USA: Craft beer output up 4% in H1 2019
|
Growth for small and independent craft brewers in the US remained steady for the first half of 2019, according to new midyear metrics released by the Brewers Association (BA) — the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American brewers.
Production volume for the craft segment increased 4 percent during the first half of 2019, the Association said on August 6.
“Growth continues to follow a similar pattern we have seen in the past few years, with steady rates in the low-to-mid single digits,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “The majority of growth continues to come from microbreweries, taprooms, and brewpubs, whereas the distribution landscape remains more challenging for regional craft brewers.”
As of June 30, there were 7,480 active craft breweries, up from 6,464 during a comparable timeframe last year. An estimated 2,500 to 3,000 breweries are in planning, based on active Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) licenses.
“Overall demand for beers from small and independent brewers continues to increase, but at levels that make it difficult for all breweries to grow simultaneously,” added Watson. “This is a sign of a maturing market that will likely continue in the coming years.”

UK & US: Beer remains most popular drink in on-trade despite general decline in consumption
|
Beer is still the most popular alcohol drink in the on-trade despite a general decline in consumption, the Morning Advertiser reported on August 1 citing a new research.
Ahead of International Beer Day on August 2 data experts CGA and its US-based consultancy Nielsen CGA found beer accounts for 48% of drinks sold in Britain and 44% sold in the US.
It discovered while cask sales have fallen by 9.8% in Britain during the past year and 9.3% in America, sales of imported beer, world beers, super premium lagers and craft beer continue to increase in both countries, led in part by the consumer demand for premium drinks.
CGA drinks expert Mark Jackson said: “Despite changing tastes and buying habits, beer is still the number one preferred beverage for the on-trade in Great Britain and the US.
“Premiumisation of the beer category has outpaced volume declines to realise an increase in dollar and pound sales value.
“We are seeing world lager in most growth in Britain and import and domestic super-premium leading the way in America.”
Over the past 24 months, craft beer value sales in Britain have increased by a fifth (21.7%), world lager sales are also up by 26.5%.
Similar increases have been reported in

USA: AB InBev acquires Ohio’s Platform Beer Co.
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev announced on August 7 the acquisition of fast-growing Ohio craft brewery Platform Beer Co.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
In a press release, AB InBev noted that Platform was “the fastest growing regional brewery in the United States in 2017.” According to data from the Brewers Association, the Cleveland craft brewery increased production from 6,500 barrels to 20,000 barrels that year.
Platform will join AB InBev’s “Brewers Collective” of acquired craft breweries. Brewers Collective members include 10 Barrel Brewing Co., Blue Point Brewing Company, Breckenridge Brewery, Devils Backbone Brewing Company, Elysian Brewing Company, Four Peaks Brewing Co., Golden Road Brewing, Goose Island Beer Company, Karbach Brewing Co., Veza Sur Brewing Co., Virtue Cider, and Wicked Weed Brewing.
“In speaking with the other craft brewery founders in Brewers Collective, we know partnering with Anheuser-Busch means we will have the resources and the autonomy to bring our vision for Platform Beer Co. to life,” Platform co-founder Paul Benner said in the release. “Being able to continue leading the day-to-day operations was an important factor in our decision and we have no doubt that this partnership will benefit our loyal staff and passionate customer base”.
Benner and Justin Carson founded Platform in 2014.

Canada: Feed barley prices soften before harvest
|
As harvest season kicks off for feed grains, new barley crop prices are at “market-clearing levels”, the Canadian Cattlemen reported on August 2.
Allen Pirness of Market Place Commodities in Lethbridge, Alta., said cattle farmers are “in pretty good shape for old crop grain,” and are “waiting for new crop to hit.”
“It’s taking its toll on prices a little bit, with the expectation of large availability for new crop,” he said.
Nelson Neumann, a grain trader with Agfinity, said “the wheels fell off the bus” for old crop barley recently, as most buyers are content to wait a few weeks until prices are a bit cheaper.
“If you have old crop barley, you should sell it now or be prepared to hold on to it well into next year,” said Neumann.
New crop barley bids are between C$225 and C$230 per tonne, with the expectation that prices will drop off slightly after harvest.
“We can clear a lot of grain at these levels,” said Pirness.
Export demand for Canadian feed barley has remained low, further contributing to lower prices heading into harvest.
Prices for feed wheat are comparable to that of barley, and corn bids are few and far between.
“Corn is a bit of a wild card,”

