Japan & Australia: Asahi acquires Queensland craft brewer Green Beacon Brewing
|
Japanese brewing giant Asahi is active at both the small and big end of Australia's A$14 billion beer market, swooping on Queensland craft brewer Green Beacon Brewing, The Australian Financial Review reported on August 21.
The acquisition of the Brisbane group comes just a month after Asahi made a A$16 billion buyout offer for Australia's biggest beer company, Carlton & United Breweries.
CUB owns Victoria Bitter and Carlton Draught, and had also been stepping up its own presence in craft beers well before the Asahi buyout offer, acquiring Sydney's 4Pines and the Adelaide-based Pirate Life.
It is understood that CUB had itself made overtures to Green Beacon months earlier prior to itself being bought out by Asahi, and had been trying to convince the owners to sell. They will now be under the same umbrella.
Asahi executive chairman Peter Margin said Green Beacon was ''a great brand and a great business''. A sale price wasn't disclosed.
Green Beacon was established in early 2013 in the Brisbane suburb of Teneriffe. It was founded by friends Marc Chrismas and Adrian Slaughter, who were later joined by brewer Johann van der Walt.
Green Beacon invested A$3 million in a brewery in the northern industrial suburb of Geebung in Brisbane

The Philippines: San Miguel Corp. to issue P10 bln worth of fixed rate bonds this year
|
Diversified conglomerate San Miguel Corp. plans to issue P10 billion worth of fixed rate bonds before the end of the year, the Manila Standard reported on August 16.
San Miguel said in a disclosure to the stock exchange the P10 billion fixed-rate bonds represented the final tranche of the P60-billion bond shelf registration earlier approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
San Miguel said it would file with the SEC an offer supplement on or before Aug. 22 regarding the planned bond offering.
The conglomerate will also conduct an investors’ briefing for qualified institutional buyers on Aug. 22 to discuss the terms of the bonds.
The company did not say how it would use the proceeds from the bond offering. It used the proceeds of previous bond offerings to finance debt obligations.
San Miguel last issued retail bonds in 2017. It offered P5 billion five-year bonds at a fixed interest rate of 5.1923 percent a year.
San Miguel early this week obtained the go-signal to pursue the P734-billion Bulacan International Airport project.
Under the plan, San Miguel Holdings Corp. will take care of the financing, design, construction, supply, completion, testing, commissioning and operation and maintenance of the new international gateway.
The Bulacan International Airport is expected to begin

Canada: Barley exports expected to reach 3.13 mln tonnes in 2018-19
|
For 2018-19, Canadian barley exports are expected to increase from 2017-18 and reach an all-time high since 2008 – 3.13 mln tonnes, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reported on August 21.
China is the main destination for Canadian barley grain exports, although it has reduced barley imports from Canada in 2018-19. However, the decline in exports to China is expected to be more than offset by higher exports to other countries as Canada diversified its destination countries. Malt exports are expected to show a slight decline but remain stable, the experts said.
Total domestic use is expected to decrease to 5.684 mln tonnes, primarily due to reduced feed use.
Canada’s barley carry-out stocks are expected to fall to the lowest level ever of 0.85 mln tonnes.
The average feed barley price in Lethbridge feedlots is finalized at C$260/t, an increase of 15% from 2017-18. The average Prairie malt barley prices are 19-23% higher than in 2017-18.
For 2019-20, the area seeded to barley in Canada increased by 14% from 2018-19 to almost 3.0 million hectares, according to Statistics Canada. The provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan accounted for most of the increase.
Using average yields and average abandonment rate for harvested area,

India: Diageo increases stake in India’s United Spirits
|
Spirits giant Diageo has announced that it has increased its shareholding in India's United Spirits Limited (USL) to 55.2%, ESM reported on August 21.
The company has acquired more than 3.3 million shares, to raise its controlling shareholding position by approximately 0.46%.
Diageo made the purchase on the Bombay Stock Exchange for INR 591.95 (€7.47) per share.
The move places the company in a favourable position to capitalise on opportunities within India, which is considered to be one of the world's most exciting growth markets for alcoholic beverages.
For the financial year 2019, USL posted organic net sales growth of 8%, driven by a 12% increase in the 'Prestige and Above' segment, and double-digit growth in the Scotch category.
