Barley news Canada: Barley exports expected to reach 3.13 mln tonnes in 2018-19
For 2018-19, Canadian barley exports are expected to increase from 2017-18 and reach an all-time high since 2008 – 3.13 mln tonnes, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reported on August 21.

China is the main destination for Canadian barley grain exports, although it has reduced barley imports from Canada in 2018-19. However, the decline in exports to China is expected to be more than offset by higher exports to other countries as Canada diversified its destination countries. Malt exports are expected to show a slight decline but remain stable, the experts said.

Total domestic use is expected to decrease to 5.684 mln tonnes, primarily due to reduced feed use.

Canada’s barley carry-out stocks are expected to fall to the lowest level ever of 0.85 mln tonnes.

The average feed barley price in Lethbridge feedlots is finalized at C$260/t, an increase of 15% from 2017-18. The average Prairie malt barley prices are 19-23% higher than in 2017-18.

For 2019-20, the area seeded to barley in Canada increased by 14% from 2018-19 to almost 3.0 million hectares, according to Statistics Canada. The provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan accounted for most of the increase.

Using average yields and average abandonment rate for harvested area, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Sixpoint Brewery building state-of-the-art brewery in Gowanus
Sixpoint Brewery, a pioneer in the New York craft beer scene, is building a new state-of-the-art brewery and taproom in Gowanus, Brooklyn, set to open in May 2020, Brewbound reported on August 15.

The 20,000 ft2 space will feature a production brewing system, a full-service kitchen and bar, a street level outdoor beer garden, and a 4,000 ft2rooftop beer garden with stunning views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan skylines.

“This has been a long time coming, and we’re making sure we do it right,” says Eric Bachli, Sixpoint’s Brewmaster. Bachli, who joined from cult craft brand Trillium in 2017, couldn’t be more excited about the new space. “We’re working with Braukon, one of the most highly regarded manufacturers of brewing equipment in the world, on the buildout of their first brewery installation in New York City. It truly is a world class facility equipped with everything a brewer could dream of. The basics of the system are all there, but we added components to this buildout that allow us to push the boundaries ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Dented Keg Brewing Company to debut in Adamns Township this month
Matt McCullough used to spend a lot of time in his basement filling dented kegs with homemade beer. This month, he’ll debut his new 4,000-square-foot, 40-barrel brewery in Adams Township — the Dented Keg Brewing Company, NEXTpittsburgh reported on August 15.

Located in a former McGinnis Sisters Special Food Store in the Adams Shoppes on Route 228, Dented Keg, is set to open Aug. 30.

McCullough and co-owner Corey Gibbons of Penn Hills will serve a rotating lineup of 10 to 12 beers, plus house cider, regional wines and signature cocktails made with local spirits. McCullough’s brother, Derek, is the brewmaster.

Drafts are available in 12- and 16-ounce pours or flights of six eight-ounce samples, as well as in to-go cans. The flagship beverage, 504 Pale Ale (which serendipitously boasts a 5.04 percent ABV) is named after 504 Daisy Ct., the Cranberry Township residence where Matt McCullough and his original homebrewing partner once lived.

The 85-seat facility features a rustic industrial look (complete with dented kegs!), a private event space and a small menu including appetizers, sandwiches and kid-friendly eats. Flour and Sugar Cakery in neighboring Seven Fields will provide many of the desserts.

“We’re keeping our menu small so we can focus on execution ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Fixed Gear Brewing Co. opens second location in Guelph
Mike Oosterveld had a five year plan when he opened Fixed Gear Brewing Co. on Alma Street in Guelph, Ontario last October, guelphtoday.com reported on August 17.

Establish the beer, work out the kinks, then grow big enough to expand its offering into restaurants and the LCBO shelves.

Turns out he's about four years ahead of the plan.

Fixed Gear opened its second location on Friday, August 16, taking over the Elmira Road facility that previously held StoneHammer Brewing.

StoneHammer went out of business a little over a year ago.

"What it means for us, to become a real Ontario craft brewer and a player in the market that's growing, it will allow us to get into the LCBO and the beer store plus draft beer in local licenced establishments," Oosterveld said.

