USA, VA: Aslin Beer Co. opens new facility in Herndon
|
Aslin Beer Co. has opened its new tasting room at 847 S. Pickett St. in Herndon's West End neighborhood, the Alexandria Living Magazine reported on July 17.
The space is 25,000 square feet, which includes 15,000 square feet of production, a large tasting room and private event space. The company also has a to-go distribution facility in Herndon.
Aslin Beer Co. started as a home-brewing operation before opening its doors as a small business in 2015 in Herndon.
One of the reasons Alexandria was a natural choice, Andrew Kelley, a co-founder of Aslin Beer, told Alexandria Living Magazine earlier this year, is because Port City has done such a good job of "paving the way" for other craft beer companies.
They also like the neighborhood feel of Alexandria, its number of small, family-owned businesses and its walkability, Kelly said.
In addition to Kelley, the other partners in the business are Kai Leszkowicz and Richard Thompson.
Alexandria hours for the new location in Alexandria's West End are Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. - 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. - 11 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.

USA, VA: Dogtown Brewing Co. coming to Manchester on July 27
|
The former Thalhimers department store at 1209 Hull St. in Manchester will soon be home to a multistory beer hall and full-service restaurant when Dogtown Brewing Co. hosts its grand opening on Saturday, July 27, the Richmond Magazine reported on July 17.
Brewmaster Ben Spencer, 45, grew up on the city’s North Side but fled west at 21. Living in Boulder, Colorado, he fell in love with home brewing thanks to one of his roommates. A couple years later, he became a keg washer at Oasis Brewing in Denver and slowly worked his way up the brewery ladder.
He returns to the city with an extensive portfolio, one that includes collaborations with meaderies and wineries and stints at Oskar Blues and Boulder Beer Company in Colorado, as well as Strike Brewing Co. in San Jose, California.
Spencer’s longest tenure thus far was in San Francisco at Magnolia Brewing Co., where he served as brewmaster for 11 years and won three medals at the Great American Beer Festival. He also dabbled in beer consulting and facilities management for Laughing Monk and Standard Deviant Brewing in San Francisco and Seaside Brewing in Oregon.

USA, NJ: Dr. Brewlittle’s Beer Co. to open in Maple Shade this September
|
This September, Dr. Brewlittle’s Beer Co., a craft brewery, will open in downtown Maple Shade, the Burlington County Times reported on July 20.
Renovations at 108 East Main St. already are underway, and soon a former hair salon could be transformed into a two-floor, modern-industrial-style brewery.
The business was proposed and brought to life by Chris Torre, a veterinarian and the owner of Mount Laurel Animal Hospital.

USA, WI: Back Country Brewing approved in Plover
|
There will soon be a new place to get drinks in Portage County. A request was approved for Back Country Brewing to remodel an existing part of a building to create a new brewery, wsaw.com reported on July 17.
Sarah Agena and Gabe Hopkins are bringing their dreams to life with Back Country Brewing Company. The brewery will be taking over part of the Duralum building in Plover. They got approval from the Village of Plover on July 15.
Hopkins has spent 16 years in brewing and learning from the likes of Sam Adams, Guinness and even working for another local brewery. Now he's taking those skills to his own place. "Our plan is to do 11 beers and then a craft soda of type. One of our beers will be a hard seltzer on tap which will be the first of its kind in Wisconsin," said Hopkins.
The name of the brewery comes from something the two love doing together. "We love the outdoors and he talked about bringing the love of the outdoors indoors and vice versa," explained Agena.

USA, RI: Lops Brewing getting ready for opening in Woonsocket
|
With less than a week to go until opening day, Lops Brewing owner Sean Lopolito is brewing as fast as he can, the Valley Breeze reported on July 17.
The new brewery at 122 North Main St. received its final state licensing at the end of June and is now slated to open on Saturday, July 27. Opening weekend hours will be Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m., with food trucks and four beers available on tap.
With a crowd of thirsty patrons expected for opening weekend, something is always brewing in the property’s new basement brew space, which features four 3.5-barrel fermenters capable of holding about 100 gallons each. The community, said Lopolito, has been enthusiastic about the project, and he’s hoping his newly set up system will be able to keep pace with demand in the opening weeks.
“Response has been great,” he said. “A lot of people have reached out about when I’m going to open and what beers are on tap.”

