Whisky news USA: Pernod Ricard to acquire alcohol manufacturer Castle Brands
Pernod Ricard has entered into an agreement to acquire alcohol manufacturer and marketer Castle Brands for approximately $223 million, FoodBev.com reported on August 29.

As part of the deal, Pernod will add brands such as Jefferson’s Bourbon, Brady’s Irish Cream and Clontarf Irish Whiskey to its portfolio.

In its full-year results published in June, Castle Brands saw its net sales reach $95.8 million as it was boosted by the “continued growth” of Jefferson’s.

Alexandre Ricard, Pernod Ricard CEO, said: “Through this acquisition, we welcome this great brand portfolio, in particular, Jefferson’s Bourbon whiskey, to the Pernod Ricard family. Bourbon is a key category in the US, which is our single most important market.

“This deal aligns well with our consumer-centric strategy to offer our consumers the broadest line-up of high-quality, premium brands. As with our American whiskies Smooth Ambler, Rabbit Hole and TX, we would provide Jefferson’s a strong route to market and secure its long-term development, while remaining true to its authentic and innovative character.”

Castle Brands CEO Richard J. Lampen added: “We are very pleased to reach an agreement with Pernod Ricard, which is the result of months of planning and deliberation by our board of directors.

“We are confident that this transaction, upon ...More info on site

Brewery news Spain & USA: Mahou San Miguel acquires majority stake in Michigan’s Founders Brewing Co.
Spanish brewer Mahou San Miguel has reached a deal to acquire a majority stake in Michigan’s Founders Brewing Co., according to a report by MiBiz.com.

Mahou already owned 30% of the fast-growing Grand Rapids-based craft brewery following a 2014 transaction valued at more than $96 million. The company will now hold 90% of Founders following the latest deal, which is expected to close in January, MiBiz reported, citing a filing with the Michigan Liquor Control Commission last week. Founders Brewing co-founders Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers will each retain 5% of the business.

The latest deal will buy out more than two dozen minority shareholders.

“To see the kind of return on the dollar that they’re able to enjoy, it really is very satisfying and rewarding, coming from a place of just a couple homebrewers — and quite frankly, I was the opposite of wealth,” Stevens told MiBiz. “It is the American Dream.”

Stevens did not return a call seeking comment.

MiBiz, citing a Freedom of Information Act request, reported that as part of the 2014 transaction, Mahou had an option to purchase the remainder of Founders on the 5-year anniversary of the deal for a price between 10- and 13-times EBITDA. However, Founders’ chief ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: The Drifa Brewing Company waiting for final approval to open in Marquette
Michigan's first co-op brewery in Marquette is very near completion, UpperMichigansSource.com reported on August 26.

The Drifa Brewing Company is waiting for final approval from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission. The final licensing application will go in front of the commission on August 28.

After final licensing and approval, owners can begin the brewing process and open the doors to customers.

Drifa is different because instead of one owner, about 350 people actually own it together.

"The fact that you can come here and drink the beer and taste it in a brewery that is actually owned by you and your friends as well is part of the specialness of the process,” said President of Drifa Brewing Company and the Marquette Brewing Cooperative, David Gill.

Gill added that he hopes to be open for business within the next three or so weeks.

Brewery news USA, SC: Lore Brewing Company to become Indian Land’s first brewery
Indian Land’s first brewery, Lore Brewing Company, is set to open by the end of September at 1218 Rosemont Drive — the entrance of the Rosemont neighbourhood, the Charlotte Agenda reported on August 26.

The concept comes from husband and wife team Dave and Danielle Tonkery, beer enthusiasts who moved to Charlotte in 2007 — and Indian Land in 2012. Dave has been brewing beer at home for more than ten years and with support from friends in the industry and some self-teaching, he’s ready to share his creations with others on a larger scale.

The Tonkerys wanted a place where people could come tell their own stories because “everyone has their own,” so they named the brewery Lore, short for folklore (stories and customs passed down through word of mouth).

The tagline for the brewery is “Share Your Lore.”

The space includes a spacious bar, high tops, regular seating and patio seats. At least five TVs will be installed for your sports-viewing pleasure, and the taproom will be open Tuesday to Sunday.

The official beer lineup hasn’t been released, but they’ll be named folklore-style. Expect 12 beers eventually but only six or so on opening day. They plan to have an IPA, blonde ale, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Fullsteam Brewing’s second location set to open in spring 2020
Fullsteam Brewing will open a second location in Boxyard RTP next year, officials announced at a groundbreaking ceremony on August 27, WRAL.com reported.

Hundreds showed up on August 27 to celebrate the start of construction on a space that, when completed, will bring dining, entertaining and shopping to the Research Triangle Park.

Among those is Durham-based Fullsteam Brewing.

Fullsteam founder Sean Lilly Wilson spoke at the ceremony.

"I know this space pretty well," he said. "When I lived in suburban Philadelphia, my mom actually worked for IBM and she trained in RTP. There’s a lot happening here, and we’re super excited to be a part of it."

The concept for Boxyard RTP, which utilizes repurposed shipping containers, was inspired by a similar facility built in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Boxyard RTP is set to open in spring 2020. The project will cover 12 acres in the larger area of land designated as Park Center that is adjacent to I-40.

“I can think of no better place than here in RTP, this fusion of industry and agriculture and innovation, to showcase our second location," Wilson said. "We fell in love with Boxyard’s creative design, and we truly appreciate their commitment to local. This could have been any big box concept. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Mill Creek Brewing Co. to launch 3rd location in Franklin
For almost four years, 216 Noah Drive in Franklin, TN has been the place where Mantra Artisan Ales created and served culinary inspired beers and made a name for itself. What began as a side project for the former head brewer of Cool Springs Brewery, Derrick Morse, has now grown to an all-encompassing beverage company with three distinct brands who has out grown the original location, Brewbound reported on August 27.