|
A new craft beer and games microbrewery is planned to open in the winter of 2019 or early 2020 in the Timberlake area, the Lynchburg News and Advance reported on August 2.
Peaksview Brew & Games will offer beer and entertainment in a family-friendly atmosphere in the old DAV building next to Timberlake Health & Wellness, formerly Timberlake Family Pharmacy, at 20276 Timberlake Road at the corner of Greenview Drive.
Vince Ettare, owner of the brewery and pharmacy next door, said the 4,500-square-foot brewery and game space will include a large outdoor area and a 4.25-gallon barrel brewhouse offering 12 taps.
Jeremy McClure, COO and head brewer at Peaksview Brew & Games, said he plans to offer a full spectrum of beers from old-world recipes to new-age styles.
“I don’t want there to be a set style I brew,” he said. “I want to do what the wind blows me toward and make sure I’m on the cutting edge and I want to start introducing Lynchburg to new styles that some people may have never tried.”
The brewery will also offer beer cocktails and adult slushies as well as craft soda and non-alcoholic seltzers.
Beer will cost between $5 and $10 and arcade games will cost

Canada, BC: New Tradition Brewing Company sets opening date on August 24
|
Comox’s newest craft brewery will open in under a month’s time, My Comox Valley News reported on July 30.
New Tradition Brewing Company’s opening date is Saturday, Aug. 24 at the Comox Mall.
Co-founder Tim Jolley said New Tradition is three years in the making.
He teamed up with brewer Pat Savard about three years ago and the two saw an opportunity in the burgeoning craft beer market.
They spent about a year looking for a location and found one at the mall.
“Comox had a bit of a gap at the time,” Jolley said. “We found a nice space right in the centre that we thought would be a nice space for us. One of the things that appealed was the view from where we are, and we get a bit of an ocean and mountain view. We’re just up the way from Marina Park.
The Savard family has been brewing beer for generations.
Four generations of Savards have been brewing or distilling since the prohibition era.
Recipes have been handed down from one generation to the next.
Jolly said Savard has wanted to brew beer for years.
“The dream is real for him and obviously his wife is stoked for him to be able to brew on

USA, VA: Old Ox Brewery opens its doors in Middleburg
|
Middleburg was abuzz on July 27 with crowds thronging to sidewalk sales, restaurants and boutiques. They were also headed to the grand opening of a brewery – Middleburg’s first.
Old Ox Brewery Middleburg on Madison Street has had a soft opening for several weeks but its ribbon cutting and ceremonial tapping of the first keg took place at noon July 27, followed with live music, yard games and a backlot barbecue, the Fauquier Times reported.
This is the second location for this family-owned and operated business. Its first location opened in Ashburn in June 2014.
Co-owner and president Chris Burns was busy greeting old and new customers. Many had traveled from the Ashburn area, and were familiar with Chris and Old Ox beer which can be found in many restaurants and on the shelves in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C.
“I need a case to take to Maine,” said Beth Erickson, “Can you help me?” Burns was more than happy to arrange the delivery. Erickson is president and CEO of Visit Loudoun in Leesburg. She shared that Old Ox was one of the drinks served at her daughter’s wedding. “Love it,” she said.
“From my father,” Burns grinned as he shared where

USA, NJ: Four City Brewing to become City of Orange’s first brewery in nearly 40 years
|
Once home to multiple successful breweries, Orange hasn’t housed one since Rheingold Beer shuttered in 1980.
Later this month, Four City Brewing will be the first in the city to serve its own suds in nearly 40 years, NJBIZ reported on August 2.
The 4,600-square-foot craft brewery will open as part of the 55 S. Essex Ave. development.
“The diversity of the town, the long history of brewing and our location right next to the NJ Transit Orange station were key factors in our decision to be here,” said Four City Brewing Co-founder Roger Apollon Jr. in a statement. “We look forward to being a meaningful part of this vibrant community.”
Longtime Orange residents Apollan, Jeff Gattens and Anthony Minervino co-own the brewery. They named it after the four Oranges—West Orange, East Orange, South Orange and Orange. The three neighbors conceived the idea over the last decade.
The 55 S. Essex Ave. development by L+M Development Partners includes 72 mixed-income rental apartments and nearly 10,000 square feet of ground floor retail and parking, a big change from its last life as an unoccupied warehouse and cold storage facility.
“I welcome Four City Brewing to our Orange Business family,” said City of Orange Township Mayor Dwayne Warren