USA, FL: Hop Daddy, LLC proposes to build brewery in Clearwater
|
When the city of Clearwater put a request out for an entrepreneur to develop the property at 115 S Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., it got one response. The company Hop Daddy, LLC proposed building a brewery, to be called Salty Bull Brewing, on the dormant site, the Tampa Bay Times reported on July 19.
On July 15, the city’s community redevelopment agency took a major step toward approving their plans.
The city plans to sell the one-acre property to Hop Daddy for $600,000, and give the business a $500,000 grant to get started, CRA director Amanda Thompson said at a meeting of the City Council, which acts as Clearwater’s CRA board.
Salty Bull co-founders Bryan Boroksy, Teri Moran and Jeff Moran hope to combine a green space with an industrial area to create a unique brewery experience, Borosky said on July 15.
Thompson acknowledged that the project comes with some risk for the city. As a result, Clearwater plans to put some backstop measures into the agreement with its new partners. The $600,000 in payments to the city will come over 10 years, allowing Clearwater to still have a stake in the property over that time.

USA, CA: 559 Beer opens second location in Clovis
|
A Clovis brewer has opened a second location over the hills but not so far away, The Business Journal reported on July 19.
559 Beer has launched a second brewpub at Shaver Lake Point. Set amongst the trees, the new location at 44189 CA-16 features views of the lake and a log cabin interior, according to a news release.
Large parties and family gatherings can be hosted in the building, which dates back to 1939. To celebrate the opening, 559 Beer is launching a new 168 Hoppy Pilsner and Hazy IPA along with their eight other brews.
The location will be open Thursday through Saturday, opening at noon for lunch each of those days with live music on Friday and Saturday.
559 Beer officially began brewing in 2012 and opened their first microbrewery in Old Town Clovis in 2015, growing in to a full-service restaurant.

USA, NV: 7 Five Brewing gets approval to open in Las Vegas
|
Vegas Golden Knights' Ryan Reaves was at the Las Vegas City Council meeting on July 17 and was approved to open a brewery in Las Vegas, KTNV Las Vegas reported.
"I'm very excited to bring 7 Five Brewing to the city of Las Vegas and downtown, the new city I call home. I am very excited about this opportunity," said Reaves after the meeting.
The newly constructed brewery on Main Street in downtown Las Vegas will feature a brewhouse, 33 taps, a scratch kitchen, 600 square foot outdoor patio, and a small stage for live entertainment & special events.
The brewing facility will be completed later this summer and ready for production of 7Five and Able Baker beers shortly thereafter.
The new brewery will allow 7Five to roll out new beers included a Lager, IPA and a seasonal Imperial Stout in the coming months.
7Five products and marketing tell the story of Reaves’ journey through professional hockey and his life and represents the underdog and hardworking stories and culture that people of Las Vegas are proud of.

USA, WA: Aslan Brewing Company to open new location in Fremont
|
Aslan Brewing Company has announced it plans to open its new location in Fremont in September, My Ballard reported on July 19.
The Fremont location will be the third for the Bellingham-based brewery — their first outside of Bellingham. They’re building the new taproom in the new Cedar Speedster building on N 36th St.
An Aslan rep told Seattle Eater that they should be open by the end of September — they’re currently in the hiring stage.
The taproom will be on the smaller side, with seating for 30. Eater reports that they’ll also have food on-site, with sandwiches from Salumi and some items from Local Tide, a seafood restaurant.

USA, CA: Dunbar Brewing headed to Atascadero
|
Dunbar Brewing owner Chris Chambers is getting into a routine of moving operations a little further up El Camino Real every few years, the Paso Robles Press reported on July 19.
Specializing in Irish, English and Scottish ales the brewmaster gave fans in Santa Margarita notice about three months ago that the public house was headed north to Atascadero.
“It’s only eight miles. Really we’re closer to some of our regulars here,” he said, just before unloading a pick-up bed full of the bar’s stools and chairs.
An Army veteran with some practiced stoicism to spare, he said he was keeping a few secrets ahead of a planned unveiling of the new venue at 5855 El Camino Real in Atascadero on July 1, with the same hours as in Santa Margarita. That date was later pushed to mid-July, after the midweek holiday.