As of September 1st, the brewery will be leaving the space to focus entirely on the new 83-acre beer park and new state of the art brewing facility in Murfreesboro known as Hop Springs. As a part of the move, Mill Creek Brewing Co. will take over the space, expanding their taproom presence to the Franklin area and utilize the additional brewing capacity as a test kitchen for experimental and specialty beers. The move marks Mill Creek Brewing’s 3rd taproom opening and 2nd production facility, and will make them the only distributing production brewery operating in Williamson County.

Since beginning in early 2015, the Life is Brewing team grew their small craft brewery to include three different beer brands (Mantra Artisan Ales, Steel Barrel Brewing, and Humulus Project) and two venues ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Ravinia Brewing Company coming to Logan Square, Chicago
Another brewery and taproom is coming to Logan Square, Chicago, the Block Club Chicago reported on August 26.

Ravinia Brewing Company, a brewery that has been operating out of a Near West Side production brewery for more than a year, is taking over the old Ale Syndicate spot at 2601 W. Diversey Ave., it was announced in a press release on August 26.

The Tribune was first to report the news.

Ravinia’s new Logan Square production facility and taproom will also feature a taco bar similar to the one the founders opened in their suburban Highland Park brewpub.

Ravinia aims to start production by September and open the taproom in early 2020, according to the press release.

Beer-wise, folks can expect Ravinia favorites such as Steep Ravine IPA, Food Truck Pilsner and Flight of the Rooster Saison.

Ravinia has bounced around since its founding in 2017. The founders tried to move into the old Finch Beer Co. spot on Montrose Avenue and then tried to open in suburban Ravinia, where three of the founders live, but both plans never came to fruition, according to the Tribune.

The founders ended up opening a brewpub in suburban Highland Park while they looked for a production facility.

To commemorate the move ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Newport’s newest brewery open for business
After months of constructing and careful planning, Newport’s newest brewery is open for business in the Canyon Way building that some long-time local residents will remember as Pop’s, the Newport News Times reported on August 27.

“It’s been a long road,” said Brodie Becksted, owner and manager of the brewery. “It’s been over two years, so we’re pretty excited to get it open.”

The brewery, which opens with the accompanying restaurant, The Anchor at Newport Brewing Company, will have a variety of original craft beers on tap, including a lager, a pilsner, a pale ale called the Yaquina Sunrise, a Dungeness IPA and a hazy double IPA, along with a “Rockfish” stout and the “Salty Big” rosé.

“I’m a lager guy, so that’s what I’m drinking right now,” Becksted said Friday afternoon, the day before opening to the public. “We have some non-alcoholic beverages. We have a full bar with all the alcohol, wine, and we have hard seltzers, too.”

Each of the seven original brews served up at the brewery’s opening night aren’t the only original beers to be brewed on site. Within another week, Newport Brewing Company staff will have another couple of brews ready — an English oatmeal stout and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: State 48 Brewery to open fifth location in north Phoenix
The owners of State 48 Brewery have plans to open a fifth location - a brewpub - and an Italian restaurant in north Phoenix, ABC15 Arizona reported on August 26.

Owner Mario Rana told ABC15 that both concepts, State 48 Rock House Brewery and Mia Osteria, would open at The Shops at Norterra near Interstate 17 and Happy Valley Road.

Both concepts will open in the complex across from the Harkins movie theater near Elevate Coffee and Pita Jungle, said Mara Leahy, general manager at RED Development, the developer of The Shops at Norterra.

Mia Osteria is expected to open in December and State 48 Rock House is expected to open in January 2020, said Rana.

Unlike its other locations which brew different styles of beer -- a mix of IPAs, ales, porters, lagers, and stouts -- State 48 Rock House will not make beer on site, but will feature many of State 48 Brewery's 30 beers, said Rana.

The 6,000-square-foot brewpub will have seating for up to 250 people, a stage behind the bar where local bands will be able to perform, and a mezzanine. It will also have a 4,000-square-foot fully-covered patio, lounge seating, an outdoor bar, and games, such as ping-pong, Cornhole, ...More info on site

Brewery news Russia: Carlsberg’s alcohol-free drinks getting warm welcome in Russia
Carlsberg A/S is getting a warm welcome in Russia for its alcohol-free brewed drinks as high taxes weigh on customers’ thirst for beer, Bloomberg reported on August 28.

Sales of nonalcoholic beverages have been gaining by double-digit percentages, reaching more than 10% of the Danish brewer’s revenue in the land of vodka over the past two years, Lars Lehmann, executive vice president for Eastern Europe, said in an interview. Russia, Carlsberg’s second-biggest market, has been raising beer taxes gradually since 2009, which has cut sharply into sales.

Carlsberg recently began Russian production of Barley Bros, a brewed soft drink sold in flavors including lemon with mint and apple with green tea. The company’s Baltika 0 Grapefruit alcohol-free beer, a new variety of its Baltika 0 line, is also picking up sales there, according to Lehmann.

The offering is “for refreshment,” Lehmann said, “not just a beer for those who can’t drink alcohol.”

The products are riding a health-consciousness movement. While still a hard-drinking culture, Russia had one of the world’s sharpest decreases in alcohol consumption over the 12 years that ended in 2016, according to the World Health Organization.

Carlsberg has also been helped by sales of Flash Up, which it said was the leading ...More info on site

The Managing Director, Guinness Nigeria, Mr Baker Magunda, while commenting on the result, stated that the company would continue to work on all operating indices while expecting that the micro and macroeconomic parameters improve.

Magunda said, “Revenue for the year declined by eight per cent, compared to same period last year on the backdrop of an extremely challenging macroeconomic and competitive environment.