USA, NC: Lower Left Brewing Co. to open its doors in Charlotte on August 6
|
Lower Left Brewing Co. has finally set an opening date — the new Lower South End brewery will open its doors on Aug. 6.
The brewery is holding a soft opening first and then a grand opening the weekend of Sept. 7 and 8.
Brewery co-owners Tim Curtis and Alex Shoenthal signed a lease on the roughly 2,100-square-foot building at 4528 Nations Crossing Road in the fall of 2018, according to an Observer story.
The brewery is around the corner from GoodRoad CiderWorks, Olde Mecklenburg Brewery and Sugar Creek Brewing Company.
Lower Left will have five house beers on tap at the soft opening, including three of the brewery’s year-round beers: Participation Award, an American blonde ale; Juicy McJuice Face, a New England IPA; and Laser Shark, a West Coast IPA. The two other beers are Bravetart, a strawberry shortcake kettle sour, and Walter, a traditional Belgian white ale, head brewer Shoenthal said.
Shoenthal said the brewery won’t have in-house food, but plans to book food trucks and sell pre-bagged snack food and beer snacks.
Shoenthal and Curtis said they expect Lower Left will start hosting weekly events, like trivia nights and running clubs, once the business gets its footing in the area.
Shoenthal said he hopes

USA, MA: Great Marsh Brewing Company nears projected October opening
|
Beer will be brewing in Essex soon as the Great Marsh Brewing Company nears its projected October opening, the Gloucester Daily Times reported on July 30.
The $10 million facility at 99 Main St. is well underway, although no specific opening date is scheduled yet. Its current red-and-gray exterior with navy blue trimmings is a big change from the skeletal frame that stood just a few months ago. Right now, the focus is on the facility's insides.
A majority of the brewing equipment, much of which is made by German manufacturer BrauKon, has been installed, in the building's largest room facing Main Street. Passers-by can peak into the brewery's main control center through the building's large, front-facing window display.
Great Marsh Brewing owner John Collins, of Hamilton, said a German crew from BrauKon will fly into Essex for a month to test the set-up in mid-August.
"There's a lot of piping, valves and equipment to check," he continued. "Right now, we have three-quarters of a kilometer of piping."
Collins said the system check could take the German crew upwards of two weeks. Afterward, he and his staff will be able to test it out and brew some of their first batches. The brewery is expected

USA, PA: Lititz to welcome another craft brewery
|
More craft beer is coming to Lititz, the Lititz Record Express reported on July 31.
The Lititz Shirt Factory, an up and coming multi-use entertainment venue currently under construction at 5 Juniper Lane, has signed a multi-year lease with Collusion Tap Works of York.
Phase one of the project, which involved the transformation of the existing structure, began last October and included renovations to the exterior of the 100-year-old building. As the name suggests, in addition to a shirt factory, across the past century the building has also served as a consignment shop, antiques store, and furniture outlet.
“From the day I tasted Collusion’s beers more than a year ago, I knew this was the brewer I wanted at the LSF (Lititz Shirt Factory),” said Lititz native and building owner and Jim Hoffer.
“We always knew that we wanted to have a taproom presence in Lancaster County, and my wife and I have long been fans of the Lititz scene,” said Chuck Barnes, managing member of Collusion Tap Works. “When Jim invited us to meet him at the shirt factory building, I knew we had found our next home.”
Chuck’s son Jared Barnes will serve as head brewer for the Lititz location. He attended The

USA, CA: Wildcard Brewing Co. seeking new ownership
|
Faced with an ever-evolving craft brewery landscape and the “financial hurdles” of trying to keep up, Wildcard Brewing Co. in Redding is seeking new ownership, the Redding Record Searchlight reported on August 1.
In the interim, Wildcard has closed its brewery on Crossroads Drive and its two tasting rooms in Redding. Wildcard's tasting room in Albany in the San Francisco Bay area closed in May.
“Unfortunately, the ground has shifted beneath our feet. Breweries are opening at incredible rates, leaving our regional distribution plans with some major pitfalls,” Wildcard co-owner Jenny Hansen said in a news release. “As we looked at our model and we looked at what is happening in our industry, we took a step back and angled ourselves to focus on direct to consumer sales through our tasting rooms. Unfortunately, the financial hurdles of that expansion became too much.”
Jenny, and her husband, Jeff Hansen, opened Wildcard in 2012. The couple put the business up for sale earlier this year and “continue to pursue a possible partnership that will allow Wildcard operations to resume.”
Joshua Johnson, of Venture Properties in Redding, said a deal to purchase the business is in escrow and there is a chance the sale will close by