"It's always the plan to start small, build up a loyal following, then look to the future and find a larger place. But that was a five-year plan, not a 10 month plan. It happened quickly," he said.

He credits their loyal customers and the other craft brewers in town with helping the brewery grow quickly.

"You have to make good, quality beer too."

Fixed Gear has revived one of the StoneHammer beers, StoneHammer dark, and may ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Noble Savage Brewing Company officially open in Glen Cove
Bottoms up Glen Cove — Noble Savage Brewing Company is officially open for business, Patch.com reported on August 19.

The craft beer brewery at 27 Glen St. opened its doors on August 16 with live music, sweet treats and wood fired pizza, courtesy of a local food truck.

Owner and brewmaster Frank Bilello previously told Patch the business would act as a bar for the first two or three weeks and serve guest taps. Bilello, of Sea Cliff, would brew and sell his own product soon after, he said.

The brewmaster planned on brewing traditional styles, such as IPAs, pilsners, brown ales and red ales, but didn't expect to serve food. However, he intends to create a food truck program where he has multiple food trucks come down to the space behind the brewery each weekend.

A home-brewer for years, Bilello said he'd dreamed of opening his own brewery since 2013. He gained valuable experience working at Oyster Bay Brewing Company from 2015 to 2016, starting as an intern before being promoted to full-time and working on the brew-deck every day.

The Noble Savage brewery's interior is "very rustic," he said. The building once housed a real estate office and a dental office.

Brewery news USA, FL: Dissent Craft Brewing Co. eyeing downtown Lakeland for satellite operation
A St. Petersburg craft brewery is eyeing downtown Lakeland for a satellite operation, The Ledger reported on August 16.

Dissent Craft Brewing Co. has submitted plans to develop a small brewing operation and taproom at 125 S. Kentucky Ave., a space formerly occupied by La Carreta Mexican restaurant.

In technical terms, the business would operate as a nano-brewery, which is smaller than a microbrewery, said Kevin Stringer, 47, who has partnered with Dissent’s founder, Chris Price.

Plans call for installation of a three-barrel system that would produce approximately 24 barrels of beer each month, or about 288 barrels a year.

A microbrewery by definition has annual production under 15,000 barrels, according to the Brewers Association.

“We’re not looking to put a big brewery system in Lakeland,” Stringer said.

The modest size of Dissent’s main location in the community of Lealman hasn’t hurt its bottom line. Price, the brewmaster and co-owner, has earned praise for creative batches of beer. Earlier this month the brewery, located in an industrial business complex, treated customers to a hazelnut praline stout and a cold-brew coffee Kolsch.

Past productions include an Indian pale ale (IPA) flavored with mango and habanero peppers, a pale wheat ale with ginger, a double IPA made with guava ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Source Farmhouse Brewery opens its doors in Colts Neck
Along Route 34 in Colts Neck, beers with names like Hoppy Farmhouse Ale and Colts Necktar are on tap at the latest brewery to open in New Jersey, inside of a renovated 19th-century barn reflecting the history of a community and its future, The Two River Times reported on August 17.

“We’re grateful and we’re excited,” said Source Farmhouse Brewery owner Philip Petracca at a ribbon cutting ceremony Aug. 2, with his family, politicians and others attending. But instead of using ribbon, Petracca’s wife, Keri, cut a hop vine that had grown in Colts Neck.

“To the Source,” she said to cheers.

Philip Petracca is an entrepreneur who had been a co-owner of Fizzics, a product that improves the taste of beer. He also had appeared in 2016 on the ABC show “Shark Tank.” But he left Fizzics to start a microbrewery, a place that would be different from others in New Jersey in offering a “farm to glass” and a “truly authentic farmhouse experience,” in his words.

“The Source embodies beer first, community, authenticity and delivering a great beer-drinking experience,” Petracca said. “That’s the focus, each and every day, in everything we do.”

Locally grown produce goes into the beverages. Source, he said, aims ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: WeldWerks Brewing Co. to begin renovations for its second location
After months of meticulous planning and careful deliberation, WeldWerks Brewing Co. will begin renovations for their second location west of Downtown Colorado Springs in Old Colorado City. The WeldWerks team will break ground on the former site of The Dive diner (3043 W. Pikes Peak Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80904) in early September with a tentative grand opening date slated for October, Brewbound reported on August 16.

