Whisky news USA: Beam Suntory building craft whisky distillery in Kentucky
The company behind the world's top-selling bourbon, Jim Beam, is pouring tens of millions of dollars into a new Kentucky distillery to boost production of craft whiskeys, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported on July 25.

Beam Suntory executives broke ground Thursday for the production facility at their flagship bourbon distilling operation in Clermont. It's part of a $60 million investment that includes raising Beam's profile by upgrading the "visitors' experience" at Clermont as bourbon tourism grows.

The company is looking to build on the momentum for its super-premium craft brands, which have experienced double-digit yearly growth. The bulk of sales are in the U.S.

"We felt this was the time now to really elevate our commitment to premiumization, innovation and also education," Beam Suntory President and CEO Albert Baladi said by phone.

A recent storage warehouse fire in Kentucky that destroyed about 45,000 barrels of aging whiskey had minimal impact on the company's upward trajectory. Beam Suntory plans an "exhaustive review" of its warehouses to look for ways to reduce risks and minimize environmental damage if fires occur, Baladi said. Its warehouses have lightning protection and sprinkler systems. Lightning sparked the recent fire.

The new craft distillery will be named for Beam master distiller Fred ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Squirrel Fight Artisan Brewing already open in Moses Lake
Squirrel Fight Artisan Brewing opened last week in Moses Lake, Washington, the Washington Beer Blog reported on July 23.

The two people behind the new brewery are Troy Watson and Ruben Vela, co-owners and alternating brewers. According to the company’s website, the brewery’s name is a metaphor for how the brewery’s co-brewers develop their beer recipes.

“Our brewing model is that we take turns developing and brewing a beer recipe. As homebrewers, we use to compete with each other and had our friends in the local homebrew club judge which of us brought a better beer to that meeting. We have carried that friendly competition (the fight in Squirrel Fight) over to our brewery and we are letting our customers pick the “winner” of their visit.”

The taproom is family-friendly. Dogs will likely be allowed once the outdoor seating area is open.

Squirrel Fight Artisan Brewing creates its beers using a 3.5-barrel brewing system. “We’re using what we call a ‘Discovery Brewery’ model, where we’re doing a lot of different beers,” Watson said in an interview with ifiberon.com. “People can come in one week then come in two weeks later there’s gonna be different beers that they haven’t tried down here. We’ll always ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, MB: Lake of the Woods Brewing becomes Ontario’s first craft brewery to open Manitoba location
Lake of the Woods Brewing has announced that it will be soon be opening a brewery and tasting room in Winnipeg, making it the first Ontario craft brewery to open an off-shoot location in Manitoba, the Canadian Beer News reported on July 22.

The new Lake of the Woods facility will be located in Hargrave St. Market, a new food hall development in True North Square that will feature a number of restaurants, bars, and food retailers.

Planned to open in September in time for the start of the Winnipeg Jets season at nearby MTS Centre, the location will include a nano-brewery, tasting room, and retail store selling beer and branded merchandise.

Once launched, the Winnipeg brewery will be the third location for Lake of the Woods, following the original Kenora, Ontario brewpub that opened in 2013, and a cross-border expansion that opened last month in Warroad, Minnesota.

The company is also planning to start renovations on a new production facility in Kenora this fall, with an aim to have it in operation by early 2021.

Brewery news USA, IA: Auto-themed Uptown Garage Brewing Co. to open on August 3
An old Ford showroom and garage in Ankeny is getting a new lease on life as an auto-themed brewery, DesMoinesRegister.com reported on July 24.

Uptown Garage Brewing Co. will open Aug. 3 at 305 SW Walnut St., in the former home of Miller Auto Repair and Service.

The new operation will offer a rotating selection of Iowa craft beers on tap, along with canned beer, cocktails and wine. The indoor seating area includes a stage for live music and comedy events, and visitors will be able to find lawn games and bicycle parking outside.

Jeremy Boka, a consultant on the project with Iowa Brewers Guild president and 515 Brewing Co. owner Dave Ropte, said intentions during the renovation process were to preserve the structure's original feel and environment.

Workers bleached and scrubbed the walls in the former garage area, but instead of removing all of the stains, they opted to cover some with a clear coat to retain the auto garage's character.

Vintage car signs hang throughout the building and old phone numbers of garage contacts can be found written on the walls.

“We kept as many of the phone numbers and names and cards and stickers on the walls as we could," said Boka, who ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IA: Lua Brewing Company aiming at opening in Des Moines later this year
A new brewing company is coming to the Sherman Hill neighborhood later this year, DesMoinesRegister.com reported on July 24.

Lua Brewing Company will be located at 1525 High St. in Des Moines. Owned by husband-and-wife team Scott and Whitney Selix, Lua is slated to open in October or November, Scott Selix said in an email.

The brewery will make and serve craft beer on the premises. In the meantime, the couple has been collaborating on craft beer projects with other breweries in Des Moines and the Midwest region including Barn Town Brewing in West Des Moines, BlackStack Brewing in St. Paul, Minnesota, and 608 Brewing Company in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Whitney Selix is the former general manager of Red's Alehouse in North Liberty while Scott is the lead brewer for Big Grove Brewery & Taproom in Iowa City and is on the board of directors for the Iowa Brewer's Guild. Whitney Selix will act as the president of the brewery.

The couple has hired their good friend, Zack Dunbar, lead brewer at Forager Brewery in Rochester, Minnesota, to oversee beer production.

The brewery will feature a bar and communal tables inside and an outdoor patio with views of the downtown skyline.

Brewery news Australia & USA: Australia’s Little Creatures launching San Francisco brewery
The first American outpost of growing brewery Little Creatures opens in San Francisco today, July 26, showcasing beers made with prized hops from Australia and New Zealand, Eater San Francisco reported.

