In 2007, a few more breweries came on board, and then more after the FIFA World Cup, which was held in South Africa in 2010.

“It just escalated from there,” May said. “The big year in terms of number of breweries opening was in 2016. I think we had a 40% increase of number of breweries opened. It wasn’t as many as 3,000 that America had at this time, but our growth was double that of the States.”

May’s organization now represents over 200 craft brewers in South Africa.

“We represent a whole nation of beers,” May said. “We just don’t represent one ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: East African Breweries Limited announces price increases
Beer-lovers will from July 15 be forced to dig deeper into their pockets after East African Breweries Limited (EABL) increased the prices of a range of their alcoholic products, the Nairobi News reported on July 8.

The brewer placed an advertisement on the local dailies announcing the new prices, which on average show an increment of Sh10 for all popular beer brands.

As a result, the recommended retail price of a 500ml bottle of the company’s flagship beer brand Tusker Lager is now Sh160, up from Sh150, while a 500ml bottle of Guinness Stout will retail at Sh180, up from Sh170.

Several brands of spirits have also been affected by the price change. A 250ml bottle of Smirnoff Vodka will now retail at Sh420, up from Sh400, while a 250ml bottle of Gilbey’s Gin will retail at Sh410, up from Sh390.

However, the company announced that three brands of spirits – Chrome, Kenya Cane and Kane Extra – are unaffected by the price change.

The move comes just one month after the National Treasury Cabinet Secretary, Henry Rotich, announced an increase in excise duty on alcohol and cigarettes in his 2019/20 budget.

Mr Rotich explained that the sin tax hike is meant to plug deficits in ...More info on site

Brewery news The Philippines: Craft Beers Association responds to post on ‘unsafe’ brews
A group representing the Philippine craft beer producers has responded to a viral post that is urging the public to “stay away from all local craft beer and spirits”, ABS-CBN News reported on July 9.

The post has been copied and pasted on Facebook by many Filipinos, citing the recent report of methanol poisoning from a local gin called Cosmic Carabao.

“Stay away from ALL local craft beer and spirits. Jess Milner is currently confined in the hospital for having drank #CarabaoGin. She has currently gone blind in her left eye and there are more reported cases of death upon consumption of these products. Locally crafted spirits do not go through any FDA regulations. Pls be aware before ordering cocktails!” the post read, unedited.

In a Facebook advisory on July 9, the Craft Beer Association of the Philippines (CBAP) made it clear that methanol only occurs during the distillation process, which produces spirits.

This, the group stressed, is different from brewing or fermentation, the process involving the production of beer.

“We, the members of the Craft Beers Association of the Philippines (CBAP), would like to clarify this distinction in response to a sweeping post in the social media… without specifying how beer is involved ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken faces potential penalty over pubs code breach
Deputy pubs code adjudicator Fiona Dickie has stated Heineken UK could face a financial penalty of up to 1% of its annual UK turnover if Star Pubs & Bars is found to have breached the pubs code. As reported by The Morning Advertiser, Heineken’s pub arm Star Pubs & Bars will be the subject of the first investigation by the pubs code adjudicator (PCA), which believes the operator of around 2,700 pubs may have breached the pubs code.

“We suspect that [Star Pubs & Bars] has breached the pubs code by offering unreasonable stocking terms to tenants seeking to go free of tie,” Dickie told The Morning Advertiser.

“A stocking requirement is not a tie, it’s a new concept that was created by the pubs code and it does permit a brewing pub owning business to require a tenant going free of tie under MRO (the Market-Rent-Only option) to continue to stock products. But there are limits and the requirements must be reasonable. The tenant must be able to buy products on the open market, to secure the best price and they cannot be prohibited from stocking competitor brands.”

Dickie confirmed the PCA would be ...More info on site