“Anyone who has seen The Dive understands that it will be a full rehab but we will be basically keeping the same structure with new skin,” says Colin Jones, co-founder and CEO at WeldWerks. “We came up with some pretty out-there designs but ultimately, we elected to retain as much of the original structure as possible.”

With the help of [au]workshop architects + urbanists, the WeldWerks team will flex their creative muscles to create a space that showcases their commitment to innovation and hospitality. The soon-to-be-named 1,300 square feet facility will include an outdoor beer garden and a second-story treehouse-inspired patio with incredible views. Much of the historic building, which was built in the 1900s, will retain the cozy and funky character of Old Colorado City with a WeldWerks flair.

“Colorado Springs is an outdoorsy town ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NV: Mojave Brewing Co. is well on its way to opening its doors in Henderson
Henderson already has its own Beer District, plus a boozy stretch of craft beer purveyors downtown and now Mojave Brewing Co. is well on its way to helping create a major new destination on the corner of Water Street and Pacific Avenue, the Eater Vegas reported on August 16.

Moving into a section of the vacant Bank of America building at 107 S. Water St., the brewers will join the Anderson Dairy Creamery scheduled to debut an old-fashioned ice cream shop next door in early 2020 and the planned site of Brisket & Bourbon, promised to feature live entertainment alongside a barbecue menu.

Describing itself as “small but mighty!” Mojave Brewing Co. is the brainchild of John Griffith and is confidently predicting a November debut, with much of the over-sized equipment for its 10-barrel facility already installed.

On the future menu, small batch ales, lagers, and cider, a less common micro-brewery specialty. Gluten-reduced beers and gluten-free ciders are in the works and a staff sommelier will be curating wines from fellow independent producers.

Brewery news USA, CO: Unnamed Beer Co. to open its doors in Boulder on August 22
A new brewery coming to Boulder wants to pay homage to the “unnamed artists” of the world, BusinessDen reported on August 16.

Unnamed Beer Co. will begin pouring at 2907 55th St. in Boulder on Aug. 22, according to co-owner Erik Jensen.

“It’ll be a place for artists and creative people,” Jensen said. “There are a lot of great breweries in the area, but we wanted to be different and provide a forum for people to share and enjoy each other’s company.”

The brewery has built its theme around street art, Jensen said. The ownership team, led by Boulder couple Jessie and Chris Pierick, is bringing in local artists to add paint murals, and plans to add local art exhibits and live shows to its business model down the line.

“We’re really doubling down on the creative aspect within the space,” Jensen said. “Most of the people out there making the world work aren’t people whose names are necessarily known. We wanted to give these ‘unnamed’ creatives and artists a place to gather and spend time with each other.”

The brewery took over the 980-square-foot space at the corner of 55th Street and Pearl Parkway in Boulder about a year ago. Jessica Cashmore of Boulder-based ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Invertase Brewing Co. targeting October 10 for its grand opening
Phillipsburg will officially have a brewery this fall, lehighvalleylive.com reported on August 18.

Invertase Brewing Co. is targeting Oct. 10 for its grand opening. The brewery at 51 N. Broad St. has been under development for months as it transforms from a former daycare into a literal beer laboratory.

Owners Stephen and Karen Zolnay, of Stockton in Hunterdon County, are scientists as well as homebrewers – he worked as a biochemist for 25 years, she as a diagnostic virologist at a children’s hospital in Boston. Karen Zolnay is the brewery’s yeast expert and will have a lab to experiment with the ingredient inside the brewery.

The brewery is named after invertase, an enzyme that starts the fermentation process. The logo is a stylized version of invertase’s molecular structure.

Stephen Zolnay said Invertase this week passed its health inspection and got its certificate of occupancy. They anticipate getting a manufacturer’s permit from the state within days so they can begin brewing, and a permit to sell within the next month.

