South Korea & Japan: South Korea reduces imports of Japanese beer by 97% in August
|
South Korean imports of beer from Japan plunged 97% in August from a year earlier, amid a popular backlash against Japanese products that has spread as relations between the two countries sour, Bloomberg reported on September 3 citing a report by a local newspaper.
South Korea imported just $223,000 worth of Japanese beer in the month, down from $7.57 million a year earlier, the Maeil Business Newspaper said, citing preliminary data from Korea Customs Service. Japan has held the largest share of South Korean beer imports every year since 2010, with sales surging more than sixfold by 2018 to $78.3 million.
Japan’s largest publicly traded brewers such as Asahi Group Holdings Ltd., Kirin Holdings Co. and Sapporo Holdings Ltd. all export beer to South Korea, and had in previous years cited growth in that market as promising.
The boycott of Japanese goods has spread since Tokyo first imposed export restrictions on key chip materials in July, and worsened as the spat grew to include South Korea’s preferential trade status and an intelligence-sharing agreement.

Angola: Brewer Empresa Angolana de Cervejas running one production line only to reduce costs
|
The deactivation of the first filling line of Angolan beermaker EKA – Empresa Angolana de Cervejas due to the obsolete state of the equipment, which occurred last June, led to production dropping by 50.9% to 27,000 litres per hour, the company’s managing director Marc Mayer was quoted as saying by Macauhub on September 4.
Mayer said that the board of directors had chosen to keep only the second production line operational, which has a maximum capacity of 35,000 litres per hour, as it has lower costs and always has raw materials available from the market. .
Mayer also told the Angop news agency that the replacement of the first line requires an estimated investment of 200 million kwanzas (US$545,000), “which is slow to be executed because the company is experiencing a financial situation that requires consideration in order to avoid possible disruptions to the business portfolio.”
EKA, which is part of French-owned group Castel Angola, is located in Cambambe municipality, Kwanza Norte province, where it produces beer from water, malt, unmalted cereals such as corn and rice, and hops.

Australia: Asahi’s Green Beacon booted out of craft brewers association
|
Queensland craft brewer Green Beacon has been booted out of the national organisation overseeing the interests of hundreds of small craft brewers as that same group raises concerns with the competition regulator about Asahi's looming A$16 billion buyout of Carlton & United Breweries, The Australian Financial Review reported on September 2.
Green Beacon was acquired by Asahi on August 21, just four weeks after the Japanese group unveiled a much larger A$16 billion buyout proposal for Australia's biggest beer company, CUB, owner of mainstream beer brands Victoria Bitter, Carlton Draught and Great Northern.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is conducting inquiries into the CUB buyout ahead of a decision earmarked for late October on whether it might insist on divestments before approving the transaction.
The Independent Brewers Association, which has hundreds of craft brewers as members, has raised a number of concerns with the ACCC about the CUB buyout as part of the regulator's process, with submissions closing on September 6.
Separately, it has already forced Green Beacon to depart from the IBA membership ranks following Asahi's acquisition of the Queensland group, because it is now part of a global conglomerate.

USA: Craft Brew Alliance seeks answers on future relationship with AB InBev
|
The awkwardness between Craft Brew Alliance and Anheuser-Busch InBev didn’t end on August 23 when the world’s largest beer manufacturer passed on making a qualifying offer to purchase the company, Brewbound reported.
AB InBev, which owns more than 31% of the Portland, Oregon-based craft beer company, had until August 23 to either make an offer of at least $24.50 per share to buy the remainder of the company or pay a one-time $20 million, opted for the latter.
CBA CEO Andy Thomas told Brewbound that the awkwardness has shifted from a will-they, won’t-they-get-married scenario, to one in which the question is if the two companies still want to live together now that they’re no longer engaged.
“There’s a different kind of tenor to the relationship now,” he said. “That’s not good or bad. That’s just what it is.”
Thomas described CBA and AB InBev’s “it’s complicated” relationship in terms of a break up. Sometimes couples who break up become better friends; other times, there’s no basis for a friendship.
“The question is what role do they play, and what role do they want to play,” he said. “Those are the conversations that we’re having in the future of CBA’s development.”

The Czech Republic & UK: Small Czech brewers counting on higher exports to the UK after Brexit
|
The tiny craft brewery in a quaint Czech village near the border with Germany and Poland is perhaps an unlikely place to be plotting a Brexit strategy, Bloomberg reported on September 3.
Co-owner Viktor Tkadlec is betting his “clean taste without foreign additives” will help him elbow into the crowded U.K. market even after it leaves the European Union. Cvikov Pivovar is part of a group of Czech brewers aiming to break into Britain even as the country risks crashing out of the EU at the end of next month without any agreement to keep trade flowing.
“The U.K. market is very competitive and every pub has 10 to 15 types of beer,” said Tkadlec, who exported “tens” of barrels to British pubs in a test run this year. “We’re not an export brewer and we’ve never had that goal. But let’s see how it goes.”
While much of the Brexit focus has been on multinationals navigating potential customs barriers, the effort by Czech craft beer producers shows how Britain’s tortuous departure from the EU is resonating across the continent.