USA, VA: Champion Brewing closing its downtown Richmond location
|
Champion Brewing at 401 E. Grace St. in downtown Richmond is closing at the end of August, Richmond.com reported on August 2.
“We are not renewing our lease, which expires in December, and the landlord has asked to list the property early, so our last day will be Aug. 31,” said Champion’s president and head brewer, Hunter Smith.
The Charlottesville-based brewery opened its Richmond outpost in 2017, five years after its flagship spot.
“The Richmond market has been very supportive of our beers, particularly our experimental brews, since day one,” Smith wrote in the news release at the time.
The Richmond location was announced as a brewpub that was going to serve beer from the Charlottesville operation and ones brewed on-site in the new space.
The pub portion was announced as Sur Taco and Sandwich, a restaurant from Jason Alley and Michele Jones, who at the time (and until June) owned Pasture restaurant on the same block. The restaurant never opened, and Pasture closed in June.
Champion launched its own on-site food menu and added wine to its offerings in 2018.
In June, Grit Coffee — a Charlottesville-based coffee shop — opened a location inside Champion Brewing, and it’s hoping to stay.

USA, PA: Salmon Pants Brewery closes after less than a year of business
|
A craft brewery in Allentown has closed after less than a year of business, the Allentown Morning Call reported on August 1.
Salmon Pants Brewery, offering unique beers made with Colombian coffee beans, cotton candy, lychee and more, closed last month at 100 E. Susquehanna St.
“We are very pleased to say that our brand ‘Salmon Pants’ has been bought out by another company!” a July 1 post on the business’ Facebook page reads. “We would like to thank the people that have supported our vision from the start. We have learned a lot on our journey. We will be investing in a few cool projects this year supporting the vision of a few local entrepreneurs.”
According to the post, Salmon Pants was set to close by the end of July, following a private event to finish off the beer.
The brewery, which opened in November, was run by friends John Patello, a former U.S. Army officer with an MBA from Lehigh University, and Jonathan Rotger, an experienced programmer and scientist with degrees in chemistry, biology, genetics and computer programming.
“We sold the name and there is a group of guys that want to start a brewery so we will help them get started but

Australia: Beer prices could go up after tax hike as from August 5
|
The cost of beer could be on the rise with the taxman set to hike up tariffs on the amber ale in Australia, 9News reported on August 3.
From August 5 the Australian Taxation Office will increase the tax on beer by 21 cents per litre on draft beer and 30 cents a litre on stubbies cans and long necks.
According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald the ATO increase on the liquor follows a twice-yearly increase in indexation.
The reported quoted a study from the University of Adelaide which found the biggest cost of a typical carton of full-strength beer, including GST, is a tax equating to 42 per cent.
The study, authored by Professor Kym Anderson, revealed Australians pay around 18 times more beer tax than Germany, 37.5 per cent more than Britons and eight times more than Americans.
Australia ranks fourth in the world on beer tax behind Norway, Japan and Finland.
The Brewers Association is pushing for the federal government to ease the pain on beer lovers.
Association boss Brett Heffernan said a proposed increase to the excise-free threshold on both draught and packaged beer was an "affordable option".
"Correcting our runaway and regressive beer tax regime is relatively quick, easy, cheap

India: New Delhi authorities reject AB InBev plea to temporarily lift ban - source
|
Authorities in New Delhi have rejected a plea by Anheuser-Busch InBev to temporarily lift a 3-year ban while it hears the global brewer’s appeal, a senior government source told Reuters.
AB InBev, the world’s largest brewer, has been barred from selling its products in the critical New Delhi market for allegedly evading local taxes, Reuters reported last week. The company has denied the allegations.
A three-year investigation by authorities in India’s capital found that SABMiller - acquired by AB InBev in 2016 for around $100 billion - used duplicate barcodes on beer bottles supplied to retailers that year, allowing it to pay lower levies.
AB InBev has appealed against the ban to the Commissioner of Excise in the Delhi city government, two government sources with direct knowledge said. The ban order was passed by a deputy commissioner of the division.
While the company’s appeal is still under consideration, AB InBev also filed a separate plea with the Commissioner for putting the ban order on hold pending appeal, but that request was turned down, one of the government sources said on August 6.
“The (ban) order was detailed, there was no ground to give an interim stay,” said the official, who declined to be named as