USA, NC: thport’s Check Six Brewing Company announces its closure
|
There will be one less brewery in southeastern North Carolina; Southport’s Check Six Brewing Company announced its closure earlier this week, the Port City Daily reported on July 20.
The World War I-themed brewery made the announcement on its Facebook page, saying the decision came after struggles with hurricanes and distribution challenges.
“Greetings all our faithful customers. It is with a heavy heart that we at Check 6 have to close our doors. Please understand that we did not make this decision lightly,” the post announced.
The brewery is veteran-owned and operated by the Hassel and Goldman families, according to the company’s website. Tim Hassel, Noah Goldman, and Norm Weiss began homebrewing in 2006. Mike Goldman joined to help open Check Six in April 2015.
“Check six” is a term fighter pilots use for checking their six o’clock position behind them, the most vulnerable spot for an enemy attack.

Japan & Australia: Asahi already getting headache from its Australian expansion
|
Asahi Group Holdings Ltd. is already getting a headache from its $11 billion Australian foray, Bloomberg reported on July 22.
Japan’s biggest brewer, seeking to escape a slow-growing, aging market at home, is buying the Australian assets of Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, which owns iconic but low-priced beers such as Victoria Bitter. To do so, Asahi will double its debt load and issue about 10% more in new shares. That’s becoming a hangover for investors, who lopped $2 billion from the brewer’s market value on July 22.
The deal is the latest in an overseas buying spree by Asahi, which picked up Fuller, Smith & Turner Plc’s brewing business for $330 million earlier this year and made an $11 billion push into Europe two years ago. The Japanese brewer, along with Kirin Holdings Co. and Sapporo Holdings Ltd., has seen domestic beer shipments decline for 14 straight years as fewer people reach legal drinking age. To stay ahead of rivals, Asahi now appears to be more willing to weigh down its balance sheet.
“The question is whether Asahi can effectively manage the business, while improving profits and cash flows,” said Toshiyasu Ohashi, chief credit analyst at Daiwa Securities Group Inc., who added that Asahi’s

Portugal: January-April beer sales show double-digit yoy growth
|
Beer sales in Portugal witnessed double-digit year-on-year growth in the period between January and April 2019, a new study has revealed.
The data, sourced from Nielsen, was shared by Nuno Pinto de Magalhães, director of communication and institutional relations at Portuguese brewery Sociedade Central de Cervejas (SCC), reports the Jornal Economico.
This positive trend has continued in May, with Pinto de Magalhães attributing the market growth to good weather, increased consumer confidence and improved purchasing power.
Figures published by the national brewers association, Cervejeiros de Portugal, show that the Portuguese consumed 527.6 million litres of beer in 2018, up 0.5% on the previous year.
Beer consumption in the HoReCa channel was 69%, while the take-home channel accounted for the remaining 31%.
However, beer production saw a 3.3% decline in Portugal in 2018 to 676.3 million litres.
Beer exports fell 14.6% year-on-year to 162.2 million litres, while imports declined 10.9% to 19.8 million litres.

Switzerland: Microbreweries battling for share of growing Swiss beer market

As beer consumption in Switzerland decreases, the country’s love of beer is driving an explosion of local craft beer brewers. Now home to more than 1,000 breweries, is there a risk of market saturation?
It is a little-known fact, but Switzerland holds an unusual world record; that of having the most breweries per capita.
At the end of last year, it was home to 1,021 active beer producers putting it ahead of countries like the Czech Republic, Germany, Belgium, Austria or Canada which have long-standing reputations for brewing the amber liquid, swissinfo.ch reported on July 23.
The industry’s growth over the last 20 years has boomed. In 2000, there were just 81 registered breweries in Switzerland. From 2011, there has been a tripling of beer producers.
“This development gives us great pleasure because it helps to incite the interest of the population,” comments Marcel Kreber, director of the Swiss Brewers Association.
“The more than 1,000 breweries – large or small, professional or amateur – are all representatives of this thousand-year-old craft.”
That said, Kreber cautions that the figures should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Australia: Asahi’s takeover of CUB could help revive beer sales in Australia
|
The A$16 billion takeover of Carlton & United Breweries by Japan's Asahi could help revive beer sales in Australia after a multi-year slump, industry executives say, as the competition regulator confirmed it would investigate the blockbuster deal, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.
Carlton & United Breweries (CUB), the maker of some of the country's biggest and best-known beers including Carlton Draught, Victoria Bitter, Great Northern and Pure Blonde, was sold by its former multinational parent company Anheuser Busch InBev in a landmark transaction announced on July 19.
In his first public comments since the deal was announced, CUB chief Peter Filipovic on July 21 said his company, which runs the Abbotsford brewery, Hobart's Cascade brewery and Yatala brewery near Brisbane, would benefit from the tie-up. "We look forward to growing the business and the beer category with Asahi," he said.
"Not only will we continue to brew our famous beers such as VB and Carlton Draught in Australia, but we'll join a company that has fantastic beers such as Asahi and Peroni."
The proposed tie-up of Asahi and CUB will trigger a review by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission scrutinising the amount of market share the combined company would control.

