Spain: Spanish brewers fear huge impact from Brexit
|
The profile of Spanish beer is growing internationally but a new set of factors is threatening to undermine its success. Although beer consumption has bounced back last year after losing ground during the economic crisis – 20% between 2007 and 2012 – the economic slowdown coupled with external factors such as the possibility of a no-deal Brexit have started to ring alarm bells, El Pais reported on August 14.
“It’s a little early to say, but we have felt the effects of the economic slowdown and then there is concrete data, such as the drop in British tourism,” said Jacobo Olalla, managing director of Spain’s beer producer association Cerveceros de España, during the presentation of a report on Spanish vacation habits, produced by the association.
According to Olalla, Brexit is going to have a huge impact on the Spanish beer market, both in terms of tourism and exports. The United Kingdom is the third biggest export market for Spanish beer – 467,132 hectolitres in 2018 from a total of 2.97 million – and the main source of foreign tourists in Spain. “It’s a country with a big beer culture which doubles or triples our consumption and also helps us to export,” Olalla

Kenya: East African Breweries reaping rewards of investments in key assets
|
East African Breweries Limited (EABL) is reaping the rewards of its decision to invest in key assets, its managing director and CEO was quoted as saying by the African Business Magazine on August 15.
For almost 100 years, drinking a beer in the East African region has routinely meant picking up a cold Tusker lager – the flagship product of Nairobi-based East African Breweries Limited (EABL).
The beer was named in honour of George Hurst, the co-founder of EABL’s predecessor company, Kenya Breweries Ltd (KBL), who was killed by an elephant soon after the establishment of the firm in 1922.
In 1935, KBL acquired Tanganyika Breweries and the companies merged to become EABL the following year. At the turn of this century, Diageo, the world’s largest beverage company, acquired a majority stake in the firm.
Since then it has introduced a suite of local products to the market as well as leveraging UK-based Diageo’s global brands such as Johnnie Walker and Guinness.
As the second biggest company in the market after telecommunications firm Safaricom, EABL contributes approximately 1% of Kenya’s GDP and its products have retained a reputation as some of Kenya’s favourite brands.

Kenya: Heineken loses appeal against Sh1.7 billion payout
|
The High Court has declined to stop execution of a judgement requiring Heineken East Africa Company to pay Maxam Limited Sh1.7 billion in a distribution row, The Star reported on August 14.
Heineken had moved to court seeking stay of execution orders pending their appeal.
Lawyers representing Heineken on Tuesday argued the company has no assets.
"We have filed a notice of appeal and we shall be prosecuting it expeditiously. We ask the court to come at the earliest day to have the matter heard. During that period, we pray that a stay be granted and we are ready to provide security," they said.
However, lawyer Philip Nyachoti representing local distributor Maxam said Heineken has deliberately declined to obey the orders issued by Justice James Makau last month.
“This is impunity by the company. They deliberately decided not to obey the orders issued on July 29. Defendants should comply with the orders before the stay is issued,” Nyachoti argued.
Justice Wilfrida Okwani, however, declined to grant the beer makers any orders and directed that they serve their application to the respondents.
The matter will be heard on September 17.
Last month, Justice Makau awarded Maxam Sh1,799,978,868 as special damages for loss of business after its

Nepal: Warsteiner ready for brewing competition in Nepali beer market
|
In little as a year since production of Warsteiner — a premium German beer — started in Nepal, the brand has appeased the palate of local consumers. However, the brand officials are well aware of the brewing competition, as the beer culture grows in the country, the Himalayan Times reported on August 15.
“The beer market in Nepal is growing constantly, which will encourage a number of new brands to foray into Nepal,” said Thomas Nosner, technical director of Warsteiner International, who is currently visiting Nepal. “Hence, it is crucial that we make our product ready for the new market circumstances as the Nepali market is sure to face huge competition in the near future.”
Around a year ago, Raj Brewery, a subsidiary of Jawalakhel Group of Industries (JGI), started the production of Warsteiner in the country.
Warsteiner International is ‘satisfied with the progress’ of the German beer brand in the Nepali market.
“We have observed that the number of Warsteiner beer drinkers is continuously increasing in Nepal and we are satisfied with this steady growth of the brand in the country,” said Nosner.
Offering a completely different taste to Nepali consumers, Nosner opined that Warsteiner beer will continue to grow in the local market