The October grand opening is being planned in conjunction with the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, which picked a date well enough in advance so Invertase can tackle any problems as they start up. Stephen ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Husband-and-wife team changes location plan for Ashton Brewing
Some news that might make beer lovers in Roxbury hopping mad: The plan to open a craft beer brewery in a former Kenvil roller rink is dead in the water, TAPinto.net reported on August 19.

Long Valley residents Donna and Steven Ashton are no longer pursuing their dream of converting the former Kenvil Roller Rink into the home of Ashton Brewing. Instead, they are setting up shop in a former brewery in Middlesex Borough.

An informal proposal for the Kenvil site was presented to the Roxbury Planning Board in December. A formal application was filed in April.

“We are no longer pursuing that location for the brewery,” said Donna Ashton. “Unfortunately, we could not make it work with the landlord.”

The Ashtons were going to lease the 10,000-square-foot structure from the Gruber family, which owns several buildings in Roxbury including the Fran’s Wicker store in Ledgewood. The roller rink building,at 950 Route 46, has not been used for about 30 years.

Steven Ashton, who has been brewing beer for about that long and is a “master beer judge,” said he planned to name his beers after various areas of Roxbury.

Converting the empty roller rink into a micro-brewery would have been a major, and costly, ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan & Australia: Asahi acquires Queensland craft brewer Green Beacon Brewing
Japanese brewing giant Asahi is active at both the small and big end of Australia's A$14 billion beer market, swooping on Queensland craft brewer Green Beacon Brewing, The Australian Financial Review reported on August 21.

The acquisition of the Brisbane group comes just a month after Asahi made a A$16 billion buyout offer for Australia's biggest beer company, Carlton & United Breweries.

CUB owns Victoria Bitter and Carlton Draught, and had also been stepping up its own presence in craft beers well before the Asahi buyout offer, acquiring Sydney's 4Pines and the Adelaide-based Pirate Life.

It is understood that CUB had itself made overtures to Green Beacon months earlier prior to itself being bought out by Asahi, and had been trying to convince the owners to sell. They will now be under the same umbrella.

Asahi executive chairman Peter Margin said Green Beacon was ''a great brand and a great business''. A sale price wasn't disclosed.

Green Beacon was established in early 2013 in the Brisbane suburb of Teneriffe. It was founded by friends Marc Chrismas and Adrian Slaughter, who were later joined by brewer Johann van der Walt.

Green Beacon invested A$3 million in a brewery in the northern industrial suburb of Geebung in Brisbane ...More info on site

Whisky news India: Diageo increases stake in India’s United Spirits
Spirits giant Diageo has announced that it has increased its shareholding in India's United Spirits Limited (USL) to 55.2%, ESM reported on August 21.

The company has acquired more than 3.3 million shares, to raise its controlling shareholding position by approximately 0.46%.

Diageo made the purchase on the Bombay Stock Exchange for INR 591.95 (€7.47) per share.

The move places the company in a favourable position to capitalise on opportunities within India, which is considered to be one of the world's most exciting growth markets for alcoholic beverages.

For the financial year 2019, USL posted organic net sales growth of 8%, driven by a 12% increase in the 'Prestige and Above' segment, and double-digit growth in the Scotch category.

Brewery news The Philippines: San Miguel Corp. to issue P10 bln worth of fixed rate bonds this year
Diversified conglomerate San Miguel Corp. plans to issue P10 billion worth of fixed rate bonds before the end of the year, the Manila Standard reported on August 16.

San Miguel said in a disclosure to the stock exchange the P10 billion fixed-rate bonds represented the final tranche of the P60-billion bond shelf registration earlier approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

San Miguel said it would file with the SEC an offer supplement on or before Aug. 22 regarding the planned bond offering.

The conglomerate will also conduct an investors’ briefing for qualified institutional buyers on Aug. 22 to discuss the terms of the bonds.

The company did not say how it would use the proceeds from the bond offering. It used the proceeds of previous bond offerings to finance debt obligations.

San Miguel last issued retail bonds in 2017. It offered P5 billion five-year bonds at a fixed interest rate of 5.1923 percent a year.

San Miguel early this week obtained the go-signal to pursue the P734-billion Bulacan International Airport project.