EU: MARS cuts barley, soft wheat yield forecast
|
The European Union’s crop monitoring service, MARS, on July 22 cut its forecast of the EU soft wheat yield this year to 6.04 tonnes per hectare (t/ha) from 6.10 t/ha last month.
That would still be 7.3% above last year’s level and 1.6% higher than the average of the past five years, MARS said in a monthly report.
For other cereals, it cut its forecast of EU 2019 all-barley yield to 4.91 t/a from 4.92 t/ha last month. The spring barley yield forecast was reduced to 4.10 t/ha from 4.14 t/ha.
MARS raised projected EU grain maize yield to 8.08 t/ha from 8.05 t/ha in June while the EU rapeseed yield was slightly lowered to 3.10 t/ha from 3.14 t/ha last month.
For sugar beet, MARS cuts its yield forecast for the EU 2019 crop to 73.9 t/ha from 75.7 t/ha last month.

The Competition Commission has recommended the Competition Tribunal approve a transaction whereby South African Breweries (SAB) intends to acquire the rights to a range of products from Diageo South Africa, the Engineering News reported on July 19.
The Diageo brands in question include Smirnoff’s ready-to-drink (RTD) products namely Storm, Guarana, Spin, Pine Twist and Berry Twist products, excluding the Smirnoff Vodka brand, as well as Guinness’ products, excluding its Foreign Extra Stout and Malta brands.
The rights comprise the licences to manufacture, market, distribute and sell the products.
Additionally, Diageo owns 11 000 coolers and fridges that will be acquired by SAB as a result of the transaction.
The commission found that the merger raised a material competition overlap in the market for the manufacture and supply of flavoured alcoholic beverages (FABs).
The FABs market is a highly concentrated market in South Africa, with Distell being the outright dominant player and the proposed merger will likely create further concentration in this market.
The merger substantially alters the structure of the FABs market as it is essentially a combination of the second- and third-largest players, SAB and Diageo, in the FABs market.

The Netherlands: AB InBev launches Bud in the Netherlands

AB InBev has launched its U.S. brand, Bud, on the Dutch market, The Brussels Times reported on July 22.
According to the giant Belgian beer consortium, Bud is the sector’s strongest brand on the world market. It stands out among those sold in the Netherlands, such as Jupiter, Leffe, Hertog Jan and Corona, the local branch of AB InBev argues, noting that it is mostly associated with after-work pints and festivals, so its target public is between 18 and 35 years old.
Market studies conducted by AB Inbev have found that the Dutch drinking public is happy at the arrival of a new actor on the beer scene, seeing it as a response to a real demand.
After its launch in hotels, bars, cafés and restaurants, the Bud, which will be competing with the national number-one beer, Heineken, will be available in shops and stores from autumn.
Known as Budweiser at home in the United States, where it appeared in the 19th century, the brand shortened its name to Bud in Europe due to a complaint filed by the Czech brewery Budweiser Budvar. It became a subsidiary of AB InBev in 2008.

Beer-loving South Koreans angered by a trade row with Tokyo are boycotting Japanese brews in a surge of patriotism that has even seen popular beauty bloggers targeted, the Japan Today reported on July 20.
Japan this month unveiled tough restrictions on exports crucial to tech titans like Samsung, fuelling fears about the impact on the global tech sector, while South Korea's central bank warned it could have "no small impact" on the economy.
Officials from both countries have held hours of terse talks to settle the worsening crisis but there has so far been no sign of a detente.
But beer drinkers in the South are making their fury known, shunning four big Japanese brands in favor of other brews, according to E-Mart, the country's largest hypermarket chain.
Sales of Asahi, Kirin, Sapporo and Suntory beer fell nearly 25 percent in the first two weeks of July compared with the second half of June, it said.
"This is a sudden drop we haven't seen for a long time," an E-Mart official told AFP, adding that sales of Korean beer brands were up around seven percent in the same period.