India: Big beverage makers rush to capture India’s non-alcoholic malt drinks segment
|
Seeing big opportunity in the country’s non-alcoholic malt-drink market - a niche but potentially a high-volume category - global biggies such as Coca-Cola and Heineken have entered the beverage segment, the Outlook India reported on September 1.
A non-alcoholic malt drink is a high energy beverage, brewed in the same fashion as beer or ale. The beverage generally contains under 100 calories, compared to 300 of an average carbonated soft drink.
Besides Heineken, Anheuser-Busch InBev has also entered this segment to target the vast untapped market of people, who refrain from consuming alcohol. Coca-Cola has forayed into the niche category in a big way with its global brand Barbican.
In case of Coca-Cola, the entry aims at introduction of more healthy options in the F&B segment.
The company launched a pilot project six months back to introduce the product which is targeted at the youth. "We introduced Barbican, a non-alcoholic malt-based beverages, in select Indian markets," a senior company official said.
Similarly, it was consumer demand for no-alcohol brews that led United Breweries to launch Heineken 0.0 which caters to the segment of health-conscious, young adults.

India: AB InBev’s plea to put New Delhi beer sales ban on hold rejected by court
|
An Indian court on September 3 rejected a request from Anheuser-Busch InBev to stay a three-year sales ban imposed by New Delhi city authorities, dealing another setback for the world’s largest brewer in one of the country’s key markets, Reuters reported.
Authorities in New Delhi barred AB InBev in July from selling its beer in the New Delhi market on allegations of evading local state taxes. The company has denied the allegations.
The state’s excise commissioner, who is already hearing an appeal against the ban order, had rejected a request from the company to hold off implementing the ban, Reuters reported last month.
The company’s plea against the city government was heard at the Delhi High Court on September 3, where Justice Navin Chawla declined to give any immediate relief and said the appeals process before the state authorities must first be completed.
“Why have two parallel proceedings,” said Chawla.
The city government’s ban order followed a three-year investigation which found that beer maker SABMiller - acquired by AB InBev in 2016 for around $100 billion - used duplicate barcodes on its beer bottles supplied to city retailers that year, allowing it to pay lower levies.

Kenya: Embu County’s largest brewer switches to maize meal and animal feed production
|
The largest beer manufacturer in Kenya’s Embu County has stopped operations permanently in what the management attributes to declining sales, arising from interference by State agencies, The Standard reported on September 3.
Mountain Slopes Commercial Services, which produced Kingmaster Opaque Special Beer for over a decade, announced to employees and the public that it would cease operations starting this month and shift focus to maize meal and animal feed production.
“For many years we fought, but we lost the market. Even when we bounced back, we did not find a vibrant business like before. We have decided to close it down,” said the company’s Managing Director Samuel Muriuki.
“The region is a major producer of maize. We decided to focus on adding value to what is available. This will shield our employees from losing jobs. We don’t expect similar frustrations from the Government.”
He said the plant is now up for leasing to investors in the manufacturing sector.
Until 2015, the firm was doing well for years but suffered a blow after it was closed down intermittently due to failure to obtain one permit from the Government.

USA: Yakima Valley hop growers expect solid harvest this year
|
Cold and snowy weather in March created complications for the hops planted in the Yakima Valley and the Pacific Northwest.
But mild summer weather helped the more mature hops farther along in a multiyear production cycle, the Yakima Herald-Republic reported on September 4.
Overall, regional hop growers are expecting a solid harvest.
“I think most everyone feels this year’s crop will be at least equivalent to last year,” said Ann George, executive director of the Hop Growers of America, a Yakima-based organization that provides promotion and education to American hop growers.
For most growers, the Yakima Valley harvest started early last week and is expected to continue through the rest of this month.
Washington, Oregon and Idaho grow nearly all U.S. hops, with Washington alone growing 75 percent of the nation’s crop. Most Washington hops are grown in the Yakima Valley.
Last year, hop growers in the three states harvested 106.9 million pounds, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture figures analyzed by the Hop Growers of America. Just over 77.7 million pounds came from Washington.
Based on a grower survey, the USDA estimate for this year’s crop is at 106 million pounds. Final figures won’t be ready until December, several months after the harvest ends, George said.