Located between the Giants at Oracle Park and the Warriors at Chase Arena, the 6,300-square-foot Mission Bay taproom will pour 36 beers and serve an all-day food menu of pizzas, salads, and sandwiches to go with them.

Elsewhere in Little Creatures’ corner of the new One Mission Bay development, a “brewlab” will offer tutorials and room for events, and a to-go cafe will serve grab-and-go food and canned beer for retail purchase. Those cans won’t just be the pale ale and pilsner for which Little Creatures is already known: Head brewer Dennis Stewart will brew several SF-specific beers on-premises. Those are fermenting away in tanks behind a wrap-around bar in the large, sun-drenched taproom.

Little Creatures, named for the microscopic yeast busily making its beer, is a bit of a misnomer for the now sizable business. The 2000-founded brewery was purchased in 2012 by major Sydney-based beverage company Lion, a subsidiary of Japanese brewing giant Kirin. Locally, that puts little Creatures in the company of Anchor Brewing, the historic Potrero Hill ...More info on site

The brewery has a 14-and-a-half barrel brewing system to make craft beer on the premises. It has a wood burning pizza oven behind the bar. There’s two indoor fireplaces, one in each dining room.

Owners said they are paying homage to the site's history. They saved a Riverside billboard, along with some other signs and old pictures that are now inside the brewpub.

Brewery news USA, IA: Husband and wife open Textile Brewing Company in Dyersville
A new brewery has opened in Dyersville, kmch.com reported on July 25.

Carol and Tom Olberding have opened Textile Brewing Company in a former historic sewing factory downtown.

And they have a huge love of breweries. Carol, who grew up in Europe, met her husband in Georgia and he brought her back to his hometown in Iowa.

And she did. One night, Dyersville resident Chelsea McElmeel overheard Carol talking about wanting to open a brewery and told her mom, Jacque Rahe, who serves as Dyersville’s Economic Development Director.

The new Dyersville brewery is named Textile Brewing Company – in honor of the old sewing factory that the building housed for 107 years. Local pub owner Mike English owned the building, which sat empty for just a brief time after the sewing factory closed in 2017. Carol says she fell in love with the building – and immediately knew that she wanted to incorporate the building’s history into her new business.

Even the old sewing machines and other historic pieces were turned into lamps that sit at the brewery’s tables. And it’s not just the décor that has local ties – their beer does too.

And along with their selection of beer, they have a couple of ...More info on site

Whisky news UK: Diageo concerned over impact of US-Europe trade dispute on Scotland’s whisky industry
A senior executive at spirits giant Diageo has expressed concern over the impact a trade dispute between the US and Europe could have on Scotland's whisky industry, BBC News reported on July 25.

This month, the US threatened to impose tariffs on a range of European Union imports, including Scotch whisky.

Diageo Europe president John Kennedy said his company would be "ready to handle whatever comes".

But he added he was concerned about the impact on Scotch whisky's supply chain.

Mr Kennedy's comments came as Diageo announced a 9% rise in operating profit, to £4bn, for the year to 30 June.

He told BBC Radio's Good Morning Scotland programme: "We are not immune from a trade war or the impact of tariffs in the short term, but we are used to dealing with volatility in global trade and we are resilient as we operate across over 180 countries at almost every price point with all of our brands, so we feel like we're fit and agile and will be ready to handle whatever comes.

"What I would say though is, we are concerned about the potential impact of tariffs on Scotch whisky and the industry in Scotland, not just for us.

"We are a big company, we ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: East African Breweries counting on surging demand for low-priced Senator Keg beer and scotch to counter impact of tax increases
Kenya’s East African Breweries is counting on surging demand for its low-priced Senator Keg beer and also scotch whiskey to counter the impact of tax increases, its chief executive was quoted as saying by Reuters on July 26.

The brewer, which is controlled by British drinks group Diageo, on July 25 reported a 52% jump in pretax profit for the year to June as volumes grew 11% and sales surged 12%.

The strong performance partly reflected much weaker comparatives for previous financial year, as well as a stable business environment and higher production capacity.

But a plan by Kenya’s government to increase excise duty on spirits by 15% in September, well above the inflation rate of 5%, could cloud the company’s outlook.

“(This) is why we have got some time to try and have the debate with our stakeholders in government as to the wisdom of such a significant increase,” Andrew Cowan, East African Breweries’ CEO, told Reuters after an investor briefing.

Sales of Senator Keg, a low-priced lager made from locally grown sorghum, rose by close to a third in the last financial year, which will help to offset the impact of higher taxes from September.

Senator Keg has been one of the fastest growing ...More info on site

Brewery news Slovenia: Craft brewer Pivovarna Pelicon aimes at cracking 1 million euro revenue mark this year
Six years after it was launched as one of the first craft breweries in Slovenia, Pivovarna Pelicon has grown into a fully-fledged company with six employees that is looking to crack the million euro revenue mark, the Total Slovenia News reported on July 23.

Posting net sales of EUR 584,000 for 2018, up over a quarter on the year before, the company expects annual revenue to rise by about 30% to roughly EUR 900,000 this year, co-founder Anita Lozar told the STA. Virtually the entire profit is reinvested.

Starting off with a single product, a pale ale, Pelicon currently offers nine types of beer and has the capacity to produce up to 250,000 litres of the hoppy beverage a year. It has also branched out from beer to produce a craft gin and a "hoppy tonic" with real quinine.

"Over these six years we've grown, seen where our shortcomings are and slowly started to tackle them. We've slowly improved our product portfolio and started bottling beer. We currently sell half the beer bottled and half on tap in pubs, which we had not been doing before," Lozar said,

About a year ago the brewery also started to work with retailers. According to Lozar, this ...More info on site
